"When you walk by Otway Bakery on a chilly morning, the heat of freshly baked pastries fog up the windows like they’re trying to keep a secret. Inside, the smell of butter and cardamom hit you instantly. It’s large and airy, but there’s nowhere to sit—every square inch of this place is busy churning out excellent baked goods, like a sticky cardamom bun, and a plain croissant that tastes like it went to Oberlin, started wearing birkenstocks with socks, and became crunchy. If you need a seat (and a plate to catch the crumbs), is down the street, and open for brunch daily. They don’t have all the baked goods, but they do have the greatest hits, including the cardamom bun, which you can pair with a fried chicken sandwich, and a Bloody Mary." - Willa Moore

I wasn’t to happy to go here knowing it’s a bakery. You see I’m a diabetic. My friends suggested it. They are not diabetic so they don’t understand. Gluten free is not going to fix the problem for diabetics. Anyway we go in. As I look at all the desserts I was amazed to see how many varieties they have. Although I can’t eat any of it. Next I notice a list of espresso, coffees, lattes, etc. Now that’s up my alley. I also noticed that they have alternative milk, especially almond milk, which a diabetic can have. I asked the girl if I could see the box for nutrition guide on the almond milk. Wonderful, the almond milk is low carbs! I bought a plain latte with almond milk. Now I’m extremely happy. The price was what I would expect for the latte. I would highly recommend the blue rooster.

Google
Solid 4.5. This bakery has a large variety of baked goods that are all homemade and fresh. We got a cookie that had salted caramel, peanuts and pretzels and was delicious! We also got a cinnamon sugar croissant-like pastry that was very good as well. We also got a Salted Caramel Pretzel Brownie which was okay but not as good as the others.

Google
I have never left here disappointed. I have not bought anything here and been anything other than satisfied. I’ve tried a variety of the cakes, savory pastries, and cookies. The workers are always friendly. They offer gluten free options and will help you with allergies if you ask them. I highly recommend any variety of dessert that is lemon/blueberry—especially the cake.

Google
A nice bakery that a local told me was the best in Oberlin so I decided to go in. There isn't much space to look at everything. Luckily, it was pretty empty so I moved around without having to squeeze passed people. The showcase platters were pretty empty by the time I got there (4pm). Pro is that this means they make stuff daily. Con is that it's in short supply so they run out quickly. No fifth star due to a lack of prices on each item so I didn't know what I was going to pay until I got to the register, the prices were somewhat high, and the treat I got was dry so I feel like I overpayed for a mediocre (if that) piece of food. Presentation was great (treats looked yummy) but the actual flavor was lacking.

Google
Ordered a birthday cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday. All I had to do was send a picture and they did it. Cake looked great too! Extremely reasonable on the price. Great experience!

Google
Seems a very in demand local bakery spot! Wait wasn’t long despite its popularity. Iced coffee had a cool surprise and I ordered French butter cake and it was delicious! Lots of great combination baked goods!! Kind and personable owner!

Google
Passing through on a road trip so happy we found this spot. its an amazing bakery with super sweet staff. gluten free banana bread was awesome but i wish i could have tried everything. and they were even super friendly with our dog too :)

Google
We stopped in after lunch to grab something sweet. They had a great variety of different bake goods. I was unsure going in if it would just be bread and cookies but it was cakes, brownies, etc. We tried a chocolate cupcake with sprinkles which was decent and my kids gobbled up. Then got a sea salt dark chocolate cookie, which was delicious and just the right balance of sweet and salty.

Yelp
I love Blue Rooster, especially French butter buns, muffins, cheesecakes and cookies. I haven't had coffee and buns at the cafe yet but it looks very comfortable inside!

Yelp
Have visited this bakehouse 3-4 times . I picked out 6 cookies this last visit which were fine. 1 chocolate chip, 1 oatmeal, 1 toffee crunch, 1 with pretzels on top, 1 double chocolate, i cookie with peanuts. 4 of these were nothing special size wise or any master creation. 4 bite size. 2 were a little bigger so maybe 5-6 bites. all this came to $19.00; this price was excessive. i will not be returning. I feel like they way overcharged me for what i received. It is not hard to find comparable cookies at a different bakery for 12-14 dollars. Food I give 7 out of 10. Service I give 6 of of 10. Ambiance I give 7 out of 10. rating is 1 star because pricing was ridiculous.

Yelp
Cute place! I have had a few things from here over the years Carmel cookies, various cupcakes, blueberry muffins, whoopie pies, lemonade. All quite good never walked away with a bad taste in my mouth for some items I was surprised at how good they were. Staff are friendly and attentive.

