Where to Celebrate or Escape Valentine’s Day Without Reservations in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"I love this cozy Humboldt Park cafe overlooking the lagoon; situated inside the Chicago Park District boathouse it offers lovely views even in winter and a tight selection of burgers and salads, plus fried chicken pieces served with fries and a slice of cake." - Naomi Waxman

Amazing food and excellent service (thank you Omari)! Highly recommended. The avocado bowl was fresh and flavorful. The pancake was sooo good a d sausage links incredibly flavorful. Overall, an excellent experience and we will be back.

First off, we waited about 30 minutes to be seated which is totally fine if the food is good. It was not in fact good. For starters, the hollandaise was weirdly cheesy. The breakfast tacos had barely any meat or peppers and the cheese was cold which made the eggs cold. But the true abomination of this meal was the salsa! It will forever remain the most vile “salsa” I have ever had the displeasure of consuming. It’s a tomato paste base with some green peppers and chopped onions added. Literally just tastes like a mouthful of those little cans of tomato paste! Also the hash”browns” were whiter than my legs after a winter in Akron. The place was very cute and servers were pleasant, thus the two stars and not one. Tragic….

Me and the wifes first time here. We like trying new places. I got the country fried steak. We'll neither the country fired steak or the potatoes had any seasoning. Really just flavorless. The eggs tasted like bad, either carton eggs or bad eggs. The flavor was that of kitty litter in the air. My wife had the eggs Benedict and she said they were ok. She had the blue berry coffee which she liked alot. Over all a bit disappointed that the flavor just wasn't there at all. Im all for second chances and will try again sometime down the road.

First time there. Super cute loved the decore. The staff was friendly and great. The food was really good. We chose the fruit plate. The breakfast tacos 🌮. And hasg browns. And cubed potatoes. Everything came out hot! The portio s were big. We left happy and full! Loved that the chef came out and asked us how it was he was super friendly

Although the location is out of the way and the outside plaza is unassuming, the boathouse cafe is a great brunch spot. The lighting is fantastic. It provides for a great ambience and amazing photos. Additionally, the decorations and theme are consistent and add a nice visual appeal to the place. It is small, but comfortable. The biggest draw of the place is how visually appealing it is inside. However, the food is quite good too. I have come for brunch on several occasions and have found the crepes and waffles to be my favorites. A great date spot or place to bring family or friends

Google
Great place. They'll seat you when you walk in (or give you a beeper if there is a wait). The staff was great. Food was great. Crab cake Benedict was awesome. Good vibe. Easy parking. Fair pricing. Go!

Google
This is a great little gem tucked away in gala commons. I'm old enough to remember when it was a drive in movie theater. Love their decor all boat themed . They're all pretty friendly and the restaurant is very clean. They're busy especially on the weekends so prepare to wait . As far as the food goes it's good . I've had most items on their menu . It's all the classic breakfast menu items well made . I guess I'm a little snobbish in my older age and well traveled self . Price point is fair . You'll pay nearly the same at some fast food locations. They're breakfast and lunch only . I usually get the overboard . Please come and visit this lovely place.

Google
I saw good reviews of the Boathouse Cafe and tried it for breakfast. I had the locally sourced Duma Meat country fried steak with gravy, home fries, scrambled eggs and rye toast. It was actually an inch thick steak. I am used to chopped steak. It was good. I really enjoyed the Pearl Coffee which is located in Akron. My experience was very good and will be back to try some other breakfast dishes.

Yelp
We just made our first visit to The Boathouse and were quite surprised by how small the restaurant is. With it being a Sunday morning, our wait time was considerable. The hostess estimated 10-20 minutes, but it was closer an hour. We continued to wait after being seated for another 15-20 minutes before receiving our beverages. Later, we had to have another server get our server for refills of coffee. From start to finish, our experience was just shy of two hours. Not ideal, but we know to plan accordingly next time. The food, however was phenomenal. I got "The Overboard," which included two eggs, meat (I chose sausage), crispy hash browns & a fluffy pancake. We definitely received hearty portions of everything & it was all well made. Without a doubt, one of the better breakfast spots in the area. I can see why they draw such a crowd.

Shondra Z.

Yelp
Our second visit & both times the food, service, coffee, and cleanliness were top notch. They are willing to make substitutions & everything done with a smile. We will be back anytime we're in town and need breakfast!

