The Best San Diego-Area Wineries to Visit - Eater San Diego

"Blue Door converted Julian’s old livery stables into a charming and dog-friendly tasting room just a few steps off Main Street. Predominantly focusing on red varietals, the tasting room is open from noon until 5 p.m. seven days a week. Looking to stay closer to the city? There’s a second location on Morena Boulevard complete with a full production facility." - Darlene Horn

Yelp
The previous reviews didn't steer me wrong! The sangria was delicious! It was super quiet and chill tucked back here behind Main Street. It was a pleasant afternoon with my cold drink and sunshine. The woman working was smiley and chatty.

Yelp
A quick stop for a wine refill before dinner. Great deals and a warm, cozy atmosphere! They have 3 Linda of wine for wine tasting, 5 pours for $20. We also tried the sangria and blueberry cider. Parking is street parking and availability is depends on the day of the week. A privately owned. Owner and his wife were the one running the place and helping customers.

Yelp
Cute cozy spot with fantastic customer service! I always get their sangria when I visit.

Yelp
* winery spot *friendly service * friendly ambiance Small cozy spot with tables and heater outside. They have a great sangria! We love coming here for the sangria but also have other options. Also must try the hot spiced mulled it's amazing. The customer service is so friendly. We loved Cameron she was super helpful and outgoing.

Yelp
Can't recommend Blue Door Winery enough. The owner was super sweet and welcoming. Her dog, Oliver was a total sweetheart as well as he sat right on top of our laps. The sangria & cider was easily the best I've had. The sangria is so juicy and the cider is so fresh and crisp. Both are a treat. The prices are really fair and the service is an A+. You will feel like at home and have something amazing to drink. Can't recommend the sangria, cider, or a wine tasting enough.

Yelp
I love coming here for sangria whenever I visit Julian. This winery tasting room is very cozy. My girlfriends and I sat at a table by the fireplace. The owners are very friendly and they have an adorable dog there.

Yelp
Really cute spot in Julian! Wine tasting room with a little fireplace in the corner, which is perfect for chilly days/nights!

Yelp
Little boutique winery nestled in the heart of Julian. The service was excellent, the gal working provided great recommendations on the wine they serve there. Super chill vibe, we went on a random Thursday so it was not too busy. They have a little patio where you can sit and enjoy your wine, you can also bring your own food and snack to enjoy. Since this is considered a boutique winery, their prices are a bit on the high end ($18-$20) for 1 glass of wine. We opted for the house made sangria It was so good, super refreshing on a hot summer day.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a wonderful location that Marc and Karen have to relax and enjoy a glass of wine

Yelp
I have only excellent things to say about this place. Delicious wine and their sangria was top notch! Kameron facilitated my tasting and she was so helpful and kind! This wonderful establishment deserves all the praise! I will be returning to Blue Door Winery, hungry for more!

Yelp
I have to said yes!! A 5-5 Star's here at Blue Door Winery This winery is only is a red wine winery only here I called fir during the week and spoke to Kamie And she was so friendly over the phone so helpful too. We took my Uncle he really enjoyed the Sangria we bought a bottle for him But because it was capped to quickly the gases caused it the explode Kamie said please go to the other store by us for a free one on the house Super happy about the replacement We've been back since

Yelp
Super cute and fun hangout. Bring your own food and pair it with the off the hook sangria. Cameron is super cool and runs the place with Oliver (the dog). They have a hot sangria cider as well as a cold cider. It is delicious. You can sit and just hang out here. It is great. We will be back!

Yelp
We came in right at closing and the lady was so sweet, offering to pour us all a glass of sangria before she closed up! Sangria was amazing and the place is so so cute, 10/10 recommend!

Ariana C.

Yelp
great sangria, the owner was so nice and let us buy a quick drink right when she was closing. She also has the cutest dog named ollie to greet you at the door. and the decorations are perfect.

Yelp
This place was really good! The girl from Hawaii that work there was very knowledgeable and gave good information on the wine! It was such a popular place that they only had two left and then the sangria. This sangria was vicious far better than I was expecting! The cuvee are very fruity. I really liked the sangria! I would venture to say it was probably the better ones I've had anywhere.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
If you like Sangria this is a great please to stop and end your day of wine tasting and exploring the town of Julian.
google avatar

Autumn C.

