The Best Dishes Eater SF Editors Ate This Week: Summer 2023 | Eater SF

"Back in spacious new digs, Bocanova’s beef empanadas hit different: braised brisket and chopped green olives made a juicier, tender filling wrapped in a crusty exterior, with shaved red onions for crunch and a chile aioli for heat and tang—perfect for happy hour." - Eater Staff

Boconova, a Favorite Oakland Restaurant for Latin American Brunch, Just Reopened After Six Years | Eater SF

"After a six-year hiatus, I found Bocanova reopened on April 10 at 1111 Broadway in downtown Oakland with a major facelift and a refreshed menu and design. The more than 6,000-square-foot space—reimagined by design firm Arcsine with owners Rick Hackett, Meredith Melville, and Martin Ladera—includes two outdoor patios, an espresso bar with pastries to-go for morning commuters, a casual bar area for brunch and parties, and a cozier dinner section with booths. The restaurant keeps its ever-popular chocolate croissant bread pudding while adding new breakfast and dinner options (banana bread by morning and mezcal palomas by night), features a turquoise, coral, and teakwood palette meant to evoke Central and South American cultures, and is tied together by a vibrant mural of a winged woman painted by Cameron “CAMER1sf” Moberg; Justin Phanksom of Tea Bella Cafe is also contributing cheesecakes. The new Bocanova is open Monday–Saturday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m." - Paolo Bicchieri

Came here with my mom for our first time, and WOW 🤩 such a great experience! We were not disappointed. The vibe was cozy and beautiful, and the service was top-tier from start to finish. We shared all the dishes, which made it even more fun. The Mexican Caesar Salad with grilled chicken was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly done. But the REAL star was the moqueca 😍 — rich, creamy, and packed with tender fish and shrimp. Every bite was amazing! Finished strong with chocolate and vanilla ice cream 🍨 — the perfect sweet ending. Loved everything about this place and can’t wait to come back. Highly recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seven Fishes of Christmas done right 🎄🐟 We spent Christmas Eve at Bocanova in Oakland for their Feast of the Seven Fishes prix fixe and it was the perfect way to celebrate the holiday. Every course was on point from the ahi tuna poke all the way to the crispy whole branzino and the bûche de Noël to finish. The food was thoughtful, beautifully prepared, and genuinely delicious across the board. What really made the night special was meeting the owner, Martin. He was incredibly welcoming, took time to chat with us, shared a bit about the restaurant, and made us feel right at home. You could feel the care and pride behind the entire experience. Amazing food, warm hospitality, and a great holiday vibe. We will absolutely be back.

Decide to try a place my friend recommended and I was not disappointed. Bocanova was delicious. I got the Peruvian classic ceviche for an app and then decided to go for a chifa steak. Both were delicious and I got a couple of drinks. My favorite was the Broadway. The server Nicole was very nice and attentive. Will be coming back soon! Thank you!

I came to Bocanova on Wednesday with my son and my husband. We sat in the main dining room and we shared a couple of dishes starting with the oysters and they were delicious and fresh! You can't beat $2 oysters which we found out they offer 7 days a week during Happy hour. The other dishes we shared were their Peruvian beef stir fry which was to die for! And the Ecuadorian Tuna Stew! They were so good I booked another reservation to bring my family. Mary and Montaiesha took care of us, they were very nice and made sure we had a wonderful time! The attentiveness and ambiance overall was really really good and you can tell everyone here works as a team.

Google
I love coming to Bocanova, the service is always so attentive, the music choices and level of noise is optimal and I haven't even gotten to the food! this time I ordered the Shrimp Louie salad followed by the Cúpula de Limón, both absolutely delicious! can't wait to come back with friends and family.

Google
This place deserves five stars in all categories! We were looking for a dog friendly restaurant for a late lunch, and were very happy to find this place! Dungeness Crab Deviled Eggs and Ceviche were great starters, and both large plates had good portions and very delicious. We were so full when the Guava Cheesecake, but we were still amazed by it - It’s a must try! One of the owners came to greet us, and from his interactions with the staff, we could tell this is a place that treats employees well!

Everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the Brussel sprouts, deviled eggs, beef empenadas, and churros! The service was great and the food was fast even on a busy night. I can't wait to return.

Google
Loved the shrimp Louie salad! The service is amazing! I washed it down with with their famous Bocanova margarita. Cozette was my bartender and she was amazing and recommend the new dessert cupula de limon (kinda like a lime mouse dome) so good gotta try for sure ! Met the owner Martin he was a great guy I recommend you come in for happy hour every day 3-6pm!

Yelp
Let me start by saying 5 stars all around! Matine who is one of the owners was especially kind to us today! We are so happy that we stopped by for the dinner menu because I have only visited during their lunch hours. We ordered the chicken tacos one word Yum! And the flank steak and let me just tell yall.... It was one of the best steaks we have ever had! We will be coming back for more of that very soon! We also just found out they now have Sunday 3 course meals for only $39.99! Such a great deal for the abundance of flavor you will get from the food!!! The quality is exquisite! You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
When Bonobo was located in Jaqueline Square it was one of my most favorite places to join. I love the atmosphere and their creative menu. Always left my taste buds. Happy and excited. When they close, I was pretty bumped out, in the last few years I came to know they reopened downtown Oakland! I went there for my birthday dinner a few days ago with two of my closest friends and hoping it would be at least somewhat close to quality of the first place I have an awesome happy hour every day, including the weekend. My group ordered a bunch of starters, including the crab, deviled eggs, duck soda, ceviche, barely tostada. All were excellent. We also ordered the prefix menu which changes daily, our main that evening was called with yellow rice and vegetables. Very delicious season nicely are not too salty! Just wanted to hop on here and leave a review, definitely will be returning again soon to try more of their dishes. Also, excellent cocktails!

Yelp
I got the mushroom gumbo, cornbread, and duck tostadas. The food was mid. By mid I mean the food wasn't exceptional, it lacked flavor/seasoning, and the portion size was small. Outside of all those disappointing issues, we were charged 18% gratuity automatically for a party of two. I do not appreciate being automatically charged a tip. Tips are voluntary. Tips are at the discretion of the customer who ate the food and received the service of the waiter. If I thought the waiter gave me good service, answered my questions, and went above and beyond then 18% would be given. My waiter didn't do anything special and we consistently spent time looking for her/trying to get her attention for help. I did not consent to the 18% gratuity and I'm not happy that gratuity was chosen for me! Do not waste your money going to Bocanova. We paid 105 to still be hungry after ordering appetizers , a small plate, and an entree. The food isn't worth the prices or forced 18% gratuity. If you want good Peruvian/Latin food go to Lacuma.

Yelp
Food and drinks were fine. Service was not. We went to Bocanova for afternoon drinks and small bites and asked to sit outside, since they have outdoor seating and heat lamps. The request was met with visible attitude and an eye roll from the hostess. We asked for a heater. After about ten minutes, our server tried to light it--no luck. The hostess tried next--also no luck. There were several other heaters nearby, but no one offered to try another or followed up at all. If you're going to advertise outdoor seating with heat lamps, you should be willing and able to actually use them--without making guests feel like an inconvenience. To be clear, the drinks and food were not the issue--they were perfectly fine. And our food server was friendly and accommodating. But good food doesn't excuse bad service from the hostess or her attitude. Disappointing experience from a place we've liked in the past.

Yelp
Came here for a dinner with a group of friends. We made a reservation so were seated promptly. Some of our group was running late, but they were able to seat us and we were able to wait for the rest of our group at the table. The interior of this restaurant is upscale and classy, a nice place to have a fancy-ish dinner. We ordered a few items from the appetizers list to share, everything was quite good! My favorite was the calamari. For my entree, I got the fish and scallops dish - it was sooo good. Lots of scallop and fish, it left me very satisfied. We enjoyed our meal here and stayed for a few hours talking and enjoying the food and company. By the time we left, the restaurant was closing, but we never felt rushed or anything to leave. The waitstaff was also incredible. I would recommend trying this place out if you are in the area!

