Blue Oak BBQ

A couple of friends were down from Kentucky and we're looking for a good place to eat, I recommended this place and joined them. Said friend suggested we get the all meats and all sides and we could all share, I had no complaints because his employer was paying for it. First off I'd like to start with I'm hard on restaurants, I cook a lot so I don't have high expectations going into a place, but everything on the tray was great! All the meats were cooked perfectly, moist and tender with the exception of the trip it was a little tough, but everything had great flavor and the texture was on point. Next comes the sides, the chili was so tasty (I know chili at a bbq place is not something you see everyday) and the chicken noodle soup was really creamy and delicious too, the baked beans were a little sweet with a little heat, potato salad was pretty good and the slaw was kinda basic, but the brussel sprouts were the star of the show! Super cool place, great atmosphere, and it's not too bad expensive. This was the third time I have eaten here in the past two weeks and that says a lot because there are a lot of good places to eat around here. Oh the gumbo is on point too, be sure to try it too!

A couple of friends and I visited Blue Oak BBQ for lunch. I ordered the 3 meats with brisket, wings and ribs. Ordering was smooth and the food came out quick and was hot and fresh. All the meat was cooked very well. It was a good experience and I will definitely be back.

You have got to try the fries here. Its the perfect amount of seasoning. I truly thought it was a random BBQ place. Not disappointed in any way and I was impressed with this spicy chicken sandwich. I should have ordered another one to go. I will do a better job and get a variety of items to do a proper review. If the chicken is this good, makes me wonder about everything else. Looking forward to enjoying new local treats.

Amazing brisket! Recommended by the bartender and I did not regret the decision. Drinks we great and affordable as well. My only complaint is bar seating does not have a great view for TV’s. Tables seem to have a better view with a big projector.

Service is wonderful like stellar; but the food is absolutely not it to put it respectfully the portions are horrendously small. The meat is bland. The mac and cheese is atrocious. The only thing I like were the boudin balls….

I’d heard mixed reviews about this place from friends, so I decided to try it for myself. My first visit started off promising. The atmosphere and vibes were great upon walking in, and the menu looked fantastic—everything seemed like it was setting up for a win. I ordered the two-meat plate: brisket and ribs, with potato salad and baked beans on the side. When the food arrived, I was surprised by how small the portions were—one thin slice of brisket, two small rib bones, decent-sized sides, and a garnish of pickle and onion. With portions that tiny, I figured the flavor had to be extraordinary to justify it. Unfortunately, it was anything but. I started with the ribs, which were mostly gristle and fell apart into pieces. I managed to carve out one small bite of actual meat—and that was it. The brisket was okay (not great), and the table sauces were fine, but with just one slice, there wasn’t much to work with. The sides were the only bright spot. The baked beans were meaty with a nice sweet-smoky flavor, and the potato salad was a tasty mayonnaise-based mix with red potatoes and green onions. For $27 (including a drink), I expected a lot more meat—and for the meat I did get to be significantly better. The service and atmosphere were solid—that’s where the one star comes from—but a barbecue place can’t survive on vibes alone. The food needs to be plentiful and excellent, and this wasn’t. I won’t be returning, though I wish the restaurant luck. It’s only been open about a year, and I hope it finds its footing. Excellent range of BBQ meats. Both lean and fatty briskets. Smoked turkey that isn’t overly Smokey. Their pulled pork is my favorite of all the options, and the brussels sprouts are the best I’ve ever had. The bar staff are friendly and attentive, even on the busiest days.

The food was average I would say. The brisket was yummy, but the tater tots were not up to par for me. It was not cooked all the way or something strange.

Perfect eating experience with remarkable food, and relaxed atmosphere. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Had the smoked prime rib special...makes me salivate to just think about it again. Wife had chicken and sides. ALL of it was top notch. Still talking about it two days later. Will be back!

The location and ambiance of blue oak is lovely! I had great service, the cashier was so sweet and super patient with my family as we were having a hard time deciding on what to get since it was our first visit. She even gave us suggestions. Now onto the food I must say I'm not really a fan. The Mac and cheese was super bland and dry, it seems like it was old. The brisket and the wings really didn't have any flavor either. I can say the brisket was slightly tender. My dad ordered the creamed spinach, chicken and the ribs. He loved the creamed spinach but the ribs wasn't to his liking, they tasted like they were oven baked then maybe thrown on the grill for a couple minutes. The chicken leg & thigh were slightly dry but they were decent sizes! The smoked peach cobbler and ice was delicious! I didn't have many peaches which I'm okay with because i prefer the crust on pies. That ice was just a extra touch i didn't know i needed! Overall my visit here was not bad i suggest everyone try it out and see how you like it. But i personally wouldn't return.

