When I was a child, I used to love going to the butcher. It always meant a stitch of jerky and a peperoni stick. Not only that, I knew enough meet was going in the freezer that we would be eating burgers, ribs and dogs for the foreseeable future.
Today, I'm wondering what the point is. Costco has grass-fed steaks cheaper than lesser quality meat at your local grocer. There is more jerky and pepperoni to choose from these days than ever (Even though prepackaged meat snacks are no competition) and most local markets have gourmet sausages and smoked meats to save you the trouble of making the drive to one of the few remaining meat markets.
Some time ago, my mom told me about Bob's. At this point, it must have bee about 20 years. I think ownership has changed as no one there matches the description she gave of the staff. I purchased a variety of smoked and fresh meats.
The best thing I got was a bag of bones for my dog. I think the bones are for broth, but I just threw one in the yard and let my dog go to work. I tried the jerky and Landjagers. The jerky was really good, it reminded me of the jerky I got from Stewart Meats at Pike Place. The Landjagers taste like the lanadjagers I have had everywhere else. I suspect these smoked treats are done in bulk and bought through a wholesaler. I got Texas Hotlinks and Smokes Beef Hotlinks. My dad is from Houston, so I know what a Texas link tastes like. I suspect there is a Texas Idaho, cause these links had no flavor or heat. The smoked beef link was much better, but still no heat. The ground beef was fresh and a good price. For an area like Columbia City were large grocery stores really don't exist, I think this place is a welcome trading post for any carnivore.
I'd love to see a butcher in every community, but it's just so easy to get good meat in more places today. Even if you don't brave the Costco line, some will go to Whole Foods, PCC or whatever trendy neighborhood pop up that exists. I don't know about Amazon fresh, but if they offered resh grass fed meat I suspect those trucks would run non stop.
I have been here twice, the first time service was impersonal, flat and uninspired. For my second visit, the gentleman was super friendly, talkative and pleasant.
My suggestion for these guys would be to make sure their sausages live up to their names and expectation. A grocery store hot link should not have more flavor and heat than one I get at a meat market. I get that some people can take the heat, but that is what mild links are for. Call it hot, it better be hot and never put Texas on anything that doesn't bring the heat.
This place is okay, but I need something more, something special, something that reminds me that there is a reason you need to be here instead of a Costco.
