Blue Whale Review - Cow Hollow - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Being showy is in Blue Whale’s DNA. After all, it’s related to Empress By Boon, the majestic Chinatown fine dining restaurant with a $108 tasting menu and a dress code. At Blue Whale, curved royal blue booths beckon you never to leave, the patio is a multi-level destination bigger than the Cow Hollow apartments nearby, and sleek mirrors are backlit like ring lights. Blue Whale has no official dress code, but the dwellers of Union Street show up in slinky tops, tastefully unbuttoned button-downs, and more snakeskin than a reptile exhibit. They’re here to look hot and eat pretty food. While both restaurants share a chef and a sense of style, Blue Whale is billed as the “casual” counterpart to Empress By Boon. They have an a la carte menu of mostly Chinese one-biters, dim sum, and seafood entrées for sharing. But casual doesn’t mean skimp on presentation—there’s a clear effort at play. We can’t remember the last time we saw a papaya salad draped over a pile of crispy-skinned chicken like it’s Moira Rose’s prized wig, or a comical looking whole baked lobster with the head propped up like a cruise ship animal towel. photo credit: Erin Ng photo credit: Erin Ng Though nice to look at, every single dish isn’t a home run. The braised seafood noodles and Malaysian grilled snapper with shrimp paste are pleasant, but not enough to leave you dying to come back. That honor goes to the duck. The rule of thumb: if duck is involved, order it. Those dishes are the best on the menu. The crispy duck salad is zippy with pomelo bits, and the XO noodles crowned with roast duck should be on your table. photo credit: Erin Ng For all this talk about Blue Whale being casual, the high prices cut deep, especially considering the small portions. One order of a passable lobster will run you $88, and the Iberíco ham xiao long bao is $22 for only three pieces. Expect to spend over $75 per person at dinner, including one drink. For less of a blow to your wallet, swing by the gleaming bar for a Chinese five-spice cocktail and pork buns, then be on your way. Blue Whale is Cow Hollow’s poster child for dinners where the food is slightly upstaged by the space, and that’s OK. You’ll still want to roll in for a birthday bash with multiple cocktail rounds, or a date night on one of the most impressive patios in town. Dust off your sexiest little top and be ready to eat a lot of duck, and you’ll have a great time. @infatuation_sf Blue Whale is the more “casual” counterpart to Empress By Boon. By Rose Keep scrolling for the food rundown Food Rundown photo credit: Erin Ng Crispy Duck Salad The antithesis of a boring restaurant salad, and one where half of it is meat. Every bite is packed with lightly fried bits of duck, pomegranate seeds, and crispy lotus root. photo credit: Erin Ng Kurobuta Pork Bun More like dessert than an appetizer, but we’re not complaining. Order these. photo credit: Erin Ng Shanghai Xiao Long Bao—Crab We like these better than the Iberico ham xiao long bao—they’re juicier and have funk and umami from the crab filling. photo credit: Erin Ng Thai-Style Crispy Chicken Finished with a high pile of papaya salad, this entrée is a sleeper hit. The sour-sweet papaya balances out the well-seasoned fried chicken. photo credit: Erin Ng XO Roasted Duck Thin Noodles As mentioned above, order anything with duck for dinner success. These noodles are chewy and bouncy, and topped with roasted slices of skin-on duck we wish there was more of. Braised Seafood Housemade Noodle Borderline bland, despite being covered with a generous helping of prawns and scallops. Skip these. Baked Lobster There are better dishes to spend your money on." - Julia Chen

Google
Anthony brought in the waist on a pair of 3sixteen Selvedge denim jeans for me. They now fit and look great. If you need a denim tailor you can trust with expensive jeans, this is the guy. Thanks again, Anthony.

Isaac Jones

Google
Anthony did such a great job on my jeans, they fit like a glove now. Highly recommend getting your jeans worked on at Blue Whale. Thank you again!

Google
Best denim tailor I have found, and I have used several. Was sending my jeans to the East Coast for alterations but so happy to find a local business that I can visit in person to drop off and pick up instead of having to mail. Does great work hemming and tapering my selvedge denim, even the heavy stuff. Cleanest and straightest stitching of anyone I’ve worked with. Great pricing, fast turnaround, and a super friendly guy. A true craftsman.

