"The Dish: Szechuan-style beef stew noodle soup  Anything is a safe bet to cure a killer hangover at this Rockville spot, but this item in particular stands out as a hidden gem. The Szechuan-style beef noodle soup is huge, with layers of tender beef tucked between thick noodles, scallions, and cilantro swimming in a bowl of fiery, flavorful broth." - Eater Staff, Kalina Newman, Stephanie Carter

We arrived in the morning during the weekend and saw a line waiting. The food was fine though - the dumplings were not the best but fine. The Dan Dan noodle was not what I expected - felt more like a Chinese version of tsukemen. The deep fried dumplings were also just so-so. The portion was small but it was not too overpriced.

I went here with my friend and two people he was showing around town. Getting dim sum is the perfect way to get to know others, but only if you’re all comfortable sharing food! All the dishes we ordered were very delicious. My favorites were the eggplant, green beans, and veggie steamed buns (I’m vegetarian). The veggie steamed buns were among some of the best vegetarian buns I’ve ever had. Definitely recommend this place! Very very delicious Chinese food.

Google
Got a To-go order from here for the first time. We got a version of general tso's but called something else, it was a little bit dry. We got the beef and broccoli, it was really good, the beef was tender and we got the sweet and sour pork chops. They were really good. The only thing I could say about them is that I got several bone fragments in the pork chops. The flavor was great though on all the dishes

Google
This is a nice place. We are told that this place is well known for quality. The menu variety is not like most Chinese restaurants. It is quite varied. We went with others who ordered for the whole table so we didn't really get what me might have on our own. However the food was quite delicious and very hot as each food item is brought to your table as soon as it is ready. We will need to try this place again and get what we would like.

Had some business in Silver Spring and found Bobs in google maps. Super glad I did! Busy at lunch time so you may need to wait but food is served fresh and fast. Ordered as much as we could within reason, loved it all! The spicy dumplings were delicious and the kung pao is possibly the best I’ve ever had. Also, have to try the dim sum, we tried the pork. Definitely recommend stopping in for some great food!

Google
came for the XLB soup dumplings and easily best in the area. Their other dishes also never disappoint-faves are crispy beef & black pepper. Looks like they are now expanding which is seat since they don't take reservations and its highly popular! Very small dining room compared to demand but the food comes pretty quick so turnaround time isn't too bad and the food is worth the wait

You will enjoy thoroughly the DMV-famous legendary Shanghainese gastronomy here at Bob’s Shanghai! Tremendous food selection and series of delicious dishes must excite you here. I’d say spicy food pork wanton is hands down the best dish among the ones I’ve tried. The chili oil and Chinese soy sauce create serendipitous flavors. I’d also mark the Bob’s Shanghai original soup dumplings. The wave of umami wrapped by the dumpling just hits different especially when you eat it with a piece of ginger and a couple of drops of Chinese vinegar. Bob’s Shanghai 66 is a legendary Rockville restaurant!

Google
It was our first time here, but we liked what we ordered. Stir fried Shanghai noodles, fried rice, crispy pork chop, and mini sesame balls. Very tasty, well seasoned, crispy and crunchy when it's supposed to be. Service was efficient. We'll come back to try the other dishes.

Yelp
Bob's flavors are out of this world! Bob's may be a little pricier than other local businesses in Rockville, however their portion size and quality completely justifies it. If you are going to Bob's you MUST get their dumplings. They are well known for their dumplings and they are stunning as well as flavorful. Their vegetable dumpling is stuffed with filling that has both tofu and veggies. Additionally their blend of spices is magical and they are the most delicious vegetable dumplings you will find in Montgomery County. Just their one order of vegetable dumplings, which only comes with four dumplings, could be considered a meal either how much filling is in each dumpling. Bob's is very vegan friendly. I was told that their vegetarian dishes do not contain fish sauce so you do not have to ask for entrees to be modified. Their spicy tofu and their KP (Kung Pao) tofu are two of my favorite meals. Both prepare the tofu perfectly, have great savory and spicy flavors, and come with enough food for three meals. Bob's always has a dinner rush so be prepared to wait for a table if you are visiting on Friday night or the weekend. Their food is well worth the wait and their online ordering for pickup system is smooth and worth the drive.

