6 Ways to Try a True Florida Rum Runner, From Islamorada to Key West

"At Boat Drinks Bar in St. Augustine I recount Rob Crabtree’s long search for a Rum Runner he liked: after more than 20 recipe iterations he landed on a carefully layered cocktail built (not shaken) with a base of unaged and dark rums, French blackberry liqueur, banana liqueur, and a precise juice ratio of two parts pineapple to one part orange; he builds it gently because blackberry liqueur can turn muddy and shaking kills the brightness, and Whitney Hobbs stresses that using high-quality liqueurs makes the drink sing." - Carrie Honaker

Best Restaurants Around the South Recommended by Atlanta Chefs and Bartenders | Eater Atlanta

"This nautical, “super fun and kitschy” raw bar in historic downtown St. Augustine gets the stamp of approval from Miles Macquarrie, beverage director for Kimball House and Watchman’s Seafood and Spirits. “They have all sorts of like frozen mojitos, Miami vices, and [it’s] just a super fun kind of Florida cocktail bar,” he says." - Kris Martins

Google
Fantastic food and specialty drinks. We visited as part of our trip to St. Augustine' s, Night of Lights. Boat Drinks is a bit off the beaten path, but we'll worth going to. Fantastic service, (shout out to Alex). Char-broiled oysters were delicious. The sauce was exquisite. Peppered Shrimp and Datil Shrimp Sliders were winners.

Google
The waiters/ waitresses here are literally the best. The service and atmosphere are top notch- something you don’t experience every time you go out. The two seasonal drinks I ordered where so yummy!!!!

Google
Got the chance to stop in for lunch after wanting to go after they moved to their new location. It is awesome! Great vibe inside, they say it on the sign, but it’s a bar, not a restaurant! Definitely more adult friendly overall. However, food was great, and so was their selection of drinks. We ordered the Datil shrimp sliders and chicken skewers, both were fantastic! Service was great, everyone was super polite and informative. Highly recommend, will be back again soon!

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Boat Drinks is truly a local, family-owned gem and a must-visit for oyster lovers! I thoroughly enjoyed their trio of mixed oysters—Mookie Moto, Queens Cup, and Fire Lake—all fresh, briny, and bursting with flavor. Each was perfectly shucked and served on the half shell with an excellent vinegar-based mignonette and a well-balanced cocktail sauce with just the right kick of horseradish. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service is attentive without being rushed, and you can tell every detail is handled with care. A fantastic spot to savor top-quality oysters in St. Augustine!

Google
Drove by and the building caught our eye as being just our style; then we saw the rum menu and the rad food menu and did an immediate u-turn to try it. We would kill to have this in Miami where we live; there’s NOTHING this cool there. 10 stars for the no kids policy. 10 stars for the service, I want to be friends with the staff forever. 10 stars for the music.🔥

Google
What can I say except boat drinks is fabulous. It’s always consistent- fun atmosphere, friendly service, delicious fresh food and yummy drinks. My son loves the cheeseburger, and you can’t go wrong with the fish dip, chips and dip (it’s a fun lighter play on the original), peppered shrimp and bread, peel and eat shrimp, and datil pepper sliders. Seriously get it all! They don’t take reservations but we’ve never waited. So fun and yummy! We visit every time. It’s truly the best. A must go!

Google
Great Vibes, Service, Food, and last but not least Drinks. The best Piña Colada EVER. Loved it so much we visited three times during our St Augustine annual trip. Can’t wait to go back.

Sara L.

Google
The food here is definitely a step up from your average bar, despite what the sign says (this is a bar, not a restaurant), it is very much a bar with restaurant quality food. While a puppy event outside might suggest a family-friendly atmosphere, it's not truly designed for families. Be warned about the overpriced cocktails, which are mostly ice; your money is much better spent on a bottled beer (there is no draft beer) so you actually know how much alcohol you're getting. Interestingly, they do offer wine on draft.