Yelp
This is a perfect escape from the craziness of Main St. The couple running the place are fun and friendly, and they made our visit even better. The patio has a few tables in the shade, and a few umbrella covered picnic tables in the courtyard. We tried a delicious cup of sangria. It was so good we got a growler to go. Highly recommend stopping in when you're in town.

Yelp
This is a cool little wine tasting shop just off the main drag of Julian. We were walking along on a hot day and spotted a sign for sangria which lured us in. We sat outside at a table under shade and while my wife had the sangria I had a glass of one of their reds; a sangiovese. Mine had strong fruit and vegetable notes which I really loved. The owners were exceptionally friendly and we enjoyed their handsome, friendly dog Ollie who is a real sweetheart. If you like wine make sure you make this a stop when you visit Julian.
google avatar

Jane G.

Yelp
Such a cute and welcoming winery! I had a pleasant wine tasting experience here. It was super casual, affordable, and fun. The selection is small but the drinks were great. Their cold sangria is my favorite - very crisp and sweet!!
google avatar

Marisa M.

Yelp
Cute little outpost for the winery which has its main location in central SD in the BayHo neighborhood. The owners were on staff the day we went in, and were super helpful and accommodating to our large group. They turned on the outdoor heater and we enjoyed a round of sangria on the patio. A great stop for a drink between shopping or eating pie.

Bianca L.

Yelp
Amazing wine, yummy sangrias, and great service. The coziest winery! Cameron and her husband are very informative and knowledgeable of their wine and Oliver (the dog) gives good company.

Christy C.

Yelp
Great people. Great wine. Their dog Oliver is amazing! Always a highlight for me when I visit Julian.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Sorry BDW, but when the wine host is sweating and complaining about the fact that the uninsulated tin roof makes it like an oven it's hard to focus on hint of plumbs. That said I will say the Sangria was pretty, pretty good. So swing in and grab a red cup full. There's also a dog that works there. Little advice Blue Door Winery, but ambiance and design shouldn't come at the cost of turning the customers into Hot Pockets. By the way what does family owned have to do with anything. I'll tell you, it means that staff is comfortable enough to point out that the tin roof turns the place into an oven in the summer and Freezer in the winter. Garage winery? Sure in the 60's you know when they didn't have central heat and air. I'm surprised they still don't use the technology? Oh they do it's called imitation and it's insulated aluminum.
google avatar

Koko L.

Yelp
Omg the sangrias here are amazing!!! Obsessed with it that I have to bring a growler home. The lady at the bar was very friendly. I wish they would serve the sangria in a wine glass and not a red cup, I don't know if this is the way they're doing it because of covid but would prefer to drink my wine/sangria in a glass
google avatar

Ania K.

Yelp
Wine in the mountains anyone? This adorable barn style winery was located directly across the street from our hotel so we couldn't resist. Strict COVID restrictions didn't allow wine tasting and they only had sangria available so we didn't have a choice as to what to get. The sangria was good. What makes it taste better is that you get to enjoy it at a higher elevation and everything is better that way. The lady behind the counter wasn't friendly and seemed to be having a bad day. Maybe it had something to do with businesses being forced to shut down again in CA? Not sure but didn't let her mood stop us from enjoying ourselves. We grabbed our drinks and took them to our own patio across the street. This winery does offer some outdoor seating on a cute patio and it's dog friendly.

Lindsey L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a glass of wine and stayed a while! Loved the vibe and the wine was delicious! The owner was so kind and welcoming. We brought our 3 year old and played cards and loved on the resident puppy, Oliver. Highly recommend! Try the Sangria and do the flight tasting so you get to try it all.

Yelp
Just recently visited Julian, we stopped in for a wine tasting & bought 1 bottle of each of their wines after. About a week later we opened a bottle to enjoy with dinner and the cork was loose. The wine was bad from not being properly sealed. It's a dark brown color and you can tell the cork was put in like a week ago. So we opened a 2nd bottle of theirs to see if it was the same and it was even worse. Not at all what they are pouring for you at the tasting. Don't waste your money- bait & switch
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
I like this place. Great vibe. Right across the street from the Gold Rush B&B where I was stayin. Place is run by a married couple, Marc and Kameron. Beautiful pair of people. I did the wine tasting and Marc ran through each description perfectly. He encouraged me to take my time and enjoy each one. When I was done, I had a cup of their ever so popular sangria. They provide an incredible environment. If you don't mind the fact they don't do white wines (only reds), this is a great nugget on Main Street in Julian. Marc and Kameron make it really easy to make someone wanna come back, even if it is a 110mi drive. They know how to make everyone feel welcome when they come in and feel just at home here. Thank you both. You both made my experience there great!