Amanda M.

Yelp
Always a great experience! I have been coming her for years. The place is charming and the people are so nice. There is a seating area in the back with chairs and tables to relax or do work. Always a great selection of baked goods that change with the seasons. They offer a drink selection as well

Annie M.

Yelp
The first thing I noticed when I walked in was that it was awkwardly silent. I later realized that there was a speaker near the cash register very quietly playing music but I highly recommend that they turn it up or add more speakers because it's a weird silent vibe. The space is lovely with a huge variety of beautiful baked goods ranging from cookies to brownies to carrot cake to peach turnovers. I ended up having the German chocolate whoopie pie and loved it. The textures worked together perfectly and the cake portion wasn't too sweet but the inside was sweet with big chunks of coconut and pecans(?). Loved every bite. I also had an iced coffee and theirs is pretty meh. Honestly, I probably won't be back but I did enjoy my mid-day dessert!

Yelp
Fantastic plexiglass separation measures for COVID. Very friendly staff and lots of delicious baked goods. Nary a raisin in sight and the staff agreed raisins don't belong in the oatmeal cookies or carrot cake here which is awesome! The mushroom puff was so deliciously flaky and flavorful- definitely a must-try. Really a gem this place is in little Oberlin. The oatmeal cookie was without raisins which is great. It was sweet, chewy, and deliciously moist. The cornflake cookie was just the right mix of caramel, chewy, crispy, salty, and sweet. The cinnamon sugar donut didn't have the lightly crispy fried outside that makes a donut perfect specimen. It was instead just sort of sweet bread puff that was very unremarkable. The peanut butter cookie sandwich was delightfully nutty and not to sweet (but just enough)! I cannot emphasize enough how perfect their chocolate chip cookie was. It ranks among the top five I've had in my life and that is incredibly impressive. It was ideally sweet yet had notes of bittersweet chocolate. It had a tiny note of salt. It was dense but not too thick- moist but not falling apart. Not crumbly at all. It was just absolutely perfect! I am floored!

Yelp
Just had a near religious experience with a chocolate croissant here today. The coffee is still good. The staff is still very pleasant. A small public restroom in the back is a nice add from the last time I was here. Small sitting room in back gives it a grandma's cottage ambiance. But the star of the show was the chocolate croissant. Not sure how I'm ever going to go back to store bought now. Wish I had taken a picture before I devoured it.

Yelp
An absolute must-go-here if you find yourself in Oberlin, Ohio!! We picked up road trip snacks this morning after I collected my Oberlin College kid and another student for the long trek back to Chicago for Thanksgiving break! We bought $25 worth of treats for the road and 100% were gone by Toledo! We ate everything!!!! Favorites: Pesto croissants (pine-nut free, which is awesome as two of us are allergic to pine nuts), blackberry puff pastry, raspberry jelly donut, custard+fruit flan, and a cheesy-garlic puff pastry. There is a section of gluten-free treats!!! The staff was super, super nice & helpful!! They were patient with us and answered all of our questions. Boxed up the treats. Sooooo pleasant. Everyone was masked and there is a great big plexiglass barrier for Covid safety. Very well done. I will definitely come back every chance I get!! Thank you!!

Yelp
Another good place for baked goods. Blue Rooster Bakehouse is one of the best places in Oberlin. They open early so you can start the morning off with a coffee and pastry. It's not a big place but it has places to sit inside. The pastries are fresh and there's vegan choices too. I popped in early one morning. I needed a coffee and was hungry, and this was one of the few places open. The inside smelled so good, and it made me even hungrier so I definitely needed a pastry. Coffee here is kind of limited but it was still good. The one flavor they had was about $2 for a medium. As for the pastries they turned out to be even better. They had a few vegan selections. One that made my mouth water was the vegan ham and cheese. This one was about $3, but it was large and stuffed. It was sitting in the cooler. The owner asked if I wanted it warmed up, and that was definitely the right thing. It tasted very good with the melted pretend cheese. There were other vegan pastries that day cupcakes and muffins. It was very good for pastries with no dairy or eggs. It's a good place for doing work or just relaxing. They also have free wifi.

Yelp
Stopped in with some friends on a Saturday, and the mood was low and baked goods mediocre. We got a cookie, the key lime bar, and the pretzel brownie. They did have a large selection, but it was hard to see and read what they actually had as signs were small and some were far away and staff was not friendly. There were multiple people working in the small shop, and we were the only customers in yet no one said anything to us until we were ready to pay. Even then, it was minimal interaction with no one seeming like they wanted to be there or wanted us there. The key lime bar was good but nothing special, and the cookie and pretzel brownie were subpar. The brownie was extremely dry and seemed like it was an over cooked box brownie. Coffee options here are extremely limited.