Yelp
Forever my favorite spot in the whole wide world for cocktails. We visit St. Augustine 1-2 times per year and I have no shame in planning my entire trip around their hours so that I can swing in for that unforgettable espresso martini. The vibe is fun. The beer list is stellar. The food is fantastic. It is a perfect spot for small bites, great conversation and fantastic drinks. Get the charbroiled oysters and datil shrimp sliders if they are on the menu. The new location is great and I really enjoy sitting at their outdoor bar. Bartenders are friendly and you really just can't beat this ambiance when you are looking for a chill place to stop in while enjoying this gorgeous destination.

Yelp
Boat drinks is THE BEST cocktail spot in all of st aug. The original location was in the heart of downtown st aug, and had lots of foot traffic, but this new location is seriously bigger and better! Went the day before Night of Lights had officially begun and WOW the holiday decor was floor to ceiling. Loved all the details. Tons of attentive bartenders who each clearly knew all the craft cocktails on their menu. My absolutely fav drink is the S.S. Presso - an espresso martini with a rum base and cream float. It's the perfect adult drink in my mind. I love that Boat Drinks is now in a easier location to visit if you wish to avoid the downtown madness. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Went to the new location of Boat Drinks. Very open and has lots of parking. Great for locals now. We had a few drinks and the chargrilled oysters. The expresso martini and the oysters were vey good.

Yelp
Was in town visiting my bff in St Augustine and I found Boat Drinks for some amazing food and specialty drinks on our way home from beach! Staff working the bar were all so nice and manager was so knowledgeable about food and drinks! We ordered off Happy Hour menu and regular menu. Crispy fish bites, shrimp and I forgot everything else ordered but it was all good! Oh and specialty drinks were phenomenal!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow on business owner response and rudeness. 1- I did try the menu drinks- via friends- and as aligned with them, they were sweet. The bartender actually said she liked most of the drinks as she was a fan of drinks on the sweeter side. 2- No one said they closed at 10. And as we left after 10, they were taking new customers. As mentioned, I said it could be an off night. 3- No we didn't try the food, and actually the bartender mentioned many coming for after drinks, you know, with a place called Boat Drinks, you would think this may be an area of specialty. 4- Thanks for the rude response, shows there is some history here and a lack of willingness to take feedback. Good luck. Not great. Not great. Inside vibe, ok. Friendly staff, but empty and could be the timing, but zero energy on a Friday night at 9:30. To be fair, didn't try the food. Drink menu was full of sweet drinks, picked off the menu and had a good French 75.

Yelp
I misjudged this place, thinking it was a restaurant and bar. It's more of a bar with a very few pricy food options; pricy, even for a tourist town. We had a tasty fish sandwich at $25 and the fish bites for $18. I passed on the dozen raw oysters at $36. The happy hour was a different experience for me as the waitress only offered a beer that came with a shot. I wish she had just told me a can of beer is $6 (no draft beer) and the happy hour is a $4 shot. but that wasn't the case. I'm a frequent local diner and a generous tipper that is looking for a better value.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! Had so much fun watching people walk by from the upstairs balcony and the S S Presso made with rum was AMAZING!!!! The servers in the upstairs bar were very fast on a Saturday afternoon. Decore is great! The upstairs photos are even at an angle like your on a boat! Highly recommend!

Yelp
OK, this was an amazing stop. We happen upon this little gem while looking for a place to grab a drink. The weather wasn't great so we were looking for a place with good ambience inside and we found that and so much more. The service was the best I've ever had at a place that primarily does. Our waiter was friendly, helpful, and really went above and beyond to help us find what we were looking for. The way it's decorated is right on point. I definitely felt like we were in a cute town, but not overdone. The drinks, oh my gosh, they were excellent, each one of them. We had originally stopped for one, but stayed for three. This is a must visit for anyone in the area whether you're looking for a snack or a drink !

Yelp
We arrived on a Sunday near closing time. Thankfully, right before their kitchen closed! There were two people in our party and one got the double burger with the black eye peas and the other got the Cobb salad with jerk chicken. The food is really good. Cheeseburger was cooked well and the black eye peas had good flavor. Salad was great! Loved the spice on the jerk chicken! Would certInly order it again! They have a huge selection of rum and the gentlemen behind the bar were very knowledgable about the different ones and shared his favorites while we were there. A classic rum and coke was perfect!

