The Best Restaurants in Medford | Eater Boston

"Bob’s is mostly a market and caterer, but the deli sandwiches are a must. Bob’s version of an Italian sub is especially good: It comes with Prosciutto di Parma, sopressata, capicola, mortadella, and provolone, and it can be beefed up with various other toppings." - Terrence Doyle

Italian sub? Heavyweight contender if not contested champ. If i'm within 3 miles of here i get a deluxe italian. No pickles extra hots. Only complaint and still five stars considering is they dont remove the pepper stems from their hots and sometimes you have to chew them. Even so, top 3 italian sub in the commonwealth of massachusetts and therefore planet earf. Drive by this place you're a cafoni for sure. Also fantastic prepared food, meats, coldcuts, cheeses and specialty desserts.

Continuing on our food run today of ‘Mike’s (Mike Sarno) mentionable munchies of Medford MA, we were told we HAD TO HAVE an italian sub. Where do you go?, Only to Bob's Italian on Main St! Gus Benavides took the first bite and said, ‘you’re going to love this!’ Sure did love it! We just ordered an italian sub. We let them make it with whatever they normally put in it. I am telling you….. In Coco’s World, BEST EVER!👍🏽 Resounding flavors….. pickles, hot cherry peppers, crusty bread, large flavorful sliced tomatoes, mortadella, ham, salami and who knows what else that makes this spectacular!!!! Yes, worth the trip! Subs are made quickly, parking right in front of the restaurant, reasonably priced. Great italian market also. Sliced deli meats on request. Fresh pasta in coolers. I am telling you, if you are craving an italian sub….. you will love this.

Google
The best Submarine sandwiches you can find in greater Boston served in giant portions. I have learned only to buy the small sandwich roll which is large enough for three meals. Non metered street parking. For years I have brought my family Submarine sandwiches and larger Italian meals from this deli. They have a large staff and an impressive deli and meat counter. Highly recommended

Google
O have been a happy customer of Bob's for many years (at least 35). I even have used them for catering. Quality of service has been outstanding. Their sandwiches can't be beat! The food is the freshest too. So sorry, though, that prices have had to rise .

Google
I can't give a review about the service since we ordered delivery. But the food is a 4 out of 10 at best. I ordered the large chicken Parm sub. I understand they dont cut or toast their sandwhiches. But there was no way I could eat the sandwhich I received. You wouldn't tell the difference between bread and chicken because everything was covered in sauce. There was so much filling I couldn't even pick it up. I had to deconstruct the whole sandwhich to eat it. The chicken itself was okay as it lacked flavor and was so soggy from the sauce. The red sauce has little to no flavor to it. And the cheese was just a big glob and not melted onto the chicken or bread. Mind you, this is a $23 sandwich... Their sweet potatoes Fries, regular fries, and mozzarella sticks are something you can find in your local grocery store freezer. Their pasta comes very hot and plentiful. But the Alfredo sauce was like soup consistency. They give you a lot of food but it doesnt make up for the way the food tastes. Way overpriced for what it is.

Google
Amazing spot for sandwiches and specialty Italian items. My wife and I love to split a meatball hero or the half and half hero (the sandwiches are huge). They also have amazing meats and cheeses (we love the prosciutto in particular) and I use their bread crumbs for my own chicken cutlets. Would highly recommend

Google
Great sandwiches, absolutely gargantuan , flavorful and great prices. Would definitely go again!

Google
First time in the area, this sandwich place let me tell you. The people were super nice and helpful, every one of them asked if we were being taken care of. The Sandwich I ordered was the Deluxe Italian fully loaded, it was great the toppings were on point and the meat cut to the perfect thickness. If you're thinking about stopping here to get a sandwich, stop thinking and start eating.

Yelp
Cannot give this place more stars!! The staff here is super friendly. Will order their steak and cheese through delivery apps and they never disappoint. The sub shop itself is super cute and comfy. 100% recommend

Yelp
Been going for about 20years now They recently added a guy taking orders on the floor he is very rude and not good with customers too bad cause the is good but terrible decision to add that guy

Yelp
Been there many times over the years. Always a good reliable sandwich worth a visit, lots of other condiments, etc. etc. etc..