Yelp
Solid food, nice staff, and well done space overall. They have a decent selection of foods for all your breakfast/brunch or lunch cravings. My wife wanted waffles and that is why we came here, she wasn't disappointed. I had a grilled buffalo chicken wrap with their house made chips. I had plenty of chips leftover to take home but not because they weren't good. We enjoyed our lunch here and would come back again.

Yelp
The service was good, it a small establishment , it took a while for the waitress to come back to my table to check on us. I needed sugar-free syrup, took a while to get the waitress to return. The look of the restaurant was "boat themed ", which was nice. It was very clean, bathrooms too. The food was good my wife loved the crab cakes , she mentioned how " fresh tasting " they were. I had the blueberry pancakes w/eggs & bacon. The pancakes were nice and hot blueberries were cooked into the pancakes which I enjoyed. I would return back more often if it wasn't so far from where we live .

Yelp
Service is top notch! You won't be disappointed in the atmosphere here. Very inviting and comfortable. Sit down, relax and enjoy the amazing food you are scout to order.

Yelp
Firstly, we got sat down and we thought the place looked cute and clean- that was the only good thing about this place. The service was horrible, we waited 35 minutes for our food and that entire time, our server did not come to ask us for refills or give us an update on what is maybe taking so long. The hostess had to get our drinks even. When our food did come out, it was brought out by a cook.. again, our server had not even been around at this time. The pancakes were huge which is cool, but unbelievably dry. Our bacon was severely undercooked and floppy.. who do we ask about this when our server is so inattentive? When the server finally did come over she just asked if I wanted a refill in which I replied yes- that took about 10-15 mins to receive; she ignored my boyfriend's empty cup. This whole time she never even introduced herself so I am unsure of her name, she was clearly unhappy to even be there and did not have upbeat energy whatsoever. We only saw her 1 more time when it came time to pay. It was my boyfriend's birthday and I feel like he was punished having to be at this place for breakfast time. I would never recommend this place to anyone I like.

Emerson E.

Yelp
I was there today. I was very disappointed with the service took them over 30 minutes to get my food out and when it came out, it was cold server took forever to give us our check and she was just clearly unhappy to be there. Obviously, the kitchen failed as well.

Sophia R.

Yelp
My husband and I we have tried different breakfast places were happy so we always go down on Saturday. The staff is wonderful. The food is delicious. We never go any of that place again. I definitely recommend them.

Yelp
Tried this place out for brunch on Sunday at around noon. We received a beeper and had to wait about 25 minutes for a table which was all good for a busy mealtime. Once we were seated, our server brought us waters and then proceeded to ignore us for the vast majority of the time we were there. We were seated in the corner and not asked if we wanted to sit outside and it seemed like most of the server attention was going to the tables outside. We were perfectly friendly but literally had to flag someone down to get a water refill and some coffee. We were told she would be right back with coffee and then didn't see anyone again for 20 minutes. I feel I am patient and understand things get missed sometimes but over two hours for two of us to get breakfast is a little ridiculous to me. They were not THAT busy and there appeared to be plenty of servers moving about. That said, no one was rude to us or anything - we were just forgotten. The food wasn't bad but it was nothing spectacular, especially with the lack of service. Maybe it was an off day but unfortunately this place just missed the mark for us.

Yelp
Great modern diner that keeps blends the timeless diner with modern touches in both menu and ambiance. I enjoyed the steak and eggs which had creamy gravy. The steak was cooked properly and plenty of flavorful breading. My wife had chorizo tacos which she devoured. Potatoes, yes the have both cubes and shredded so whichever side of that debate you'll come out a winner.