Wow. We visited last night and I have to say this was a treat. We had a Rocket City burger and the chopped brisket. The burger is made from ground brisket. This burger was very flavorful. I love the BBQ sauces on the table so I could try them all. The least expected sauce was my fave. The jerk sauce had a little pineapple twang to it and complimented the burger well. The brisket was tender and really tasty. Next time I'll just get that. Fries and tots fried in beef fat were OK and not a "special" as I wanted them to be. Mac and cheese, as many mentioned did have a strong garlic flavor but my daughter loved it. This is a "stand in line and order, fix your drink at the drink station, take a seat, and they bring in to your table place". Nothing wrong with that. The tea was great too. (a must for a great BBQ place). We did not have dessert but we got to try the smoked peach cobbler next time. I need to try that jalapeno cheddar sausage cornbread I missed too.

Great bbq! The Brussels sprouts are amazing. Cooked perfectly and covered in a delicious, sticky honey sauce. Brisket, pork and chicken hit the spot! Definitely a great stop!

Found this recommendation here (thanks, Yelpers!) and stopped by on a Wednesday evening around 6:30. There was a good crowd of diners, several at the bar watching sports in the big screens, and a few people in line. Atmosphere is lively, with music and the noise of diners talking and eating. It's counter service, delivered to your table. I decided to try something different for me: an order of 5 dry-rub smoked wings ($9) and a bowl of brisket and sausage gumbo ($10). I grabbed my fountain drink and chose a table, and my order took less than 10 minutes to arrive. The wings were delicious, not overly meaty and full of flavor. I liked the Alabama white sauce that came along for dipping, as well as a few pieces of celery. Five was the perfect amount,, but you can add five more for an extra $9. I also really liked to the gumbo, although it reminded me more of a stew than a gumbo. There was a scoop of rice in the middle and diced green onions on top, but it didn't quite have that dark roux flavor I expect in a gumbo. Nonetheless, it was still delicious and I ate every bite. I'd read on Yelp that the biggest complaint here are the flies, and that is the truth. They're really kind of everywhere and certainly annoying. I noticed several unwiped tables around me, and that could be part of it. I would come back here again and next time, I plan to order the smoked peach cobbler.

Some of the best smoked chicken and brisket I have ever had. Tender, delicious, flavorful. The Asian ginger slaw is incredible. The cajuny mac and cheese was basically heaven. And not pictured but get the pork cracklins!

Comfy and airy ambiance! Everything we ordered were delicious: Ribs, baked beans were kickass, pork belly crackling chicharrón Szechuan rub, pickle slices, etc. You can get combo of sweet tea and unsweetened tea, so that it's not too sweet. Service was good! Highly recommend.

I chose Blue Oak as my new dining experience out this week. I've been curious to try it since it opened as it came pretty hyped up and I love bbq. This restaurant is located in the trendy and flashy MidCity development. I imagine it's a popular place to go before a visit to the Orion Amphitheater. It has a sort of sports bar / juke joint type of feel. As with many other businesses in MidCity, there's street parking nearby, with the caveat that you MUST back into a spot or risk a ticket. I chose instead to park in the larger lot in front of the development and walk over since spaces are limited and I didn't feel like maneuvering my car that carefully. There was no wait when I arrived for a later lunch. One sign directed me to counter service and another option for full service was also on display. I chose counter to be lower maintenance; that seems to be the choice of most. There's a nice large bar near the entrance and an open-air patio. The menu is on a few screens on the wall. I had a bit of a hard time seeing without my glasses but I managed. The young women working at the counter were very pleasant and made nice small talk. They have a few daily specials and then a bunch of consistent bbq staples. I ordered the pulled pork plate with fries and garlic macaroni and cheese. I was somewhat disappointed to find they do not offer Coke Zero here, only Diet Coke. I got my number and found a spot. Not too many spots for parties less than four, but I didn't feel bad at a 4-top since it wasn't busy. I used the restroom while I waited and found it very clean with nice, private stalls. Three bbq sauces awaited me on the table. One was a sort of spicy Carolina sauce, another was their standard sauce, and the last was a jerk bbq sauce. The Carolina sauce wasn't particularly spicy and was so incredibly watery it was hard to use without dousing your entire plate with it. The standard sauce was just okay; again, too thin and watery for my preference, and also a little too vinegary. I like a sweet Memphis style sauce. The closest to that was the jerk bbq sauce but it had a strong nutmeg/cinnamon flavor to it that was a little off-putting. I didn't particularly care for any of the sauces. The side items, especially the beef fat fries, were pretty good. The fries were hot and crispy and had discernible seasoning (though I wouldn't have been mad at a bit more). The garlic mac and cheese was HEAVY on the garlic and I couldn't eat all of it, but I did enjoy a few bites before it got overpowering. The crumbly breadcrumbs were a nice touch. The pork was...not for me. It featured a lot of burnt ends; I tend to like the interior cuts of meat better. It was decently smoky and tender, but the main problem was it was overwhelmingly greasy and fatty. It bled through the container it was served in and left a gigantic puddle on the paper before it was even placed in front of me. It was practically swimming in it. Greasier than even the fresh fries. Not awesome, especially when you can't find a sauce you like to try to drown it out. I can't say I'd never return, but it definitely won't be on the top of my list. I do appreciate the nice service, clean bathrooms, and tasty French fries. Maybe if there's a next time I'll come on a day when their bbq potato is on special. That's a reliable favorite for me.

