Blue Sushi absolutely exceeded expectations! Being from Florida, I wasn't planning on going to a sushi place in a landlocked state, but I'd read good things about Blue Sushi and my sushi craving got the best of me. We went without a reservation on a Thursday night and we're seated immediately at a table by the window. Because it wasn't super crowded, the ambiance was pleasant, quiet, and we spent a good part of the night watching and being mesmerized by the fish tank near the front of the restaurant.
Our server Carrie was AMAZING. She was attentive, friendly, and super helpful in helping us decide what to order. Her eloquent descriptions of menu items were spot on and we couldn't help but try them out! They did not disappoint.
We started with the Mango Crab Rangoon and the Crispy Rice. While I didn't taste much mango in the Rangoon, they were nice and crispy and served as a generous portion. Both were delicious, as were the Crispy Brussel Sprouts. The preparation of the brussels is very unique and the sauce they are tossed in is flavorful and not overpowering, highly recommend. They'll turn a Brussel Sprouts hater into a lover! The Shishito Peppers also came highly recommended, but we didn't end up ordering them.
We also sampled some items from the raw bar, namely the Truffle Salmon, Tobiko, and the Black Tuna sashimi. The Black Tuna.... My mouth is still watering days later when I think about it. It's escolar (type of white fish, huge fan myself) cured in squid ink and soy. The cut of sashimi appears white with a black rim. The curing of the escolar added sooooo much flavor to an already hugely flavorful and buttery fish. A must if you're a sashimi lover.
The rolls we sampled were the Amazon Roll and the Green Eggs & Hama. The chimichurri sauce added a unique element to the Amazon Roll, and the garlic ship on top of Green Eggs & Hama was a huge hit. It did make it pretty garlicky, which I loved, but be warned as it can be a pretty potent flavor and is out of the traditional flavor scheme of sushi.
We ended our meal with a sampling of various mochi balls, cut in half so they were perfect to share for two. We got the seasonal flavor (one mixed berry & one Yuzu, whose flavor profile was perfectly described by Carrie), espresso, mango, matcha, & lychee. My favorites were the Yuzu (tangy, refreshing, citrus) and espresso. Perfect top off to an excellent sushi dinner.
I would strongly recommend Blue Sushi for sushi-lovers. The service was excellent, and they have classic Japanese favorites as well as some interesting, less traditional preparations and rolls. I will definitely return the next time I'm in Denver!