Yelp
Wow the portions are huge! And they prepared it fast! It's in a mart so not really the place to sit down. I recommend the Italian deluxe caprese. Jumbo size was good enough for 2. So much deli meat and everything tasted so fresh! Parking is street parking

Yelp
Bobs has always been fantastic. Today, I got an eggplant Parmesan and it was horrible. Wasted $14, sub went right into the trash. So very disappointed. I will go back to bobs but definitely stick to what I'm used to. Italian sub is always a good bet.

Yelp
Whenever I think of Bob's, I think of my mother. She grew up in Medford and Bob's was a family favorite. Going to get sandwiches here with her was always a treat. Going here will always bring up fond memories. Today I ordered a large house Italian with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. The quality of the genoa salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone and all the toppings speak for themselves. Honestly, it's just a really delicious sandwich. The staff is really helpful and friendly. And there's lots of Italian grocery items for purchase as well. I can't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal sandwich experience. Classic and authentic Italian deli and small grocery. Prices match huge portions.

Yelp
Once upon a sub-erb evening, my fiancé and I found ourselves lured into the culinary realm of Bob's Italian Food, guided by the fateful words of a mysterious stranger. You see, my fiancé has been on a quest to find the holy grail of Italian subs, as many had left her in a state of disheartenment. As for myself, the foreigner with a mere "meh" attitude towards sandwiches, I decided to take on this journey for love. As we entered this cozy domain of doughy delights, our eyes feasted upon the sight of dedicated chefs, authentic Italian goodies, and a fridge housing tantalizing temptations. Our phone order of a Jumbo Italian sub and Jumbo BBQ steak tips sub was completed in a mere 15 minutes. Our journey continued homeward, the excitement (and hunger) building. Before I delve into the mouth-watering saga of these subs, let me digress and sing praises of Bob's fries - hot, fresh, and crispy - the kind of fries that inspire ballads and poems. A true must-have! And now, the moment of truth. Unwrapping these behemoth sandwiches - truly jumbo in every sense - I prepared to indulge. Skepticism clouded my mind, but I took that first bite... and was transported to Subtopia! The bread was a revelation - a heavenly pillow for the succulent BBQ tips, which were tender, massive, and bursting with flavor. My taste buds danced with delight, and I couldn't help but devour every last morsel, fearing that I may never experience such a gastronomical miracle again. My fiancé, too, fell in love with her Italian sub - a symphony of fresh mozzarella and a medley of deliciousness. It was as if our palates had been kissed by the very essence of Italy itself. Our sandwich affair has begun, and Bob's is now our go-to sanctuary for soul-soothing sustenance. So, to the stranger who whispered the name "Bob's Italian Food" into our lives, we raise a jumbo sub in gratitude. And to the virtuosic chefs who crafted these masterpieces, we salute you for the genuine passion you pour into each ingredient. If you ever find yourself torn between your love for a sandwich and your fiancé, just remember, in the end, Bob's Italian Food will always welcome you home! Highly, highly recommended - a five-star feast for the soul!

Yelp
Usually a go to place for sandwiches... but the gravy was so very salty on the chicken parm and eggplant parm ...this time they were not edible... I ordered 2 cold cut sandwiches and they were great!! I took the sandwiches up to Salem... I was embarrassed by the salt overload... I bragged about how fresh and delicious these sandwiches would taste. Unfortunately that was far from the case!! Of course service is great !! Efficient and friendly The customers all greeting each other... real neighborhood feel But please cut back on the salt.. it ruined our lunch!!

Yelp
The Italian subs here are legit. They do not skimp on the ingredients - the mortadella, the prosciutto, the salami, the buff mozz, and on and on. The quality just shows out. On to the other items: the mozzi sticks are on the salty side, but they hit the spot. The fries are coated in some sort of batter; they taste alright (who cares when the subs are so delish?). Pastas were fine - the kids liked the bolognese, even though it was just marinara with some flecks of meat tossed in. Desserts were a bit of a meh; cheesecake was passable - the carrot cake and chocolate cake were sweet Crisco-bakery duds. Bottom line: stick with the sandwiches, which are fan-f-ing-tastic.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here today after seeing positive reviews. I'm glad we did! The chicken broccoli alfredo is creamy and delicious. It comes with a side salad and a piece of bread. I wish there were more bread because it's so good. This is a huge portion size and it's difficult to even finish half, but it's exactly what I wanted!