Taylor Mcdilda

Google
The jeans turned out fabulous! I took in a few pairs to get the waist taken in QUITE a bit and it was something I was nervous about because I didn’t want the jeans to look as if they had been tailored, I wanted them to look the same as when I walked out of the store. The craftsmanship was flawless. I couldn’t even tell that it wasn’t the original stitching… the fit was perfect. My boyfriend had some off the wall denim he needed shortened in length as well and everything looked the same as when we first bought it. Again, the work looked original from the stores when they were purchased. I will be returning frequently for my denim needs… I HIGHLY recommend this small business if you need any denim worked on….thank you so much Anthony!

Google
As someone with a hip/thigh ratio that has never once been able to fit into a pair of jeans off the rack, Anthony’s work on my jeans is the first time I’ve ever had a pair perfectly fit me. You can’t even tell at all that they were tailored (and I’m extremely picky about this). I’ve never had success tailoring jeans until I went to Anthony!

Google
I'm not a big "reviewer" type of person, but I went here for getting some jeans hemmed and chain stitched and felt obliged to pass along the good word. Super good communication, great work, quicker turn around than quoted as well. If you're spending good money on great denim, take it here to get it worked on. My new chain stitching looks perfect and I'm very happy with the work done. Definitely my go to place now.

Caleb Chesley

Google
I brought in four pair of jeans for chain stitch hemming. The stitching was very clean, and Anthony was able to complete all four in two days. I specified different inseam lengths with a label on each pair, and the new lengths were exactly as requested. I will be returning for my future denim alteration needs.

Haley Hart

Google
Yes! Get your jeans altered here so that they fit exactly the way you want them to! I'm so happy I came here, I brought two pairs of my favorite jeans to be altered and less than a week later (for a great price) they were both fixed and now I have jeans that are custom fit to my body. I couldn't recommend Ferrario Made Good more!

Yelp
Anthony is hands down the best denim tailor I have ever worked with. I've had him do several tapers and hemmings and every time the results have been 100% on point. The chainstitching on the hems is the cleanest and straightest out of all the denim alteration places I've used and pricing is more than fair considering the quality of work. He's within driving distance so I'm glad I found someone local rather than having to mail jeans back and forth. He's a small, one-person operation so support this small business and give him a try for any denim tailoring needs.

Yelp
Fantastic retro shop and an amazing personality Anthony received me on a short notice appointment and did a fantastic job shortening my vintage Japanese denim. Let's support him and his business He even delivered my denim to my car as I was waiting outside. Bravo man

Yelp
What can I say that hasn't been said? Great quality. Nice guy. Fantastic work. Service is top notch. He'll make you fall in love with that 7 year old pair of denim all over again. Thanks Anthony!

Yelp
Anthony is the man. extremely professional quality. I thought I was out of luck when I ordered an expensive pair of selvedge jeans online that didnt fit me at all. most other tailors in the bay area have no idea how to do a proper hemming let alone how to taper from the inseam on a selvedge jean. I brought my jeans to a local dry cleaner first and they just about ruined the inseam. After doing a little research I was able to find Anthonys shop. He got right back to me and after a brief discussion he said he could fix the hem and taper the jeans from the inseam to actually make them fit. I just picked up the jeans today and they look amazing. Anthony did a phenomenal job. If you have any denim that needs work he is the only person I would even consider going to now. Thanks!
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Solid individual to come and get your selvedge things tapered/hemmed. Really accommodating guy and quality effort and results. Will definitely be back for more pants to get done!
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Rested easy that I knew Anthony was handling my jeans. Did a great job and looked great after tapering. You won't be disappointed by the handy work.
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
I have had several pairs of jeans repaired and hemmed and Anthony did a great job. He is friendly and nice to work with. He also has a quick turnaround and reasonable prices.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Great experience. I texted; we made an appointment; I showed up; two days later my jeans were hemmed. $25 for hemming. Anthony was friendly and entirely appropriate. I felt comfortable as a woman changing into the pants behind a screen so we could do the alterations. He wore a mask the whole time. Easiest and fastest alterations experience I've ever had.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Setting up an appointment was really easy through the website. Anthony was quick to respond and was able to answer all of my questions for my hemming. I just had two jeans needing a hem and his turnaround was really quick. The jeans came out well and I'll happily choose him again for any future pairs I may be bringing in.