Emily J.

Yelp
Absolutley delicious! I got a vegan peanut butter bite, and the mushroom onion Swiss pastry, but I ate them before I got to take a picture :,) So reasonably priced, so delicious, and the staff are SUPER nice and helpful. Please do yourself a favor and stop in.

Jamie F.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this place, given its overall excellent ratings, but I was disappointed. I got a black drip coffee made from what tasted like old, burnt beans, and it seemed like it had sat around for a while in the urn. Maybe the espresso drinks are better. One would think the baked goods would be the stars of the show at a place with "bakehouse" in the name, but they weren't great either. The feta tomato tart was a little bit stale, and the basil parmesan pesto croissant was too salty. We didn't try the chocolate croissants, but they didn't look the part. They looked more like puff pastry than proper laminated dough. Overall, not terrible, but rather disappointing.

Cara L.

Yelp
A must stop in Oberlin! This small bakehouse really packs a wallop with choices and flavors. For the size of the shop you would have no idea that they would have so many pastries to choose from each day. I can never pick just one or two items and usually end up buying a loaded box of goodies. Some of my favorites have been the chocolate bundt cake, chocolate whoopie pie and slices of any of their cakes!

Heather S.

Yelp
Cutest find! Love the coziness atmosphere of this bakery. My sister and I tried the pesto croissant and brown sugar coffee cake and of course yummy black coffee. Yum!! Hope to come back in the future!

Eugenia V.

Yelp
What a selection! I wanted to take one of everything! The french butter cake and pumpkin pecan donut were amazing. Perfect texture and flavors. And such a nice ambiance and service

Savannah C.

Yelp
I will go out if my way to stop and get a box of goodies. Prices are decent for mom and pop place THIS good in a college town. There is so much variety- you will never leave empty handed!

Kathy M.

Yelp
I went here for the Cupcake Crawl. Unfortunately, when I made it there, there was only 3 left. The main thing the sold was cakes. The flavor I got was carrot cake. I was nervous since there was hardly any icing. It was delicious. There were raisins in the batter. The flavor was just enough, not over powering or sugary. I saw a banana split cake there that looked to die for. So now I wonder how it taste. I will go back to find out. This was my fourth cupcake I tasted and by far the best so far.

Greg E.

Yelp
My wife and I finished checking out the Farmers Market (which was tiny and not worth the trip). I was in the mood for a coffee and a pastry. We had noticed the Blue Rooster on prior visits to Oberlin and so decided to give it a try. We were warmly greeted by, who I believe to be, the husband and wife owners. The place is relatively small. There is a counter top running along the wall on the left, which can accommodate a handful of people and two small tables in the main room. There appeared to be another room toward the back as well. The coffee was very good. I order a cherry turnover, which was OK. The pastry itself was good. However, there was a minimal amount of cherry filling. Also, the prices were a little high.

Beth E.

Yelp
First time visitor and found the bakery displays to be extremely nice. The atmosphere is cute and homey. I wasn't hungry but my husband got a cherry turnover and a cup of decaf. The coffee was freshly brewed with a mixture of beans and he liked it. The turnover was good but he had hoped for more filling. Prices seemed a bit high to me, but to have a business in a small town, you need to go that route.

Julie McKenna S.

Yelp
Darling and charming bake shop. Beautiful presentation with excellent variety. Coffee was fresh and delicious. Muffins very yummy and standard size (don't need the jumbo siZE). Owner is very polite, prompt, and informative. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Lauren C.

Yelp
Very cute bakery with a large selection of delicious baked goods. We stopped in on a Saturday and found a counter with plate after plate of baked goods to choose from. There were also more baked goods available behind the main counter. The employees were also restocking items that were getting low. It was definitely an impressive selection of cupcakes, cookies, bars, turnovers, and cake by the slice. Several of the items offered were gluten free and those items were labeled accordingly. We chose a Chocolate Pecan Toffee Cookie, Lemon Blueberry Bar, and Strawberry Turnover Pastry. The cookie was very good and tasted like it was made from scratch. The chocolate in the cookie had a lovely rich flavor. I thought the lemon bar was pretty good and my dad had the same opinion. My mom really enjoyed the Strawberry Turnover. Don't miss this bakery if you are in the downtown Oberlin area!

Thibault I.

