Delicious and hearty. I want to say that I first went to Blue Dahlia when it was a little shop in East Austin. Could that be right? All I remember was a menu that was a throw back to early Austin for me. The early 80's and when Whole Foods was reminding us that Tofu wasn't just for hippies and you could grab your grains out of a bin on Lamar Blvd. I had noshed there a few times and then life moved on. I was invited to eat here with a colleague and was curious as to what had happened in the years since I last had a meal at the Dahlia. East Austin to Westlake Hills is quite a change, but as soon as I entered, I felt the warmth of the days gone by.
A nice snug, bustling bistro for sure. I met my friends and ordered up the Black Bean salad with a scoop of Egg Salad. Curious wierd right? I had a hankering for some different stuff. Other's order the Coq au Vin Blanc and the Tuna Salad. My salad arrived and it was on a huge plate, full of veggie goodness and bright yellow scoop of Egg Salad. The Egg Salad and Beans went quite well. I also liked that the dressing was served on the side, since I didn't really need it and the avocado, tomato and corn blended well together. I didn't scarf the entire salad, I was doing a lot of talking so I boxed up the remains and brought them home to a very gratefull wifey poo.
Service was very good, attentive and let us visit and talk and not get in the way. The only curious item was when asked if I wanted to take the rest of my salad to go, I was provided a to go box, rather then having put into a box for me. A tad clumsy, but by no means a big issue at all. I did manage to get everything into the box without leaving half of it on the table. I cannot judge price point anymore, but if you feel $18.50 for a hearty, with an add on Egg Salad expensive, then there's that.
There were all the beautiful people serving and working there and the clientele is very much Westlake along with an impossibly difficult parking lot at 1pm on a Wednesday. I was able to find a spot, but with SUV world out there and ok, I also drive Infiniti QX70, made the spots skinnier then one would think. Is it worth the hassle? Yes, I would give it a total thumbs up!
