BlueBlood steakhouse is situated on a gorgeous gothic revival castle, with beautiful views of Toronto. We dined on the patio, which is appointed exquisitely. But you already knew that.
The food is unfortunately where the devil lives. We had a unique dining experience - and not in a good way.
Things started well.
We had the market oysters and beef tartare in bone marrow to start. The oysters were fresh and was served with two nice sauces: uzu lemon, and bacon vinegar. Both were tasty.
The beef tartare was fresh and tender, but lacked seasoning. I would've liked to see some bolder flavours, and some citrus would have really helped to cut through the richness of the beef, especially since it's served with a duck-fat cooked biscuit. Verdict on the tartare: not much to write home about.
Nonetheless, things were going fine for our meal.
Then our steak arrived. We had the 16oz Ribeye steak ($110) cut which we requested to be cooked Midrare.
The steak arrived clearly over cooked - just from the touch, you could tell it was over. Slicing inside, there was a thick grey band, half of the steak was approaching well done, and the other half was medium, at best. How they managed to cook the steak so unevenly, I'll never know.
Nonetheless, our waiter immediately spotted we weren't quite happy and asked if there was a problem. Not wanted to cause a scene, I explained the steak wasn't done to my liking. The waiter immediately agreed that it looked over cooked and promptly took it away. What happened next surprised me: the waiter immediately returned with the steak they had just taken away and explained that the chef said the steak was cooked to midrare.
They then said to use my flashlight (keep in mind, this is 6:30 on a sunny evening) to see the 'redness'. In broad daylight, using a flashlight - What?
I thought it was a joke at first. Redness or no redness, you could tell just from one bite, that all the goodness was cooked out of the steak.
The waiter, sensing things were now going very poorly, lobbied the manager for a re-fire. I explained that it wouldn't be necessary for a re-fire as I wouldn't be able to finish (I hate wasting food), but they re-fired a new steak anyhow, which was a nice gesture.
And everyone lived happily ever after!
Nope - the refired steak came out teetering on Blue (maybe that's why it's called BlueBlood?).
I had 2 bites of the steak and couldn't go any further - no body (well, certainly not me) eats 2 inch thick steak, Blue.
We couldn't finish either of the steaks we were served and decided to pack them.
I've taken photos of the steaks that we leftover so you can make your own conclusions.
Steak aside, the sides were tasty - we had the broccolini was well cooked, and the duck fat hand cut fries. The fries were VERY thick - but I like a fluffy fry when cooked right, and these fries were tasty.
Unfortunately, the steak ordeal put a very sour note on the evening, after all, it is a steakhouse, and we skipped out on dessert.
Overall, I think you can get much better food for $200 per person elsewhere.
