The Essential Places to Eat and Drink in East Lansing

"This small business centered within the Grand River strip offers a variety of coffee, tea, and small breakfast items like bacon, egg, and cheese bagels, muffins, scones. Students are able to enjoy the cozy vibes from this shop to study and can enjoy Blue Owls open mic night that occurs several times a month." - Julianne Noye

Yelp
Don't have a ton to write since I only got a cold brew. It was, however, tasty! It's a weird spot in a mini mall that is on the other side of a parking lot from another mini mall. But there is some outdoor seating, though it is out of the sun. The choices for coffee are plentiful. They did have pastries, but I did not try any. The guy was super friendly.

Yelp
I stopped by Blue Owl in search of something sweet. I got a hot cocoa and cinnamon scone. The hot cocoa was just basic powdered instant mix but an off-brand which was definitely not up to my Swiss Miss expectations. The cinnamon scone looked great but tasted like bland crunchy dough. Not a good place to get a sugar fix. My buddy ordered coffee and after 10 minutes we asked if the drink was ready. The lady responded, "it was acting funny so I'm making another one." Who knew that pouring hot water over coffee beans can have complications? We got a good laugh out of this silly non-issue. Blue Owl E Lansing is a coffeehouse scene with pastel colored walls, soft spoken white female employees, pictures from local artists hanging by the windows, and ugly mismatched furniture. The bathrooms are located down the hall into another business and you need to ask for a key. It was clean, the music was at a reasonable volume, and the employee was nice enough to remake a cup of coffee since the first pour was somehow uncooperative. I'm not hating on this place for being hipster - to each their own, ya know. Instead, it was the tasteless snacks and lack of visibility on pricing that irked me. You need to have very good eyes to read the chalkboards hanging behind the counter. There was merchandise and miscellaneous food items without price tags. Not even the website has prices listed so you'll either have to hold up the line by asking questions or just deal with the surprise total amount.

Yelp
I always try to check out a new to me place when I'm in East Lansing, because so much has changed since I graduated from MSU. Nate and I were passing through town recently and stopped in to Blue Owl Coffee. It was pretty busy inside with students studying and lots of people getting to-go orders. The menu is a little hard to almost impossible to read, so look at it online ahead of time if you're able. Even better, order ahead on their app so you don't have a long wait! There were only two employees working so we did end up waiting for quite a bit. The person taking our order was patient and kind. My go-to order at any coffee shop is an oat milk latte. I got it with vanilla flavoring but they have a lot of interesting flavors, including spearmint, orange, ginger, clove, and bourbon honey. They had a menu of seasonal drinks that we were curious about - they had overall flavor profiles listed but didn't indicate whether the drinks were lattes, etc. Nate got one with chocolate and mint. The longer wait time gave us a chance to look around - there is a lot of owl decor everywhere that seems like it came from thrift shops. It's definitely a departure from places like Foster Coffee Company or Madcap with super sleek, modern vibes. It's more homey and retro/vintage feeling. This doesn't factor into my review score at all, it's just something I noticed. The latte was good, creamy and smooth, but I didn't get a lot of vanilla flavor. The mint and chocolate latte was my favorite, as it had a lot of chocolate and mint flavor that I could really taste. Overall this was a fun spot to check out.

Yelp
I recommend their spring special the sparkling espresso! I stand by everything in my previous review.

Yelp
Stand up place. Wonderful baristas, very personable. Cozy vibe. Best coffee in East Lansing.

Yelp
Very pleasant place to chill and have a beverage. The coffee was good. Baristas were nice. One star off since washroom facilities are across the hall in another business!?! .

Yelp
Great location and lots of options but Strange Matter Co is so much better IMHO. Maybe we got them at a bad time but staff seemed stressed and short tempered. We would need to try again to see if it was a one off.