Lisa A.

Yelp
The best Sangria hands down!! Can purchase refillable glass growler as well. A must stop when in town. Not too sweet. Just perfect. Simple cool atmosphere. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Marilyn S.

Yelp
Dog friendly and they offer a great iced Sangria that was perfect for the hot day when we visited.
google avatar

Tracie M.

Yelp
My girlfriends usually get the flight tasting or the sangria (which I am told is fantastic). I get a nonalcoholic drink which are few and far between (Hansen's sodas and water). There are some tables inside and a few more outside. If the weather is nice, sitting outside is very pleasant. A few doggies wandering around, kicking back with your wine or sangria, made for a perfect day.

Yelp
Lovely urban winery in Julian and oh SO dog friendly! The wonderful lady who worked here last Thursday morning was so wonderful, she took exceptional care of us and i purchased a bottle of the cab franc to take home. The sangria does not contain brandy but it is still very tasty, i enjoyed the tasting (all reds), grapes are sourced from different regions and i very much enjoyed discussing wine with the nice woman whose name escapes me at the moment but i cannot wait to return and pay them another visit. One of my dogs recently passed and walking in here was almost therapeutic, the owners love dogs, there are pics of dogs on the walls, it was heart warming, i had no idea i would end up here that day but somehow i did and my heart was happy.

Yelp
Owner offered to make it right. Worth another shot. Cute, nice quaint place in Julian. Owners are really nice.

Yelp
Came here with my boyfriend for some wine and ended up staying a few hours with their amazing SANGRIA! The place is super cute with a great rustic mountain vibe. We really enjoyed the outdoor seating in the little plaza area. The lady working the counter was the only one but she was killing it and being an amazing host to everyone. We had 3 rounds of the Sangria and were very happy! The price for the Sangria was very reasonable which is why we kept ordering more. Overall, great experience with the Julian mountain vibe, great service and relaxing outdoor plaza - we will be back!

Monica D.

Yelp
Best red wine in the area. If you haven't tried it, make a mad dash over there for their sangria, it's like no other! The owners are an amazing couple. Makes it that much better!

Yelp
Best sangria on a hot summer day. Very dog friendly. Cute tables to enjoy and afternoon outside.

Yelp
So we had brought my pup to Julian for the day to see the snow and happened to walk by and were stopped by some people in front of the winery who wanted to pet and take pics of Rocco. Just as we were about to leave, the owner of Blue Door knocks on the window and tells us we cannot leave and we must come inside for a drink...and because she wants to meet lil' Rocco. I didn't know if dogs were allowed inside, but she assured me they were and she even had her dog inside as well too. The owner (and I apologize for forgetting her name!) was so sweet and asked a bunch of questions about Rocco and gushed over him before offering us some DELICIOUS homemade Sangria! YUM! We stayed here for about 30/45 minutes while other customers came in, the dogs played and we enjoyed our wonderful Sangria. The owner told us about their other dog-friendly location in San Diego and invited to come by, and of course bring Rocco. We agreed to pay them a visit in the near future :) This is a great little winery to stop by if you're in Julian, so warm and accommodating...and of course, get the Sangria! :) P.S. a glass of Sangria is $8

Yelp
Surprisingly good wines! We had no expectations for this place but really loved all of their reds! Bottle prices are a little steep, starting at $37 a bottle, but the tasting flight was your usual price and we enjoyed it. If the bottles were in the $20-30 range we probably would have purchased 2-3 of our favorites. They are very dog friendly!! But it's a small space so please remember if you're brining your pup out in public spaces that they're well trained, friendly, and well groomed ;-)

Yelp
We just happened to stumble upon this place on our way up to camping and LOVED IT! The service was amazing and the wine was incredible. We did a tasting and everything was great. Our favorite ended up being the sangria, it was perfect on a warm day. We had our dog with us and enjoyed sitting out on the patio, relaxing, and enjoying the calm, friendly environment. They even spoiled our dog with a fews treats and nice cold water (after asking which is always appreciated). We regret not buying a bottle. Can't recommend this place enough! We hope to return soon.

