15 Hard Cider Producers Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Blue Toad makes cider at facilities in Virginia and Rochester, New York, using apples from both areas. Among the flavors are the Blue Ridge Blonde and Black Cherry, which share the menu with a rotation of seasonal creations like Harvest Festy. Blue Toad is just a short drive from Bold Rock Cider, making it an easy one-two punch." - Travis Mitchell

Tried the sampler of all 14 ciders and had a great time shopping the merchandise. It's also set on a beautiful site next to a creek. The whole family had a great time!

Beautiful scenery. Friendly customer service, delicious sliders. The star of the show was the BBQ. Super succulent ribs with delicious barbecue sauce. Good jerk, chicken, very, very good mac & cheese. Jeff and Jon are kicking butt with their barbecue!

Enjoyed the view. Minus 4 stars for the rude worker and bad service. Flights are served in plastic cups and a muffin tin. Bar sign is tacky also.

Update in summer 2025: same great place. Drew playing guitar and singing - expert - was a lovely surprise. For more see below... Consistently great. Interesting range of ciders. It was nice having a tasting option, pint pours while hanging out, and 4-can packs to-go, along with a pop-up place (the two days while we were there) selling a shrimp boil plates. Since we were camping at Devils Backbone across the street, this was our go-to daytime venture out, which worked out super-well because our dogs were welcomed to come along. There was live music one of the days. We brought yard games, because there was plenty of space to spread out. Between the chairs and tables, loose chairs, and the picnic tables, there were plenty of spaces to sit for eating, drinking and relaxing. A special treat is checking out the creek in the back; there's a very nice area to swing your legs in the water.

Fantastic place on a beautiful farm to grab some cider and other drinks. It was perfect for a Fall weekend trip. The options change during the year, they have a calendar that is offered month-by-month. The peachy cider we tried was delicious and refreshing. A lot of gift options. This place is more wheelchair friendly than the maze part. Plenty of space and activities for the kids. Open also in the evening/night. There are flushing toilets here, which of course you won't find in the corn maze.

We visited Blue Toad Hard Cider as members of Harvest Host and they welcomed us with open arms. After we setup the RV behind Cider Hall we explored the property and tried a few flights of their hard cider. The food onsite was really good although they were out of some of the options but hey, that's what you get when you show up on a Sunday afternoon. They are generous with their flights of cider so you have plenty to try out as you search for your favorite one. Most of them were really good but there as a few that just didn't tickle our fancy. The property was absolutely gorgeous tucked back in the mountains with views of Winter Green as a backdrop. The fall festival was in full swing so we sat and enjoyed the sounds of kids playing and rolling down the hill in tubes. There was plenty of seating around the property and in the cider hall where they had live music going. Overall this is an awesome place to visit for the day and enjoy some great time with friends and family. Everyone we talked to on the staff was very courteous and welcoming. We look forward to our next visit.

Google
Erica was fantastic!!!! She helped us with what we should get and we ultimately decided on the flight to try it all! This was our first time here, but parents had been here and loved it, so we were looking forward to it! They did not disappoint! Very friendly staff and helpful! They even entertained my dad in listening to his stories!! Haha we come down this way every Memorial Day to see family for the weekend and will absolutely be back to Blue Toad!!!!!

Google
We love to come here during fall 🍁🍂. Their pumpkin patch, corn maze and other activities are so much fun! Dog friendly! Their dry 'into the orchard' cider is unique and very delicious 😋!

Yelp
The cider is amazing!! The new BBQ place they added as food smells heavenly! I have not tried the BBQ but I will next time! I love the indoor outdoor seating! Right at the foothills of the blue ridge mountains as a perfect back drop to freshly chilling cider with live music! Of course the service is wonderful and the people are so friendly! This place is great for families!

Yelp
Loved it! Flight only $13, very yummy innovative flavors! Employees are very kind! Wish they had the nonalcoholic cider for my friend, she didn't want a soda so now she's sitting with us with no drink :(

Yelp
We had been trying to go here for a while, but there are hours are not as late every day, but we were finally able to get there on a Saturday night. The property and the space that they have is really nice, when we went there there wasn't much going on. We ended up getting the largest sampler with 14 samples, these were 5 ounce pours. I was excited to try several of the interesting flavors, but as we went through the flight, we noticed that many of the different siders tasted pretty much the same. I appreciate what they are trying to do with not having super sweet ciders, but the flavor profiles just don't come out. It was also $34 for the 14 pour flight, which wasn't listed anywhere and not really worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful spot! We were disappointed, because we came for the Billievable Cider, and although signs were posted that they had it now, they were very carefree about telling us they didn't have it and to look on the sign out front to see when they would have it (news flash: the sign out front didn't mention the Bills cider). The service was generic, and they weren't that busy- too busy to talk about the Bills cider. Anyways, other than the small hiccup & lack of care for the Bills (#GoBills), we really enjoyed both the BBQ nachos & our ciders with the view! I would return!