Yelp
A local favorite, if you are ever craving Chinese Food this place has some of the best in the entire DMV. Parking is a tad limited so I'd try to come here at a time when it's not too busy. Unfortunately I was here for lunch but I also did hear that the Dim Sum menu is also good. Walking in is a very spacious room filled with tables. When I went inside, there was only another patreon so I may have went when it was slow. The waiter comes by and drops off tea for me which is always great to have. You can also request for water too. The menu is big and has a lot of options to select from. You get a marker and you just check off how much you want and they just place the order in. It's very convenient. I got Pork XLB (Xiaolongbao) as I heard from my friends the soup dumplings are amazing here. They did not disappoint! When they came out, they were moderately sized and bigger compared to the other XLBs I had in other places. As always, biting the top and slurping the soup inside the dumplings then adding the soy sauce/vinegar/ginger sauce it's always perfect. This was some of the best I had. My main course was the Yunnan Spicy Beef Rice Noodle Soup (N05). You can get the choice of either lamb or beef but I chose beef. This dish came out quick and I was intimidated by how red the dish is. They were not kidding as this soup was filled with chilies and peppercorn. If you know how numbing spicy is, this is a slight spicy compared to Mala Spicy which will be a true test for your mouth. The noodles were firm and were light to slurp while the meat soaked in the spicy soup it complimented each other all while adding spice. If you think you can handle spicy, this was a dish that made my nose run! Ask for napkins if you can. The food came out fast, service I would say it's something that you don't expect at Chinese restaurants but I was able to flag down someone if I need something. Honestly I'd want to come back here to try out their other dishes. This is a place worth checking out at!

Yelp
Bob's Shanghai hits the spot, consistently good food. The service is nothing to sneeze at, they don't have a soda fountain (saves money that way) but do have a drink cooler with your standard drinks in it if you wish. As is typical of popular restaurants, your entire party needs to be present, and they don't take reservations. 10% cash discount if you pay in cash. It seems like they changed their entranceway from before, now the first thing you see when you enter the restaurant is a glass window with the workers making your dim sum. Yum! Certainly makes for good viewing while you're waiting for seating. And not to mention the smells wafting from the main dining area while you wait... All that being said, Bob's Shanghai is consistently good, but there's a couple things that can make it great though - if they had more dishes of Shanghai origin on the menu, if their scallion pancakes were laminated to have layers.

Yelp
TL;DR: Soup Dumplings. Vibe: Came here on a Friday early evening and was able to snag a table. It was packed and a constant flow of people coming in and out. Service: You mark what you want on a menu with an expo marker. Their menu is quite extensive, so there is a lot to choose from and something for everyone. Food comes out fast and hot. FOOD: ~Pork XLB (4.5/5): The soup was so good. The wrapper was a little thick in spots, but not too terrible. The filling was packed, but it could have used like a grain of salt. With the soy vinegar though, it was fine. ~Beef and tendon noodle soup (3.8/5): soup and noodles were decent. There was a very small portion of meat. Have had better elsewhere. ~Shrimp toast (2/5): too greasy and almost burnt ~Spicy pork wontons (4.5/5): love chili oil wontons! The sauce was nice and spicy, the wontons wrapper at the top was a little thick, but overall very good ~Thai tea (3.9/5): good portion size, wanted a little more tea flavor and less sweet. Would definitely come back here for the XLB alone and maybe try some other items on their menu.

Yelp
I came here after hiking at Great Falls nearby so I was super hungry. Parking is available for 90 mins in the lot that was super open on a Tuesday lunch hour. I was seated immediately and given the menu + marker to write out the quantity of which item I wanted to order onto the menu next to the item. I opted for dim sum as this is what I was in the mood for. I had been recommended this restaurant by a local friend who is from Rockville and I had hoped they had non-pork meat options as I don't eat pork so I stuck to those. Admittedly, those are the less popular food items in dim sum overall so I think my experience makes sense as a result. No egg tarts here for dessert options which I was saddened by. My friend who recommended me this spot did note that the food quality varies and isn't consistent. They did give out free hot green tea as a drink which I did appreciate. Veggie dumplings 4/5, tastes eggplant-y, but warm and filling Beef curry bao buns 3/5, I didn't like that the meat was in patty form for the beef but I liked the onion within it. This had some seasoning so it wasn't bland but I wouldn't order again because I really did not like the meat to be in patty form. Chicken soup dumplings 4.5/5, this is what I was most looking forward to. The chicken was not super seasoned but the soup is excellent so I was pleased with these. Chicken sticky rice wrap 1/5, I really did not click with this. I'm used to a stick rice wrap having fish like abalone but the chicken in this was overcooked and dry as a result, and the stick rice itself tasted nutty?? This was just odd for me and tasted like no other sticky rice I have ever had.

Yelp
I finally made it out here!! Parking sucks!! We ordered a few items from the dim sum menu and some from the main. We're used to eating Cantonese style dim sum so most of the items we enjoyed were not served here. Overall it's not bad, my favorite dish was the spicy tofu. Crispy, airy and of course spicy. Had a unique taste and crunch to it. I would definitely come back to try other menu items, they look delish.

