How to Spend a Perfect Weekend in San Juan, Puerto Rico

"For old-school fine dining I go to Bodegas Compostela, which has been doing it right for 30 years — it's a true gem, a traditional Spanish restaurant with a solid wine cellar, and because they're open on Mondays it's where you go as a chef in your best Sunday clothes and roll out happy and buzzed." - Paxx Caraballo Moll

21 Best Restaurants in Puerto Rico | Condé Nast Traveler

"Bodegas Compostela is sophisticated, and almost museum-like, with high ceilings, sculptural chandeliers, and modern art. On the way to the dining room, you'll walk past the impressive and rather intimidating wine cellar, showcasing several-hundred bottles of (primarily Spanish) wine, but the warm, laid-back staff offset the upscale vibes. The Galician menu is simple yet decadent, from the tapas—bites of perfectly char-grilled octopus, smoked sausages wrapped in potato slices—to the slow-roasted cochinillo (suckling pig), which had the crispiest, crunchiest skin imaginable." - Kris Fordham

Google
Over priced menu for average food. Seriously the ones that keep giving 5 are you serious? I wouldn’t pay half the amount for that food. I know food trucks and stands with more flavor. Only wine menu by the bottle. No menu for wine by the glass and no cocktail menu. No ambiance. I rather spend my crypto elsewhere. Sorry, chef suggestion less paprika and just a little S&P. The ones that say beat restaurant in PR doesn’t even make too 50 for me.

Google
A very special and refined dining destination. The owner/chef partners are very conscientious and careful to ensure a refined and customer-focused experience, and as a result I have been told that this restaurant is a frequent and favorite spot for many of the local businessmen and women of the San Juan area. The menu selections for our party of four, although a bit on the pricey side, were outstanding in preparation , presentation, freshness, and seasoning. I had the Bronzino, a special for today, which was expertly cooked moist on the inside, and with a seared crunchy skin. My wife had the octopus which was soft but not mushy. Our tuna appetizer was super-fresh and all dishes were nicely sized but not at all overwhelming. The wine list is extensive, and our waiter recommended an excellent Spanish wine that was a very nice blend that mated well with our entrees. Evidently their wine importing was the original core of their business and they expanded to add a Spanish dining experience over the years. If you want to experience a low-key, refined and high quality restaurant focused on good food and good wine for the local area (with no attempt to cater to the tourists only), then this is your place.

Absolutely mesmerizing and gorgeous food, service and overall experience.

Google
Hands down the best Spanish restaurant on the island. The service is top notch, multiple servers are always on hand to assure the best possible experience. The wine selection is extensive and daunting to be honest. Best is to ask for a recommendation, cant go wrong. Food is exquisite, very authentic Spanish taste. The owner is very gracious, listened to our preferences and recommended what fit our personal style. Highly recommend. Yes, it is pricy, but well worth the price of admission.

Google
Has been the best restaurant in Puerto Rico in my experience! The owner "Ray" is gracious, he meets you as you arrive and periodically pass by to make sure everything is satisfactory! I travel frequently and The Compostela is in my top 3 restaurants in the world to me! They have been providing a fantastic culinary experience for more than 30 years always consistently excellent!

Google
Puerto Rico's fine dining at it's best. Hands down this had to be one of Puerto Rico's best restaurants. The manu us small, not too complicated, but yet offers a fantastic selection from red meats, to delicious fish. Great wine menu as well. Service is as expected for a fine dine restaurant, courteous and attentive.

Yelp
Bodegas came highly recommended! The service is that of a 5star restaurant. The food was incredible. I recommend the whole red snapper. It was fried to perfection. It's a casual ambiance with great food, amazing service and a great location. Yelp Elite Approved

Yelp
Incredible food! We tried different wines, smoked octopus and the filet mignon. All wonderful! I hate to see them close.

Yelp
Literally one of my favorite restaurants in the world. The menu is an inspired Spanish / Galician with the freshest ingredients, prepared to perfection. Contemporary decor and modern art give it a cool, elegant vibe. The wine selection is extensive. If you're in San Juan do not miss this delightful experience.

Yelp
Yes - finally made it to this high end world of great wines and great food! This a must if you enjoy good food, good service and good wine. Loved our cocktails and wine selections. Enjoyed variety of Albariños. My scallops were perfectly prepared and presented. The croquetas de bacalao outstanding. Listen to evening specials provided by your server - you can't go wrong. Lovely evening indeed... Gracias.

Yelp
Had the distinct honor and pleasure to dine at this amazing restaurant. We were hosted by the owner and I am sorry I do not remember his name or the delicious dishes we enjoyed.excellent wine (white with appetizers like ceviche) and red wine with my main course, which was an amazing fish.

Yelp
Buen ambiente, mejor servicio, excelente comida. Ideal para celebrar ocasiones especiales. Lo recomiendo.

Yelp
Bodegas Compostela could compete in Washington, Miami, Santiago or anywhere. It was by far the best meal I ate in my short stay in Puerto Rico, and the only restaurant I'd like to go back to for dinner tonight. Right now. I went for lunch with three Puerto Rican friends. The restaurant design is modern, clean, and sophisticated. The cuisine is Spanish, not Puerto Rican. The owner came by the table, shook hands with the four of us, and described the specialties of the day. I had the fish of the day -- a local variety of Red Snapper grilled perfectly and accompanied by vegetables. My friends had cochinillo (suckling pig). The dishes were beautifully presented and the quality compares to the best Spanish restaurants anywhere. The wine was excellent.