Yelp
Yummy. Great location just mins away from bold rock and devils backbone. Please take a second and check out this great little known spot. If you like cider. It's a must stop. Do you self a favor. Try this spot out before bold rock and it could change your mind altogether.

Yelp
Really nice open area both indoors and outdoors. Plenty of parking, great cider and food and friendly staff. They had some live music on Saturday and it was a relaxing environment. We got the flight of 12 and we got the nachos and pretzel to snack on. Great portions for everything. I definitely recommend. We'll be coming back to try the Hot Toadie some time!

Yelp
Husband and I stopped here on a Sunday afternoon during our tour of Nelson 151. We ordered a cider flight (12 ciders) and sat out back by the river. Of the 12 offerings, we ended up choosing 4 as our favorites. Our bartender was knowledgeable and friendly, and the outdoor ambiance is great. Lots of dogs and there is a playground for the kids.
google avatar

Cassie A.

Yelp
Cute place with fantastic views. Service was great ladies were very helpful and welcoming. We did not eat but loved that they had a soup flight! Had a Hot Toadie - warm cider with cinnamon sugar rum. Perfect for a cold mountain day and got a mug to take home. Cool spot check them out!

Yelp
My husband and I were in town for a "ski trip." When it is 60 degrees you cannot ski, so we hiked in the morning and drank our calories in the afternoon. I like cider and we got the 12 ciders on tap. I tried everyone before allowing my husband to have the ones I didn't like. It was very hard for me to choose which ones I liked the least. I liked them all so much! The space was very easy to navigate. The outdoor area was really nice to enjoy the views.
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
We got the tasting flight, which included samples of the 12 ciders on tap. However, it was priced at $30, which we thought was fairly expensive for the amount of cider in each cup (most weren't filled to the top). There was plenty of outdoor seating, and limited indoor seating around the bar. The main taproom, which typically has food, was closed which very was disappointing. The ciders themselves were a hit or miss: some were delicious, and some were very acidic and difficult to drink. The flight was not labeled or explained to us by the bartender, so we had difficulty discerning which drink was which. There were some fun outdoor games such as corn hole and connect four, which were great for our group of 6. The location is also very scenic, and there are lots of other great breweries in the area that make it well worth the trip.

Derek L.

Yelp
Wide selection of cider. Staff is very personable. The fall festival was so much fun. By far the best corn maze we have been too.

Yelp
We came here for the annual Blue Toad race the Saturday after Thanksgiving while visiting friends on Nelson County. Even during Covid they had a hundred or so people but everything was outside and distanced. Food/drinks: We stayed after to try the awesome cider sampler and it was so fun to try a the ciders! The ciders were fantastic- they have a wide range from lightly flavored to light seltzer's and spiced ciders. My current favorite is the "Cider Donut" cider (spiced with hints of vanilla to make it taste like cake!) Atmosphere/Covid: They had plenty of outside seating with fire pits. Lovely, large outside venue with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and creek. Come visit and support your local business!!

Yelp
Tons of cider options on draft- we did a sampler with all 16 to try. Some were not good good at all and some were really good -most however fell in the middle category. When I went there was a live band which made the atmosphere much more fun. Food menu very underwhelming.
google avatar

Jao S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the sampler and got several cans to go, friendly service and relaxed atmosphere

Yelp
This is a good cidery with lots of options that are always changing. Good outdoor space as well. Do not confuse "blue toad" for Blue Toad, the character from New Super Mario Bros. This has nothing to do with that!!! So if you're some sort of Mario fan... this may not be for you, but you should go anyways because the cider is delicious and the staff is friendly. Maybe they'll listen to you talk about Mario.

Yelp
Fun place; it feels like a bar except cider is the only thing on the menu! Todd was my server - he's not only the owner, he's the cider maker, lawn mower man, and all around fix-it guy. He's also a comedian because I was thoroughly entertained during my visit. 8 ciders were on tap, but I only tried 4. Paddy Green - OK; pretty dry but I'd take it if you served it to me Barrel Aged; I forget the actual name but not for me. To be fair, I'm seldom into barrel aged beers or cider, but I was willing to experiment. Winterfest: Amazing! Definitely my favorite of the lineup. Harvestfest: Pretty good But oddly enough the very favorite was a blend of Winterfest and I think Harvestfest. It brought out the best of both of them.