Mike M.

Yelp
Fresh sandwiches, the best cold cuts, prepared meals, and Italian groceries , Bob's has it all and it's the best quality around. The sandwiches here are enormous feed at least two people. This is my go to place for groceries as well.

Yelp
This place is fantastic every Italian item you could ever want. The people were friendly I haven't even eaten this sub yet. Smells excellent have to go back to try the pastas.

Annabelle M.

Yelp
They're definitely not cheap with the amount of food. The steak itself tastes really good. Full of flavor. Reason for the 4 stars? I asked for cooked peppers and onions. They give you a whole big pepper in the sandwich. Usually these are cut up and not left whole. Also, it's so full of meat that it falls apart. The bread gets way too soggy trying to hold all the meat.

Teach G.

Yelp
Wow! I came for the first time today. The place is immaculately clean. I odered a large deluxe iltalian caprese. Hands down the best Italian sandwich I've ever had (no need to visit north end for a sandwich). Clearly, this place is run with love an d pride. Will definitely return when I'm in town.
google avatar

Yelp
I really love coming here, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, always asking if I need assistance right as I walk in. I've always come near closing time but all the signage indicates that this place can get busy during peak hours and parking could also be difficult to find. Prices may seem high but the frozen food items are very dense and the deli offerings are reasonably stacked. All their fresh homemade products list the ingredients and expiration dates.
google avatar

Seng L.

Yelp
Ordered buffalo chicken sub and got this. Check your food if you're ordering through the guy at the line.

Sharon F.

Yelp
I have had a cold Italian sub from here many times and it has been fine (hard to ruin) but today I was in the mood for meatballs. I do not recommend them. the sauce appears quite raw with big chunks of almost raw tomatoes. maybe some folks like it like that. I like mine simmered low and slow into a homogenous sauce. for $15!I was disappointed
google avatar

Cary C.

Yelp
This place is legit. Excellent sandwiches. Was in town for the ncaa tournament at Tufts. Can't go wrong with anything here
google avatar

Rima K.

Yelp
It's a shame they don't want to take any time to actually hear your order and get it right so you can actually enjoy the food lol the woman made me repeat myself 3-4 times and couldn't answer any questions I had lol. Definitely on the pricier side for what you get. I get it the charm is that attitude this old school Italian places are supposed to have but sheeesh borderline unpleasant experience almost hasslesome. My mozzarella sticks were good and crunchy. Loved the Italian wedding soup! Will update after I have my sandwich.

Brandy R.

Yelp
Visited Boston from LA after a long time away. Bob's was an incredible welcome back! The Italian and chicken cutlet subs were amazing and the service was excellent.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Pros: -Huge portions with a ton of meat -Online ordering (highly recommend to avoid the line, especially during a pandemic) -Seems to have a selection of Italian grocery treats Cons: -Line out the door around noon on Saturday, so unfortunately did not get a chance to browse their Italian snacks section, but I appreciated that the staff was trying to get people in and out quickly to reduce density. Hoping to go back another time that is less crowded (if that is ever the case)!

David K.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem. Subs are obscenely large and overstuffed and tough to keep together while you're eating them (if that's a complaint even, ha)...everything on the menu I've tried is amazing -- these guys are top notch. One of the very few reliable go-to's for this type of food!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
I would put Bob's steak sub up against any steak sub I have eaten on Earth. I'd put it up against all the ones I will eventually eat too. Since we're all friends I'll tell you this: I couldn't wait to eat the sub and ate it while driving. I spilled all over myself and I don't care. Oh and there's a whole Italian market of other awesome stuff. Got some antipasto salad with giant chunks of salami and such, fresh bread, and they were also amazing.

James C.

