Our tour guide in Santiago strongly recommended Bocanariz as a place we should try as a foodie, and it was fortunately located only a couple hundred meters from our hotel. The reviews were and are very good, so we were excited to give it a try. We struck out our first night trying to do a walk-in, but we’re not surprised. A tall man with a light beard at the hostess stand we encountered at the front door however, was actually borderline rude when we asked if we could get in that night, and we almost gave up on trying to visit during our time in Santiago, but we persisted, and were really looking forward to an outstanding dinner. Our hotel’s concierge, who also spoke highly of the restaurant (although he said he never tried it) was able to get us a reservation after all, which was great work on his part. Spoiler alert: while the food was fairly good, it was uneven, and I don’t believe the restaurant lives up to its hype. We would not make an effort to return there again, especially with so many other good restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Lastarria that we enjoyed. We chose the trout tartare for an appetizer, and it was quite good. The presentation was also nice as well as artistic, which I appreciate. I was a little surprised to see trout presented in this way, since it is more common to use something like tuna or beef, but appreciated the creativity and taste. For the main I had the special, which was a shrimp linguine dish. I found the pasta to be too firm for my taste, and the shrimp was significantly undercooked, which gave the overall dish a very odd brined taste, and a less than pleasant mouth feel. My GF had the fish of the day, which was tasty and well prepared, if a bit oversauced.
Bocanariz has a very impressive wine list, and we enjoyed an excellent Chilean Carmenere over a relaxed meal with good service. The vibe is bustling and energetic which made things fun.
While I enjoy going to trendy restaurants, the food always has to be the most important thing, and because of the misses on a couple of points, I can’t enthusiastically recommend this place as a must do while in Santiago. Still a good restaurant and dining experience, but not what I had led to believe we’d experience.