Yelp
Dropped in after being highly recommended by a bartender at one of favorite St.Augustine hangouts. We were not disappointed. Upon entry, we were greeted with a very lively atmosphere. Due to the construction style of the building, it was quite loud on the inside, but not in a negative sense. Drinks were very good, but what started off as a plan for dinner wound up being drinks and their outrageously good spin on chips and dips. Absolutely delicious. It was a great experience and we're looking forward to going back.

Yelp
I was searching thru Yelp for something different to eat (different for me) something not too large not too heavy (it's 90 degrees here and lots of walking) just a nice note and a frosty beverage. Boat Drinks delivered on both of my requirements. I have only had oysters twice in my life and the menu here boasts them charbroiled, which was new to me. They were delivered to me at the bar swimming in a delicious spicy broth reminiscent of a beefy pho and some toasty pita style triangles for dipping. Absolutely stunning dish. Frosty Bevvie was the Miami Vice it was cold it was sweet it wasn't overly strong. Guys behind the bar were cool, I could tell they would engage if you wanted to but not pushy at all. The couple next me seemed to be in love with one of them they found him HILARIOUS. 10/10 recommend.

Cyndee K.

Yelp
We were looking for appetizers with our drinks, they only had plantains. Service was fine but the decor was a little cold and bare.
google avatar

Yelp
Just WOW! In terms of service/ staffing they really hit it out of the park! Me and my partner stopped in for lunch and we ordered the salad and the burger with cowboy caviar; both were phenomenal just wish the cowboy caviar was warm. (The ranch was my favorite part). As for drinks please uber or walk (we walked) they were poured strong and tasted so good you just gotta get a second one! This works out though because the patio was cozy enough to park it for a bit. Definitely worth a shot. Probably a less of a kid friendly place than other options around.
google avatar

Cass O.

Yelp
Always a stop on our trip! Here is the thing, they are busy and you might have to wait for a seat! Make sure you plan enough time in trip to visit and wait to be seated. They fill up quickly. I saw so many people coming in and expecting the bar or seating to be opened and getting upset they had to wait. Boat drinks wasn't turning them away, there just wasn't anything opened. The 1st and 2nd floor are packed full..
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I LOVE boat drinks!!! Our servers are always so friendly and helpful. I usually get the Mexican martini and I've never had a bad one. The drinks are quite literally always good. Definitely recommend if you're in town !!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
What a fun fun place! The vibe is cool - big open space - decorated to the 10's for Halloween right now - immediate attention from like 3-4 people describing their menu - cocktails and all great service!!! So many great concoctions and they offer to mix and match however you want it!!! We all tried something different and shared!!! Must make a regular place to go. A bit pricey but you definitely get what you pay for!!! CHEERS

Yelp
It was packed when we got here so we got our drinks and had them upstairs, outside which overlooks the other St. Augustine ships and restaurants. The drink I got was the key lime pie Daiquiri, which was smaller than other daiquiris ove had and didn't have as much presentation at their other drinks. I think it sounded better than it actually tasted. I wouldn't get this flavor again and I love key lime pie ot was just - meh.
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
The bartenders at St. Augustine Distillery recommended this hangout on Saint George St., and as locals, they know where to go after work to get strong drinks and fun company. They also recommended we try the Key Lime Pie Daiquiri and after having one, I second their suggestion! The place is not very large itself, but it does have an upstairs, which was hosting a private party when we were there. We sat at the bar and each of the bartenders were friendly, talkative and made exceptional drinks that both tasted great and looked fantastic! The Key Lime Pie Daiquiri was a mixture of white rums, lime, coconut and vanilla spice, with graham cracker dust on top. We also tried the Mojito Bandito (unaged rum, mint, lime, cane sugar, soda and bitters) and the Port Star (Polish vodka, lime, passion fruit, vanilla, white port and bubbles). The drinks were created with great care and were photo perfection. We also decided to try the Charbroiled Oysters and they were better than the ones in New Orleans! It consisted of 1/2 dozen oysters set in garlic butter, with michelada sauce and pecorino cheese, served with pressed Cuban bread. The sauce cleans out your nostrils in a good way without being too overpowering. One of the bartenders even offered us extra Cuban bread to soak up the sauce. The oysters were a tasty delight. Several locals also "bellied up to the bar" throughout the night and had a drink before moving on. It's always great to go where the locals go in a tourist area as the place is most likely NOT a tourist trap. Boat Drinks is highly recommended for a fun night or the start of a fun night! We were one of the last customers to leave.