Yelp
This coffee shop gave me such university/college vibe. The kind where I imagine I would go to do my work at early Saturday morning if I'm still in school. But for anyone really. The place is spacious with lots of place to sit, although plugs availability might not be as many. Service is really friendly. Anyway, the thing that stand out from their menu to me is their coffee cocktail. Important to note, these are NON-alcoholic drinks. But they are coffee mixed with various other ingredients that are not just simply latte. I tried the Ol' Blue which was cold brew with bourbon honey, fresh orange, cherry + bitters. Certainly a refreshing drink! I enjoyed it a lot. Something I would probably crave from time to time and if I can go back I'd probably would like to try each flavor

Yelp
Great coffee and great service. Plenty of seats to relax and enjoy your brew Coffee cocktails are creative and tasty.

Yelp
We had a great coffee and cards date at the blue owl a few weekends ago. They were out of nitro so I settled for a cold brew and it hit the spot. There were tons of students hanging out to study, do homework, or socialize, and I think they have free Wi-Fi. There are plenty of restaurants nearby if you are looking for breakfast/brunch/lunch to go to after your morning brew, and if you venture out during an event, festival, game day, or farmers market, there is bound to be a crowd!

Yelp
Cool place to grab a cup. Fantastic location and interesting decor. Perfect for people watching. Great addition to downtown EL. I'll certainly be back!

Yelp
I went for the first time on the night of MSU Safe Halloween! After trucking my kid up and down MAC all night with a friend we had to stop in and warm up with some coffee! I got a seasonal spooky latte that did not disappoint. The ambiance was so cozy and hip. Loved the nice deep coffee cups. Just added to the overall relaxed atmosphere.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop. Dropped by Friday around noon for a sandwich and a coffee, and stuck around to work for a few hours. Coffee/Drinks: I got a pour over, so I can't vouch for their coffee cocktails. But I will say the pour over was really tasty. It looks like they had about 4 kinds of coffee to choose from (with 1 of them being decaf). The names of the coffee are on a board, but you can ask what they're like if you're not sure. The coffee cocktails sounded pretty good though. I'll have to go back and get one sometime. Food: They have a nice little display case of baked goods, which again I can't vouch for taste-wise since I got sandwich. The sandwiches are prepackaged and, when I stopped by, they only had one kind out (Caprese) so that's what I got. On the plus side, it was really good, and I was ultimately glad I got it. I do wish that they had some more choices for sandwiches than just 1, but since they're still fairly new at this location, maybe that'll come with time. I wouldn't count it as a drawback unless you have very specific tastes or cravings that day. But if you're a bit aimless and like "look, I just need lunch," it's perfect. Service: The service was fantastic. The barista who took my order cheerfully fielded my questions about my food and coffee options, and chased down the previous customer who had forgotten their card in the reader. The barista who made my pour over also came to find me to let me know that they only had 2 pour over pots that were both processing previous orders already so it would be a bit longer for mine. Ultimately, very attentive despite it being fairly busy. Working space: There's quite a bit of room, actually, and lots of power outlets around the edges. As I left I even saw that there's a second smaller seating area in the back through some glass doors. It was fairly busy but I didn't have any trouble finding a seat by an outlet for just myself. There is free WiFi, though my computer kept bringing up pop-ups about certificates and authentication which was a bit annoying. Parking: Of course parking going to be annoying, it's right by campus. I parked in the garage just to the north. I'm not sure if they validate (tbh I didn't ask), but it would be nice if they did and they advertised it. Again, maybe something that could develop as they settle in at that location. Verdict: I look forward to going back!

Yelp
Tried the Blue Howler and Wake The Dead Nitro coffees and they were amazing. Also had the Shakaroto and it was smooth. Terrance is Very knowledgeable, friendly and easy to talk to.

Yelp
Jesus, the wait was like 15 minutes. One guy behind the counter (working alone) and having zero idea how his dragging a** was creating such a long wait. Coffee ain't worth this long of a wait. Sry guys, but time is money

Yelp
Nice, quick service. Excellent latte. Was just visiting overnight and was glad to find good coffee near my hotel.