Yelp
Every time we have a craving for soup dumplings, we don't have to think about where to get them-- it's always at Bob's Shanghai! This place has been a popular Taiwanese food destination for years! When we started going, the place was smaller and only took cash! With the small expansion and acceptance of credit cards it seems that they're even busier than they used to be! The place is always busy during lunchtime. Clean and no-fuss, the walls are adorned with framed magazine/newspaper accolades, some framed drawings and drink "ads," a list of some specials (which thankfully, have an English translation-- unlike in some Asian restaurants where there is no translation so you might think you're not in on some secret fabulous dish ) and a virtual photo album of some featured dishes. Service is prompt, friendly and helpful. We had some restrictions which they were able to accommodate. During our last visit, we had the Pork Soup Dumplings, the Pork and Leek steamed Dumplings, the scallion pancake, the orange chicken and the sizzling flounder with onions. Unfortunately, they were out of their sautéed pea shoots! Everything was good although the two main courses were a tad too sweet and the sauce too gooey (didn't affect the taste but it was a little too much cornstarch). We've had many other items in the past and they are always good! The other new addition to the restaurant is that they now offer some of their "tapas" frozen and ready-to-cook at home! Now, if you've never had soup dumplings-- it is an Asian dumpling that is steamed with a little broth inside it. Some people might dip them in a vinegary dip but you can eat them plain. To eat them, my suggestion is to make a hole on the soup dumpling wrapper and sip the soup that's inside the wrapper. Then, eat the dumpling in two bites. They're kind of big for one bite!

Yelp
One of my go-to chinese restaurants. The food selection is big enough that you will always be trying something new when you go, plus they have some of the best soup dumplings in the area! Clean restaurant, friendly staff, and once again the best dumplings! The spicy and salt pork is also a go-to item for me. You must try it out.

Nora B.

Yelp
The soup dumplings were average at best.. They were quite chewy and not super flavorful, plus the accompanying sauce was not that great. Service was very fast though! The ambiance was fairly chill and relaxed. (10/23/24)

Yelp
A night out of experimenting dim sum. We went to Bob's Loved a huge selection of tasty dishes as we had about 7. Great food, friendly service, good prices. I'll be back!

David N.

Yelp
My friends and I were craving Chinese food and decided to try this place based on recommendations. Despite ordering a variety of items, most of them were disappointing. They offer dim sum here, and I ordered one of my favorites, Har Gow, but the skin was too thick and the shrimp inside wasn't great. Another letdown was the Dan Dan Noodles, which didn't taste like any I've had before and had an odd noodle choice. On a positive note, I enjoyed the fresh watermelon drink and the spicy oil wonton dumplings.

Joseline M.

Yelp
Are you craving the best soup dumplings in Maryland? Good prices? Then you HAVE to go to Bob's Shanghai 66. We got 3 items the beef noodles, soup dumplings and shu mai. The soup dumplings is what they are known for and of course they did not disappoint! They are well balanced in flavor, full of soup and good size. They are my favorite in the whole state. The beef noodles were spicy but so good! The meat was tender and the portion was perfect for 2 people but if you don't like spicy food then these will definitely be too spicy for you! Shu mai was great as well, nothing to write home about but still a very solid item in their menu. Make sure you get there with enough time to wait for a table because they are always busy! Service can be a bit slow but that's expected when they have a full house and only a few people to serve but overall it is a MUST visit spot!

Peggy L.

Yelp
So excited to get a table without waiting too long!! The service was superb and efficient like you'd expect from any Asian restaurants. Of course it comes with a hot pot of tea. Great start as we dive in for a dinner! Soup pork dumplings - very juicy and wonderful when goes with vinegar, soy sauce and minced ginger! A bit different than I've had around like the wrapping is a bit little thicker than usual but still great as it held everything inside without falling apart! Shrimp and pork shumai - not too bad, good tasting but it is a huge bite. Bigger than shumais I've used to. Nothings wrong with that as it's still good! Steamed donut with condensed milk - very good but not sweet. Typical Asian dessert where it is subtle good but even better with condensed milk on! I'd drizzled it all over on that steam donut. Dan Dan noodle - it is the dish of the champion! It's spicy but so delicious with all flavors bursting in your mouth along with ground beef, sliced cucumber and perfect al dente noodles combined! I'd order this again next time!!! String beans with garlic - excellent side dish of all time! It couldn't go wrong anytime and it was delicious. We would inhale all of it in a few minutes. It's not too spicy for me as Szechuan pepper brings some flavors out within this dish!

Yelp
I haven't been to Bob Shanghai in a few years and they've moved things around with the entrance. When we arrived, it was not busy, but it started to become very crowded. Once we left and people were waiting outside We ordered the pork pan fried dumplings and they were very good. We also ordered Shanghai noodles and watercress. My friend who was with me, explained that the stalks for the Watercrest were very large because it was older that youwant the smaller ones. I have to say that the watercress was tasty. I enjoyed it. The service was efficient. We found out that you could get a discount if you paid cash. I do recommend coming here. I forgot to mention we ordered the soup dumplings as well. They stick to the mesh container, but were very tasty.

