The Best Restaurants in Medford | Eater Boston

"Bocelli’s is yet another restaurant specializing in Italian-American cuisine, and it offers a variety of house-made pasta options. The menu includes all the usual suspects, like veal saltimbocca, chicken piccata, shrimp scampi, spaghetti and meatballs, and fettuccine alfredo." - Terrence Doyle

Looking to have some serious carbs and found this place while visiting Medford in Boston. Great bar service. The bread was warm and delicious. The best bruschetta I ever tasted, fresh tomatoes with cheese. Gnocchi was good but would have been better with a lighter sauce. Manicotti was great.

Google
I’ve gone here so many times for dinner or for big parties. The waitress Donna is always making the experience way better and always make sure u need anything The service is always fabulous and nothing changes always the same energy provided the whole way throughout. The food is good especially the chicken, broccoli Alfredo and the fresh bread that is provided is always the best to me personally but overall everything is excellent and there is never a bad thing happening.

Incredible food, their pizzas were delicious. My margeherita pizza was fantastic. Their service is top notch and the staff is very attentive. Great place to enjoy a group dinner. It has all the old school charm of a sit down restaurant.

Google
Such a great find for delicious food and rustic, homely but fun atmosphere! I had the pesto pasta and it’s the best I’ve had ever! Cappuccino was nice too. Our server was great.. giving my friend and I enough space to catch up but also kept checking in! Nothing to dislike .. will definitely recommend and revisit!

We chose this place because it’s not far from Chevalier Theater we were going to. The food was very good, but the service was horrible. We waited over 10 min before someone even came to our table. The young man waiter forgot to give grilled chicken on my fettuccine. It was later brought out in a bowl of Alfredo sauce with big chunks of chicken. We asked for more bread and he never brought it. He had a flat affect and was not engaging at all. It’s too bad. We tip very well for friendly and attentive servers. We won’t be back.

Tasty pasta, seafood and lamb rack. Would go again!

Google
Excellent Italian food. Home made pasta, perfect chicken Parm, good seafood options. Lengthy menu and decent cocktails. Service was slow and space itself is a bit dated, but honestly, one of the higher quality food options in the area.

Made an early dinner reservation 5:30 PM on a Saturday) for when family was visiting from out of town. I was really interested in trying a new Italian spot in this part of town, and was intially quite excited based on the large menu and homey atmosphere. This excitement was extinguished after placing our order, in that we had to wait nearly an hour (after ordering) before our food came out. Our server did not check in, despite us requesting more coffee and water, until we caught them to inquire about the food. We were assured it was coming but had to wait 20 more minutes to finally receive our meals. The food had large portions but was relatively bland. The part that really disappointed was the staff was not apologetic in the slightest about the long wait (and the restaurant was not busy so we assume the food was never put it initially). To end, we received the check to see a double charge for the entire bill. Upon catching the eror, the server again did not apologize at all and quickly reprinted the reciept without any comment. In all, the food was okay and the atmosphere was comfortable, but we unfortunately received some of the worst service I've had in Boston.

Yelp
We had a great meal at Bocelli's on a busy Saturday night. We had to wait about 10 minutes before being seated, which is understandable on a Saturday night at such a busy place. When seated, we had great service and the food was like I remember, fantastic! We started out with drinks and some bread! The bread is always fresh and plentiful. From there, we ordered our main dishes. I had the pizza and my wife ordered pasta fagioli soup. The timing between ordering and the food arriving was great. Again, we noticed it was a busy night so we were pleasantly surprised at how well things went. My pizza was great! My wife was thrilled with the soup. Great temperature and plenty of soup! Our server had our table and the 3 around us. She was available and right on top of whatever we wanted. Bocelli's remains a "throwback" type of place to me. I remember coming here in college and with my friends over the span of many summers. I am a fan, for sure! Price was fair Service was great Parking was easy. We were able to park right across the street Ambience was perfect We did not get dessert. It looked awesome on the way out....next time Would I come back? Of course...hoping to make it back before Summer '25

Yelp
My brother and sister-in-law were in town so we decided to go to lunch at Bocelli's. Everyone's meal was outstanding. We were served by Wendy who was a very sweet and attentive waitress. She checked on us constantly and our water jug was never empty. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Amazing food and excellent service and hospitality. Best Italian food north of Bostons North End. Great menu and wine list. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Just the best! Really enjoyed the authentic Italian- American fare. Never had anything but a wonderful meal here. Their bathroom renovations positively sparkle!