Yelp
My brother and I went for brunch on a Sunday around 1130 and understandably there was a bit of a wait. It was a cute little mom and pop like diner vibe mixed with coastal decor. Once we were sat l, the server Sophia came over. I ordered a mimosa and she told me no alcohol sales on Sunday (I personally think this should be on the menu). She didn't offer any other options and seemed at after us that received food faster. My brother ordered the buffalo wrap with no onions and a side salad. As a prior server, I would have mentioned there are onions on the salad... but she didn't. Both the salad and the wrap came out loaded with red onions. I ordered the over board with bacon, hash browns, eggs over medium and a pancake (the menu also said bread I think). His food came out, mine was about 3 minutes behind.. other than the pancake and toast. She came back and said it should be out soon. We were never asked if we needed anything else when the food was delivered. When she came back to let me know it still wasn't ready I informed her of the onions in the wrap as, and she just said sorry and walked away. She delivered food to the table behind us (in a piecemeal fashion) and i got her attention and told her just to not worry about bringing the pancake since I was almost done. She asked if we wanted the wrap remade and I asked how long it would take.. she didn't have any ballpark guess so we said no. She brought the check and I asked for it to be updated to reflect the breakfast combo without the pancake since I didn't receive it.. she kept telling me "it wasn't extra". The price was a dollar difference. After the wrong items, no ketchup/hot sauce/etc, and missing items, I feel that was a reasonable request. We then saw her at the counter speaking to a woman in a black chef coat (assuming manager), this woman bussed the table next to us before the check was dropped off, and never came to speak to us. Sophia then came to ask if she could take our plates as my card was out and we had waited. Again, from being in the service industry for many years during college and frad school, cues should be taken to take the payment and then come back for plates. It was so disappointing that the service and customer service was so poor and the kitchen wasn't coordinated because the menu looked promising.

Randy R.

Yelp
They had food. The was cooked but some of it wasn't. As far as great food goes I couldn't tell you because we've never eaten there

Yelp
M- they have stepped it up from our last visit ordered the soup and a pancake. The soup was tasty and surprising for 7:30 am the pancake was to big for a light breakfast a little too solid for flapjacks big boys silverware which I appreciated. If you like boats there is plenty to stare at. All in all not a bad stop in the am should make a lunch stop sometime

Yelp
My wife and I tried The Boathouse for the first time after my wife received a newsfeed. The location isn't very prominent and you might miss it as it's on the far end of a strip mall, but don't the outside fool you. The inside is Boathouse Fabulous. It's not very big on the inside as far as seating goes, but it has high ceilings with lots to look at. We arrived around 10:30 am and had to wait around 26 minutes. We were given a wireless notification transmitter that chimed. (Probably easier to have a texting feature and avoid the cost of losing the transmitters. ) Our server was amazing. She was warm and bubbly and made us smile. My wife tried the biscuits and gravy which she absolutely loved. I tried the Breakfast Charcuterie and scrambled eggs (extra charge) which came out in a wonderful presentation. My only problem is that the pancakes and Belgian waffle were cold and the sausage were undercooked. This would have been a home run breakfast if there was a way of preparing all the components and having them still hot. Again besides the temperature, the food wasn't bad. Seems like the pancakes and waffles were not cooked to order.

Steve F.

Yelp
Had brunch on a weekday. Food was outstanding and service was excellent and very friendly. I would imagine it gets very busy on weekends, but everything came quickly for us.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
Trying hard to like the Boathouse, but coffee is weak, water is not filtered, and it is very very VERY loud inside. Servers hustle, seating and drinks come fast, food pretty quickly. We're lucky to have a diner in this area.
google avatar

Sarah I.

Yelp
It was just average. The waitress was new and sweet, we had a big group and they did an excellent job with us. The food was just okay. I hate when beers aren't filled to the top, it's such a waste.

Yelp
On my home from Wing-foot Lake State Park I decided to stop at this little upscale breakfast/lunch dinner. Nice surprise to see all the delicious food being served up in an simple clean fresh looking restaraunt. My turkey wrap was yummy & the potato chips were homemade & delicious. I was there on Saturday on a magnificent Summer day for lunch. The restaraunt was buzzing with conversation of customers. I sat outside & the service was pleasantly attentive but the kitchen slow. On such a great day with good food & friendly pleasant service who could not like this place!

Cortney E.

Yelp
Food was great, they have a variety on the menu! Super cute spot to grab breakfast, fast & friendly service.

Larry S.

Yelp
Wife loves eggs benedict. She rated the ones at this restaurant as top notch. Pancakes are very good and enormous. Place was busy but service was good. Very clean. You will have to hunt for this place at the far end of a small strip mall, but it is worth it.

Yelp
We go here at least once a month, sometimes more. They have pretty good food here, a lot of simple dishes with slightly elevated twists. Their service is good and the atmosphere varies, it's either very loud or super quiet there is no in between lol.

Penny S.