Yelp
My friend and I attended Rick's Supper Club at BocaNova, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! I was especially excited because the menu focused on seafood and Caribbean dishes--two of my absolute favorites--and it did not disappoint. The cost was about $100, but it was well worth every penny. This was my first time at a supper club event, and at first it felt a little awkward sitting so close and sharing a meal with strangers. But after a couple of drinks, the whole table felt like family--lots of laughs and good vibes all around! The chef, restaurant owner, and staff were incredible--so welcoming, attentive, and passionate about what they do. The food was excellent, and the wine pairings elevated everything beautifully. I had an amazing time and will definitely be back for another supper club event! Highly recommend if you're looking for a unique dining experience.

Yelp
Sat at the bar. The appetizer deviled eggs with blue crab were amazing. The Flat iron steak was pretty incredible also. Service was on point. Quiet and peaceful diner after a long great day.

Yelp
A Christmas Eve to Remember This year was my very first time spending Christmas Eve out on the town instead of at home with my family, and I had no idea how many people actually go out to dine on this night. Bocanova offered a special menu called the Feast of the 7 Fishes. Every dish was creative, innovative, and delicious. It truly felt like a celebration, not just a meal. Not to mention the stroll through the Financial District we took that was stunned by gorgeous how it looked with the architecture and festive energy. Bocanova made my first Christmas Eve out absolutely unforgettable!

Yelp
This was one of my favorite restaurants in Oakland when it was in Jack London Square. I had no idea. I had reopened five years ago at this location. It does not disappoint. The service is excellent, the atmosphere is fun and elegant, the food is divine, and my drink was perfection. I can't wait to come back for more.

Yelp
Very good place! After working across the street from this place since it opened a few years ago, finally came for lunch. I got the special heirloom salad - which honestly was kinda disappointing but still good. Idk if it was the tomatoes not being quite as flavorful as expected or if the cream sauce they put on top didn't mesh well with the tomatoes but, while good, it wasn't amazing. I also got the burger. Wow was it interesting! A chimichurri with loads of mushrooms. Interesting/different flavors but it worked really well and the burger was cooked absolutely perfectly and the bun was delicious! Def recommend.

Yelp
I went back and forth between 3 or 4 star, and ultimately decided to go with 4 because they did provide good service. I took my family here for dinner during the week, there was no wait, and we caught the tail end of the HH deals. We ordered: Oysters 4/5: fresh and tasty, and for $2 each, a great deal during HH Guac & Chips 3/5: average, wish more flavor Ceviche 5/5: loved this ceviche combo, must order Duck Mole 3/5: wish portion was a little bigger given price, but the duck was cooked perfectly, the mole flavor was overshadowed and barely came in Scallops 4/5: I found the scallops a little too salty, but my partner really like the freshness, so I gave it a 4 Dessert 2/5: we ordered 2 desserts: bread pudding and something else, both forgettable and we did not finish. Service was good tho :)

Yelp
Went here for Happy Hour on a Thursday and it was not crowded which was nice. I got the Chilcano drink & guacamole and chips. The chilcano drink was fine but lots of ice haha. The guacamole and chips were good. My coworker got the Bourbon flight and I had a sip of it and woooo it was (warm), strong and flavorful. It was like taking 3 shots LOL. The 3rd one, my coworker asked for a cup of ice to drink it on the rocks and it was better. Service was fine. I do think the HH prices are not that cheap compared to other places. Other than that, the area was clean and nice. Street parking. There is a parking garage nearby but it's pricey. You can also take bart to 12th Street/City Center Oakland and walk one block over. Place was overall okay!

