Chez Bob de Tunis - Gastro Obscura

"Wandering the grand, elegant buildings of Paris’s 9th arrondissement, you may have encountered a scruffy,  distinctly incongruous shopfront. For decades now, Chez Bob de Tunis has refused to blend in with its surroundings while serving Tunisian-style snacks and light meals. The signature dish here is the sandwich tunisien, also known as kaskrout tounsi (from the French casse-croûte, meaning snack), a chubby baguette stuffed with tinned tuna, chunks of potato, tomato and cucumber salad, olives and capers, and an optional spicy sauce, a staple light meal in its homeland of Tunisia. That baguette indicates a French influence, but the sandwich may also have been inspired by another dish served at Chez Bob, the fricassé. Allegedly an invention of Tunisian Jews, the dish takes the same elements but stuffs them in a smaller, savory, doughnut-like fried brioche roll. At Chez Bob, the eponymous owner still assembles your sandwich, old photos line the wall, personal belongings are stacked up in the corners, and the kitchen is more domestic than professional—the kind of place where regulars grab drinks out of the fridge. Those sandwich elements are also available in platter form, and there’s a glass case with Tunisian fried savory snacks such as brik au thon, a samosa-like packet of pastry dough stuffed with tuna and hard-boiled eggs. Pair your meal with a can of pop from Tunisia, finish with a plate of halva, and grab a tub of preserved lemons to take home. By the time you step out on the street, you’ll have forgotten what city you’re in. Know Before You Go Chez Bob de Tunis is cash-only. If you fail to snag one of the two tables inside or the stools out front, simple take your sandwich to go." - Austin Bush

I don’t speak any French or Tunisian but we managed to communicate fine, I ate peacefully as some Tunisian guys on the table behind me chatted away with the owner. Great tuna sandwich, and a unique place.

Good classic tunisian food. Loved the authentic harissa (arabi) and tuna

Only in paris for the weekend but I saw this gem next door and was super excited to visit as I go to tunisia a lot and love their street food. I don't speak French very well so I asked if anyone spoke English and got sent to the table who I can only assume was the owner. As I attempted to ask him about the food I was rudely interrupted by a woman sat at the table with him. Another woman on the table said sorry so I continued and order some food. I was planning to eat it inside as a table freed up but I could hear that woman talking rude things behind my back about me in French (i understand a lot I just don't speak well). I didn't say anything as she was drinking alcohol but she made me feel like I shouldn't be there at all. I understand people complaining about hygiene but if anyone has ever been to tunisia you would know that not using gloves or even smoking indoors is normal and that didn't bother me at all. Now getting abuse for coming in to buy food is something I can't tolerate. Kudos to 2 elderly men working there who were trying to make me feel better and speak to me as well as they could. Needless to say I took my food takeaway and left the place heartbroken because I didn't expect to be abused in a place I wanted to visit so badly. I guess tunisians are only welcoming when in tunisia.

Such a great place. A hole in the wall but delicious.

Take some tuna, tangy pickled lemon, potato, egg, pepper, cucumber, olives and of course harissa, everything spilling out of a soft doughnutty bun - et voila, all is right with the world! A very special little hole in the wall. They also sell nuts, giant tins of tuna and special Tunisian fig vodka. Merci Monsieur and Madame Bob!

It is always a pleasure to see Bob. We visited him four time over 15 years and the quality was always excellent.

An absolute gem crossed with a time machine. Who knew Tunisian sandwiches are made with tuna? Go before this place disappears.
