Bodega Solera - Review - Eixample - Barcelona - The Infatuation

"The folks fromBar Muthave done it again with Bodega Solera. Consider it like the scrappy cousin of the family who loves to drink and isn’t trying to hide it. The vibe is Andalusian tavern-meets-Barcelona tapas bar with loud flamenco music, and diners who are even louder. Adding to the energy are walls full of vintage 1960s and ’70s photography—passport portraits and weddings long forgotten—and more bottles than you can count (the wine list has more than 1,700 labels, all natural), plus food that flows plentifully. There are platters of Iberian charcuteries and stinky cheeses, tangy red peppers stuffed with smooth cod loin, and a tomato tartare that is deliciously sharp and umami-filled thanks to generous splashes of sherry vinegar and yondu." - Isabelle Kliger

Saturday night in Barcelona after completing Cami de Ronda route and I was looking to have a nice glass of wine and few tapas. The atmosphere of this place brought me in as I thought people were happily enjoying chatting over a drink. It is unfortunate that I am shading a negative light on this establishment. I was shown a wine list, but after some long wait I was served a very small glass of wine, € 6.50, I ordered Iberian ham € 15 and as suggested, tomato bread €3.50, I was served with about 10 grams of ham, you have to admire the skill how thinly sliced it was and few slices of toasted bread! The ham was so thin you could see through!! OK, we know that Barcelona and everything is expensive, but! your service of portions has crossed the line of decency! As a customer we don’t mind to pay for the quality but we don’t like to be blatantly treated like this, it feels like an insult to your dignity!! You don’t represent Catalunya culture, you are shamelessly driven by profit, charging 5 * prices for mediocre sizes of food. It’s not right. I do travel to Barcelona for work and I’ll see you again in hope to give you a better review. B

Overrated and overpriced; there are plenty of other nice bars around so no need for this one. They bring these wines very happily showing off knowledge and stuff... and then when it comes to pay the bill you wonder why they showed you these expensive wines and not others. I can see some more negative reviews commenting specifically about that. Then, while drinking it, they are very pushy asking if you want anything else right when you have a bit of wine leftz making you pressured to leave or order something else. In places like that one can't relax cos you feel they're there to take your money rather than to provide a service.

We went there twice already and loved it! Very friendly staff who have been very helpful to help choose the best dishes. Our favorite are the egg plant and the chicken! Must try! The pulpo was also very nice and surprising. For dessert we had the chocolate cake. Definitely a great place to get a wine or vermut and enjoy tapas in a very Spanish atmosphere.

Amazing vibe, so good we came back again for a second night in a row. Bartenders gave wonderful recommendations, food was divine and wine was delicious. Will be back next time in Barcelona.

I am surprised this is only 4 stars overall, I thought the food, wine and service were all great. I see some negative comments have been about the price but this was a work meal I never saw the bill so I can't comment on that! The wines are natural but the one we had tasted very similar to 'normal' wine of a very good standard (I know a lot of natural wines can be a bit of an acquired taste but this was not the case here) The food was all full of flavour and there were plenty of vegetarian options (and i think they can accommodate vegan if you ask), lots of creative dishes rather than just standard traditional tapas. I didn't take photos on this occasion and cannot comment on dog friendliness (normally I am with dogs but not on this trip!)

Lovely food, beautiful design, friendly service. Everything we ordered was tasty and well prepared, we had some vermut beer, the ensaladilla rusa, tartar de tomate and the alcachofas in romesco sauce. Everything was delicious. The portions were good, for us two, this was enough to fill us up. We were served some complementary olives when we sat down and we finished up with a fantastic flan de queso. Rico rico rico!

After a very hot day we decided not to venture too far from our hotel. The bright green doors of Bodega Solera were inviting and we were after an authentic tapas experience. We were seated at an island with a very pleasant man behind it who was prepping all kinds of wonderful dishes whilst onlookers mouths watered including ours. He was knowledgeable and friendly and inviting. We had some plump olives with salty anchovies, a melt-in-the-mouth beef stew with mushrooms served on crisps (strange but delicious), artichokes with romanesca sauce sprinkled with toasted hazelnuts (out of this world for a carnivore) Iberico ham (the best I’ve ever had….my word) tomato bread and white wine. We then finished with a custard tart like sweet and a crispy flaky roll filled with a type of crème Anglaise type filling, a wonderful end to our meal. It all came to €51 and were were happy and full. What struck me the most was the homeliness of it all - plastic containers with prepped ingredients with labels that were put expertly together. And I knew then, from being a home cook and food lover myself, that every morsel would turn into a street festival in my mouth, just like mama used to make….there was love in every bite. Highly recommended for every visitor who wants an authentic tapas experience.