Excellent BBQ all around. The jalapeño cheddar sausage cornbread was out of this world! Mac n Cheese is a heavy on the garlic if you're into that (it works very well). We had pulled pork, sliced brisket, chopped brisket, coleslaw, Mac n cheese, baked beans, jalapeño cheddar sausage cornbread, and mini pulled pork nachos. Going to have to go back and try the turkey when they have it!

This has become our new barbecue favorite! I can't begin to explain how amazing this food is! ALL OF IT! The folks are so happy and helpful! And we love that we can watch the games from any TV! PS: GET THE SMOKED PEACH COBBLER!

Ordered their Two meat plate with Brisket and house made green onion sausage link. Ordered brussel sprouts on the side and broccoli cheddar soup extra. Cheddar was not completed melted in the soup and lumped up. Soup was also salty. Brussel sprouts were perfectly roasted and smothered with a sweet sauce. I loved every bit of them. Coming to the Brisket, it melted in my mouth. It was fatty and delicious! Definitely one of the best I ever tried. Onion sausage was satiating and well made.

Everything I tried here -- meat, sandwich, sides -- was "wow, that's good." Just some really great food. Lovely vibe and patio seating, too.

Blue Oak is part of the new development of apartments and businesses cropping up around The Orion theater. I really enjoyed the smoke on the brisket, and it was lean with a great crust. The side Mac and cheese was one of the best bbq sides I've ever had! It was creamy with a nice crunch on top-miles above the usual vat-produced cheesy Mac's at other places. The fries were average but I ordered them to try the different bbq sauces they offered. Wasn't thrilled with any of the 3 tableside sauces but I loved their version of white sauce (extra charge unfortunately). It's hard to stand out in bbq, and between the lean brisket and great Mac and cheese, I was impressed. Wish I didn't have to pay extra for the barbecue sauces I wanted though.

If I could give this place more stars I would. I ordered their Apple Fried Chicken Bacon maple syrup with Texas toast sandwich and was amazed. One of the best meals I've ever had. I paired it with the fries and creamed spinach. What a meal! The service was great and they had college games playing on a big screen. No better atmosphere! You all rock! Keep it up!

Our first stop after landing and getting off the plane and it did not disappoint. Upon parking which there is plenty in either the lot on the street. You walk into a counter with a ton of tv menus to order. I will admit I have great version but the tv menus were small to read and a bit difficult with the font selected. We started with an order of smoked wings in their special smoked peach bbq flavor. The wings were amazing and the sauce was sweet and smokey. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich which had a sweet and spicy glaze, pickles & white bbq sauce served on a toasted sesame bun. I opted to not have the white bbq sauce bc I am not a mayo fan at all. I ordered a side of beef fat tots because you can't go wrong with anything fried in tallow as is has flavor and a perfect crunch. Also ordered the pit viper sandwich which was a spicy jerk pulled pork, slaw, fresh jalapeños. Absolutely delicious and fresh flavored. We opted to sit inside as it was much too hot for their outdoor area even with the fans and shade. Service was great except for when we ordered I asked the girl behind the counter what the white bbq sauce was her response was "idk it's an Alabama thing". Which was not really helpful so we ordered the white sauce on the side.

Our first visit to Blue Oak, and looking forward to our next one! Saturday lunch time, the place was busy-- a good sign. I had the brisket (fatty cut) with cole slaw and their popular brussel sprouts. My wife had the tri-tip with roasted potatoes and smoked, yes, smoked zucchini. Thumbs up all around! Finally, a place for good brisket in Huntsville! The brisket was cooked and sliced perfectly, very juicy. The brussel sprouts were outstanding and the cole slaw-- with a ginger sesame dressing-- was killer. But more than the food was the vibe-- the kind of place you want to hang out in all day. Good music, nice interior. We also met Cody, one of the owners, who wasn't just very nice but asked about the food and listened to our feedback. We look forward to going again!

