1st timer at BSD! Zero people/line at 8:30am on a Monday. Friendly workers. I chose 3 kinds of donuts to take home, and a drip coffee.
Notes on the ones I got:
1.) Cointreau Crème Brûlée - my favorite of the 3. The top is hard, like creme brûlée should be, and it's satisfying to crack the donut in half. The custard in the middle is just right, not too sweet, and the donut itself is tender and delicious. I didn't like (and discarded) the Orange liqueur filled squeezie thing, it just made the taste bitter. I'd happily get a box of these next time.
2.) Apple Cider Fritter - so HEAVY. I liked some of the warm spices in there, but didn't really taste cider. It was much better smelling, tasting and texture after I microwaved it for 20 seconds. To be fair, I've never been much of an apple fritter fan, and this one didn't change my mind on that.
3.) Raspberry Rosemary Old-Fashioned - very sweet! The raspberry in the icing comes thru right away, as does a bit of the raspberry tartness. The buttermilk donut underneath was delicious, however, I detected zero rosemary. I found it odd, as rosemary is usually such a pronounced flavor.
My take away: I think my expectations were kind of high. I found out that the donuts aren't made at this store, they're made in a different store and transported to the smaller stores later. I think I was really looking to walk in and have the smell of fresh donuts hit the nostrils, and have the taste of a freshly glazed donut wow my tastebuds. I'll likely return, since this location is within walking distance of my home, but probably just for that creme brûlée confection.