Yelp
Came here after a little gathering downtown. Friendly service and you're able to book tables online. Cute inside bar area with tables and outside patio tables. Bathroom - single person bathroom to the left of the bar. Good menu selection, good happy hour and good drinks!
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
Montaiesha was a great server. Restaurant itself is modern and very clean/welcoming. Their happy hour oysters are $2 each and were very good. The blue crab deviled eggs and ceviche verde from their happy hour was also excellent. Husband enjoyed his chicken tacos. The Broadway cocktails and house white wine were good. Nice lively music and attentive service. Will be back!

Yelp
Came here for a work lunch. We had a reservation and were seated right away. The interior is spacious and has plenty of seating. The prices are a little higher, but we came prepared. What we did NOT come prepared for was the small portion sizes for our meals. We ordered the following - Breaded cauliflower and it was delicious! - French fries Main meals - Salmon Poke bowl - was good BUT extremely small portion for the price - Fish Tacos - was good BUT extremely small portion for the price 4 of us came to eat and all four of us left hungry and unsatisfied with the portion sizes. With that said eat before hand or in my case I will not be returning.

Yelp
This restaurant can be a little hard to find. It is actually on the first floor of a business building and there are multiple doors, not all of which are open. The main entrance is actually through an outdoor patio on the bar side. The restaurant is nicely dedicated and the staff were friendly. I enjoyed everything we ate and our server gave us great recommendations. The ceviche verde tostadas were the star of the show, fresh and phenomenal. The corn bread is really unique and I loved that as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This space is unassuming from the front on Broadway but it is much larger and has big windows so much natural light. The service was great, even for the large group that we had. I am going giving four stars because the seafood stew left me wanting more depth of flavor and more seafood. There was only one scallop and it wasn't a full one and the fish wasn't a whole filet.

Maha H.

Yelp
We had a party for our daughter. Martin and his team were so good. Our 55 guests, young and old, were absolutely happy with their experience: the food was amazing and the service was perfect! The ceviche spoons, empanadas, steak bites were delicious as appetizers. The family style dinner service was perfect and allowed our guests to feel more at home.

Yelp
Met a colleague here for happy hour. I never knew this place existed! We sat at the bar which was separate from the dining room. I think I may have found my new favorite place in Oakland! We ordered from the happy hour menu, which had a lot of offerings for both food and drink. I had the classic margarita, which was delicious. We shared the beef empanadas, chicken tacos, guacamole and the fish ceviche. Everything was chef kiss! Well, I will say my least favorite thing was the ceviche. The ingredients were fresh, but I didn't taste anything more than sour. I'd be curious how the other ceviches taste. All in all, amazing place, amazing vibe and amazing customer service. I can't wait to come here for dinner. Food rating Beef empanadas 10/10 Chicken tacos 10/10 Fish ceviche 7/10 Ambiance 10/10 Customer service 10/10

Super kind people that work in Bocanova great service, the capacity is perfect for a party. The food and drinks are amazing. I love Bocanova!!

Yelp
Ive been here for brunch and dinner which are decent. However 1st time for their lunch and it was a huge miss. I can see why we were the only table in this establishment during this time. Disappointed in our server's hospitality as we barely touched our main entree and did not want to take it with us. He was kind however, He Did Not ask us how our meal was or inquire why we did not want it. We paid for our food, informed him the food was inedible and no solution, apology, discount was offered. Just letting the kitchen know... great, Won't be returning. We tried the following: - Ahi Nikkei ceviche: flavorful however for a ceviche you'd expect some sort of chip to come with it.. - "Mexican Cesar" was underdressed and bland.. - Peruvian Beef Stir Fry "Lomo Saltado" : flavor was okay however the meat pieces were inedible! All the pieces were fat and or had silver skin in them. Could not eat or swallow it. . (I'm not going to show picture of chewed of fat we left on the plate bc that's disgusting but the photo below does show silver skin still in the meat) I expect better for the prices they're charging And as a chef myself dissatisfied.

