I can confidently say that sometimes a review, however glowing, just doesn't do justice to the subject! And this is one if those subjects, because no matter what I write, you really must go and sample what must be one of the best experiences you will ever have at any winery anywhere in the world.
The four of us had initially made reservations for lunch, but changed that to a wine tasting because lunch and dinner back in Yecla on the same day was asking too much! Absolutely not an issue for our hosts.
We met at 11.00 for a viewing of a really professionally produced history of the bodega. Commentary was in the form of the two current owners chatting to each other, and above all, their dedication and love for what they, their father and grandfather have put together came through so strongly. Yecla is probably unique in its micro climate combined with its geological features - as Bodega Barahonda have discovered, presenting the ideal scene for the successful cultivation of a number of different grapes.
Between the visit to a vineyard within a short walk of the inspiring building and the tasting, we enjoyed a virtual reality presentation - again combining history and processes involved in the production cycle, as part of the conducted tour of the winery at work. All really very impressive.
Then to the main event! Accompanied by a selection of delicious tapa we were introduced to their white organic verdejo and Barrica, (monastrell, syrah and petit verdot) before upping the game to the very sumptuous Summum ( 100 % minastrell) and finally, creme de la creme, Lualma ( monastrell, syrah, tintorera).
Throughout our visit, we were royally looked after - a big " thank you", with a special thank you to Sandra.