Sue C.

Yelp
We had dinner this evening and it was delicious . My shrimp scampi was outstanding, plenty of shrimp and I wanted to drink the scampi sauce! My husband had the chicken parm and he is very picky.. he loved it! Outstanding service and Wendy was the best waitress.. highly recommend!

Yelp
Just had a dinner there tonight. The food tasted great but it was not kids friendly. My daughter saw the killing scenes on the TV. Someone used a knife to slash another person and there was blood all over. My daughter got really scared and upset. We asked the waitress to change the channel. They changed it. It was okay for a while, then there was a scene where people were having sex. Luckily this time my daughter was playing my smart phone so she didn't see it. Although the food tasted great, my daughter came home crying and said she's really scared from the violence scenes. It was just very upsetting for a kid. The service was super slow when the restaurant was not full. We had to sit there and waited for an hour to get our main course. It really delayed the kids' sleep time. A great restaurant for adults but not for kids.

Yelp
Went to Boccelli's recently on the way to a Celtics game. I haven't been here for years and I mean years, but I used to love it. It was lunchtime so we decided to get lighter fare than dinners. Our waitress brought over waters and we ordered our beverages. Two of us got two different Sangrias. Both were Ok but lacked flavor. They just tasted like wine. Only fruit in them was bar cherries. She also brought a basket of really delicious bread, butter, oil and olives. The bread was crusty on the outside with sesame seeds and moist and soft on the inside. We ordered right away as we pressed for time. Two ordered soups, Chicken Noodle and Escarole, and one ordered the Caesar salad. The waitress said the Escarole would take 5 minutes that they had to make it. I think they have all ingredients separate and then thrown together when ordered. The soup was good but tasted like they just threw it together. All I tasted was the salty broth. The one eating the salad said it might have been a little over dressed with salad dressing. Two decided to split a large pizza, and the other two got two different calzones. One cheese and one had meat in it. The pizza is the thin style and was very good. Just the way I like it. They also have thick pizza. The calzones were very good also. I didn't get a chance to take pics of the calzones because they ate then so fast. My grandson did take a picture of his plain pasta though! All in all, it was a great lunch!

Yelp
I've been here four times since the new owner bought it, and each time i've heard her screaming and berating her employees from the kitchen , I confronted my server and was told that it's a regular thing. I would like to be able to enjoy my meal without hearing constant screaming and arguing. I used to really like this place, but the new owner ruined it. Everyone who works here seems miserable , the food is mediocre and the bad vibes makes it taste even worse . The owner clearly does not know how to run a business or treat her employees. Sad to watch, nobody deserves a boss like that . I hope that these people find better jobs . Do not support this establishment!!!!

Mike R.

Yelp
My wife and I went this past Saturday, food was good, atmosphere is just what a local place should offer, and our waitress Wendy, who we've had before, was excellent. We had the fruitti de mare, eggplant/chicken Parm combo, house salad, and canolli and tiramisu for dessert!

Robert W.

Yelp
Under new management food is excellent but watch your bill closely they like to add things on and then blame each other about the issue has happened on multiple occasions seems like they purchased more than the buissness they purchased the playbook also.

Donna A.

Yelp
The food is amazing and some people are misinformed about the restaurant changing hands the owner passed away and the new owners are not new ! nothing has changed in the kitchen everyone that is working in the kitchen have been there for over 20 years

Jen B.

Yelp
Very rushed not friendly servers (3 different). Poor quality meals. Super disappointed.

Yelp
This is a local place through and through and that is what makes it so special. The first time u walking here kids were running around as our server came up trying bribe them with dessert. I love the feeling of places like that. Service is kind but gruff in again the best kind of local way. Menu is extensive in their offerings. You will definitely be able to find something for everyone. It's small at the top but has a big room downstairs. The pasta I had was alright but dessert was to die for! If you're going get the brownie with ice cream or get two! Absolutely delicious! I would go back just for dessert and drinks.