Yelp
Stopped here cause we wanted to try something new. Had never been nor heard of this place. Much smaller than its neighbors, but as my fiancé said this looks like a great place to get married. The lady serving Pints outside was really helpful and informative. She was extremely kind in pointing out where to go. We got the 11 cider flight for like 23 dollars? Not bad considering its 5 oz pours which was easily shareable for the two of us. (See attached) I found 3 of them I really liked and my fiancé liked almost of them so it was definitely worth it. They don't have really any food options, besides what looks like a rotating daily selection, but I'm not going to take off for it. You don't come to a cidery looking for food besides some small bites so I can't complain there. Will definitely be telling our friends about this place.

Yelp
I'm not a cider fan and I ordered the blue raspberry cider and I'd blew me away! Still not a cider fan but I'm a Blue Toad Fan

Yelp
Loved Blue Toad Hard Cider!! I didn't know what to expect. The staff was friendly and accommodating. They answered every question we asked (which were a lot)! The cider was AWESOME! It was very good. They had a huge selection of several types of cider. Even the novice can tell the difference. But, it's all good. I'd definitely stop by if you're in the area. Well worth the trip. Good brew, good people!

Yelp
What a gem! We stumbled upon this place while visiting Nellysford, and whoa I'm so lucky we did. Their ciders were wonderful, and they had so many flavors available. My favorite was the Blue ToadenBerry which was a blueberry cider. But honestly every single cider was delicious. The atmosphere was also bomb. You have gorgeous mountains surrounding you on all sides. Tons of seating available, both inside and out. And there is a great stream running out back of the main building, and you can sit near it while enjoying your drinks. Also, there was a playground on site, so if you have kids, I'm sure they'd enjoy that. Good thing I don't live in this area or I'd be here near every day...

Yelp
Blackberry cider is really delish. Nice location with a lot of seating and great fire pit.

Yelp
3/5 August 2017. We stopped at Blue Toad to start our day of tastings along 151. The cidery is located on a picturesque plot of farm land with good views of the surrounding mountains. There was plenty of indoor and ourdoor seating. The cider was good but not special. The pineapple cider did stand out though. It's a good place enjoy a relaxing glass that's not quite as packed as some of the other places in the area.

Crystal F.

Yelp
My husband and I went here last week and had a great experience! I like cider, but typically don't drink more than one glass because the bubbles are too much for me. The ciders here seemed to be different and I could enjoy more than usual. The ciders here are very drinkable and there are so many flavors. I got the 12 cider flight and enjoyed everything. I liked the blueberry and limeade the most. My husband got the peach bourbon barrel and both of us liked that one. We liked the outdoor space and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Cara M.

Yelp
I'll start this out with stating that I am NOT a cider fan, at all. However, we were staying at Wintergreen and popped in here since it was right there. I split a flight of four ciders with a friend - the paddy green, the light blackberry, the cherry bomb and a peach. There was not much of a difference in flavor profiles for me between the light blackberry and the cherry bomb, and I honestly could not tell them apart. Luckily, my normal gripe with cider is that it's too sweet - these were relatively dry, and although we didn't stay for a round, I could've found something to drink. It was around $11 for the flight of 5 oz pours, which I felt was reasonable. The views are gorgeous and the live music was a nice touch. It's also spread out nicely and has a playground for the littles. I'd go back, but only if someone else wanted to.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely do not take your wife and kids here I guess it's more of a local spot , where the lady's at the bar seem to be friends with the local guys. The language being used is not good I heard Mother F $"@;r more times then I could count My wife actually ask the people to watch the language long enough for us to get our drinks but they kept on and it seems to be totally fine with the associates they did not attempt to support our request at all in fact I felt like they supported the idea of it being a local spot. Funny how the sign posted by the road invites visitors to the area in If you want to fill like an outsider that just invaded someone's space this this is your spot. If your looking for a place to take your wife and young kids Don't Go Here.
google avatar

Thomas D.

Yelp
Two stars because it has a nice outdoor seating area. The cider is not amazing at all. I think they suffer from trying to do too many different things and end up not doing any one very well. And any cider that has added coloring... Generally found the coder to be too much on the sweet side and not very flavorful.

Mary F.

Yelp
Delicious ciders, great views, and super friendly staff! We had a hoppin toad and a peach cider to start and then opted for the flight, because we just wanted to try them all. Also got the pulled pork nachos and they were very tasty! We went on a Saturday that had live music, which made it that much better.
google avatar

Zalenda C.