Yelp
This spot is so fun! They have drink menus for every holiday season. The staff is so kind and fun. We sat at the bar and got the fish bites, AMAZING! the drink I picked was a slant on a espresso martini with pumpkin spice! 10/10 Def worth a stop and or to pregame before dinner which is what we did!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful new place ... I live in St A and we've been watching construction for a year now. It's finally open and it's just what we needed, esp at he Morty's end of town (so it's easy to get to). Great, beautiful drinks, a beautiful environment and excellent service. Food was great. We had shrimp sliders, burger, and peppered shrimp , all just a tad bit different (but not weird l) and all excellent. Super highly recommended!.
google avatar

Stacy A.

Yelp
Wow ! What a cool new place to hang out ! We had drinks and the chips and dip app. This was the best chip and dip platter I have ever seen . 4 dips , plantain chips and tons of fresh veggies! Drinks were amazing too!
google avatar

Lea D.

Yelp
My fiancé and I were taking a self guided drinking tour around st Augustine and stopped by here after reading some good reviews. The place was small but there is an area upstairs which I believe you can rent out. We were able to get a spot at the bar. They had some holiday themed drinks that all looked good and it was a bit hard to decide which to choose. We asked the bartender what he thought and took him up in his recommendations. The shots and drinks were good and not overpriced! I would definitely stop in again.
google avatar

Jesika K.

Yelp
I love oysters and this is now my go to spot. The sauce on the charbroiled was so different and unique and just tasty. The raw oysters were my favorite in a very long time. All the drinks were tasty, the inside and outside is so cute and we were helped very quickly. I cannot wait to come back.
google avatar

Sherry J.

Yelp
What a fun bar! We came here specifically for the coconut margarita. Wow, tequila, coconut, lime, pineapple, and seawater(?), what's not to love! The staff is fun and friendly, and the food is terrific. Our party loved the oysters, and the chips and dips were made using plantains, pimento cheese and caribbean caviar. We will definitely be back to work our way through this menu!
google avatar

Sasha t.

Yelp
Heyyyyyyyy you guyyyyyyyysssss! This place is a MUST if you love oysters and good eats. Fresh, delicious and so good! The service was top notch, lots of folks in and out, the place is popular for sure. We had the best time with our server and everything we ordered was great! They do not disappoint when it comes to the oyster quality they serve. The decor was fun, seating upstairs and downstairs. Great atmosphere, really appreciated the quality in all aspects. Let's eat!!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
A tourist spot? Maybe. But that doesn't mean it can't be a great experience. Take your time. Peruse the drink menu. I love the Mexican Martini. Next course of action, look to the Oyster Board. They're a little pricey, but damn, they never disappoint. It's the kind of place where you can have a moment with someone while people are all around. Head upstairs and sit on the balcony. The people watching is fun too. I've had apps that were great. The rest of the menu looks very good. I don't think anything is a risk. Service has always been awesome. If Matt's working, he'll take good care of you. Cheers to a little day drinking.

Jim C.

Yelp
Best Burger in town... but new location has changed the Vibe. Crazy loud inside. But 1 of the owners refused to add a side of the roasted-oyster sauce that I've had for all 20-25 burgers I've enjoyed over the last couple years (and charged for it). Not in any hurry to go back as it seems to be going toward night club.. and dropped the Happy Hour.
google avatar

Carli S.

Yelp
Cocktail menu is great, Lots of fun options. Colorful bar, friendly waitstaff, and nice patio to sit outside.

Brent W.

