Tucked in a suburban shopping center, this cozy spot serves up a tasty blend of Caribbean comfort food, vegan delights, and creative cocktails that feel like a tropical escape.
"Unless you’re fortunate enough to have somebody’s enterprising auntie on speed dial, Caribbean food is still relatively few and far between in Northern California. Thankfully, Bodega Kitchen and Cocktails provides a sampling across the region, including traditional plates of beans, rice, maduros, a selection of Caribbean-spiced proteins like jerk chicken and grilled pork, and doubles heaped with curried goat or chickpeas, for a plant-based option. Tucked away in the suburban Greenhaven area of Sacramento, one step inside, Bodega takes care with its details, especially when it comes to its condiments: empanadas and burgers are served with a requisite mix of mayonnaise and ketchup found across the Caribbean, and the briny heat of Haitian pikliz accompanies their fish tacos." - Tamerra Griffin
"Open since late summer at 6401 Riverside Boulevard in Sacramento. Bodega Kitchen and Cocktails showcases a broader, pan-Caribbean menu. Bodega’s cubano might be the greatest hit so far; Bodega’s version opts for Jamaican coco bread. Another standout for fall weather is the plate of mussels — brothy and fragrant with an emulsion of coconut, lemongrass, cilantro, and garlic. Hearty vegan options abound, including a Trinidiadian street food called “doubles,” consisting of turmeric flatbread, curried chickpeas, and pickled mango, and red onion. Spiced dishes are cut with cool “island wines” from the Greek and Canary islands." - Vanessa Labi
