Maine Restaurant Guide Beyond Portland, From an Industry Pro | Eater Boston

"Drive north to Millinocket, the gateway to Katahdin, and you’ll find the beloved Blue Ox, a true mill-town bar packed with ephemera of past hunting and ski seasons. The menu is straightforward — burgers and hot dogs — and the taps pour local beer, making it a great spot to take a load off after exploring outdoors or running the early-December Millinocket Marathon. Saloons like the Blue Ox are some of the best places to see and interact with locals while enjoying solid pub food and drink." - Briana Volk

This place rocks! Priceless canoes anoint the ceiling and the place has a super fun vibe. We had dinner across the street then stumbled upon this place and had a great time.

This Saloon is a mini museum of all things Maine, a must visit if your from out of town!!! I had my first Maine milkshake ( milk and coffee liqueur) it was delicious 😋 I also ordered food to be delivered from Katadin Gen. Luckily the friendly ox owner had place mats, plates, silver wear, and dressing ( since KGen left out my dressing) The Owner, his dog Jack, and customers were all very welcoming. What a wonderful experience!!

The Blue Ox Saloon, is a cozy small town bar. The bartender and patrons are friendly and willing to chat with people from out of town. The decorations make for an interesting backdrop. It's worth stopping in for a drink when in Millinocket, Maine.

Great little old fashioned bar. Complete with eclectic decor and plenty of stories from the owner and good 🍺 beer.

No food offered or seen anywhere. No drink menu. Bartender who looked like she was 15 had to look up a drink on Google and said she didn't know how to make it and didn't have ingredients for a very common and simple drink. Unless you order a beer, straight up shit then don't bother

Fantastic eclectic little bar. Tom is a classic! Tom's dog will sometimes roam around the bar and nudge you for a pat on the head. Just a cool place.

What a beautiful friendly place that looks after the customer with a friendly smile. Had the Honor to meet "Susan" one of the co-owners of the Blue Ox. The Hospitality of this place is above and beyond any bar or small pub/saloon. The place is a hid-a-way worth the trip to see and worth the time while enjoying the atmosphere.

Yelp
Tom does it right. He'll tell you all about the history about the bar and the building and the area. Definitely worth stopping by.

Yelp
So you are up in Northern Maine looking to hang out at a friendly spot. Consider the Blue ox saloon. It's a friendly spot filled with charm and nice people. Think of The northern great lost bear ( for you southern maine folks). It's an eclectic combination of museum stuff ( they have a real cash register) and neighborhood pub. Bring cash though - they don't take credit cards. I was here during the eclipse and the place was hopping. I don't think it's typically this busy, but on this particular Sunday, it was packed. Nice bar, good hike box music, a pub of a gone by era.

Yelp
Walked in, no other choices for dinner on a Monday night in Millinocket, and felt like I was making a mistake, but decided to stay for a beer. Had the ambience of a place long past it's prime, much like me. Struck up a conversation with the owner/ bartender who is a fascinating, entertaining and accommodating character. He convinced me to order a pizza from down the street and have it delivered to the bar, great idea! He moved to Millinocket from upstate NY twenty years ago and built the bar himself. He explained that Millinocket was the town with the highest per capita income and Budweiser consumption in the 1990's. So much so that the town was visited by the Clydesdales .... then the paper mill closed 12 years ago. Now it's a mixture of hard-on-their-luck locals, and those on there way to and from Baxter State park. Worth the visit just to talk to the owner. If Millinocket had a museum, he would be the curator.

Yelp
Good spot for a beer! Dive bar with an outside fireplace. Pool tables are not level but neither was I ;)

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great prices and atmosphere. Probably my favorite bar in Maine. Most definitely best bar in northern Maine.

Yelp
This place drips character. Atmosphere is very cool, Tom the owner is an incredible source of knowledge. If you are staying in Millinocket, this is the place.... Or do what we did and stop by on your way out of the park and have a beer

Yelp
I've only gotten food from the Blue Ox once. I was working nearby and we decided to get a pizza. The owner was rude and the pizza was not very good. Mostly, the Blue Ox is a bar. Since I don't drink, it's not the sort of place that I'd go to anyhow.