Yelp
Grea coffee shop we like to visit whenever we are in town.

Yelp
Went to get coffee at 7:48 on Monday, 19 Aug and then on 7:40 on Tuesday, 20 Aug to find out the hours posted on the door (7 AM - 10 PM) are not correct until MSU is back in session. The door was unlocked on Tuesday so I walked in only to stand there with 2 other customers trying to figure out what was going on. Finally some young employee walked in the front door looking at us odd only to say they open at 8. The amazing part was the coffee shop was completely unmanned and unlocked for several minutes. So who ever opened the store on Tuesday, 20 Aug placed this business at risk of theft and employee safety.

Yelp
So happy blue owl opened another location. I've been going to their Reo town location for some time, but this is much more convenient. Great coffee, yummy treats, and a lots of places to sit.

Annie D.

Yelp
The last three times I went here they put real milk in my coffee despite me asking for the nondairy option. I'm severely lactose intolerant so this ruined the rest of my day. I can understand one mistake, maybe two, but three times putting dairy in my drink when I asked for nondairy is really upsetting. I will not be returning.

Yelp
I first discovered Blue Owl coffee shortly after they opened in Reo Town. I loved the coffee choices and chatted with one of the owners. I visited them several times before they were discovered and got very full . Fast forward to now and we were looking for places still ser ing coffee. Found that Blue Owl had spread its wings over more of the Lansing area, hence my visits to the East Lansing location. My husband likes hot chocolate and he said theirs was delicious. I loved their latte with brown sugar. So we have treated ourselves about once a week to stop by them. I am so grateful you stayed open during these interesting if not surreal times. Thanks

Yelp
They definitely know what they're doing. Cozy environment, staff is friendly and helpful, really fun ceramic drink-wear. Super strong, delicious espresso served in a ceramic espresso cup.

Yelp
We're regulars here and love it. Great coffee /lattes, very nice baristas. Today the barista suggested a lavender vanilla iced latte which is not typically something I would get but it's amazing!!

Yelp
New hot spot in East Lansing. Before Blue Owl there wasn't really a great spot to sip on hand crafted coffee and do some homework. Small menu but big flavors. If it's busy it is pretty loud so I don't recommend doing homework here on the weekends. If you're into music you can catch local coffee shop bands on certain nights. Excited to see what comes of this place in the future.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had. For something sweet, mocha with brown sugar. Very friendly barista too!

Yelp
I'm relatively new to coffee, and this place always makes me feel comfortable. I have all kinds of (probably silly) questions and the staff is nothing but accommodating and friendly. The drinks so far have been delicious and the space is very comfortable feeling. I'm so glad that downtown EL has another local coffee place!
google avatar

Kamille R.

Yelp
Unfortunately I don't live in EL any longer so I won't be able to go to Blue Owl often- but if I lived in town I'd probably come every day. The aesthetic, the quality, the variety, and the baristas are all amazing. I love lavender oat milk lattes which aren't the norm everywhere and Blue Owl has an amazing one. My friend also got an iced tea that was delicious. Both drinks were sweet/flavorful but not too sweet. Highly recommend you check them out!

Yelp
This is a great coffee shop with nitro coffees, they use pure oils for flavorings. Really delicious coffee and great bakery goods. I like that they're open later and the Rio town is a really nice location. Great little barbecue shop next door, pop on over! Cool vibe, musics not too loud and baristas are on point. Make sure you check out their coffees because the quality is amazing!

Yelp
Delicious coffee and great service! Overall better quality than other places in the Lansing area such as Strange Matter. Plus they have made it safe to go in and order coffee for takeout as opposed to curbside service only! Much better service that way!

Yelp
Great people, great place, terrible drinks. The Dubliner was disgusting. Simply put, they try to do too much with flavors that have little business meeting together. I love the cookies, and I'm sure the coffee at its most basic level is great, but don't try to branch out too far from the norm. I'm all about new things, but they just don't pull it off here, at least if the Dubliner is any indication.