Yelp
I drove an hour and a half to get two pairs of selvedge jeans hemmed and it was WORTH IT. Anthony does awesome work.

Ariq M.

Yelp
Incredibly talented and precise tailor. He is super professional as well as kind while being in the top of the top of tailoring in terms of his skills. He is a reasonably priced tailor and offers quality chain stitching!

Lisa W.

Yelp
Stellar! 5 star! Stupendous! I can't believe I didn't know about Anthony and Blue Whale sooner. Brought my two pairs of summer jeans in that have gotten holes in them from being in constant rotation. It was time to fix them. Anthony was up front that the holes were big (they were) and that he can def patch them up, but won't look seamless. He did a great job and I can't wait to tell friends if and when they need jeans repaired! FYI: I repaired two pairs of women's jeans: one Levi's and one madewell.
google avatar

Chantel S.

Yelp
I've been going to Anthony for 3-4 years now. People think it's strange that I have a tailor specific to denim. Being how I'm a short stature woman, finding well fitted jeans has always been challenging. I started investing in raw denim, get fitted by Anthony, and bring my jeans for repair to this man. He's the only one I trust and the quality of work is great! The above jeans is my first raw denim pair that Anthony tapered and hemmed. About 1.5-2 years later, the button hole ripped and needed reinforcing. The stitching is subtle and sturdy, feels thicker than when I first bought the pair. I also had him do a secondary reinforcement for the back belt loop. The best part to owning raw denim is how uniquely yours they are. I love how Anthony puts his flare into his repairs as well. It adds another level of character. Responsive quality service. What more can your ask for?
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
Fantastic! My jeans are as good as new. Great location and friendly. Totally recommend.

Jonah N.

Yelp
If you're looking to have a pair of jeans altered this is the place to go. Anthony does excellent work and is easy to work with. Setting up a time was convenient and he was able to answer all of my questions. My jeans were ready in a few days and the stitching looks amazing.

Keenan C.

Yelp
Reasonably priced, quick turn around time, and new hem on my jeans + jacket looked great- would recommend!

Yelp
I finally had the opportunity to drop by over the weekend to drop off my raw denim. A pair of left field's for repairs and samurai's for hem&taper. I purchased my pair of left field's from two jacks denim back in 2014 which got tailored by none other than this man coincidentally. I had gotten my jeans repaired once already through self-edge who also happen to send some of their jean repairs to Anthony for a fix. Anthony was able to instantly able to recognize his own hem+taper work on this particular pair of denim and recognize that the first repair was not done through him... impressive to say the least. The man has past experience working at Levi's... and now works in his own denim workshop... It's almost as if he eats, sleeps, and breathes denim. This is the person I want working on my beloved jeans, someone who understands the impact of owning a goddamn great pair of jeans. Practically my second skin to my bottom half. I ended up paying $25 for each tear/hole in my jeans subtotaling to $75, an additional $50 to hem+taper my brand new samurai denim, and $10 for shipping+tracking for a grand total of $135. A small price to pay in my eyes, yet a fair price! One of my buddies just told me about a taper job he got done elsewhere that cost him $75 to get done?! Eh? Pass. I plan to post before/after shots of my repair+fit for the curious ones. Stay tuned.

Yelp
As bigger guy it's hard to fine jeans that really fit and look the way the should. After exhausting search I had a few jeans that fit okay but need some work. A friend of mine recommended Anthony with out question. I dropped off my pairs of jeans spent about 20 minutes with him talking fit and Letting him take my Measurements. Came back a week later in the pants fit perfect!! This is my guy from now on
google avatar

Francis Rodson C.

Yelp
My go-to every time I need alterations to denim. He's dope.

Will L.

Yelp
I don't really post many reviews but feel like I should let everyone know the good work Anthony does. He has done some quality work on my precious Japanese denim. Including excellent taper work on my iron heart and samurai jeans. He has also shortened the sleeves on two of my momotaro jackets, which were not an easy thing to do. All quality work done by him with reasonable pricing and quick turnaround time of about a week or so. I will be hitting him up for future alterations and repairs as he is one of the few in this area that understands how to work on Japanese denim.
google avatar

Jacques B.