Yelp
It enjoyed the variety of the ciders. My partner and I shared a large flight. We had a dozen different ciders. They ranged from sweet to dry. I prefer dry, so I approached all the options. Additionally, we had a large hot pretzel that paired well with the ciders. I enjoyed the cider here more than Bold Rock, which is down the road. If you want something less main stream, I would recommend checking out this place. It was worth the visit.
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
Nice place with a good selection of cider. There is an interesting contrast between the inside and outside of Blue Toad. The inside feels kind of like a standard bar and was quite full on the Saturday afternoon we visited. The outside feels more like a winery but with surprisingly comfortable seats. My partner and I shared a reasonably priced flight of their ciders and found several that we really enjoyed. They also have several sets of the game Connect Four inside, so of course we played a few games. I would highly recommend Blue Toad.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Great tasting cider, nice variety of options. Location is on a beautiful scenic property worth checking out.
google avatar

Andres B.

Yelp
Very nice place, beautiful location. The 12 drink cider flight was served in a cupcake tin which was awesome, very reasonably priced too!

Annabell S.

Yelp
This is a cute place if you don't want somewhere too crowded. Its a cute little spot that is nestled in the mountains. Plenty of games and space to run for kids and dogs. They have some very out of the box ciders. They offer a flight so you can try all they have to offer which is cool.
google avatar

Corey W.

Yelp
Theresa is absolutely amazing. The cidery is fantastic. The harvest and tea toad were great. Lots for everyone. Corn hole boards available outdoor seating too. The prices are great also.

Yelp
Absolutely loved visiting Blue Toad Hard Cidery! We went to celebrate me and my friend's birthdays and it was an absolutely gorgeous day. The view of the mountains here is breathtaking and we really enjoyed taking pictures by the creek. Compared to a few of the other breweries/cideries nearby that we drove past first, this one was the least crowded which was perfect for us as we were social distancing due to the pandemic. All of the ambiance aside, the cider here was really tasty. My significant other and I split a flight, as did my friend and her parents. I liked them all but my friends favored the sweeter ciders on the flight. We also ordered a full sized orange flavored cider to split and while I enjoyed it, the orange was incredibly subtle. Would have loved just a tad more! We also thought it was cool that they had Devil's Backbone (another brewery that is down the street) selling food from their limited menu on site. The bartender said they usually have rotating food trucks but due to COVID-19, they partnered with Devil's Backbone until the food trucks are operating again as many shut down temporarily. We tried the nachos and they definitely hit the spot! We also tried the baked beans and cole slaw. The beans were great and the cole slaw was traditional. All-in-all we enjoyed our visit!
google avatar

Valerie G.

Yelp
Cider wasn't the best, I've had better. Very nice environment with fun games. Staff was friendly.
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
What is needed to make this better? Colder cider, more CO2, and a variety of ciders that don't simply add ingredients to flagship cider.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Blue Toad is a great addition to the Nelson 151! It's very small and quaint and in a gorgeous location! The staff is very friendly and welcoming. We had already made a couple of stops that day, so my fiancé and I stopped in and shared a flight of 4 6oz pours of cider. This was a bargain for $10! I loved the blueberry cider the most! It was delicious and refreshing and you could definitely taste the berries in every sip. I also tried the cider that is infused with black tea leaves, which is not only unique, but really tasty! I happened to find the Blue Toad blueberry cider at a restaurant later and ordered a can since I loved the sample so much from my tasting! My fiancé stared with the wintery cider, which had great notes of cinnamon and clove. He also tried their basic apple cider, which was very crisp and nice. We both liked everything we tried! I was also very glad that they didn't currently serve anything hopped. Hopped cider is just gross. We sat at the bar for a few minutes and then moved over to a table to play Connect Four (loved seeing the game at every table!). We were happy to have some time in the ac, but if you wanted to sit outside, they're is a great little patio with tables and chairs. This is a fun stop! I'd definitely be game to come here again next time we are in town.

Yelp
I went to Blue Toad Hard Cider on 8/5/17. It was the first stop in exploring the area. The scenery of this Cidery is beautiful. They also have a private event space on the grounds which is very picturesque. The tasting allows you to try everything they offer and although I thought most of the ciders were average I did end up buying one to take home. They have pineapple cider which I found to be very unique. (I have had a lot different ciders but never blended with pineapple.) The women who gave us the tasting was very pleasant and she did a good job of opening up without ignoring us. We we're her 1st customers of the day. In a nutshell if you're in the area worth a stop for the view alone.
google avatar

Caren B.