Yelp
Really fun place. Great drinks and great oysters. We had a great time. Highly recommend

Yelp
This is a two story bar located right off the main strip of DT historic St. Augustine. Fantastic tropical drink selection and excellent service. Our server was very attentive and never left us with an empty glass. I will say a lot of the drinks were very strong, but overall we enjoyed ourselves. The décor and interior is stellar with a very tasteful nautical theme with a fun and funky color palette. They also had the most beautiful and artsy menu I have ever seen. Hats off to the artist who designed the menu. Bathrooms were immaculate and we even ordered a couple oysters. My friend said they were excellent (I don't enjoy the sea boogers).
google avatar

Agnes H.

Yelp
First this place does not feel like a tourist trap bar. It's amazing and has an awesome vibe. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. We had several drinks, the fish dip and Brussels sprouts. Hands down the best BS I've had. Very flavorful and not greasy. A must stop.
google avatar

Barbara M.

Yelp
Food, drinks and service were great. I had the pain killa which was great. We snacked on the chips and dips, we were so yummy. Highly recommend!
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
My favorite bar in STA. The drinks are the best in NE FL. One of my favorite times to go is during the holidays when they have Xmas themed tropical drinks like the Noggystyle. They also have a top shelf rum program. I got to try an oz of the Appleton 2002. OMG! The blackened fish sandwich is excellent. You can also get some oysters. Sit out on the deck overlooking St. George and watch the crowds.
google avatar

Madison G.

Yelp
This place was cute! Good ambiance. Oysters were delicious - but expensive. $3.50/each for oysters is insane for a casual place like this. I also thought it was strange that out martinis came in high ball glasses with ice.
google avatar

Glenn G.

Yelp
This place is on St. George street so it gets busy. Nice and clean on the inside and great views if you can get on one of the decks. No draft beer so that was a negative for me. The menu had lots of interesting drinks. The food menu was limited but the fish dip and oysters were delicious. Watch the pepper symbols on the menu that designate spicy. Many similar choices in St. Aug, but definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
We were told by another local that this was THE place for THE best cocktails and burger. So we tried to check it out for lunch, but it was jam packed. Came back for a cocktail later on and couldn't believe how delicious the margaritas were. We had the Mega-Rita and the Coconut Margarita ...both were the best we have ever had. Came back later on for dinner and shared the famous burger. I thought: "ok it will be a good burger...what's the big deal?" Omg. Hands down, the best burger we have ever had. The decor inside is adorable. Servers were great. Only downside is it's pretty small and pretty popular so hard to get a table.
google avatar

Dj L.

Yelp
Excellent location! Right on St. George and you can sit outside and people watch. Service was fast and I had the mojito. Delicious! The lady had the Port Star, there was an off taste to it. I think there was too much of some tangy ingredient or something forgotten. Couldn't drink half of it! Cool vibe in the inside and it's very unique. I would try a different bar next time, but it was a cool stop.
google avatar

RichE R.

Yelp
This place was great and very inviting because of the staff. Although we did not order food it still looked amazing coming out of the kitchen. The ambiance was stylish and an open space with a cute patio. The bar staff was so amazing to us and very fun. Highly recommend
google avatar

Maya C.

Yelp
Mixed feelings about boat drinks honestly. Pros: staff is amazing, courteous and generally really cool. Like the people and the energy really have an influence on what makes their business successful imo. Drinks are unique and made well and made consistently which is huge to me if I'm spending $15 on a cocktail, I like to know I can come back to it and it's reliable. BUT Cons: quality of food is questionable, my friend and I ordered peel and eat shrimp and she broke out in hives (she doesn't have a shell fish allergy but can be sensitive to some frozen shrimp, we asked where they got it and they told us "freshly caught"???), I've also gotten jerk chicken that's been less cooked than I normally expect kebabs to be. Another con is it is expensive, I understand it's the name of the game in a tourist town but idk I can't justify paying that much money for drinks when there are indeed other options in the city. They don't have a lot of drinks with gin either, mostly rum and tequila I get that it's a curated menu, so not that made about availability and even their weird hours don't make me that annoyed, but the hives will do it. It's beautifully decorated and very clean. Maybe I'm going too hard on them?? Or maybe I'm writing this yelp review with detail to avoid my laundry.
google avatar

Martha G.

