We wanted to dine somewhere close to our hotel after a full, tiresome day at Kirkwood. So after changing our attire and relaxing a bit, we decided on a lake excursion to the shore and dining at a well recommended place. Our concierge told us about Boathouse on the Pier and we decided to go there, although the forecast called for a foot of snow in South Lake Tahoe and three to four feet of snow in the highlands, but supposedly the storm wouldn't hit until after we were back home. Trust the weatherman......
We entered the restaurant just as a gorgeous sunset was shining above menacing storm clouds over the lake. Heck, we figured at least a couple of hours before the storm, so let's eat! We were seated immediately, a part of six, with reservations made the same afternoon. We admired the deck seating and wondered how awesome it would be on a nice cool evening with the sunset....
Ally was our host, waitress and bar hostess. I am (well deservedly) giving five stars because of the exemplary service, great ambiance and delicious food, but... a couple of additional staff would be just the icing on the cake. We had four tables full during our visit, I can imagine on a sunny day, it would be critical mass...
The cocktails were outstanding, summery, often experimental. I had a special Margarita that left me wanting more. The other guests had Negronis, different mixes with Aperol, etc. It was a great beginning to a great night. Then the appetizers started rolling in; their succulent Sushi Bites, which are lightly and tenderly battered, Surimi, Avocado, Rice, Wasabi ginger, and Wasabi soy. Superb! We also had the Garlic Parmesan Brussel Sprouts, crispy, aromatic and very tasty, and finally the Baked Brie, with came with pears, roasted garlic, toasted almonds, fig jam and grapes.
And then there were the main courses. A splendid assortment of delicacies. I haven't tried Chilean Sea Bass in an eon, and there it was, delicately sautéed with white wine lemon butter, over a bed of wheat berry vegetable melange. Delicious. Another in our party had the Filet Mignon, deliciously medium-rare, with a red wine Demi glaze, and grilled asparagus. The Linguini with Chicken Breast was also yummy, and even their Fish and Chips came with a monumentally sized piece of haddock and delicious chips. Of course, their wine list was par for the course and we chose both a Napa White and Red.
And then as we were bloated, Ally came out with the Carrot Cake and Pineapple Sorbet dishes that ended up being totally eaten....
But meanwhile as we were joyfully enjoying our dinner, the storm had moved in. By the time we left, there must have been a good 8 inches on the ground and our hotel was almost at the base of the ski area Tramway. Sporty climb up the street......
A truly wonderful evening. Ally is the best. Great food and ambiance. Again, hopefully in the summer they hire a couple more people......