Yelp
Everything actually. Been there many times, especially under New Mgmt (Definitely NOT Disappointed)! Different nights & times of the week and have brought guest for dinner. They've been so impressed (from Danvers) that they have met us numerous times after. Tried many different items from menu, however, ABSOLUTELY LOVE their Veal!!Like I said, been going there since it was DePasquales way back 70's (brought own beer or wine) then Boccellis & LOVE their food, pizza & drinks!! NEVER DISAPPOINTED!!

Yelp
Terrible meal and experience at Bocellis Friday evening April 4,2025. My husband and I frequently ate here and the new ownership and chefs aren't making the marks at all. I ordered a chicken cutlet with risotto and pesto sauce. I received a refried chicken parm cutlet with red sauce fried onto the cutlet along with a small amount pesto drizzled onto. One bite and ai had to return the dish, terrible! Thirty minutes our young male waiter returned with the correct dish and ai ate alone as my husband finished his meal. My husband normally says nothing more but he was very upset such a simple meal was improperly prepared and told the waiter "why couldn't this be done the first time!". The waiter offered a complimentary desert we already planned on having a Spumoni Bomb of course they were out. I get busy nights but no water refills, long wait for dinner, order incorrect, lousy food. We had a huge family party back in December and food and staff were amazing . They were all the old owners staff, was considering another large function this Summer for a 90th birthday unfortunately this is no longer the welcoming delicious family dinner restaurant we once loved. Very disappointed. Donna and Joe Madarese

Yelp
Gave it another try awful burnt pizza Oven needs to be cleaned shame I use to like this place won't be going back place looked deserted not like it use to be I miss the old owners best Italian food back then now it's terrible lots of luck but lost 4 of us not to mention my friends that use to go there

Yelp
If I could give it 0 I absolutely would. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry my entire life this place was an absolute disaster on what could have been its busiest night. it starts with my husband and i coming in for our 7:45 reservation, parking was tough tried calling 3x around 7:40 and the phone was off, okay no big deal it's a busy night totally understandable. we walk in and there are people waiting outside that have yet to check in, the inside? packed like sardines. not a host or host stand in sight to even check in reservations. embarrassing! It's valentine's day?? then on top of that there's a older host walking up and down stairs taking random people to tables! when i finally found the manager in her bright pink shirt to ask her about checking in and what the deal was with why no one was even able to check in for their reservations, i was met with an attitude! i understand you're busy however dont give me sass because you can't run a restaurant and clearly need help. By 8:15 and after watching many people leave after sitting and not being served, we decided enough was enough and ended up at El Tacuba which is never bad. This was beyond disappointing and i hope everyone else was able to come up with ulterior plans.

Yelp
Felt like I was in a true Italians home - the interior is a bit outdated but has a dessert case when you first walk in, a bar, booth tables and then a side room with more seating. They have functions in the basement. Our waitress was very busy, but so nice to us and I felt like our service was exceptional timing. Old fashion wasn't too strong/a small portion, Marinara sauce delicious and a really good pizza. The parking situation is a bit hard around here, no parking lot. Some spots across the street but on a Friday night was full. Tried driving down side streets and a lot was permit parking. So that makes it a bit challenging.

Yelp
Excellent food, Excellent service, staff was wonderful. It's a cute place with a comfortable atmosphere. I had the grilled salmon with spinach and rice, it was the amazing! My husband had the homemade fusilli with sausage and my mother had the Cheeseburger and French Fries. All of our meals were absolutely delicious! We are looking forward to going back!

Sheila R.

Yelp
Aways a delicious meal I have been going here for over 20 years and it never disappoints. I also have bocelli's cater all my family times and it's always a hit.