Alex D.

Yelp
I was in the area and searching for lunch options when I came across this restaurant. Looking at the menu, I knew that I was going to love this place. It was super busy on a Saturday around 12:30, but worth the 15 minute wait. I ordered the soup dumplings and Shanghai noodles and they were absolutely delicious. Will definitely be recommending this place to others :)

Chemutai S.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday around 6 and the place was very busy. Luckily there wasn't a wait to be seated. The tables are pretty close together and the place is quite loud. Service was quick and efficient, you have to flag down a waitress if you need anything but they were very friendly. I ordered the pan fried pork dumplings, pork soup dumplings, orange chicken, and combo Shanghai noodles. The menu had a nice variety. Food came out very quickly. The noodles and orange chicken were both solid. Pan fried dumplings were super crispy, just how I like them! The soup dumplings were my favorite thing I ordered and definitely worth going back for. Overall I enjoyed my experience and definitely recommend trying their dumplings.

Steven T.

Yelp
Made the trip to Rockville for what are supposedly the best soup dumplings in the DMV. This shop was super authentic and no frills. The soup dumplings definitely lived up to the hype. Great broth, thin wrappers, and very flavorful. The noodles were pretty good also, but I wish they were a bit more al dente. Overall great place to satisfy your soup dumpling cravings! My favorite was the Pork and Crab Soup Dumplings! Apps: Pork and Pork/Crab Soup Dumplings Entrees: Beef Noodle Soup and Dan Dan Noodles

Anye S.

Yelp
5 stars for the XLB alone, these are definitely the best I've had in a really long time (we ordered the crab/pork variety). We also ordered a scallion pancake and pan friend pork buns. Both of these were very good, probably 4 star. The pork buns were more like dumpling pork than bbq pork, which isn't bad though I think my husband was expecting the bbq pork. I also ordered a milk tea which was a 5 star milk tea both in taste and size to cost ratio, much more tea than I get at some of the dedicated shops. We got here before 6pm on a Friday and it was busy but not completely full, by the time we left there was a line. The prices here aren't as low as some of the other places but the quality is there, and the food was very filling. It's still a less pricy meal than many other cuisines. I can't wait to come back and eat my way around the menu, but always with some XLB! -- Update - came back again and tried more stuff! Chef's Special Pork Fried Dumplings - 5 star. Delicious filling. My husband's favorite of the night Spicy Pork Wontons - 5 star. The chili broth on these is out of this world good. This is a dish I always order whenever I see it on the menu and this is the best version yet. Chicken & Shrimp XLB - 4 star. These didn't have as much soup as the crab/pork and the texture of the filling was more like a shumai. I love shumai, but it isn't the best XLB they have. Still very tasty. Kimchi - 4 star. Not like a Korean kimchi, this is a slightly sweet pickled cabbage. Very tasty. Curry Beef Buns - 3.5 star. Good, but more subtle than we like with the curry. There was just a small amount of beef in each bun. I prefer a better meat to puff ratio. Matcha green milk tea - My friend ordered this and said it was very grainy. Matcha is of course made with powder but it's not supposed to taste grainy. I won't order this one, but I had another black milk tea and it was perfect. At 6pm on Saturday they were packed out, it was about a 20 minute wait for a table for 3. Come early!

Yelp
First time eating at Bob's Shanghai, except I had to do takeout since I was in a rush. I ordered the chicken soup dumpling and 3 piece pork buns, and they were fantastic! Usually when I do take out the soup dumplings stick together and don't contain much soup, but this wasn't the case here. It was fresh, they made it in 10 minutes and the pork bun were also so tasty. The bun was chewy and so flavorful inside. Service was nice as they were quick to respond and put in my order. It's also big inside, so it has a nice interior.

Jim N.

Yelp
No place like it in DC area that I have found in terms of dumplings. Scallion pancakes were alsovery good. Terrible beer selection. Only two Mediocre. It seemed like waitress didn't care if we were there or not. Was not proactive about even the basics like clearing dirty dishes. We were there late afternoon. Quiet. Pretty basic Chinese restaurant atmosphere. Dull.

Micaela W.

Yelp
Ordered for takeout but the restaurant itself is a simple place with a window to watch people make dumplings skins in the front! The beef noodle soup broth was amazing and had generous cuts of beef and a good amount of veggies. I wish the noodles were a little chewier/springy. XLB was decent but not mind blowing (if you're used to DTF XLB this one had thicker dumpling skin and the pork wasn't as salty. I appreciate that the scallion pancakes were homemade and not just the store bought kinds but note that this is the denser pancake and not the super flakey one. Overall decent place

Samantha G.

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for several years. The food is great, especially the pork xlb. Some other notable dishes are pan fried pork buns, spicy pork wontons, scallion pancake, Sichuan string beans, and stir fried shanghai noodles. The new renovations are also really nice. I would recommend this place!

