The Best Restaurants and Bars in Portland’s Foster-Powell | Eater Portland

"Bodega culture in Portland isn’t nearly on the same level as places like New York City, but this neighborhood market and sub shop brings some of that mom-and-pop spirit to the city (sans a bodega cat, unfortunately). The sandwich counter stacks ingredients into subs like the Waste Management (roast beef, arugula, provolone, Mama Lil’s Peppers, garlic sauce) and the NYC staple Chopped Cheese (ground beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, served hot). In addition to the requisite corner store snacks and drinks, Bodega has a grab-and-go cooler full of items like chicken noodle soup, hummus, and deli salads. House-made treats like cookies, rocky road brownies, and baklava are unmissable in a counter case at checkout." - Nathan Williams

Google
Very yummy sandwiches. The ingredients are fresh and there are great sandwich options for whatever you’re feeling for that day. There is a whole section in the fridge of desserts, I got the tiramisu and it was fantastic! Any other needs (drinks, chips, etc.) can be met at this store because it is also a convenience store. Will be returning!

We ordered the chopped cheese & the Adriana. Food was delicious! Big portion. Friendly staff. Clean environment

My favorite build your own. Sliced sourdough, ham and cheese, lettuce, pepperoncini, onion, pickles, chipotle mayo 🥪🔥👌

Google
I have not had one sandwich at Bodega PDX that wasn't amazing. I've tried half the menu and not a single disappointment. Fresh ingredients and super unique tastes. (like the Johnny Sacks). The staff are always friendly and the market is never short of new things to try.

Google
Very cute exterior and interior decor/aesthetic, but after all the hype I heard about the sandwiches online, my hopes were high and sadly found it underwhelming. Another reviewer Weslee said it best, bread is dry and horrendous and way too much bread to contents ratio. The potato salad I got was delicious and that is a redeeming factor. I got the club sandwich.

When this little neighborhood convenience store in the Southeast Foster road area changed hands I thought okay it's going to stay the same. Boy was I wrong. The new owner created some magic with installing a sandwich shop within the store. You can choose one of the delicious stationery sandwiches from there menu or you can create your own. I always ask for extra arugula and they know how to please me. The ingredients are all fresh and quite tasty with just the right amount of condiments. For the amount of creativity that goes into the sandwiches the price points are excellent. My taste buds are consistently satisfied. Oh and I can't forget to mention the baked goods. There's a fine selection that the owner's mother prepares with love. Some of the best baklava I've ever had, but her chocolate chip cookies are extraordinary and that's what I'm having tonight. Do yourself a favor and stop by if you're in the hood, you won't be disappointed. Plus a shout out to the employees that are helpful and always leave me with a smile.

Google
I used to live closer to Bodega PDX and would go there often and whatever sandwich I got was always amazing. Months later I've gone back and I can report that it's just as good. They're always consistent. The combo and ratio of ingredients makes the most delightful sandwich. I've been to other delis here in Portland and Bodega is still my #1. They're also one of the few places that has UTZ chips. When they're in stock, get a bag. Also get the tiramisu when they have it! It's so good.

Yelp
This place is sooo delicious if you're considering coming here do it. I got a chopped cheese with vegan cheese and it was amazing. In second grade I pantsed someone and I feel really bad about it
google avatar

Yelp
The bread ruins it. Actual filling is decent (skimpy on the meats). But the way too thick and dry and stale (every time) bread just ruins it. I just can't do it.
google avatar

Yelp
I made it back to try another sandwich on the menu. The Carmela was my 2nd choice on my first visit. It was beautiful upon opening! For bread, I went with the Parmesan, but I wish I hadn't. The sandwich was pretty salty, like a muffuletta in a way, but the Parmesan added more saltiness in my opinion. The flavors were almost overwhelming like good salt & vinegar chips, leaving my mouth a little raw or dehydrated. I still enjoyed it! The peppers are delicious on any sandwich it seems. I'll try another sandwich. I did notice on this visit that many items in the aisles don't have prices and that was bothersome. I didn't want to grab a candy bar and hear some ridiculous price.

Yelp
Real cool store. Has a lot of snack items that other stores don't carry. The sandwiches are really good. Got them two days in a row. Friendly staff so far

Yelp
I've been driving past this brightly colored spot for ages and today was the day I desperately needed a solid sando to slay a well-earned hangover. The fella behind the counter was helpful and after we ordered, he encouraged us to walk around. Tons of beverage options and a grab n go case full of sides to pair with your Sammich. There isn't much for seating besides a picnic table out front and is very no frills but you clearly go for the food. Fluffy bread, flavorful, huge and doesn't skimp on meat. Already looking forward to heading back and trying all the goodness.

Yelp
You must try the sandos. The names are hilarious too, from "The Sopranos" TV show. Love it! Sando was good too. Friendly service can't believe it took me this long to try the place.