Yelp
Overall the food was delicious. Ordered: Seafood ciopino = B+ Flat iton steak= A Devil eggs= A Verde Cetviche= C- Chocolate croissant bread pudding = B Service was attentive. Impressed because our waitress also had a large party she was supporting. A Atmosphere was also very nice. Simple eating area spear from bar area A .... Only area that would slow me down... at the end of the night 2 ppl ...2 appetizers, 2 main dishes and 1 dessert. Bill was $178. without tip. While the dinner was enjoyable... this bill was easily $50 more than it should have been. The bill seemed like gouging (and this is from someone who Loves Peruvian food and eats it regularly). Way over priced, but enjoyable dinner.

Yelp
Food was tasty; service was attentive; ambiance was corporate; could've used better NA options for drinks. Went for a "feast of seven fishes" special Xmas eve menu, 5 courses for $100. Portions were generous - I deliberately didn't finish every dish so I could at least taste it all. Great deal for the price, and overall the flavors were good enough that I'd go back, especially if I needed this sort of place for a group meal. Also, I didn't know they have a coffee bar, which seems to be separate. Might go back and try that sometime.
google avatar

Daly D.

Yelp
Everything about Bocanova was great. Excellent lunch menu and cocktails. The service was wonderful and our meal and dessert was reminiscent of the old Bocanova on Jack London. They have a nice patio area, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch without feeling rushed or constantly interrupted by wait staff.
google avatar

May Z.

Yelp
First of all, happy hour everyday and an extensive list of offerings at that. The decor is really lovely. It's currently decorated for Christmas. They have an espresso bar and cocktail bar. Service was quick and helpful! I only tried appetizers because I was there for happy hour, they were all generous portions!
google avatar

Jose F.

Yelp
Overall this was a confusing experience. When I walked in there was no host stand just a coffee bar but nobody there. A few people turned to look at me, I later realized they were employees, finally one of them sat me. As a party of 1 I was only given the option to sit at the bar even though only 1 table was being used. I did really enjoy the green ceviche, it was fantastic. The experience was just overall bad given the staff was more concerned with gathering at the bar doing their own thing than minding the customers. At one point a party walked through the door but nobody greeted or attempted to seat them so they left. Food is good service is just bad.

Yelp
Hmmmmm.... I'm not sure I understand the hype. So I guess I'll just break it down. .5 star - Service. Don't get me wrong - the young lady was exceptional! Although, my coworker is allergic to something in the ingredients. Instead of taking the feedback the manager on duty was upset and was placing a blame and running around asking who made the mistake. Just why? Who reprimands someone on the floor - super unprofessional. Just fix the problem. The dish was remade and thankfully we didn't need to push an epi. .5 Star - Ambiance - I had no idea this place had a back dining area! This would be a great location for groups and business meetings. Plus for having a heated patio! 1 star - The small plates were exceptional. I highly recommend the empanadas and I'm a sucker for vinegar so I was a huge fan of the Brussels sprouts. The arugula salad top notch! On the flip side - I had the scallops for the entree. The curry sold me, what put me off was the seasoning. Just a tad too much salt. Bonus point 1 - this location is easy to get to and is front and center on 11th and broadway. Maybe if extra care was taken into consideration then a guaranteed 3.5-4 would be spot on. This place is not a 2 for sure. Solid 3-3.5

Yelp
100/10 would absolutely recommend. The entire Bocanova staff is wonderful and the food is delicious. Our company has partnered with Bocanova for the past 3 years and we don't plan on changing restaurants any time soon. Martin, Victoria, Alejandro, and the entire staff are kind and always go above and beyond to ensure our events, meals, and experience is fantastic. The music and atmosphere is always on point. We love you BocaNova!

Banke O.

Yelp
The ambiance was amazing but the food was meh, nothing to write home about. We ordered the Peruvian style chicken which had the most flavor and I loved the arugula as an additional touch. The Coconut Seafood Stew "Moqueca" on the other hand was bland. The soup felt watered down mainly lacking depth, so I wouldn't recommend ordering that from the menu. Overall, I won't be paying another visit because for the price I expect impeccable food. Our group didn't order drinks so I can't comment on that.