Yelp
Meh. We've only stopped in once, after dark, and only for a tasting and to get some to go, so my three star review is really for the cider and nothing else. Which is to say, I feel that the cider's a bit on the meh side. We did a tasting and grabbed some Blonde and some pineapple to go, because we felt that those were the best - but even those were nothing to write home about. We probably won't stop again, because there are so many other cider places that are more interesting. Then again, we have these growlers now...
google avatar

Kara T.

Yelp
This was the perfect cidery. We got a flight for $15 for 8 ciders and they were all wonderful. They have a nice creek out back with picnic tables, we brought our dog and she just loved it here. Would definitely return!
google avatar

Alexa S.

Yelp
If I could give it zero I would, enough time for 3 out of party if 4 to go to the bathroom and come back with out even an acknowledge that I was standing at the bar, not a " hey I'll be right with you" or a " sorry were are really busy just give me a sec" they had two people working which I guess wasn't enough. I was looking forward to coming and hanging out , but I am a big believer in places getting to uppity after being successful and I guess my group just didn't look like they would spend enough $
google avatar

Gretchen G.

Yelp
Still very new, Blue Toad Hard Cider took over the old Wintergreen Winery spot. They have another tasting room not far away but the one on Winery Lane is a whole other thing to behold. Beautiful views of Nelson County's rolling hills, a babbling creek behind the tasting room with plenty of outdoor seating. This is the kind of setting people pay a lot of money to get married in but its a cidery. As I understand it, the New York company is making cider in Virginia now and this is their most recent tasting room. No bottling yet but they do have growlers. Let me recomend that we got a taster of all six flavors, 30 oz so defintely meant to share. We liked each of the flavors. A little more creative than some other cideries in terms of creative flavors and just as good. They are still very new but our server was really friendly and you can't beat the ambiance.

C F.

Yelp
Great place and atmosphere! Wide variety, flavorful and unique ciders! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
An awesome stop to get a cider or four! The gold medal winning Paddy Green was my favorite and I also enjoyed the high octane barrel aged variety. Luckily the last time I was in for a cider, Todd, the owner was working the bar. Anything you need to know about the cider or Nelson County, Todd can tell you. The best thing about Blue Toad is the fact that they use 100% Nelson County apples, no concentrate like Bold Rock uses. You can tell a huge difference in the flavor! Make sure you visit The Blue Toad next time your in the area, YOU CAN'T GO WRONG!
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
We had a ball visiting the new cidery in the state of Virginia. They have another location in the state of New York but this is a very welcome addition right down the street from Wintergreen resort and the Devils backbone brewery. We had the best time the staff was so fun and friendly! A must stop! Delicious ciders!

Lori K.

Yelp
Spent a wonderful afternoon at Blue Toad Hard Cider, the cider was wonderful, met the owner who was so welcoming and the staff was awesome, highly recommend Blue Toad Hard Cider!
google avatar

Alan and Sue F.

Yelp
Very friendly folks and had several ciders we liked. Stopped in and had a flight of 8 ciders. The glasses in the flight are big enough to make 2 pints so they were plenty to share the tasting.

William F.

Yelp
So many different cider options and they're all delicious! Friendly staff, scenic views.

Katie M.

Yelp
The cider is okay, nothing spectacular. This review is more about the staff and how they mishandled a situation. My husband and I, along with our 12 lb dog who was on a leash, went here on Sunday. We have been before but this was the first time we brought the dog. Every other dog there was on a leash except a large hound dog who belongs to the older, obviously drunk couple who very much enjoy their cigarettes. We were seated at the patio area near the entrance and the smoke was overwhelming. We decided to walk over to the creek area. As we made our way in that direction their dog made a beeline to our little dog. We grabbed her off the ground spilling our cider all over both of us. The dog owner shouted, "He ain't gonna hurt you. We've been here all day!" Oddly, that did not make us feel better. My husband went inside to report what happened, telling them they had a liability on their hands and the response was, "Okay". They could not have cared less. Neither the dog owner or employees showed any compassion or caring. Forget being a nice human, this is bad business. This dog also peed on the back of the empty chair at our table and at other various places where people were seated. We could not relax during our short stay there because we had to be on alert regarding the safety of our dog. We have seen that couple there before and got the sense they were quite friendly with, if not the owners, the employees. I would not recommend this place unless you are into roving dogs and disgusting cigarette smoke. I think we will stick to wineries!
