London’s Best East African Restaurants: Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Somali | Eater London

"Green Lanes battles probably only Seven Sisters for the title of the north London version of Old Kent Road. One of the longest roads in the capital, the thoroughfare features another host of global food offerings most dominated by those of Cypriot, Greek and Turkish descent, but Blue Nile marks out its place of proclaimed mixed Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage. The special reservations here are on the breakfast menu, not seen at many other east African restaurants. Foul (or Fuul) medames is a favourite morning starter across north and east Africa as well the middle east, a mash of fava beans, greens, and herbs. Kitcha fitfit shredded flatbread in berbere spice and tesmi clarified butter alongside the self-described “super-juicy eggs” with onions and tomatoes will get anyone’s stomach prepped for the rest of the day." - Riaz Phillips

Yelp
My friend and I both got the same vegetarian dish. She loved everything about it. Unfortunately, I found the red lentils a bit too salty for my liking & the green beans tasted a bit funny to me. Other than that, service was good, nice ambience.

Yelp
After checking into my hostel late at night, I was thankful to find this restaurant doesn't close until midnight. I ordered the chicken leg with chili dip on injera and it was just the right heartiness to satisfy my appetite. I'm very glad the staff was friendly and happy to serve us even right before closing.

Yelp
It is our first night in berlin and we are starving. The restaurant is nearby where we stay and commerating our first day here, we say what the heck! Let's try our first Ethiopian meal ever in german. One Word - Amazing! We ordered the Lamb rack and beef goulash combination. The beef goulash came in a huge platters full of stewed long beans, pickled vegetables and others on top of what seems to be huge pancakes. The lamb came on the side on a candle heated serving platter. They also gave two extra heaping piles on pancakes on top in case those are not enough. You're supposed to eat using your hand, picking up the multiple toppings using the pancake as your spoon. Awesome idea btw and totally makes sense if you've ever been to southeast asia ( I grew up eating half my food using hand instead of chopsticks or forks =p) On the first bite of the lamb, you can't help but say oooooo. All the spices are blended well together and the meat melt on your mouth. It was that good. The spices in beef goulash was blended expertly together and for me, taste comforting. The vegetables, beans, and "pancakes" round up the healthy balanced meal. Overall a great place with friendly owner. I'm glad that my first Ethiopian experience is in blue Nile =)

Yelp
My second Ethiopian dinner here in Berlin. The first one was at the competitor. So, of course one has to try this one too. The prices are same, however, the service is not as good as the competitor´s service. The dinner takes for ever to get to your table, which is not the reason for the deducted star but the platter combo for 3 people was less than the platter combo at the other place for 2 people. The place is a bit run down and dirty. I really liked the coffee ceremony corner and hope to come back here once during that time. However, I am not sure I will be coming back, if the competitor´s food and service is better. But still a nice place to eat with your hands!

Yelp
Around April-May of each year I make my way to Berlin to attend a big conference at "Station" Berlin. The vent itself is great but like most conferences, at some point you want to grab some good people you've met and go eat somewhere cozy and delicious.... and nearby. A few blocks walk from the venue over the years we have come to know Blue Nile -- a big and welcoming restaurant with delicious food, kind service, and good prices. As an added bonus, we you go there you'll often see families who seem to be friends or familiar with the owners.. makes for a nice atmosphere to go with the already great food. I even appreciate the option for shared vegetarian only ethiopian dishes. At other places they will often say ok half the plate is meat the other half is veggie, at Blue Nile they do that little extra that makes it that much more pleasant. Highly recommended, eat, drink, and don't worry about the price, it is not expensive.

Yelp
My first foray into the world of Ethiopian food was an absolute treat thanks to Blue Nile. Rather than having descended into a watered-down theme park version of East Africa like some other Ethiopian places, Blue Nile is authentic Ethiopian food. We had heaps served up on top of our sourdough, which was perfectly squishy yet not soggy, and the spicing was just right. Lovely decor inside, and good service, too.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of having eaten good Ethiopean food in Detroit and in a few restaurants in Chicago, and was very pleased with the level of quality at Blue Nile in Kreuzberg. The food was great, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was very cozy. I will definitely become a regular there.

Yelp
awesome food, very friendly atmosphere. The Ethiopian coffee ceremony on the weekends is a nice touch everybody gets a complimentary cup or two plus a bowl of popcorn to nibble. I tend to come back every time im in the city.