Yelp
First, let me tell you about the pizza. It is the very best pizza in the area, and that's saying a lot, because there are a boatload of pizza places in Medford. It's a nice thin crust with just the right amount of toppings. I usually get the cheese pizza. But when I'm feeling adventurous, I'll get the spinach, garlic, and anchovy pizza. Don't be afraid of the anchovies. I don't know what they do with it, but they cook it in such a way that there is a perfect hint of anchovy flavor. This evening, along with the pizza, I had the chicken and some fish. Both were excellent. The chicken was nice and moist, and the fish was cooked perfectly. I've been to this place on several occasions, and I have always been very, very satisfied with the food, the service, and the atmosphere. (Cross-posted)

Yelp
Last visit was a disappointment, hope the new owner is not cutting corners. Chicken Parm was awful , manager? was less than concerned.

Melissa M.

Yelp
The food was really good, I can't wait to go back. & there were soooo many options! I had the garlic shrimp appetizer then a seafood pasta, so yummy.

Yelp
Since our memorable dinner's back in 2018, we have been dying to eat here again and so husband and I finally made our way there last night. We got a table right away as we got there just before 6 and being a weekday, it was not too busy. The tables are socially distanced and we felt comfortable when we first sat, although after spending 1.5 hours that seemed to never end, I can say that I am not sure if and when I will return. First off, the service was slow, I mean SUPER SLOW. The server was way too busy chatting with some patrons (that could have been friends/regular patrons), forgot to put in one of the main dishes (btw we only ordered 2 main dishes, no appetizers, so it was a very simple order). And so imagine sitting at the table and waiting for over 45 minutes between the only 2 dishes we ordered was quite a patience tester. The Eggplant Parm is one of their best dishes and I highly recommend it. The tiramisu is to die for and is so light that it just melts in your mouth. Chocolate Torte on the other hand was one of the most unpleasant dessert I have had in a very long time. It felt like the cake was sitting in the fridge for over a week, it was gummy, dry and both of us could not eat it beyond 1 bite. But what made us really uncomfortable was that she would not wear her mask most of the time. She was talking to other patrons without her mask and removed her mask anytime she was behind the bar counter. Not only her, another older gentleman who could have been the owner, did not wear the mask for even 1 second in the entire 1.5 hours we were there. He did have the mask hanging from one ear, but not sure how that would have been of any help? Now I know in these challenging pandemic times, we all need to come together as a community and support the restaurants and other local business. But I believe that it is also the restaurant's responsibility to be mindful of the rules and regulations that have been set in place to keep not only the diners but also the employees safe. In my opinion and based on my experiences in the past year of dining/takeout at various restaurants, Bocelli's has failed to not only give a good service, but to also have been absolutely irresponsible in the way they have been conducting their business amidst an ongoing pandemic.

Yelp
Our favorite restaurant in the city! We were there a few weeks ago and can't wait to go back. We weren't sure what to order and our waitress, Karen, was so helpful in helping us decide! She practically knew the menu by heart and made many recommendations. I finally decided on the Chicken Orvieto with fusilli and my husband got the calamari with angel hair. They were both to die for!!! Karen was so attentive, making sure that our drinks were always refreshed and plenty of bread on the table. She was so friendly!! Ambiance was old school, but charming at the same time! Can't wait to go back.

Steven M.

Yelp
Delicious food. Enjoyed the fruitti di mare and chicken florentine. Wonderful tiramisu. Our server, Wendy, was very nice.

Yelp
I've been holding work events here for years. The food is always delicious, the staff makes you feel like you are family, and the old school Italian American vibe is super charming.

Sarah K.

Yelp
We drove 2 hours to come back to Bocelli's after 15 years and the food was just like we remembered, delicious! Our server, Wendy, was excellent, couldn't have been better! Thank you, Wendy!

Yelp
Depends on who is cooking and what you order. I will never order the Sicilian pizza again. Had to throw it out when we got back to NH.

Front D.

Yelp
First time coming here and sad to say that our visit was disappointing and we will probably never visit again . For the price you pay the Portions are very small and have no flavor. chicken looked as if it had been boiled and thrown in a sauce (tendons and fatty chunks ). The service was horrible from the second we walked in. when given the reservation name they all looked around as if we were speaking a completely different language. (we speak english) i ordered a drink and the waitress completely dismissed my request and still put it on our bill?? the soda comes from a can and the water was served in a dirty cup with a bendy straw The appetizers were previously frozen mozzarella triangles with a jar sauce on the side. nothing seemed to be freshly made. i suggest working on your customer service and using fresh ingredients, your guest can taste the difference especially if they are italian (which most of medford is ) The only saving grace to the dinner was the cheesecake.

kathleen h.