Yelp
We arrived at 430 on a Saturday. It was fairly busy and lively. Told the owner (?) that we were visiting and had never been here. She was I'm a rush trying to close amd basically only sold her Sangria....of which her husband was bringing out a new batch. Feeling as if anything else was a burden, we ordered 2 sangrias. We sat outside and the owner, albeit in a VERY friendly manner, pretty much ran everyone off. We are still sitting in their courtyard, before closing time, and the owners left 10 minutes ago. Still not sure what they do here besides sell sangria?? Not coming back. Not worth the effort.
google avatar

Tim Y.

Yelp
Great $12 tasting of five wines from this small batch winery. Local grapes make for some very unique and drinkable wines. I enjoyed all five and can say I have never tasted anything quite like it. They don't serve food so you can bring your own and sit enjoying a bottle you've purchased ($35-43) on their covered patio or inside. Bought a bottle of 2017 Cabernet and the owner even walked it over to my hotel next door since I couldn't make it before close (Gold Rush). It's going to make a nice gift for my friend who is a Cabernet fan whom I don't think has tried this wine yet.

Yelp
Surprising little secret of Julian! Fantastic location right off the main drag, with an exceptional management team. We loved our little charcuterie board and the wine was delicious! We will definitely be back and I didn't really want to write a nice review because I don't want anyone else to find the secret! Ha ha. Will be back, and we're going to try out their downtown location soon.

Yelp
nice little winery in the middle of downtown. setup was really nice, even during these covid times. space was well utilized, but, it was pretty full the beautiful fall afternoon that we came by. i got one of their world famous sangrias and surprisingly it was delicious. i also got a malbec for mama. that was good too and we picked up a couple bottles for the B&B. good service and their attention to covid safety details was remarkable. highly recommend!

Yelp
Like many who will be reading this, I found my way here on a day trip to Julian. We were on our way to the record shop up the hill when we heard that this place was locally famous for their sangria, naturally, I was in. The gal helping us from behind the bar was extremely attentive and friendly. The sangria was magically delicious. It was light, fruity and didn't taste too strongly of alcohol. Had I not been driving in a few hours I would have gladly had three more. Their patio outside is a great spot for chatting with other folks who are enjoying the town for the day. Overall, it was a really lovely experience. If you find yourself in Julian I strongly encourage you to make a stop here and enjoy some sangria.

Yelp
We ran into BlueDoor Winery while visiting Downtown Julian. This winery is super chill off the beaten path on a side street in Julian. It's super peaceful and has a beautiful courtyard to drink your wine. The owner Cameron and the winery dog Oliver are super sweet. She doesn't push their wine club and she just wants you to enjoy your wine and time. On a side note, the fresh made Sangria is to die for.
google avatar

Vaughnmarie G.

Yelp
Be sure to stop by Blue Door Winery for an Ice Cold Sangria. Tucked away one block off the main drag in Julian, the tiny winery has an inviting outdoor patio. The owners are welcoming and accomodating and visiting the winery completed our girls weekend. Be sure to visit Blue Door Winery while in Julian
google avatar

Giena L.

Yelp
The tasting room host was so knowledgable and nice. Definitely learned a lot about wine and grapes. And they really are a local winery, all of their grapes are from San Diego or Santa Barbara. All they do are big bold reds. Even if reds aren't your thing, you should still taste them and I'm sure you'll be craving a fat juicy steak or stinky cheese tray to go with that bottle of wine you're ultimately going to buy here. The tasting room itself is decorated and curated very nicely. And they are licensed in a huge patio area where there are other shops in, so take a glass and walk around! Definitely a must try! They are also located in San Diego- their headquarters. Needless to say I'm hooked and all about their Barbera!

Yelp
Awesome sangria!!! After a thoroughly disappointing tasting at another winery, we didn't want to pass this place up but were gun shy to go for a whole other tasting......but their homemade sangria sounded like it just might do the trick WELL worth it! Fruity & flavorful w/ a nice prominence of ginger ale, this homemade recipe was the perfect remedy to the other winery debacle & allowed us to enjoy their adorable furry baby Sebastian, as well as the patio & fun music they were playing, on the lovely sunny day Alas, given we had to drive back to San Diego & had just had a tasting ( elsewhere ) plus a glass of their sangria, we didn't want to go overboard & try out another full-flight tasting.......but given a different day & another trip to Julian, Blue Door would definitely be on our list!