Yelp
The quality of service and attention to detail at Ferrario are unmatched. Couldn't be happier with the tailoring of my selvedge jeans. The hem that he stitched on the cuff looks better than the original.
google avatar

Yelp
Huge thank you to Anthony! I bought a pair of 17oz denim from the Self Edge website back in November 2017. Everything was great except the fit was a bit wider than I had liked. Because of the fit, I didn't wear it much and also considered selling. The thought of getting the jeans tapered occurred many times, but I had no idea who in the Bay Area was capable of doing so without touching the selvedge line. Then I found Ferrario Made Goods. Fast forward the this past weekend, I dropped my jeans off on Sunday July 15 and they were ready by Tuesday July 17, although Anthony had suggested they would be done by Thursday. Crazy fast turn around time! I had the jeans hemmed by 2 inches and the leg opening tapered from 7.25 to 7. The jeans came back perfect and I can't wait to start wearing them on a daily basis going forward. Be sure to email Anthony to set up an appointment before hand!
google avatar

Jerry Y.

Yelp
Super fast turnover on my denim repair. I've been burned in the past by others with an ongoing 6-month turnover... Glad to find Anthony who is local and does fantastic work at a breakneck speed. Cash only and reservations through texting is very convenient. Will be coming back for more when my other pairs blow out.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Had a really nice pair of jeans (UBi IND) that got a hole from too much use. UBi recommended coming to Anthony and he was down the street from me so I gave him a shot. Send a text and he said to come on over. Shop was a little hard to find, definitely call him when you get there so he can let you in as he is behind a large gate. Anthony took the jeans and got them back to me the next day, they look great and it's some seriously quality work. Would gladly be bringing back the rest of my jeans if they ever need any repairs.

Mark B.

Yelp
If you need your raw denim to be worked on. This is the guy to go to. I had him repair a couple of my jeans already. Quick turn around time and responds quick!

Victor C.

Yelp
Anthony is my best find of 2021 thus far! He hemmed or tapered about a dozen pairs of jeans for me over the past few months, each time doing a fantastic job. Using denim-specific machinery makes all the difference, and thanks to his great attention to details and impeccable craft, the results have been perfect. Add the fact that he is so easy to communicate with, and I wouldn't consider bringing my denim anywhere else for alteration/repairs.
google avatar

Lauryn L.

Yelp
I've brought him the same pair of jeans twice to fix and he did amazing. The stitching matches perfectly and the turnaround was quick! Prices are definitely reasonable. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Calon L.

Yelp
I have a pair of Gustins that I didn't really love the fit on, so I took them to Anthony and had him do a taper. It took about a week or so to complete, but the results were fantastic! Anthony has about 100 different sewing machines that he uses for specialized purposes. The jeans I had him taper were raw, selvedge denim and he was able to maintain the selvedge ID and run a really nice taper from the knee down. You honestly couldn't tell that these had been altered. As of this review Anthony is only in the shop Tuesday, Thursday, and Sundays, so it's best to message before hand and request a quote, but the workmanship is worth it!
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
Anthony is a master craftsman and does amazing work. I brought in a pair of 3sixteen SL120x (shadow selvedge) that I needed hemmed. He was able to do it within an hour and I pickup it up after grabbing some tacos down the street. After about a few days of wear, i decided I wanted them tapered and Anthony was able to accommodate my request. He estimated one week but was able to finish them sooner than expected. 5/5 stars, thanks anthony, I'll be back again soon.
google avatar

Davinah S.

Yelp
My denim that I picked up in Canada earlier this year got holes in them from all of the love and wear that I give them. I found Anthony on yelp and sent him an e-mail. He responded very fast and I was on my way to bring my jeans to him the next day. He had them fixed and ready to go in 3 days. Don't just drop by! The shop is hard to find, but call when you get there for your appointment and he can guide you in. I'd definitely go back and recommend him to all of my friends! Something to note: he takes cash only.
google avatar

Raheem R.

Yelp
Just order a nice pair of raw denim jeans made locally in SF by OneCulture at houseofoneculture.com. They happen to be a little too long and it was not a chance in Hell was I gonna take a pair of raw denim jeans to the local chinese dry cleaners so they can butcher them up. All I need is a simple heem job and fix a blow out on another old pair of jeans. Believe it or not, he completed the job in one day!!! Prices are fair and I was more than happy with his work ...Quick, fast, professional, and friendly guy.