Yelp
Two story building. We sat upstairs Bright fun decorations. Amazing staff. A much needed oasis away from the loud busy crowd outside. It was like a different world. Everything we had was delicious. Very unique flavors. We had Oysters, peppered shrimp, jerk chicken skewers, double cheese burger, blackened fish sandwich, shrimp sliders and Plaintain chips. They also had a fun holiday cocktail menu. What a great find!
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
Nice spot along St George St in St. Augustine. My wife & I went upstairs to the bar area and had some beer & the Tile fish (Blackened Fish Sandwich) with Plantains & Pasta Salad. The cut of fish was nice and thick and cooked to perfection. The ambience was festive for the Christmas holiday and the service was very good. From the outside looks to be just a bar but was pleasantly surprised with the food. I would recommend checking it out!

Yelp
The Charbroiled Oysters from Boat Drinks were hands down the best food I put in my face during my trip to St. Augustine. I always looked for cooked, roasted or charbroiled oysters wherever I go because when they are done right they can be really amazing like what I found here. The oysters were the plumpest, meatiest, juiciest ones I had in a while. The oysters come with bread triangles to mop up their tangy, delicious sauce they are cooked in. I asked about the sauce and the bartender said it was a Michelada with a dash of Worchester sauce - they whip up a mighty concoction! The oysters were certainly the lead , but this is probably the place you want to come if you are a serious drinker - their selection is amazing with some potent well made cocktails. I am not a major drinker, but their rum forward pina colada was a happy hour hit for me. I asked for a sour beer the bartender brought 3 recommendations so I went with the Pineapple Whip which was a great find. During my week long trip I came back again just for those oysters. They didn't have a large menu, but I will come back to try what I suspect are other well made items. The bar had a cool vibe - I hesitate to use the word "hipster" because of the negative connotation in some circles, but the good looking staff were down to earth and welcoming making this place you want to be in St. Augustine.

Yelp
10 out of 10. I'm reviewing the new location. I was a huge fan of the previous location which was totally rad but the move to San Marco Ave gives it a whole new vibe and I'm in love. First I'm going to note that it's a bar not a restaurant but the food is exceptional on every level. The hospitality is so warm and welcoming and you can tell the locals love this place. If your are coming with little ones, show up early. They will absolutely love the food, but I'm a huge fan of adult time after 7pm. Dog friendly? Hell yes. I promise you that there is no better selection of spirits and wine in St. Aug and for sure nobody makes better cocktails. Approachable and adventurous. You could be the hippest hipster from NYC or my gramma visiting from Alabama, you'll love it. this is the move... peel and eat and char broil oysters to start. Wash it down with a frozen marg. They use the good tequila. Get fish bites and a Mexican Martini at some point. I wish I was still there.

Yelp
I got to Boat Drinks a little late on Sunday afternoon but still managed to get a great cocktail before they closed. The bartender was knowledgeable and helpful, providing good suggestions and advice for other spots to visit. The outdoor seating was a fun mix of people and everyone seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere and music.
google avatar

Thomas N.

Yelp
New location is great! I had grouper bites and the Caribbean caviar and they were both really good. The drinks were on point as always. Will miss the old location but am not mad about the new one.
google avatar

Shawnda L.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch and Jasmine was great!! Everything we had was good. My friend didn't like the Caribbean caviar but that's a preference. The frozen margarita was good as well. Sitting outside was fun as we got to people watch and enjoy a good meal. We specifically stopped because we wanted oysters, the oysters were good, both the steamed and raw!

Van S.

Yelp
Excellent bartenders and best drink selections I've ever been to. Oyster selection was impressive

Yelp
Can't recommend this place enough!! We stopped in for dinner on a Friday night and was surprised to see available seats. The food was delicious (burger dipped in peppered shrimp sauce is ). Food came out promptly and the employees were always available. This will be our regular St. Augustine stop!!