Joanne C.

Yelp
I always come here for the XLB, it's my favorite dish that I forget to take photos! We also enjoyed the Singaporean noodles and the pork belly dish! The flavors are always on point. Tight seating due to how popular the place is. It's hard to linger and chat because how the wait list, so plan to get some boba after to continue the great convos!

Yelp
I finally.... FINALLY made it to Bob's for their XLB! It's been a long time coming. I had to go to Congressional to restock my fish tank, so this was the perfect opportunity. It was a Sunday afternoon, and it was indeed busy. But there were still open tables, and being by myself, getting seated was no challenge at all. Almost immediately, I received two menus and a pot of tea. It was hot outside, but I drank that tea anyway! One menu had drinks and the buns, and the other had their appetizers and all other food options. I only ever hear of people talk about their buns, but they have a LOT of food. And I peeped a lot of it coming out of the kitchen, and it looked fantastic. I received a pencil with the menus, so I could mark off what I wanted. I opted for 12 XLB -- 6 crab/pork, 6 chicken/shrimp, coming to about $27. I have had red bean mochi and red bean pudding, but the smoothie caught my attention and I decided to order that as well. The smoothie came out relatively fast and it was so refreshing for the hot day! It wasn't too sweet, and now I've learned that I'm a red bean fan. It wasn't too long before the buns came out -- stacked and covered, served with a sauce. I was so excited. I learned from my first time having soup dumplings not to bite them whole like I would normally... last time I burned my mouth LOL! I took a small bite initially and loved the burst of flavor. Inevitably, some got wasted from spillage, but I was able to soak some back up. Usually, something like 12 dumplings would be light work, but I was STUFFED by the time I finished these. It might've also been that smoothie. And it was hard to pick a fav between the two... I might've liked the crab/pork slightly more? Either way, I enjoyed everything and I'm excited to return and explore more of the menu. Lots of reviews from folks are from so long ago... I can't help but wonder how it compares to back then?

Jackie W.

Yelp
Good: Homemade pork XLB Sliced potato and pepper Pan fried pork buns Solid: Leek pork dumplings Sticky rice in leaf sesame noodles Mushroom pork shumai Pass: scallion pancakes To try: Pork stir fried rice cake Beef With long horn peppers Leek fried crescent

William H.

Yelp
I've been a long time fan of Bob's. Loved their open fried dumplings and the soup bao. Other than those, my usual go to is the beef noodle soup, rice noodle dish, and spicy wonton. Recently, I tried their salt and pepper flounder, which was delicious. Good amount of S&P with not too heavy of a coating. I also got the string bean but unfortunately it was very stringy. The restaurant is nothing fancy and the service is always good. If you are in the mood for real Chinese food, go to Bob's

Brittany Anne O.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. The food, the service and did I mention the food? We ordered shanghai noodles, soup dumplings and Chang du chicken. The noodles had a great bite and lots of chicken and veggies mixed in. The dumplings had great flavor with a good amount of filing. The chicken was crispy and extra spicy. We were impressed by the large portions and glad to see how quick the food came out to our table. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The restaurant itself has limited decorations with an overall vibe of no nonsense. The food is well worth the trip! Highly recommend!

Jack L.

Yelp
Although tucked away in a modest strip mall, Bob's Shanghai offers a cozy, no-frills atmosphere that focuses on delivering rich, flavorful dishes. The soup dumplings were definitely the star of the dinner, boasting a delicate, thin wrapper filled with savory broth and tender pork--an absolute must-try. The menu features a range of traditional Chinese dishes like pan-fried buns and "Cheng-Du" chicken. The service was fairly efficient since you order by marking up a menu and the food was delivered to the table very quickly . Since we heard the restaurant can get crowded, especially during peak hours, we went early to beat the dinner rush and were seated immediately. The prices were quite reasonable, making it a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family. Bob's Shanghai 66 delivers a more than satisfying experience and we will definitely be back for more soup dumplings!

Britney B.

Yelp
It's been a while since I stepped foot in this restaurant, but I am glad they are still doing well and have even expanded the dining space. As always, the parking lot has limited spots, especially during busier hours. You can't find better soup dumplings (XLB) than at Bob's! The XLB contains such a flavorful filling and more soup than you can ask for. All the other food items I ordered were delicious as well. My personal favorites included the Scallion Pancake and the Crispy Beef. I just wished the noodles with minced meat tasted better, as it was too bland for my liking. Otherwise, great service and dishes arrived in a timely manner. I also enjoyed the self-ordering process with the paper menu and pencil.

Kathryn J.