We went here for lunch today since we've been wanting to try it. It was late afternoon, so it wasn't too busy. You order then sit. Food came out pretty fast. I ordered the half chicken with tots and coleslaw. I had enough food to bring half home. They had 3 bbq sauces to try. They were ok. I didn't like their jerk one because it had nutmeg or something weird in it. The spicy Carolina was probably my favorite. My husband had the kodi plate and the garlic Mac and cheese and brussel sprouts. His sides were fantastic too. I did think it was a bit expensive. It cost $54 for 2 plates with drinks. And you don't get table service. Yet they still have a tipping option at checkout. I think a little ridiculous.

Came here for the first time a few weeks ago. Sat at the bar the Bartender was excellent, she was on top of it when it. And to her drink knowledge and recommendations. The food was quick to come out and was hot and fresh. Everything tasted great l, the portions were awesome and priced fairly. As I mentioned we sat at the bar and the lay out was pretty good, open you could see outside, there is a walk up bar side outside and outside seating. The place was pretty nice. I recommend it for sure!!

Great meats, interesting sides (not just the predictable beans and slaw of some BBQ joints!), and nice sophisticated atmosphere (not a BBQ dive!) in the stylish Mid City development make Blue Oak a good addition to the Huntsville/Madison area. Great imported concept from New Orleans!

Some of the best BBQ that I've ever had. The service was extremely quick and the servers and order takers were very courteous. I highly recommend Blue Oak to anyone visiting or living in Huntsville.

The food is always on point. Love the beer options and atmosphere. If you're close to mid cities... stop in.. you won't be disappointed!!

Pork belly cracklings were really good, ribs were fall off the bone tender and had a delicious flavor. Pulled pork was above average but not as good as I was expecting

This was a first time experience for me and my wife along with our grandson. We happen to visit on Wednesday night and after learning kids eat free on Wednesday I was pleasantly surprised! First off the food was outstanding with the brisket being one of the best I ever had. The sides for all of us were great and I would highly recommend the yams. Overall this place is was outstanding especially with the outside dining option. Try this place as I can promise you will not be disappointed.

The poor reviews people have left here are crazyyyyy! Southerners love unflavored, bland food and that's not what you're going to get at Blue Oak. All of the meats are smoked perfectly, the brisket burnt ends are THE SHIT. The mac&cheese is very different, definitely has some garlic flavor and some kick, delicious. The pork cracklin's and brussel sprouts are top tier. Their burgers are made with brisket, they're super juicy and flavorful. Seriously the best burger I've had in a long time. The spicy chicken sandwich is one of their most popular items, while it is delicious, it's a little too spicy for me. It's walk up counter/order style, similar to taco mama, which I like because then I can't get mad at having a bad server. Everyone is super friendly, we are greeted right when we walk in and everything is clean! The bar is large, inside and outside seating with tons of TV's. The frozen drinks are great and the liquor/beer selection is nice. Definitely recommend this place during these good weather days! Not necessarily pricey, the food is definitely filling and worth the cost.

Little pricey but some.of the better BBQ I've experienced in the Huntsville area. Definitely worth the visit.

Here for the first time. A lot bigger space than I thought, and packed house! We sat out on the patio, the bar is inside and partially outside which I enjoyed. Bbq (pulled pork) was good, but the brisket and smoked chicken is great! We shared a platter the Kodi combo to try everything - comes w pulled pork, smoked chicken thigh and leg, brisket, Mac n cheese, and Brussels (white bread upon request). Starting with the wings, smoked - chewy not crispy - so based on your preference! My favorite side was the Mac n cheese - Cajun spice with a toasted bread crumb on top. Favorite meat on the platter was definitely the smoked chicken (delicious). Three sauces to choose from. Seasonal drinks and food specials all well. Happy hour M-F (4-6PM I think) with good food and drink specials. I enjoyed the Spring frozen drink great addition to MidCity.

The space is nice and big. Lots of seating inside and out. Really nice set up and quite spacious. The service was attentive and fast. Even though they bring our food to our table by our number, they still checked up on us to see if everything was OK. They also came and cleared our table for us instead of putting the trays away ourselves, which we appreciated. Now the food. My husband ordered the Smoked BBQ burger and tots. He liked it but it didn't excite him. It tasted like a normal burger. He didn't think it was worth $16. I ordered a la cart items, which were the chicken thigh & legs, and 2 ribs. I loved the chicken. It was tasty and juicy! The ribs were great too. Nice and tender. I loved the Jerk BBQ sauce and Spicy Carolina BBQ Sauce they provide at our table. The Jerk was my favorite. Our total was about $45 with everything picture and 2 fountain drinks. I can admit it's pretty pricey but I thought it was worth it. My husband on the other hand, will most likely order something else next time.

