BnA Alter Museum | Best places to stay in Kyoto

"If you’ve ever had an urge to spend the night in a gallery, this ultra-hip boutique hotel several blocks south of busy Shijo-dori can scratch that itch. A self-proclaimed ‘art hotel’, created by Tokyo-based contemporary art collective BnA, the 31 rooms here are all different – some pop-arty, others abstract, many hard to pin down with a single label. The vibe continues beyond the rooms, with communal areas in the 10-story building functioning as a vertical gallery. Not surprisingly, the laidback bar here has become something of an artist’s hangout – a good place to plug into Kyoto’s creative scene. And as well as immersing yourself in art by staying here, you’d be supporting the arts too – the artists receive a slice of the revenue from every stay in the rooms they created. BnA in Kyoto is about a five-minute walk to Gion and just south of Kawaramachi, which is good for bars and restaurants. Kanra is about 7-8 mins north of Kyoto Station, which gives fairly decent train/bus access to all sorts of places, though the immediate surrounding area itself isn’t the most exciting. We enjoyed a wonderful stay at BnA Alter Museum—from the fantastic location by Gion to the spacious rooms and beautiful bathroom, it was a very enjoyable experience! There is enough room to comfortably open up your luggage and still have ample space to move around. The art rooms are all very unique and a fantastic experience of their own. There’s also great coffee in their in-house BnA Coffee Base on level 2. Although we only stayed for two nights, we all would have been happy to stay even longer and will certainly return when we’re back in Kyoto. Highly recommend BnA Alter Museum if you are coming to Kyoto! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a fabulous place to stay! Rooms curated by local artists make for a most unique and interesting stay in the city of Kyoto! Best part, portion of your hotel fee goes to the artist! Service is impeccabl!. Staff are very helpful, kind and friendly. On the 2nd level you will find the lounge where you can have fantastic breakfast choices with a plethora of drinks including various coffee choices. If you stay here, be sure to join the museum room tour. One of the hotel staff members will give you a guided tour of rooms not occupied by guests. BnA Alter Museum is roughly 15-20 minutes walk to various local attractions and train stations. I suggest walking the nearby alleyways just behind the hotel for coffeehouses, restaurants and other shops.

This was the perfect choice for Kyoto. Starting off with the best location - close to Gion, Nishki market and the river makes it so easy to tour the city. What makes it extra special is the boutique and personal atmosphere- the staff remember the guests and their personal requests and go out of their way to help. From explaining directions, to arranging luggage services and more - they are the best. The rooms are spacious and the bathroom is great. This is an art hotel so art comes before comfort sometimes which makes sense. Mostly no real storage space in the rooms, we didn’t have any full body mirror and such. Things that are normal on boutique hotels. But overall the room is great. Would definitely stay again. The hotel has a coffee shop that opens at 08:00 serving coffee, matcha and also breakfast. Coffee is great but note this is slow service so don’t find you are in a rush. Will definitely return on my next visit to Kyoto.

Staying at BnA Alter Museum was a fantastic experience. We stayed in two different rooms, which not only offered luxurious accommodation (including an aromatic bath!) but also fantastic experience of art. This really is simultaneously a museum and hotel, and we greatly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the concept. The location is incredible (very close to Pontocho Alley, Higashiyama, and Gion). I highly recommend and would return.

We have loved being at this hotel, it is very clean and nice. The rooms are their own art exhibits and it just makes the stay so cool. Our room is just so cute and the view of the city is beautiful. I would love to stay here again if we are in Kyoto. Also the cafe is so good: I enjoyed the cheesecake, plus the art exhibits are fun to see.

Such a unique experience to be able to stay "in" an artwork! We were in the Mon Koutaro Ooyama room (#601) and it was amazing! The colours, artwork and integrated lighting programme all combined perfectly to create a really immersive experience as part of the art. We enjoyed staring at the intricacies of the paintwork and exploring the detail throughout our stay. In addition to this - the beds were super comfortable, bathroom well equipped, staff very hospitable, breakfast tasty, and the location is excellent - easy to access via a short bus ride from Kyoto station and simple to then get to the main attractions (Arashiyama, Pontocho Alley, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kinkakuji temple etc). Staff have great recommendations for local places to eat and explore too. Would highly recommend staying here - it is a truly unique experience.

Hands down best hotel I've ever stayed at. We stayed in "Traveling Room" which has curated soundscapes set in a red velvet draped room and an enormous plush king sized bed. The room was both comfortable and beautiful and the bathroom was enormous with both a shower and deep bath tub. The service went above and beyond each time we inquired for anything, the food in the cafe was spectacular and getting to enter and leave through an art museum was a joy. Can't recommend the bna alter enough, it is the only hotel I'd stay at if I return to Kyoto.

I absolutely loved staying at BnA Alter Museum! We had one of the art rooms, which was a whole mural, light, and sound experience. Each of the art rooms comes with information about the artist, which was great to know. The staff was very friendly and helpful and never left us wanting for anything. We stayed a total of 3 nights and added on breakfast. We had a choice of a few different breakfast options which were all filling and delicious. We even upgraded our drinks one morning to the black latte, which had a sweet jelly in it - so good! The location is close to several bus stops and restaurants and just a short distance from downtown, so it was very convenient to get around. I would 100% recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a fun and unique experience.