Yelp
I come with holiday tips! Their website says to order take out up to 90 minutes in advance on holidays- take it seriously! I came today at 1:30pm on Christmas and there was a line out the door! The cashier advised people looking to dine in that the wait was at least an hour. Be prepared on the holidays! That being said, Bob's is popular for a reason! Their dim sum is so fun to have with a big group. You can try a bunch of dishes and share. Most recently I got takeout, and I was so glad that everything traveled well. It was labeled, too, so we didn't have to guess. The soup dumplings (XLB) are my favorite, and you can try a few different kinds here. I loved the scallion pancakes, which weren't greasy but instead were crispy and filling. Someone else got a hot noodle dish that was too spicy for me but so good! Bob's is an excellent dim sum restaurant and worth your visit.

The line was out the door so I was determined to figure out why! So glad that I did. The soup dumplings were amazing. Extremely flavorful and filling. Also ordered the orange chicken and fried rice (without vegetables). The restaurant was pretty big but even with the size of the place, it was no match for the crowd in line waiting to get dumplings. My kids loved the food so much so we went back the same week. Definitely be prepared for longer lines on the weekend. They do offer parking, it a smaller lot, but parking is available.

Yelp
The soup dumpling here is spotted on, they have more soup dumplings options than the one in NYC. Compare to the same restaurant name in NYC, this location has less dumplings (6 dumplings per order while the nyc has 8 dumplings per order), but this location definitely has better taste. We were lucky that we did not have to wait for the table, we got in right away. The restaurant is crowded and the customer service is okay. Would recommend to stop by if you are around.

Yelp
First review of 2024! So I've been coming to Bob's Shanghai for years now. Despite being in Rockville, Maryland, I don't mind the interstate trip to grab some quality soup dumplings. NoVA just doesn't have anything that's remotely comparable to the quality, value, and taste of the the XLB of Bob's. Decided to come here for a post massage meal with my mom. We got here around 6 pm and there was quite a wait. The hostess estimated about a 30 minute wait, and it was pretty accurate as we waited a little over 40 mins. The restaurant underwent a renovation, and now the entrance and waiting/pickup area is now to the left of the restaurant/store front. Apparently, Bob's bought out the neighboring jewelry store. This was nice because now there is a waiting area by the relocated restrooms. The food was excellent as usual. We were given menus and pencils when we were assigned a number while waiting, so ordering was a breeze. Checking out was also easy. If you pay cash you get a discount. I gotta say that this was the busiest that I have seen Bob's Shanghai, with a bunch of diverse customers in the restaurant. I'll be back, but probably on a less busy day. Best XLB soup dumplings in the DMV area!

Yelp
Their soup dumplings are fantastic! Best I've had yet in the DMV area. I wouldn't mind going back to try other items but I'll go with lower expectations this time since I wasn't impressed with a few of the other dishes we tried. Despite the fail on most of the dishes I'm giving this place 4* for their soup dumplings and the potential of their other items. What we got: Edamame and greens - 3* nothing impressive. Didn't love the taste of the greens. Donut fried - 4* this was a fun one. Buns - 3* not impressed Zongzi - 3* forgot to take a picture. It came out cold in the middle so they replaced it for us. It was nostalgic for me but not as good as I remember them being. Soup dumplings - 4.5* so good! Not the best I've ever had but very delicious. Dumplings - 3.5* they were good Bean curd, pepper, pork - 2* I was really excited for this one as it was similar to a dish I ate in China. Unfortunately it was super heavy on the bean curd, very light on the meat, and really not that great. The peppers added a nice taste but not enough to save this dish in my opinion. Chicken & noodles - 3* nothing impressive.

Yelp
This is an iconic restaurant that we have been wanting to go to for a long time. We went for lunch. Even before noon the restaurant was full but we were lucky to score a table for 5 quickly. The soups - vegetable soup, egg drop soup, hot and sour soup. Kung pao tofu, shrimp kung pao, chicken noodles, fried rice, soup dumplings, were so tasty. The portions are very generous and everyone seems to pitch in to make your food experience great . It's not a tablecloth service, ambiance is bare minimal yet comfortable. The ordering is a little funky. You use a marker to mark the quantity and also circle the meat you want. Nice to see that they serve Tsing Tao beer.

Yelp
Tried the sweet and sour pork chop, pork XLB, ha cao (shrimp dumplings), and ma po tofu sweet and sour pork chop was incredibly tender, almost like chicken thigh. the sauce was slightly overwhelming if you only eat this dish, but it's great for sharing/family style. 9/10 pork XLB was slightly pricey, but pretty good quality. tastes great with the vinegar. 8/10 ha cao had little shrimp and the wrapper was not chewy - 5.5/10 the ma po tofu was fairly different from ones i've had before. this one had a slight gelatinous texture to it and didn't have ground pork. there was a good amount of spice (medium), and the tofu was very soft. 6/10 service and ambiance felt like a normal Chinese american restaurant

Yelp
Best soup dumplings in the DMV! I have been ordering carrot here for years and it looks like the space was recently renovated allowing for more occupancy. Unfortunately there is limited parking in the area so keep that in mind.