Yelp
Had the chance to try Bocanova for their Oakland Restaurant Week deal, and it was a treat! We started the night strong with the freshest shrimp aquachile that came with some warm tostadas. Then we tried both the entree - the seafood feijoada comes with seabass, salmon, calamari, scallops, and even pork belly, drenched in roasted jalapeno cream that tasted nutty and tomatoey. The roasted duck was yummy too - reminds me of Asian stirfry but with a Mexican mole twist, with tender perfectly cooked meat. Dinner prix fixe ($54) Appetizer - Shrimp aquachile or grilled asparagus Main - Seafood feijoada or pan roasted duck breast Dessert - Pastel de chocolate From their regular dinner menu Chocolate croissant bread pudding ($14) - one of the best desserts ive had in a while! Flaky croissant, on top of warm creamy bread pudding, topped with their housemade chocolate ice cream that is bitter, the perfect sweet bitter flavor! Blue crab beignet ($22) - loved the crunchy exterior of the beignet! The filling is very soft, the beignet is also soft, the spicy mayo sauce is needed to balance of the creamy crab filling Beef empanada ($18) - beeef is soo tender and nice flavor, a solid empanada. 100 Anos en Oaxaca cocktail ($17) - mezcal is strong but the flavor is great Forbidden apple mezcal ($17) - very sweeet tasting! The dining space is really nice, not a loud space as it is separated from the bar area. They also have a outdoor seating area. Parking may be tricky as they dont have a special lot, but can do street parking or park at the Marriot hotel across from them for a $20 flat rate.

Yelp
Rating JUST for the cocktails. Came here on a Tuesday night and enjoyed two delicious Mezcal based cocktails, prepared by a short Latino bartender named Alejandro. I HIGHLY recommend ordering the "Alejandro Especial" which has Liquor de artichoke in it. It has a bit of a kick to it, so be forewarned! Let Alejandro do his magic and take care of you!! You will NOT be disappointed!

Yelp
Got food poisoning from their Ceviche. Was sick 30 minutes after dining, barely made it home, and continued for three days.

Yelp
A modern place in downtown Oakland. Went here for lunch recently and enjoyed the Latin American ambiance. I enjoyed my salad although I didn't feel completely full after, I did feel healthy! Great vibes here!

Yelp
Sitting on the ground floor of a Downtown Oakland corporate building, this Peruvian restaurant is majorly huge. Jamie W. and I were casually strolling on Broadway trying to figure out what to have for dinner when we saw the Bocanova sign. I took a look at the menu and was intrigued enough to convince Jamie to give it a try. It turned out we were their first diners of the evening. Jamie surprised me by first ordering a $9 Modelo Lager Draft Beer from Mexico, while I surprised no one ordering the $15 1944 Mai Tai (photo: https://yelp.to/EIDcwj-fOU). Both provided refreshing starts to our meal, mine with a little more kick thanks to the aged rum. We segued to our side dishes. The $10 Patatas Bravas were perfectly cooked with a drizzle of aji rocoto aioli (photo: https://yelp.to/zJFJaX3Sf9). Quite meltably good. The $8 Poblano Cornbread was a nice bite size treat topped with melted cheddar with whipped butter pretty much unnecessary (photo: https://yelp.to/ePNW1ReBO8). Our entrees came next as Jamie had the $14 Small Vegetarian Mushroom Gumbo with okra, green garlic, and rice (photo: https://yelp.to/SDnar11HNl). Deep, rich flavor. I went with the $25 Peruvian Style Chicken "a la Brasa". While it was a hearty portion, the sour citrus pisco sauce didn't quite work for me, though the arugula and roasted potatoes were welcome sights (photo: https://yelp.to/X0qnn-2Ak9). We decided to treat ourselves to dessert and concluded the the Warm Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding with Mexican chocolate ice cream (photo: https://yelp.to/wpmkkrwQZ2) was more satisfying than the smooth Mexican flan with crispy caramel clusters (photo: https://yelp.to/0WEl286GWQ). FOOD - 4 stars...mostly well executed Peruvian staples with the patatas bravas the winner AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...massive scale was a bit daunting but certainly accommodates a lot of parties SERVICE - 4 stars...courteous, attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...Peruvian on a grand scale RELATED - Exploring Oakland? Yelp
We initially tried to go to Popoca, around the corner, which was slammed -- make reservations! --but this seemed like a fun alternative. So, you enter first through the cafe, which looks nice but seemed kind of quiet on a Friday night (not a surprise) - but then the hostess led us into the back room, which was much more bustling and liveley. We were seated in a comfy booth in the corner. Delicious modern Peruvian: lomo saltado, mango and avocado salad, polenta fries, coconut seafood stew, and duck tostadas. Fun cocktails too; I had a mezcal paloma.