Yelp
This is our new go to for Saturday mornings. My husband and I like to go out on Saturday mornings. Found this place just a google search. Our old breakfast place was just ok food with nice staff. This is one of the cleanest restaurants we've been in, in some time. I love the avocado toast. Wonderful flavors. And coffee is very good. Today I tried the French toast. It was too soft for me, but I like mine almost crunchy. And I'm sure the bread was very fresh. My husband likes the fried potatoes. And today he had the eggs Benedict. Said it was very good, would get again. We even took our grandson for a birthday lunch. The staff is great. Everyone is very pleasant. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I have a pet peeve, it's with service. We needed to get lunch we had an appointment with the VA. When we walked in we had 1 Hour and 15 mins., plenty of time. We ordered two sandwiches neither difficult, BLT plus egg and Chicken Salad. I got a smoothie, which had no flavor, I kept asking if I was loosing my taste buds. It took most of the hour and 15 minutes for the food to be prepared. The couple who walked in with us were served and left before our food arrived. My husband and I are elderly, more on that in a minuet, we were not locals. We don't and probably never will eat there again so we got pushed to the back. Let me tell them, that extra money from walk ins will help some time. Elderly, until we moved back to Ohio my age was never mentioned in a doctor's office, church. or place of business. We came from California, people could be rude, but your age never entered into service. Because older people still have money. They pay your bills. Serve them as they come in to eat and don't think they have plenty of time.
google avatar

Gabby R.

Yelp
This has become one of my favorite brunch places in the Akron area. I love vacationing on the coast of New England and the atmosphere, menu and ambiance definitely give me those vibes. I ordered the crab cake Benedict. It was so delicious. Everything I would have expected. The serving size was very generous too. The service was great! The staff were friendly and were good about checking up on us. I love it here will definitely become a regular.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Great food. We know when we go that we will wait. They have a beeper so we took a walk. Nice breakfast menu their cheese omlette you have choice of cheddar, Swiss or pepper jack. I wish they would have provolone. Home fries nice and crispy love that they have Frank's Hot Sauce ! Husband ordered scrambled eggs nice and fluffy and home fries and chorizo and big @$$ pancake staff is always hustling . The only negative is trying to get someone's attention for coffee/iced tea. Still on one of our favorite brunch spots
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
This could have been a nice restaurant. I love the decor and open Ness. Lots of large windows. A bar sit at. You can see a bit of the kitchen from the bar. I had an egg, white veggie omelette, which was good. My mom had potato pancakes, which were excellent, but the service was subpar. I indicated that I had a dairy allergy. I asked what kind of oil they use because I'm also sensitive to soy. The waitress responded that they use butter. I asked her if they had any dairy free frying options. She said she had no idea. She was supposed to go and check to see if they could use olive oil or canola oil, etc. instead of butter. However, she just put my order through and brought it out to me. An egg, white veggie omelette with added cheese inside and on top. then she seemed put off that I needed it without cheese. So the food we eat here was good but the service was terrible. No refills on my water, etc..
google avatar

Fred S.

Yelp
Food is good service is good ambiance is awesome did not have to wait that was about 10 am

Kevin A.

Yelp
Best breakfast I've had in Ohio! Place is legit! The kids loved it, I loved it, service and time to table a bit slow but SO WORTH IT. Excellent excellent excellent!

Sophie T.

Yelp
I don't typically leave reviews for places but I was very disappointed in our service. My husband and I spent an hour waiting at our table for food, not including the 45min we had already spent waiting for a seat. We watched many other 2 tops and a 7 top receive their food before us. Our server never came out to apologize for the wait or explain why things were taking so long. The food itself wasn't bad but definitely not worth the money and almost 2 hrs of the day. On top of that when our food came out, my husband's side of bacon had a hair in it. The place seemed so cute and we were excited about trying something new but I don't see us ever returning.
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
Really excited about this cute new breakfast spot so close to home! It's tucked away in the Gala Commons, but I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of patrons in this newer place! The interior is completely redone & beautiful! The servers are well-trained & attentive. The only bummer was that the food took a *long* time to come out, but hoping that is ironed out with time. I had the Overboard Breakfast- egg, bacon, potatoes, toast & a pancake and my husband had the meat lovers omelette. We both left with to-go boxes due to generous portions! Overall, I'm excited to welcome this spot into our rotation and neighborhood!
google avatar

SmugDog C.