Yelp
If your not on a diet and love good food Take out only great Italian deli Just had a Italian sub with mozzarella To die for Fried chicken tenders with fries great Extra crispy French fries Steak tip dinner juicy and tender

Chuck J.

Yelp
We had Bob's cater 4 sandwich platters for a large group lunch work event. #1 Every one of our guests knew of Bob's, which was a crowd pleaser. #2 Tony was full of great suggestions without trying to up-sell me, and he accommodated a last minute change to our order that we asked for the night before #3 They had our catering order ready for pick up at the time we asked. #4 Presentation and quality of ingredients were outstanding. The cost per person was not terrible. Worth every penny. We'll be returning to Bob's in the future, these guys are pro's.

Yelp
THE BEST CHEESESTEAK IVE HAD IN SO LONG! I ordered delivery and the food got here quickly, and was still hot! Will definitely be back
google avatar

Yelp
Great cold cuts, cheeses, hot and cold subs, freshly made daily special Italian dishes made as ordered and desserts around Boston area.

Theodore M.

Yelp
Best subs in and around the city 5 star food, fresh food always.I never had a problem with the food or the service and I been eating there for 10 +years

Stev S.

Yelp
I don't see the appeal. $24 for a sandwich? Pretty darn expensive and underwhelming as far as flavor goes. Lots of other things on the menu that might be great but I couldn't help but to feel ripped off with my sandwich.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
The people of Bob's are wonderful. If you want a BEEFY A** SUB then this is your PLACE. For me personally it is way too much. I like me a thinner sub that I can take a bite of without prying open my jaw to fit some salami in. Meats, cheeses, etc. undoubtedly fresh, but once again too thick too much for me to enjoy.
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
Delicious delicious delicious. Really good sandwiches. Fun store. Can't recommend enough to just stop in and find some goodies.

R M.

Yelp
Biggest subs around with fresh high quality ingredients. Loved the steak and cheese. Next time I'm trying an Italian sub.
google avatar

Billieann K.

Yelp
Excellent Italian sub!! Arguably best Italian sub in the Boston area. Lots of Italian specialty foods and the staff is pleasant. The chicken piccata was only ok which is the reason for the 4 stars.

John M.

Yelp
Medford resident and long time fan of Bobs however recent visits have been disappointing. Latest order (jumbo chicken parm and jumbo meatball) weren't good at all. Chicken parm was bland, sauce wasn't good and meatballs tasted like processed food. Person I split the order with felt the exact same way. Now looking for a new Medford store with excellent sandwiches if anyone has recommendations. Thanks.

Yelp
Okay everyone rants about Bob's, right? It's an institution. I have tried several of their subs over the years- and honestly all were pretty meh and blasé except for the Italian sub. The Italian sub was fantastic don't get me wrong. I tried a few of their pasta dishes for the first time this week and, mio Dio! First let's start with the fact that I called the order in and the girl who answered clearly had no idea about Italian dishes. I asked for the frutti di mare fra diavolo with fusilli. I kid you not I repeated it four times and then finally she got it and said oh you want the tomato sauce one with seafood! ::facepalm:: yes, please. I should have just cancelled it then. I ordered it and while the portion was great- tell me why when I opened the lid the fusilli was wildly over cooked and clumped together like Mac n cheese?? I have never in my life seen fra diavolo sauce on pasta clump together like Mac n cheese. I tried it- it had no flavor, certainly wasn't spicy and the seafood tasted like it was frozen. Unless you're going there for an Italian sub, save your money.

C B.

Yelp
Very disgusted with the wrap of meatball sandwich. It was wrapped with foil. The foil had the "burn" mark and all the sauce all over it. It did not look healthy. Threw it away.
google avatar

Nat I.

Yelp
Bobs what happened? Prices are so high and the sandwich's are not as good as they use to be. I wish things would stay as good as they were once but that never seems to happen. Food is still good but not great and way overpriced.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Been a long time fan of Bobs!!! Went there Tuesday for a work event to pickup some trays of pizza. Pizza was delicious as always, however I had never tried their cookies! oh my FoodGASM! They were AMAZING I'll be back for their subs, salads, pizza .. but now most of all.. THEIR COOKIES!