Lucy B.

Yelp
one time i was having a really bad day and i was at blue owl drinking a silly little lavender latte and then i noticed that they were playing what a feeling by one direction. and then right after that they played olivia by one direction. im not even that big of a 1D fan but it was just very fierce and quite a lovely experience. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Cute decor, good coffee! $8.89 for a black coffee, a cookie, and one refill seems pricey to me...maybe offer one free refill (not on crafted drinks, course) rather than just a 25% discount on drip coffee. Might encourage people to stay longer.

Yelp
This coffee shop is great for studying! I came here on a Saturday morning around 8:30 and had my pick of the entire place for a study spot (not like it really matters - there are so many tables/desks/counters and LOTS of outlets there). I ordered a scone which was delicious, and an earl grey latte. I was able to get oat milk instead of regular because I'm lactose intolerant. I've never had oat milk at a coffee shop, but more should start using it since it frothes more like a real milk than other milk substitutes. The employees were very friendly as well.

Yelp
Got a bacon egg and cheese sandwich this morning, and then proceeded to find two sheets of paper (thin paper that seperates slices of cheese) in my sandwich. I then ate a few bites and was throwing up 30 minutes later. Be careful.

Yelp
Great coffee and awesome location. By far the best option for coffee and hanging out if you're in East Lansing. The staff is really great as well!

Yelp
The space here is great. We always go to get work done and enjoy good coffee! The staff are always nice and I love the unique drinks and cocktails!

Brad D.

Yelp
Dangerous place to get a cup of coffee. While there are signs on the door indicating that masks are required, inside, people are sitting there (without food or drink!) just chatting away, sans masks. This is the most irresponsible place in downtown East Lansing to get coffee. They clearly have no regard for public safety---if they enforce the mask policy, customers go away; if they don't enforce, lives go away. I guess Blue Owl has made their choice!

Julie K.

Yelp
It was my first time at Blue Owl and it was great! I couldn't really decide what to get so Julie offered to make an orange-mocha cold brew and it was so good! They made sure that it was just how I wanted it and were so kind. The vibe is really chill and it's a great place to study and hang out. I've also met the CEO twice as my uber driver and he was awesome! Overall a very cool place and I can't wait to come back. :)

Abby T.

Yelp
Love this place! I've been here probably around 10 times now in the last 3 months and I will continue to keep coming back! I love trying new things on the menu and the baristas are always super friendly and helpful while I am choosing a drink. Lots of great options on the menu, and they have plenty of milk alternatives as well which I love! The atmosphere is great, the people are kind, and the coffee is fantastic!

Tess H.

Yelp
Blue Owl is without a doubt my go to coffee shop! It's a great place to get work done, have meetings, and grab a delicious of coffee on my way through town. There's also free street parking back in the neighborhoods behind it so that's a plus. Love it, highly recommend!

Melanie S.

Yelp
Let's begin on where is Blue Owl. Forget the Anne St. address. It is visible from MAC in the strip mall between Grand River and the Mariott Hotel. It faces MAC. Anne St, at this juncture, is an unmarked "alley." I had a cappuccino in a ceramic cup. One of the true joys of cappuccino is the froth. Unfortunately, the froth here was substandard. By the time I walked to my table the froth looked like yeast. The coffee cooled quickly and the almond scone served with it was cold from the refrigerator. They did not offer me an option on shots of expresso so it was a milked down large coffee in a ceramic cup. The facility is clean. Warm. There are no sofas to sit and chat. Tables and hard chairs. Easy to clean but not a welcoming place to meet a friend. Better for students who can afford a $7.00 drink and need a table for their hardware. They did offer me the opportunity to tip. I have a difficult time tipping when I self serve.

Margo M.

Yelp
really wanted to love this place, called ahead to see if they made cubano shots, when i arrived they had no clue how. 3 stars because they attempted the drink. almond milk was super burned and had to throw the whole latte out :(