Yelp
I'd say this is my fave breakfast spot in Akron. Really nice atmosphere and delicious food. Wait is never super long. Coffee is delicious
google avatar

Jerid P.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great food, great service. We stopped by for breakfast while in the area and we were not disappointed. I'd make the 45min drive back out for another plate of their biscuits and gravy!

Anthony Z.

Yelp
Quick service. Water is clear and icy . Coffee good and fresh. Mid. Great food. Eggs perfect. Hash browns over the top. Toast was thick. Bacon was fine. Everything was clean
google avatar

Tonya A.

Yelp
Food is good.. service was okay.. my waitress at times felt like she forgot she had a customer.. at one point she even took a cigarette break.. not sure if I'll return

Mary P.

Yelp
My first time here and I was very impressed! Not only is the place clean and neat... the food was delicious! My compliments to the chef as well as the wait staff! Well done!! I had the Greek omelet, which was perfectly cooked... my friend had breakfast which included a pancake. I made her give me a taste of her pancake and it was the best I've ever had in a restaurant! Really good! I will be back!!
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
Love this place! Great food and service. My favorite new breakfast spot. It's a bit tight, so keep that in mind if you're a big group.
google avatar

Madison B.

Yelp
A little hidden gem! Great food. The pancakes are out of this world, and I'm not even a pancake person! Friendly staff, and cute atmosphere, they keep the place clean!

Denise H.

Yelp
Great brunch today. Food was tasty, fresh & hot. Server Jordan is personable & efficient.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Service was very fast and nice, breakfast burritos and potatoes were very yummy, very clean! Will come back
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
I've been here many times, I've enjoyed everything I've ever had. But this past weekend I came in with my husband and coworker like I've done many times and the owner was there... and the place was a crowded and our food took an hour and a half and the waiter told us it was backed up which I completely understand and some people were new. I can appreciate this happening I understand things happen. But when the owner is there and people are complaining I feel he should have came out and started helping his staff out because that's good business and I as a business owner would have done that very thing.

Yelp
Looking for an adorable family-owned breakfast spot? Head to The Boathouse Cafe and you won't be disappointed! This cute local scene serves chic decorations, picture-worthy color schemes, tasty breakfast and brunch dishes, and some of the kindest, most attentive staff you'll find! Despite the limited restaurant space, we were seated immediately upon arriving - though we did notice a line beginning to form shortly after we got there, as it's not a very large space. We each started with a smoothie -- one blueberry pineapple and one mango banana -- and they were a refreshingly delicious way to begin our experience. The blueberry pineapple smoothie was so good it deserves an extra shoutout! To eat, we had the avocado bowl and the Spanish omelette, and they did not disappoint. The avocado bowl was filled with handfuls of fresh, colorful veggies, and the omelette was topped with the cafe's delicious house-made red sauce. The hash brown potatoes weren't the greatest, as they seemed a bit undercooked. But overall, we had a wonderful experience, and their large and diverse menu options will definitely keep us coming back for more!

Yelp
Quality food but a little pricey. Small dining room. Nice atmosphere, though, with good home fries and coffee.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
Great place for brunch, staff extremely friendly and attentive! Food was awesome! Thanks Lori and Christina!

David J.

Yelp
Went there yesterday for a late breakfast. Had the western omelette and home fries. It was great! Very nice presentation on the plate too. The staff were friendly, and the portions were very good. It's a small place and somewhat hard to find at the end of a strip mall-type building, but very nice. I'll go back again the next time I'm in the Akron area.

Andy P.

Yelp
2nd time here for breakfast. Excellent both times. Extremely clean. I know rating bathrooms is kinda weird but they were spotless. Staff very friendly and attentive.

Tom H.

Yelp
Had brunch. The sausage and swiss bowl was excellent. My wife's breakfast plate was also fantastic. One star off because of the wait. Totally worth it, though. Staff hustling, with nice interaction. Definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
We love the Boathouse, love the atmosphere, love the food ,love the coffee and the employees are great. We enjoy our breakfast there. Would highly recommend.

Olivia C.

Yelp
The woman inside told me there was less than a 10 min wait. We waited 25 mins. Then we ordered and she came back about 45 mins later and got snippy with me. Then she took our order again because she "lost it". Mediocre food. Horrible experience.

Katie H.

Yelp
Best menu options around town. Great customer service and a speedy kitchen. I will be back!