Yelp
I am happy and lucky to be living in Medford as one has easy access to places like these. I had ordered the Special sandwich of the day - Veal Caprese on a sub as I am into anything which says caprese. Ok, maybe not everything - nowadays theres a lot of weird stuff out there. Coming back: It was tasty like hell. One of the best ones i had in a looooooong time or i dnt remember ( maybe i am growing old!!! Shucks). It was surely $12 but was great value as i had to cut it in half for a single dab. The veal was thick and juicy and the caprese was fresh and the combo was made in ,as she said, "in heaven". The meat and the sausages looked great and definitely had to buy. Cozy little store with parking generally available around the place ( might need you to be a lil creative at times). Now i need to get back and have more of the stuff.

Yelp
Fantastic. For years, ever since working throughout college where I had a co-op in the Norwood/Canton area was the first time I had a "real" Italian sub. Nowhere in the city of Boston came close. There was simply no love or craftsmanship from the numerous subshops all around the city. Except for one or two decent ones in Brookline. But what I had today was the real deal. It brought back faith in an ACTUAL Italian sandwich. You can taste the difference. After looking at Bob's online, it's no wonder they've been around for 85 years and can see them going for another 85 years plus. Real Italian. "If music to my ears" had a gastronomic equivalent, the deluxe Italian seasame roll with a variety of hots definitely is it. Grazie!
google avatar

Robin D.

Yelp
The absolute best steak and cheese sandwich probably in the whole state of Massachusetts!
google avatar

S K.

Yelp
Bob's is usually great but something was off tonight. I ordered through Grubhub and delivery was fast (as usual), but my order was not up to par. Not sure if they hired someone new or changed the way they make the sandwiches, but it was not as good as it usually it. Onion rings - The breading was different, smoother instead of crumbly. Maybe they were experimenting with a new batter? Whatever it was, the previous batter was better. Onion slices this time were too thin and the batter layer was too thick. House Italian Deli sandwich - I ordered (and paid extra for) a large braided roll, but got a plain sub roll instead. Very stingy with the toppings (lettuce, pickle, onion, tomato, mayo) and added oil even though I didn't ask for it. Tuna Salad sandwich - Also stingy with the toppings. Almost no pickle, tomato, onion. The sandwich was 95% tuna salad and 5% toppings, where before it was closer to 80/20. Hopefully this was a one-off blip. Please go back to the way the food was before!

Yelp
Everything we've tried so far has been absolutely delicious! The sandwiches are amazing. Generous portions and fast service.

Yelp
Wow! Move over Dave's Fresh Pasta, Bob's is in the building! We picked up some dinner ingredients from Bob's last night: fresh fettuccine, cavatappi, marinara sauce, and a cannoli. Everything was divine. The pasta was packaged generously and decently priced. Bob's is a mix between a take out restaurant and an Italian grocery store. The style is a bit like Eataly but obviously not as classy. Staff is very helpful and friendly. We already cooked and ate all our purchases from Bob's and couldn't be happier. The pasta was out of this world!!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Okay, so this is a good sandwich spot. I got a small deluxe italian (for the sesame braided roll) and it was solid. However, there were a few negatives; hence the four stars. But first the positives: Ordered online and there was an extremely efficient pick-up situation going on with a guy by the door who had all the bags and was taking names. Overall, the sub was good, well-seasoned, and proportioned. And big...and good bread. My main negative was that there were stems on the hot cherry peppers and the semi lack of meat. I say semi lack of meat because I work in Boston and there are some sub shops there where you get so much bang for the buck. But here everything was seasoned nice and tasted great. Overall I'd say 8.5/10.
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
Been ordering food from Bob's my whole life. The steak and cheese subs are perfection! Highly recommend
google avatar

Sandy Z.

Yelp
This place is like heaven! All sorts of pastas and sandwiches are served freshly here! Amazing flavors and services. I feel their fresh pasta could be a bit pricey but everything else is awesome! Definitely recommend you to go if you are a bit fan of Italian pasta and sandwiches!

Yelp
Great food and giant menu, plenty of options. Highly recommend chicken park of the steak tip sub.