Nick N.

Yelp
Anthony is a time machine for jeans (I specifically asked for only the seat repair).
google avatar

Neil C.

Yelp
Best denim repair I've seen. He fixed my treasured vintage jean jacket with an amazing technique that looks great and is strong

Karen J.

Yelp
Anthony Ferrario is the real deal. I'm 5'2" and frequently need pants shortened. I brought in three pairs of jeans to hem on a Sunday afternoon, and they were ready by Tuesday. He is also able to do the chain stitch at the bottom, which creates that hem that's so familiar on jeans. He's the first tailor I've found who can do that. It was $20 a pair (because of the chain stitch) and totally worth it for the quality. I'll definitely be a returning customer. He's super responsive via text, and there's always been ample street parking whenever I've visited. Plus, there's a very sweet kitty just begging for your attention inside his shop.
google avatar

C. B. Z.

Yelp
Came by the place so I could support a business close to home. The person was not there even though it's within hours of operation. There is no sign for the store, I just wandered around looking for information and found someone who says he's not there. Called twice no answer. Waste of my time. Very unfortunate. I was hoping to find a great tailor close to home. Hope this is helpful for someone else. Call first, don't just stop by.
google avatar

Sean J.

Yelp
I brought Anthony a pair of 3sixteens I just bought to get tapered. I left him a pair of old jeans which I loved the fit on and was told it would take about a week. Three days later I got a text that they were done and when I picked them up, got home and tried them on they were a perfect fit! The stitching is beautiful and you can't tell that they have been altered, I'm really happy with his work!

K M.

Yelp
I got many pairs of various selvedge jeans hemmed by Anthony. Highly recommended. Quick response and good communication. Quality work. Flexible. Reasonable turn around time. Go see him for chainstitching. I will be a repeat customer.
google avatar

L K.

Yelp
Anthony is the best! I've been going to him for years for any/all my denim alterations/repairs. As a women, finding raw denim (let alone any pants) that fits like a glove is hard, am I right?! Never an issue anymore. Anthony's knowledge of how denim should fit on the body is beyond amazing. He does hems, tapering, and.... Hot tip ladies! He takes in waists!! It has changed my life. My pants fit in all the right places and I couldn't be more impressed with the quality of craftsmanship that goes into every stitch. Highly recommend!

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Before this, I had no idea you could repair jeans. Anthony did an amazing job, and I will definitely bring my favorite pair back here when they need repairs! You can't tell at all that they've been patched :)

Wayne T.

Yelp
Brought 2 pairs of jeans for tapering. Anthony did an amazing job and turned it around in short order. He tapered the jeans to my exact specifications and also chain stitched the hems. He definitely knows his stuff. Price was very fair. Quality of work was outstanding. Super responsive via email and text message. Will be bringing all my jeans that need work to him going forward. Remember to make an appointment in advance and check which days he is open.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
Amazing spot - Anthony rules and does a fantastic job. Tapered my raw denim jeans to perfection. Best dude, backed hard.

Marcus A.

Yelp
Brought Anthony 8 or 9 pairs of denim to chainstitch hem and a couple to taper as well! His prices were reasonable, his work was impeccable & turnaround time in a few days!! Oh & he's a cool dude!

Wayne B.

Yelp
Trusting your denim to just anyone doesn't come easy. For those of us that invest, collect and love our denim, Anthony is the man to trust for repairs and alterations. He has all the right machines and experience to make it happen. From chain-stitching, tapering, repairing blowouts to worn out elbows, he kills it. Great to have a local option and avoid the long lines/markups at some of the nearby shops. Great work and fast turnaround!

Elena L.

Yelp
Anthony is great! I was looking for someone in the East Bay that could do more complex hemming. Specifically, I was looking to do a reinforced cut off hem on a pair of citizens. Anthony did a perfect straight cut and then darned above the hem to control the fray. You cannot even see the darning! Many months later they are a perfect fray and have not continued to unravel.

Mark L.

Yelp
I've had two pairs of jeans - Rogue Territory (purchased at Two Jacks Denim in Oakland) and Baldwin - hemmed to length by Andrew. His work is top notch, and he's clearly a master a what he does. I'll be coming back anytime I need any alterations.