Yelp
The bodega is a great place to get a sandwich, pick up beer, a snack or ice cream. They truly have it all. Also, the staff are really friendly and willing to customize any sandwich you want. My favorite thing there is the Macaroni Salad.... I think it's the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the eclectic selection of drinks and snacks. I left with two bags full of goodies. I went for the Cannolis and had to try the chopped cheese Sandwhich this time. It was soo delicious. It's basically a burger Sandwhich. I paired it with some ghost pepper chips and an agua fresca. The cannolis were the best I've had in Pdx. I usually make them myself because my Italian hubby doesn't like the ones we've tried as much. These were spot one. The filling, the pistachios and heath bar toppings put it over the top for us. I also loved that they make them with the mini chocolate chips. Classic goodness. They reminded me of an Italian Deli in New Mexico and the bakeries in New York.

Yelp
Ordered a "chopped cheese" and it's no cheese on it??? Like wtf. Plus they never answer when you call them back
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of novelty snacks( beware the $9 chocolate bar- prices weren't super clearly marked-but it was for a gift basket I was putting together so that was ok)... great sandwiches- we got the Carmela ( kiddo said, Yummy! ) and gabagool- the vinaigrette runs strong but still tasty - I subbed roast beef for the ham/ salami- although next time will sub out the prosciutto for roast beef) -very satisfying- there was also the turkey BLT ordered ( eaten too fast to photo) but would probably go with Bobby's Holiday next time ( for a turkey sandwich pick)...
google avatar

Anon Y.

Yelp
I've only had the Gabagool once, but my criticism is this, and I can't stress it enough: the bread here SUCKS. Maybe there are other options that play better off that foundational flaw, but I won't hazard another try to find out.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Stepped in for the first time and, duh, it really is a store. All I've thought of in the past are the sandwiches. Which are massive and very neatly layered, well-proportioned, very filling/ Quality ingredients. My only quibble is the condiments sort of overpowered the contents. This isn't a place for subtlety, and that's just fine.
google avatar

Hector V.

Yelp
Place is awesome and they have a little of everything and the food is delicious and the people who work there are so friendly. Highly recommend checking it out if you're in town.

Christina F.

Yelp
Great deli Sandwiches such a huge variety. My go to Sandwich is Johnny Sacks on Parmesan add Mama lils and pickled onions, toasted - so good. Yummy grab and go options. Love the convenience.
google avatar

Yelp
NOPE! Unsanitary! I came in to grab a sandwich. The menu had many fun items to try. I asked the lady what was popular, she was nice and made some recommendations. Here is my issue; she was wearing rubber gloves the whole time, helped a customer at the register, TOOK HIS CASH, made change, while dealing the the touch screen, then half-heartedly (for 3 seconds) washed her hands while wearing the same gloves and started making a sandwich. I told her if she had took off the gloves, washed her hands and put on a new pair I would have stayed. I've worked in food service forever, that is not sanitary AT ALL.
google avatar

Ehsan S.

Yelp
I wasn't a huge fan. Maybe I was hungry and grumpy. I ordered a sandwich. Gave a tip on a $15 sandwich. Was told it'd be 10 mins. Cool. No problem. Someone else came in after me, ordered his sandwich. He seemed like a regular, and was chatting with the staff. After about 10 minutes the guy that ordered after me got his sandwich first. WTF. After another 10 minutes I got my sandwich. Not cool yo. Got home and took my first bite. No bueno. Tasted like day old bread. Meat was good, that's about it. I could have made a better sandwich at home. Not going back.
google avatar

Jade W.

Yelp
This was delicious! Cute little spot, and the food came out faster than I expected. I recommend the waste management sandwich. The sandwiches are pretty big, probably enough to share with someone. Friendly staff. Worth the try!

Sofia D.

Yelp
Tried a grab n' go sandwich the first time and didn't like it. Went back a second time to try a fresh sandwich (Bodega BLT) and could see the long hair through the wrapping. I was still determined to try the sandwich, but it was mostly lettuce drenched in mayo.
google avatar

Autumn S.

Yelp
Pretty let down, customer service wasn't very good and the sandwiches were lack. I've gone to Bodega's in other cities before, there's good atmosphere and market and this lacked both of these. The sandwich was mid.

Amy S.

Yelp
I come to the Bodega on a semi regular basis to get a vegan sandwich which they make fresh for you. They are pretty good and affordable considering the cost of a Subway sandwich for example. They have a lot of different snacks for sale as well that you won't find at an ordinary convenience store. Employees are really nice. Good vibes there.
google avatar

Roman S.