Yelp
Came here for the first time for lunch on a weekend with a group of friends. We ordered their pigs ear, vegan kaofu, chili bamboo, chives crescent pocket, mapo tofu, crab and pork soup dumplings and veggie dumplings. Total came out to approximately $120 (not including tip). What's hot - Menu variety. I was very happy to see chives crescent pockets, pig ears, and tea eggs on their menu. They have a very good variety, especially when it comes to Taiwanese food. - Quality. Delicious. My favorite was probably the pig ear, because it was well marinated. One of my friends especially loved their vegan kaofu. Their soup dumplings were fragrant and flavorful. Their mapo tofu is a bit more soupy than what the texture should be. Their dumpling peel could be a bit thinner, but understand that I've had soup dumplings overseas in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, where the quality can't be beat. - Service. Quick and efficient. All the food comes out within a very reasonable time. - Cost. Reasonable, especially for the portions and quality. - Payment method. If you pay cash, they'll give you a 10% discount. - Parking. There is a parking lot in the immediate plaza, but be aware there's a time limit. We exceeded our time limit and were fortunate not to get penalized. As such, I don't know how strict they are in enforcing the parking restrictions. - Location. Easy to find and conveniently located to other shops, cafes and restaurants, as well. After lunch, my friends and I walked a couple blocks away to get matcha dessert. What's not - Menu items. As I previously explained, their menu is quite extensive, but it's disappointing they don't have certain dishes, like chicken feet. - Wait time. This place appears to be popular. My friends and I arrived right when the restaurant opens at 11am, so we were able to get a table. Not very long after we arrived, probably less than 30 minutes, all the tables were taken and there appeared to be a decent line. As such, be prepared to arrive early; wait in line, and/or; order takeaway, which all depends on how hungry you may be. Final answer Definitely plan on returning.

Yelp
Soup dumplings represent a constant craving for my me and my wife, and the DMV unfortunately is kind of weak regarding options for these juicy delights. Bob's Shanghai in Rockville serves the best xia long bao in the area, and is subsequently our go-to option when the craving for these unique dim sum hits. Soup dumplings here arrive 6 to an order. We usually opt for an order each of the standard pork and the pork and crab varieties, though other options such as chicken are available as well. The skins here obtain the ideal balance of thinness and doughy chew, and encase a respectable amount of savory soup and juicy meat. The quality of the XLB here tastes on par to famous places we have visited in NY, NJ, and Philly. While we dig the soup dumplings, the pan fried buns steal the show. An order of these yields three, fist-sized rounds comprising a fluffy, slightly sweet dough with a perfectly crisp bottom encasing a savory pork filling. The resulting bite brings a perfect contrast of both texture and taste. We like these so much, during a recent meal, we spontaneously ordered a second serving rather to round out our lunch. The restaurant gets crowded with groups large and small, so I advise arriving near opening time to avoid a wait (especially on weekends). Prices are fair for the area, and a decent discount is available when paying with cash. While we wish good soup dumplings existed on the VA side of the DC suburbs, we will gladly make the trek to Rockville when the craving for quality buns strikes.

Yelp
The food was good. The dishes are delicious. The drinks are refreshing. We got there around 12:30 pm. I was expecting to have to wait from earlier experience, however, the restaurant has expanded its size. Previous experience was not as good because of the long wait, glad to see the renovation has expanded the space. More spacious now, but still busy with lots of customers.

Yelp
I brought my Chinese parents to try my authentic Chinese cuisine in Rockville. My and my dad's favorite was the spicy fried tofu. My mom liked the cumin lamb the best. While I liked the duck blood, the intestines smelled really strong and the vegetables were too salty. I thought the food was decent, and my parents have very high standards since they're from China. It wasn't anything mindblowing, but it was good enough. Lot of options on the menu to try!

Yelp
Great place to go for comfort Chinese food. I come here all the time and love bringing my friends from out of town here. Service is very fast and even if there's a wait the turnover is super super quick so it's worth waiting for. The food is amazing, this is a must try place in maryland