Yelp
Wonderful gluten free and vegan options. Quite addictive, so be careful. Also, the space is so wonderful to work in. Super cozy with warm staff.

Mary S.

Yelp
Excellent pastries! Absolutely love the cakes & atmosphere. Cozy seating throughout. Comfortable & inviting. Has that farm shabby chic vibe. Great coffee too!!!

Gregg T.

Yelp
Nestled in the quaint little college town of Oberlin, you will find one of the cutest and coziest little bakeries. I came across this little shop while participating in the Lorain County Cupcake Crawl http://visitloraincounty.com/cupcake-crawl/, which by the way, is a great way to discover some really cool bakeries, in some really neat locations. Blue Roster is a small little bakery with a nice selection of sweetbreads, pastries, cookies, cakes and of course, cupcakes. In all fairness, I can only comment on the cupcakes since that's all that I tried. I tried their chocolate and it was "good." A little on the dry side, as many chocolate cakes are. The highlight of the experience, however, was just being there. They have a nice little eating area separated from the bakery case in the front of the house, with comfy chairs and fire place. It was a lot of fun to sit there with my girlfriend and her daughter and enjoy our indulgences. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit Blue Rooster Bakehouse, but if you find yourself in Oberlin, I would certainly recommend stopping in for a treat!

Oh, B.

Yelp
I really, really want to love this place. But, I am continually let down. I believe the cakes and cookies are the best thing they do and everything else falls short (either too sweet or under baked). Recently I had a coffee cake that was still wet inside and flour that was not completely incorporated. The "cruffins" are fun but I haven't had one yet that is baked completely. Finding consistency is a struggle here.

Lily W.

Yelp
Love going to this bakery for the vegan savory pastries and cakes. Customer service is always friendly and welcoming. Hannah who works here is awesome and always asks how my day is going :) awesome spot for grabbing a treat on the run or for hanging out to study. I am curious if the bagels are housemade,,, but I know the cakes and pastries are !!

Becky B.

Yelp
Very friendly people, and a very cozy seating area when non-COVID times. Haven't had anything that I didn't like. The loaves of bread to take home are really good too!

Sonja C.

Yelp
Wonderful goodies I have not had a bad experience here. Everything is delicious and they have gluten free and vegan choices too! The brownies I was very happy were bigger than usual, the cookies melt in your mouth. I was very happy with the assortment of delicious goodies they had late in the day. And they have tables and chairs that you can enjoy your goodies. They had good coffee and hot chocolate. A great place to visit!

Adrie G.

Yelp
Definitely come here if you are looking for a cake, pastry, or baked good! They have a plethora of them!!! They have regular or iced coffee and tea bags but no speciality drinks. You can eat inside or outside. Great location to come and walk around Oberlin.

Heather B.

Yelp
From the moment you walk in, the warmth of this place comes at you with delight from the large picture window. We were greeted by the owner, Wendy. Her husband who she bakes with and runs this fabulous Bakehouse, was there as well. My mom got a vegan, a vegan and gluten-free, and a regular baked item. I got a delicious pumpkin cupcake. The cookies and other baked goods looked amazing. I walked to where they had a cutout in the brick which draws you deeper into the Bakehouse and there was this cozy room with seating and a fireplace. I fell in love! I wish we had been there earlier or later as we could have had a coffee and sat there with our treat, but we needed lunch. Wendy told us about a few establishments and the food they served and shared that their breads and desserts could also be found at the Corner Joint. I was sold, and so glad for it because it is AMAZING! If you're in Oberlin, don't miss either of these. If you're not, go NOW! It's such a great college town and we enjoyed the owners and the establishments we stopped into. Everyone was so friendly, kind, and helpful.

Cindy L.

Yelp
Walked in around 7:30 pm. Weren't acknowledged. One person behind the counter deep in conversation with other people. She could have said she would be with us in a moment or something. She said nothing. 3 minutes later, we walk out. Nothing said to even deter that. We were visiting from Columbus. I was born and raised in Oberlin. I won't step foot back in the place.

Lynne C.

Yelp
Their baked goods are way too sugary and over priced. And, the owner is not a very pleasant man. Won't go in there again ...

Nicole F.

Yelp
not peanut allergy friendly :( this is used expected it a bakery but since it's the only one in town i wish i could eat there

Taylor S.

Yelp
Super cute bakery! Has lots of really delicious pastries, I had the cinnamon roll, apple turnover, and a tea and it was all really good! The decor is so cute and has a rustic diy feel with some really nice seating in the back. The service was really nice and everyone was friendly. Highly recommend to anyone looking for breakfast/desert!