Yelp
Honestly, somewhat confused by the photos as I could not tell the bread to other ingredients ratio having some consistency. The prices are now higher by about $2 then a few months back. So for $12 I decided to try the Turkey Bacon Sub. It was a lot of bread and not as much turkey or other ingredients in the middle. It tasted fine but, for $12 I kind of expected a bit more. It was just not really worth the money (at new prices) for what you get given other sub options in the city. The other part of the Bodega, the convenience store part, has a nice selection of products.
google avatar

Violet C.

Yelp
Always a stop on our walk home on a fun weekend night. The sandwiches are Delicious. There are always fun savory and sweet discoveries. I can always count on you to have my cracker combos and a wide array of CBD beverages. Keep on keeping on!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
After hearing people rave about this place, we decided to take it for a test ride. I believe that they misunderstood the phrase "under promise and over deliver". Perhaps some people enjoy a thicc roll, dusted with the essence of ingredients listed on a menu, I however am not one of them. The cool part about bodega sandwiches in New York is the absurd ratio of ingredients to bread. I'd suggest the owners pay a visit. Great service and atmosphere,If I wanted a ghost of a sandwich I'd hop on a sub and float on down to the Titanic.

Tyler D.

Yelp
Honestly, I've had good sandwiches here before, but lately, the service has taken a nose dive and the BREAD is awful and stale. They must be saving money by getting day-olds from the bakery.
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
Here we are In a ruse full of strangers Standing feet apart Where your sign couldn't be seen Well, I have to follow you Though you follow new rules That won't stop my lovin' food I can't stay away Blaming it all on the nice Bodega Singin' Bee Gees songs Slingin' Waste Management Parmesan I'll Bodega Even if it takes forever I'll Bodega Even if it takes a lifetime Somehow I feel inside You never ever left my side Make it like it was before Eating where the taste is sublime Taste is sublime Blamin' it all on the nice Bodega Slingin' them sweet Subs To this crazy, crazy town
google avatar

Coey J.

Yelp
One of the best sub sandwiches I've ever had in Portland. This sandwich shop is located inside of a mini market. They sell fresh hummus, soups, tuna salad, potato salad, macaroni salad and more! Definitely follow their recommendations, you can tell they take pride in their flavor combinations. Only a couple tables inside, they have super fast service so grabbing to go is easy and convenient. Don't leave without trying the garlic sauce!
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
I have been going here for years but somehow never have I written a review. Well, here it is. They are overall very good. Their sandwiches are always good and their deli case with Lebanese dishes is outstanding. The only thing I personally find unappealing is their beer selection. I know that some love it but for me I always stand there looking for something that I would like and almost always leave to buy beer somewhere else. But that is purely a personal taste kind of thing so I would highly recommend them for anybody looking for a wide selection of interesting products and great take away food.
google avatar

S B.

Yelp
Bread is very thick and dry- I was not a fan of this sandwich. Lacked flavor due to how thick and dry the bread was. Not sure which brand of mayo is used, but definitely not a good one (IMO).

Peyton T.

Yelp
Wow, that was good! BLT with avocado aioli. The guy making the sandwich did so with so much precision, perfect ratio in every bite. Flabbergasted that I have lived in SE Portland my whole life and never stopped in. I'll be back... probably tomorrow.

James W.

Yelp
Great spot, probably the best neighborhood convenience store in portland. Miami Vice on toasted Parmesan bread is a solid sando rec
google avatar

Marc W.

Yelp
It's fine. Actually the sandwich ingredients are pretty good the problem is the bread. The overly huge, dry and not tasty bread. We both ate 1/2, next day transferred to store bought sourdough and liked it 10x more. I want this place to succeed- but they need better bread!
google avatar

Elan A.

Yelp
Great sandwiches with bread filled to capacity. If you're looking for a nice grinder, check them out
google avatar

Graphix G.

Yelp
Overpriced and underwhelming sandwich. My order was wrong and I didn't feel like paying an extra buck each for a few olives or peppercini. I asked for it pressed - not done. I asked for sourdough - I got white bread (or something so close to white bread it didn't register as anything else besides that). The amount of meat on it was a slice or two and meager. The vibe is always a bit like "why are you here?" and not that welcoming. The prices have gone up across the board and if you want frozen yogurt a small is $6. I've been here a few times and this was the worst so I guess I'll just stop going. Bummer as it's close to my place and I love the overall branding too. I don't mind paying for great food but this wasn't it.
google avatar

Vuong T.

Yelp
Built my own sandwich with buffalo chicken meat, all of the veggies except for tomato and chiptole mayo. Its part of a convenience store so you can pick up some booze or your favorite cbd drink with it. Got it on wheat bread and it was big and thicc
google avatar

Ruby C.

Yelp
This was a cool spot to grab a quick sandwich, a bag of chips and a drink. Great selection of vegan spreads/toppings/etc. I hope they expand their vegan meat selection but overall def recommend. Friendly service! Seems like a family business with Mom and Son working the counter. Next time I'm grabbing some of that homemade Baklava!
google avatar

Emily Paige C.