Yelp
About a 1-1.5: Not sure if Bob's Shanghai switched or hired a new chef, but the food hasn't been consistent nor the same. We came here recently and ordered our usual: + Spicy Chicken Wontons (A12B) - the spicy chili sauce barely had any flavor, and the wontons themselves were barely warmed through +Beef with Long Horn Pepper (B03) - the sliced beef is usually tender with a slight crisp edge; however, this dish was an awful mess of mushiness, from both the meat and the peppers; the long horn peppers, which usually give this dish a nice kick, hardly had any spiciness to it +the Shrimp and Chicken XLB Soup Dumplings (A17) - the preferred XLBs for me, these arrived dried out - not sure if the ones that were served were leftovers from the day before, but the skin was so thick and hard, you could hardly bite through; there was no broth inside at all, which is usually plentiful (even with it being chicken meat, instead of pork) +Chicken Wonton, Noodle Soup (N10) - while this is a generous bowl, the noodles are overcooked; the chicken wontons were okay, as they came hot within the broth; on its own, it's bland, but dipping it in the soy sauce/chili oil mixture makes it better Service is usually attentive and efficient, but we had a difficult time putting in our orders in, requesting certain condiments, and getting the check. Note that they give you a 10% discount if you pay in cash. No dice, Bob's Shanghai - you're not part of our dining rotation any longer. +inconsistent quality of items +dried-out XLBs +cash payment includes discount

Yelp
Came here with one of my friends. We were supposed to go to Wang Manor, but found out that they were close. We wanted to get a little bit of everything. So we got a couple appetizers, a couple entrées and some vegetables. The shrimp toast was my favorite appetizer. It was so fresh and loaded with shrimp. I haven't had shrimp toast since I was a child. I feel like it's very rare to find nowadays. The soup dumplings were delicious as well. They were filled with soup and you could tell the meat inside was tender. The duck, pork belly, eggplant were phenomenal. They all had a slight sweetness to it, which was delicious with the white rice. The duck was extra tender and the cilantro on top was the perfect garnish. I wasn't too big of a fan of the salt and pepper shrimp. I'm used to a more traditional styling. I would 100% come back. The service was great. Everything came out one by one fresh and hot.

Yelp
Parking right out front is very limited, especially on weekends, so you will have better luck parking on the other side that wraps around to the left of the restaurant FYI. I came here with my family on a Saturday at noon and it was already pretty packed! Regardless, we had a party of 11 and were seated immediately as long as our whole party was there which was honestly very lucky. We ordered a bunch of soup dumplings, dan dan noodles, zha jiang mien noodles, and tons of other food that I don't remember the names of but I remember them all tasting great! We ordered so many dishes and finished most of it and overall enjoyed everything. Service was attentive and we got water refills promptly when needed. If you pay in cash, you get a discount!

Yelp
Love love love Bob's. Absolutely AMAZING! It deserves 5 stars. People complaining about silly stuff rather than the FOOD! Which is great!

Yelp
Came here on a Friday, right around 6:00 PM, party of 2. Took us less than 10 minutes to get seated, where they handed us menus to order when we sit. The restaurant was packed already, but had a lot of seating, but can be a little cramped. The food here was amazing. The pig ears came out right after we ordered it. Had a nice kick of spiciness and was nice and chewy, very delicious. The soup dumplings were so good (one of the best I've ever had), that I wish we ordered more than one set. The broth was nice and hot, but also the dough did not break easily after picking it up, and the insides were nice and stuffed. The double cooked pork came out on a huge plate, family styled sizes. Everything was portioned nicely, coming with a lot of vegetables, meat, and rice. The flavors were on point here for everything we ordered.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't been here until now! Bob's Shanghai 66 is the perfect comfort food. I came with my husband here on a Friday evening just before the dinner rush. We got lucky and were seated right away. I ordered the pork wonton noodle soup and shared a pork XLB and spicy pig ears with my husband. The pig ears were addicting. Meanwhile, the soup broth in my noodle soup was very flavorful. The noodles soaked up all that good flavor. I was happy about the amount of wontons that were in it too. I also really enjoyed the pork XLB. They were plump and juicy. I was glad they weren't piping hot, so I was able to enjoy them right away. The service was also pretty quick. They bring out hot tea right when you get seated, but you may need to ask for water.

Yelp
Came on New Year's Day around 12pm and it was pretty packed. Had to wait about 30mins and while we waited we were able to decide what items to order off the menu. This place has definitely upgraded in space but I feel as if food quality has dropped a lot. I came here a few years ago and the food then was a lot more delicious. Quality was much better too. Brought my parents here for the first time and sad to say but they were severely underwhelmed with the food. The food was either overly salted or way under seasoned. The cabbage stir fry with garlic arrived looking very sad with giant pieces of cabbage and barely any color or garlic. Had ordered a favorite which was the sour cabbage and intestines as well but I was very disappointed. The dish tasted so overly salty and there wasn't even any flavor with the sour cabbage. Not a fan. We had also ordered pork wontons and it was decent. The wontons were small maybe 10 were served with the broth. the broth was salty as it was seasoned with krill and seaweed. Other dishes we ordered were pan fried pork buns, salt & pepper squid and half a duck. Pork baos were extremely dry and bland. The squid came out with no sign of any salt or pepper. It was definitely seasoned with MSG but unevenly. The only good dish was honestly the duck but we had taken that home instead of eating there. I wish I had taken photos but I was too disappointed in everything.
