My girlfriend and I decided to anchor our hunger to The Boathouse on the Bay for the Weekend Breakfast on Sunday. Unfortunately, the consistency of the food experience was a bit choppy.
THE GOOD:
- The views of Alamitos Bay in Long Beach is spectacular. Ask for a table seating close to the windows so you can enjoy blue skies and water during the meal. We were seated one table away from the window and had a beautiful view to enjoy - a huge plus of this restaurant.
- The service, overall, was good and attentive. Our entire experience, from checking in, to have our orders taken with a friendly woman, to food delivery timing was pretty smooth.
- The drinks were very tasty. I had a local draft beer, while my date had a delicious Regatta Colada ($17), a blend of Myers' Blonde Rum Disaronno Amaretto & Giffard Orgeat with Fresh Lime Juice and Pineapple Juice. It was tasty, not too sweet and satisfying.
THE BAD:
- Unfortunately, the food wasn't the best quality, especially for the premium prices. I had the Bayside Omelette ($24), which was prepared with Lobster, Shrimp, Crab, Green Onion, Swiss Cheese and Confit Home Fried Potatoes. The Omelette was very bland, practically no flavor, and also had Olives. The fried potatoes were not warm, extremely dry and wrinkly and lacked seasoning. Additionally, during my last bite, I encountered a shell from what I believe was a piece of lobster. Not the best way to enjoy a Sunday Brunch.
- My girlfriend had the Lobster Benedict ($30), 4oz of Maine Lobster Claw on two Toasted English Muffins, Poached Eggs, Hollandaise, served with Confit Home Fried Potatoes. She told me the Lobster, Eggs and Hollandaise were tasty, however, the fried potatoes were the same as mine: very underwhelming, dry and flavorless. She also ordered a $12 cup of the New England Clam Chowder, which was a pretty expensive price for a very average amount.
In summary, I didn't find the restaurant particularly busy at Noon on a Sunday (about 2/3 full), so I can't really explain the food being warm in temperature. The blandness of my items, along with the shellfish casing was unacceptable and definitely tarnished my experience. Not sure what the other food menus and options are like, but I would definitely pause coming back to park myself at this Boathouse, as there are plenty of other fish restaurants by the sea.