Casey C.

Yelp
Unbelievable treats at this bake house Everything is made with the highest quality ingredients The only problem is you can't decide on what ones you want Will be a regular that's for sure You can't get better period

Sarah M.

Yelp
We LOVE this place. Their baguettes are on point, and their ciabatta is delicious too. We usually just grab some bread to go, but they have a great sit down area too to read, study, or hang out. Their desserts look amazing and very tempting! Beautiful cupcakes and cookies and cakes. Highly recommend checking this little bakehouse out!

Asparagus S.

Yelp
Delicious strudel with apple and cheesecake filling. Lovely place to sit, with nice music playing. Prices are good. Nice owners/staff. A gem in Oberlin! We'll be back!

Martin M.

Yelp
Cake and more cake! Try the "Grandma's Porch" (yellow cake with pecans and chocolate chips with chocolate frosting) for a real treat. They have a nice assortment of pretty, tasty gluten free baked goods, too. I would make a special trip to Oberlin to eat here.

Averi C.

Yelp
For someone with a gluten allergy, this place is a godsend. Their cases are always filled with vegan and gluten-free options, and they're really good about making sure cross-contamination is kept to an absolute minimum. My personal favorite are the salted caramel pretzel brownies, but literally nothing is a bad option!! The owners are dolls and everyone who works there is kind and helpful. The best bakery in Oberlin, for sure!

Isabella M.

Yelp
This is a great place. Everything is baked fresh daily on site. The owners are present & invested. The counter staff have always been very knowledgeable and friendly. The ambiance is delightful! I wish they had a variety of cakes w less or no icing. The cake and cupcakes typically have lots of icing which, for me, can detract/overpower from the taste of the baked portion, which is my favorite.

Nellie B.

Yelp
The best tasting gluten free baking I've ever had. Never had an issue with cross-contamination. They're regular baking is also excellent. Great back room.

Kate P.

Yelp
Super cute inside. We have been there twice and the service is fantastic. We had the salted Carmel brownie and the kitchen sink brownie and both were delicious. We can't wait to try the salted Carmel cupcake and lemon curd cheesecake cupcake that we got too. Fat kid paradise.

T G.

Yelp
I was there this morning to pick up some treats for the guys at work. I had the blueberry muffin the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie square and the apple turnover. Its refreshing to see a local business with quality baked goods by a friendly staff. As good as it gets and that's why I love Oberlin not to mention I'm from this area. I love it I will definitely be back!!!!!

De D.

Yelp
Great place - my wife is not a carrot cake fan but I am. I purchased a slice of carrot cake and insisted she try it. After she took a couple of bites I asked her if it was the best carrot cake she ever had, her response "this is the best cake period".

Ibchick L.

Yelp
Stopped in after noticing how cute the sign was and the rooster after lunch across the street with the kids. Super friendly host greeting us! All the treats looked great and the vegan crumble was amazing! I also want to note that my daughter who is allergic to artificial food dyes and quite frankly we just all don't ingest them, saw that the sugar cookies were split ones with sprinkles and ones without! I mean to be able to get my daughter a frosted sugar cookie like normal was heaven! Not sure then intention of the baker was to keep some clean for that reason but this family appreciates it and would love if you consciously did that for some cupcakes/treats so kids like mine who have an allergy can walk into a bake shop and actually be able to have something!

Richard H.

Yelp
Huge fan of the sour dough baguettes and multi grain breads. I personally think they should acquire more breads than sweets. Really friendly fast and reliable service. Glad to have them here. Get your breads before 11 they go fast!!

Tiffany G.

Yelp
Stopped it for the first time thing morning with a craving for something chocolaty and flaky. I have had turn overs and croissants from some of the best bakeries in Cleveland and surrounding areas, and I have to tell you, hands down, The Blue Rooster has THE BEST!!!! I ate one of each on the ride home because they smelled so good. I also grabbed some brownies because I was there and hey why not?! The salted Carmel pretzel brownie is amazing! And since it was in front of me I also picked up a loaf of Asiago Cheese bread, again amazing!! The right balance of flavor in everything I have tried. I know this makes me sound easy to please, but I am anything but. I am very picky when it comes to paying for food. If I can make it better at home , why go out? Not this place, I will be back, you should go to!

Vin T.

Yelp
So many wonderful desserts - each one better than the last. Save your appetite and treat budget for this special nook.

Susan S.

Yelp
Good gingersnap cookie. Very good bread- I've tried a few different ones and plan to make this bakery my go to for bread.