Yelp
Omg get the homemade bread! It's so ridiculously good! Also the soup, pizza and pasta are all delicious- this place is awesome! No complaints whatsoever

Emily J.

Yelp
Ordered takeout, took 90 minutes. Uber eats driver took the wrong order. When I called the restaurant and asked for a refund the manager refused to do it right away, told me she was too busy, and hung up on me. Went to the restaurant (yes, I went down there) and she gave me attitude for 10 minutes until giving me a refund. Why is it so hard to give someone a refund who didn't get their food? I would stay away until they get a new manager.

Yelp
Great service, delicious pasta, and the best espresso martinis. Casual, friendly ambiance. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Don't go here if you are feeling fancy. This is the perfect little neighborhood Italian place that's old with personality. Antipasto: big ( for 3) and yummy. Salads : Fresh! Gnocchi: like made by grandma in your kitchen. My hubby loved his veal dish. I don't eat meat so I can't say Chocolate lava cake was sweet!!! It was my bday so it was allowed lol The young lady who served us was kind, with a beautiful smile, checked on us regularly and gave us space as well. Price was very reasonable! A win! We'll be back!

Ren D.

Yelp
Went there for dinner this week. They had no air conditioning! How can a restaurant operate that way. The food was great. I felt so bad for the waitress, she was very sweaty. Will never go there in summer again.
google avatar

Brett S.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in for a lunch date and were wonderfully surprised with everything. It's an old school Italian place that feels like it's always been there. Inviting with great food, special recognition goes to our waitress Anna who went above and beyond to give the entire time a personal touch. We'll absolutely be back.

Yelp
This area is known for old school Italian restaurants and this is exactly what Bocelli's is all about. Let's start with the old part- this place doesn't look like it's changed in decades and the ambience is what you'd call casual. There's a cozy bar area with booths, another connected room with tables, and and more seating downstairs as well. Our service was friendly, efficient and genuine. Old school means it's traditional Italian cooking- nothing overly creative, just deliciously prepared fresh food. The wine choices are mostly by the bottle with a few house wines available by the glass. I tried a glass of the house Montepulciano which was nothing special. A modest selection of bottled beers is also available. Bocelli's has a wide menu of traditional Italian fare including apps, salads, chicken, veal, seafood and pasta dishes mostly leaning toward the South of Italy. There were some interesting daily specials too. We learned afterwards, there was also pizza offered on a different menu- but you have to ask for that menu! We had pasta Bolognese which had a delicious hardy meat sauce. But the highlight of the night was my Pasta Frutti di Mare which stood in stark contrast to the same dish ordered in a couple of other Italian restaurants in neighboring towns. Those other Frutti's featured scant portions of seafood I finished in a few minutes. The Bocelli's Frutti was FABULOUS- loaded high with mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp and some fish. Easily 3-4X the seafood of these other restaurants. Absolutely delicious- offered in either a light red or white wine sauce. My red sauce was great. Our service was prompt, attentive and friendly. Don't expect any long conversations with your server on a busy night, and you'll be served well. Old school Italian done right.

Yelp
Great food and service. I love the Marsala and the chicken parm is amazing. My absolute favorite place in Medford.
google avatar

Jenna K.

Yelp
Yummy, home style Italian food in a rustic, comfortable setting. Some of my family's favorites include the chicken parmesan, chicken marsala, and chicken piccata. Make sure you try their homemade fusilli pasta! The tiramisu, chocolate torte, and crème caramel (flan) are all tasty choices to round out the meal.

Marianne S.