The food is amazing! Service is amazing. And the place is just overall a good place to eat. The brisket is some of the best in town. Side (Mac and cheese) are really good. It's a little expensive but you get what you pay for... plenty of seating. Wide open floor plan so not stuffy at all.

I thought we would try this new restaurant in Mid city since my son loves barbecue. He loved the fatty brisket. The thing that bothered my husband and I while eating was all the flies flying while trying to eat. The service was ok. Just order at the counter and they bring to you. The big TV was great.

Had the special: Alabama Dipper. This is a must try! So good, gravy was awesome, brisket tender!

Wow! The most underwhelming BBQ I've ever ate! Very bland for BBQ. The meat is served in a small portion and the BBQ part is the part where you pick one of three watery sauces to pour on the meat. There are so many great BBQ and smoked meat places in the southeast with multiple sauces and rubs, that just makes your mouth water thinking about the food, but Blue Oak is not one of them. 7 pm on a Wednesday, they only had 3 of the 7 meats available, (brisket, turkey and chicken). They were also out of 1 of their sides. Speaking of sides, the potato salad and mac and cheese was very salty. They only have 3 BBQ sauces available, I don't know what the flavors were, I couldn't find their names on the menu. The Diet Coke was flat according to my companion, I thought the sweet tea was good, but if you wanted unsweetened tea, they were out. Pluses, the restaurant was very clean, short wait for your food, nice area of town. More minuses, when I went to their website to contact them first about my experience, the website stated that "location not found ", for the Huntsville AL store. I would highly suggest a different restaurant for BBQ, if you are in Huntsville!

I don't write many bad reviews. I always try to give the benefit of the doubt. I have worked in the service industry so I know the challenges. My family and I went on a Saturday afternoon after seeing recs on a local Huntsville page. We sat at the bar and were given one menu for 3 of us. I had to request a drink after waiting 10+ minutes. The glass for my bfs drink was filthy inside and out. He could literally use his paper towel and clean it. The food was meh, not hot, and underwhelming and I love bbq. Super disappointing for us. There were 4 people behind the bar. We heard everything from complaints about the shift change book to inter- staff issues. Customer service was nil. I hope I hit it on an off day but not looking like it from the other reviews here. Unfortunate, because we need good restaurants in HSV.

Food was quick, even on a Sunday afternoon. Is nice to be able to order at the counter or do a sit down service. We loved the kodi kombo but didn't realize just how much food it is so wish we would've just gotten one for the two of us. The banana pudding was more soupy than pudding in my opinion but we lovedddd the cinnamon in it. The ranch with the tots was amazing too. The brussel sprouts were to die for. 10/10 would recommend and will come back each time I'm back!

I waited 40 minutes today to get my food and I had ordered $105 family brisket meal and the pictures were all sliced brisket and they brought me shredded dried out brisket that tasted like pulled pork. Definitely not $100 worth of food. It was a joke and I had to wait way too long to get it and all they did was apologize saying somebody didn't show up that day but yet there was like 15 people in the kitchen.

"Richly Priced" The big issue seemed to be slightly undercooked wings, so this review will reflect that. The brisket Sammie was terrific except the sauce on the bun a bit sour. The chicken sammmie we would rate a 7.5 mostly because the price is $15. The tots were decent. Wait staff good. Probably will come back but will avoid the wings. The wings were $27 for 10 wings which is too much to charge. Potato salad was weak. Baked beans strong.

THIS IS GOOD BBQ!!!! If you're contemplating... just go! I went on a Thursday night with my bestie and her mom (not really busy but had business).. got the three meat plate with brisket, jerk wings and ribs as the meats. 10/10. All had great flavor! The jerk bbq sauce is very good! Potato salad 7.5/10 and Mac and cheese 6/10. Potato salad needed a little mustard to me but still good. I just think the spices used in the mac and cheese weren't my favorites but good nevertheless. Service was cool, they seemed very distracted and didn't check on us much but I got their attention if I really needed to. I was super sad that they didn't have banana pudding to try but hopefully next time. For my food, drink and a nice tip I paid $45 total.

We love Blue Oak! The food is amazing--I particularly enjoy the bbq nachos and the daiquiris and my husband loves the chicken sandwich.