Yelp
Bodega BLT My bestie and I tried this place today. Staff was very nice. Store has lots of variety. Cute spot. But it took them an hour to make our sandwiches. Given that it was around 130pm so we understood when they said it would take 20 min. That's cool. They didn't have avacado, which we asked for. Again, we understood. No worries. Finally got our sandwiches. Got home and there was no bacon on our BLTs. It comes with turkey too. But no bacon to be found. So an hour wait and didn't get what we ordered. Rant over.
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Hands down the best deli style sandwiches in town. I can't recommend these enough. I'm happy no matter what I order. I'm looking forward to visiting in person soon, so far just been using Grubhub. Get at it!
google avatar

Malia S.

Yelp
Our favorite is the Adriana, best sandwiches ever. I was actually surprised when I took a bite of my first one. I guess I was expecting a basic sub but it was so delicious, our favorite addiction.
google avatar

Jovan D.

Yelp
I love the Bodega! Huge yummy sandwiches, drink options galore, hummus and sauce options in the cold case and ice-cream! What more could you ask for?
google avatar

Donna D.

Yelp
It's just little mini mart that makes Amazing sandwiches!!! The are really good. I recommend calling in your order because there's really nowhere to sit and eat, We had the Gabagool and the waste managment, we loved them we could only eat half so next time we will split one. Either way it's worth a try!!
google avatar

Teala A.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in SE (sorry East Side), plus deli goods from Bar Maven, an insane beer selection, and firewood for those chilly pdx evenings. I love this spot beyond measure. I swear it's not because it's 2 blocks from mi casa...

Samantha B.

Yelp
Wow!! This place is dope! There's an abundance of snacks, drinks, deli items and more to choose from. I ordered the BLT, the Cheese Chop and the Philly. They were all ! The customer service exceeded my expectations when they forgot one of my sandwiches. I didn't even notice, they called me and ended up delivering it to the park I was at. I will without a doubt be back and spreading the word!
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
Such a bummer. Bread was stale turkey was nonexistent. A disgrace upon the New York namesake.
google avatar

Eldon K.

Yelp
I don't know why it takes 20 minutes to make at Philly cheese steak sandwich. Then people that came in after us got their sandwiches before us and then we still had to wait ten minutes to get our food. We get the sandwiches and they were so hot and greasy that decided to wait to get home and eat mine and my friend ate his in the car but it was so F$&KING messy!!
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Good sandwiches. Friendly staff. I always like looking through all of the beverages that they have while I wait.
google avatar

P. C.

Yelp
Are you seeking a solid deli sandwich joint you will return to when a loaded sub is an unavoidable craving? Bodega might be your place with a few needed quantifiers in place. Great subs, not the place you want to enjoy them at because its a super market on a busy street . Let's assume your not the slob eating it in your car I totally would be if I didn't temporarily live close by. These loaded beauties would suffice the average on the go worker but if you can wait until you get home this is where they get societal. Turn your oven or toastier implement to 375. Wait 2 min. Unwrap and insert sub into the oven for optimal bread performance. Two minutes tops. ((We love bahnmi for the loving crunchy bread texture filled with pickled and ungracious yet beautiful meat filling.)) This is NOT that kind of place but if you have the patience to get one home and lightly toast in the oven, you will have upped your sub game by 150%. CRunchy soft bread (thanks to you ) with their fixings is tier-one sandwich action. As a chef i always enjoy going the extra mil for my customers and my own food, If you agree or dont that's cool but this pace gets 5 stars for effort/quality/value. It's up to us to make it epic! Who's with me?
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
A damn fine true Bodega style sandwich. The bread is really good and these sando's are really filling. I like the waste management. I like to call ahead, and every single time my food is ready in 10. This is also a part of my neighborhood market, and they have nice selections. Tillamook ice cream and a nice wine selection. Not your average mini-mart. Oh and they have Greek style baked goods. They do not disappoint.
google avatar

Cody H D.

Yelp
Awwwwww yisssssss! Damn good sandwiches from this little east coast-inspired spot. The sides (white cheddar mac & cheese, salmon chowder, etc) are way above average as well. The service is great as well, they are open nice and late...in fact there's nothing about Bodega I don't like!

Hanna E.

Yelp
This place is incredible. I had a build your own with lentil field roast plant based meat and the mac n cheese. The bread was amazing, the sandwich super tasty and filling, the Mac and cheese was garlicky perfection. Also got a kombucha. What a treat!
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
First time in Portland was craving a good sandwich saw this place on Yelp reviews looked good the menu looked even better sopranos themed sandwiches me and my wife both got the gabagool they were fire. Seriously come check this spot out they have a lot of local goods and beers in the store too