Yelp
Terrible, terrible, terrible. We LOVED this place and went often for many years. My siblings & our spouses went regularly because it reminded us of our deceased mother's Italian cooking. BUT THE OWNERSHIP HAS CHANGED AND SO HAS THE FOOD. The salad was always a favorite. When we went last night it was horrible and the dressing was worse. The dressing used to remind us of our family's but now it is uneatable - vinegary, spicy, etc. The beef tips were also difficult to eat and 2 of those who ordered them, had half eaten portions left on our plates because we could not swallow them. Tough, poor quality beef. The spumoni was wrapped in chocolate? minimal raspberry sauce, whipped cream?. It wasn't true spumoni. We made reservations but the table was not set up for us even though the place was empty (now I know why). The service was equally terrible-extremely slow, inattentive, forgetful, they did not write any of our orders down and made mistakes. We are very sad that we can't go there anymore. It was a regular place for our group.

Tina G.

Yelp
The new owner was horrible; she wouldn't accept my gift certificate with a remaining balance slightly under $50 for a pizza & 2 cannolis. She told me she's operating under a new business name & no longerBocelli's...I pointed out that it was funny considering the pizza box says BOCELLI's. She offered to honor only half of my gift certificate which I said was ridiculous! She then offered for me to call the old owner Nick or his attorney to get my money back. I told her that's all figured out in the sale & she can call him & get it from him. She then said that the former owner Nick gave out thousands of gift certificates & she's not honoring them. I told her that's just not good patronage & tossed my gift certificate in her face & told her I WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN!! I thought the public should know. This once was a great Italian restaurant with a caring, sweet & respectable owner who treated everyone with courtesy and respect; now certainly it has changed with a young woman who clearly doesn't know anything about courtesy, respect & the restaurant business. Tina, service industry professional

Robert B.

Yelp
First time me and my wife Friday afternoon food was great. Service was unbelievable friendliest waitress, and so funny Karen will be back with the rest of the family.

Diane C.

Yelp
We've been going here for many years but a recent visit was disappointing. Portions very small and sauce watery and not like it used to be. Service was very slow despite the fact that there were not many tables filled for a Saturday night. The waitress was terrible! She must have had a cold and was sniffling which made me very uncomfortable. I'm over this restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Bocelli's in Medford is as the French would say " Une des meilleures tables, vaut le voyage ". Or, "Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey". It truly was. Atmosphere? Old school Italian charm with a family style vibe. The waitresses act like relatives and sit down with you if you're having trouble deciding letting you know their favorite dishes. I had no trouble deciding. If Pork Chops with Vinegar Peppers is on the menu, they're mine. It was the best version I've ever had. I relished how the tangy vinegar peppers cut the fattiness of the perfectly cooked chops. The rosted potatoes were fork scrapingly.crunchy on the outside and creamy mashed potato fluffy on the inside. My girlfriend got the Chicken Marsala, and even though she said mine was better , I believe she was fibbing. Even the mushrooms burst with that sweet Marsala wine goodness. It's your choice of a half dozen different homemade pastas. The overstuffed cannolis were freshly piped and dipped in chocolate chips. I saved the first item I tried for last because of its brilliance. The house made bread was absolutely devine. Trust me, you'll ask for more. I'm already planning next visit.

Yelp
Great service and food!! Veal chop Marsala with fresh pasta was delish! Also their shrimp & lobster risotto!! Love trying out their specials!

Jonathan N.

Yelp
Neighborhood gem. Great Italian food Loved the atmosphere. Good alcohol selection. Recommend the chicken Parmesan

Mary G.

Yelp
We ordered for takeout a Margherita pizza and asked them to put pepperoni on top of it. Instead, they loaded it with other cheeses, drowning the whole experience of eating a Margherita pizza. A Margherita should only have the slices of mozzarella, not every other cheese added to it. If we didn't know better, we would swear that it was already a pepperoni pizza, and then they decided to add the mozzarella, the basil and the tomatoes after somebody called for a margarita pizza with pepperoni on it. The tomatoes weren't cut appropriately, either.

Steve M.

Yelp
Not good at all. The food and service were not good. They forget our calamari., never put it in. Our dinner never came out and one waitress was already dropping off the check . When our dinner finally came out it came out one at a time for a party of 6. My niece found a sticky note under her pizza.I got the tortellini which was cold and didn't taste good. I understand it was a busy night but come on 3 waitress to one table Will never go back