Yelp
I've passed this restaurant a million times in downtown Oakland, but never really had a clue about it because it's kind of tucked back off the street. I thought the food was OK. Nothing razzled or dazzled me. The service was good and the ambience nice. I just wish the food was more exciting. We got there during happy hour so prices and portions were reduced. The restaurant is not cheap, so I expect better quality food. Not sure I'll be back.

Yelp
After a long day, Bocanova was exactly what I needed and Alejandro and the entire crew made the experience unforgettable! The ceviche was fresh and bursting with flavor, and the homemade guacamole paired with their warm, crispy house-made chips! Outstanding. Everything tasted thoughtfully prepared and perfectly balanced. Bocanova is a gem and if you're lucky enough to have Alejandro behind the bar, you're in for treat!

Yelp
First, the food was delicious! We had Arugula salad that was crisp and fresh and seasonal. We also shared all our plates including a vegetable gumbo and a swordfish that we talked a lot about as we ate it and afterward. The space was lovely. We had chosen a particular spot with a nice-sized table but had to move for a large party at another table (they must have arrived after we left) so our table got a bit crowded with all our plates. Service checked in from time to time, especially towards the end but it was slow that Friday night so unsure as to why we waited for service periodically. Really recommend the food and it seems like cool events are happening soon! I suggest supporting this spot as it is so close to Bart and buses and in a part of downtown that needs a little more love.

Yelp
Love this place! The staff actually asked my name since I've been in to sit at the bar a few times! The bartenders are super nice. I've also met one of the owners, and you can see how passionate he is about this place. The food is excellent! Lomo Satado is spot on, and the empanadas and cheese quesadilla are both hits! Their cornbread is some of the best I've ever had. It's in the financial part of Oakland on 12th street, and it just doesn't feel like the locatioh does it justice. I hope more people can come out to enjoy happy hour here. The ambiance is nice, well lit, and very clean. It's a great go-to spot for me, and I always end up ordering food to go because it's that good!

Yelp
Their veggie option is very good. Fish and chips were very tasty. Atmosphere is very quiet inside the restaurant

Yelp
Beautiful setting with loads of fresh seafood on the menu. It was a bit pricey for two and we were both slightly hungry when we left but overall it was nice. Service was fast and the margaritas were yummy!

Yelp
After passing so many times, we decided to finally stop in and take advantage of their happy hour which is daily. MaryCarmen was our waitress and was very attentive, she made suggestions. Food is fresh and delicious. I highly recommend this hidden gem

Yelp
Food wasn't the best at all. I couldn't eat my stomach was hurting. The shrimp that was dwn played was amazing. But everything else wasn't I am pretty disappointed. I told them it was my husband birthday and added to my reservation. Nothing happen. Big ass disappointment. Drinks weren't even good. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Yelp
My wife and I went to Bocanova for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and we were pleasantly surprised by such an amazing location with the perfect patio setting overlooking the downtown. The service was impeccable. The drinks were on point and the food was absolutely delicious. We are telling all our friends about this place the experience of the food, drinks and atmosphere were perfect. What a hidden gem in downtown Oakland. 5 stars for Bocanova!