Yelp
I you like wine that's the place in Puerto Rico Ambience is very intimate, sophisticated and professional. Ideal for business meetings

Yelp
What can I really say about this place? By far, the best meal I had in Puerto Rico. Be warned, you will pay the price for the ambiance and environment but when the food is so good, it doesn't hurt as much. We had a couple of dishes off of the menu including the kobe burgers, the seared tuna, and I personally ordered the crispy pork (OMG) Do yourself a favor and dine here, just remember it's a bit pricey.

Yelp
We chose this place for the wine list. Priced between $45 and $300. I chose a $100 bottle. It was worthy for my vinegar cabinet. The meat was delicious; however, they are clueless about vegetables and potatoes. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Yelp
I have to start out with saying this was the best place in San Juan that we went to, by far. We walked here from our hotel, and it was so worth it. I am still craving almost everything I had there. When you walk into Bodegas Compostela, it is a really modern and sophisticated place. It looks like they have spared no expense. Also, all of the patrons are ridiculously good looking people, and I swear there were some really important people there. I would venture into saying they were heads of states, but who knows. We started out with a bottle of wine, the Jaros, 2005. Make sure you look on the first page of the menu because there are wine and food specials listed there. We didn't notice until after we ordered, but luckily our wine was on special. This place is a little bit pricier but it is TOTALLY worth it. We actually didn't try any of their primary plates, but here are the different tapas plates we got: Pimiento de Piquillo Relleno -- stuffed red pepper. It was stuffed with chorizo and pure delight. My dinner partner and I brainstormed for a good ten minutes about how they got the red pepper to be so pliable, and yet still so brightly colored. It was seriously amazing. It was perfectly stuffed, and there were onions and green peppers along with the chorizo. The flavor was absolutely amazing. One per person is perfect. Montadito Riojano (Unidad) -- This was pretty delicious but not my favorite. The roasted red pepper was really good, along with the baguette it came on. The quail egg left a little to be desired. It was pretty flavorful overall though. Tortilla Española, Pan Tomate -- This wasn't my favorite because it wasn't too flavorful. It came in four pieces, almost like a pie. The egg and potato weren't as flavored as I would have liked. It came with a baguette with some pan tomato spread on it; that was delicious. Canutillos de Papa con Chistorra -- Chistorra is a type of sausage that is spicier and delicious. These little guys came on toothpicks, and were like pigs in blankets. They were super flavorful and went well with our wine. There was one more tapas plate that we had that had sundried tomato, goat cheese, and proscioutto on them. It was RIDICULOUS. The menu said something about Denver goat cheese. It was the most amazing goat cheese I have ever had, ever. It was also the most amazing sundried tomato I have ever had. We ordered another round of them because of how delish they were. Please make sure you get this!! Chocolate Souffle-- PLEASE ORDER THIS. The server brought it over and cut a circle in the middle, and then poured a delightful liquid into it. Every bite tasted like Ferrer Rocher. It was almost peanut buttery. RIDICULOUS. Please please order this. The service here was impeccable also. I seriously LOVED this place!!

Yelp
Very good place but not quite as good the 2nd time around. Got two meat and two seafood apps that were all well prepared. They did bring out a nice dessert and sang for our anniversary, which was very nice. One thing that always annoyed me, however. They brought out a dessert without us ordering one, however, they charged us for it! Always thought that was odd. One other thing. The place has a bit of a "snobby" quality to it. Definitely with the other diners but even with the staff (although in fairness, I'd say the service was good overall). Met the owner on the way out. Very nice guy.

Yelp
Tapas, it feels like, has become all the rage these days, and I must say i've become a sucker for it just the same. I can't name all the dishes I had, but the pulpo was very tasty, along with their own version of a paella. Also, Creme Brulee... wow. Lets just say, when I got this dish, I ate it so fast, everyone at the table looked at me as if I was possessed. Nuff said. The decor is super sheik, with chairs and tables that seem to have come from the Ikea catalog for extremely rich people. One of the more interesting things about the place is how the owner (who does not dress as trendy as the restaurant looks, but that doesn't matter) is very involved with your meal making sure everything is taken care of. It adds a strong amount of personal touch to the meal, which I found quite pleasing. Great spot worth checking out in the Condado area, if you have the $$$$ to dish out.

Yelp
Elegant and European flair; the service is impeccable. The food is well presented and the formal service is a nice change from sloppy waiters who remove plates while folks are still dining.

Yelp
Best fine dining in Puerto Rico. Octopus carpaccio is a must.
google avatar

Ralph A.

Yelp
I have dined at Bodegas Compostela many time for both lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The wait staff is very experienced and engaging. The appetizers are excellent with Octopus Carpaccio, Prawn Kataifi and Ahi as the best choices. For main courses the crispy suckling pig along with the organic veal chop are among my favorites. The restaurant also has an extensive wine list with very resonable pricing.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to bring your expense account, where it will meet the expense accounts of all of the local bigshots. My local host (law firm partner) says that this is by far his favorite restaurant. Atmosphere is very cordial if you know people, but I guess a tourist might feel like an outsider here because... he would be one. It seems to be sort of a private club for the power brokers of the island. We had some really great food, e.g., the octopus tapas and a rabbit stew. They really could use some more vegetables. Maybe have a plate of steamed asparagus at home before heading over.

Yelp
This is definetly one of the best restaurants in Puerto Rico. I have been dining there for at least the past 25 years. They have recently changed the concept of the restaurant but the food remains 5 star quality. You will be hard to find a better restaurant and more consisten anywhere in the world. The wines are very good and some can be enjoyed by the glass. The cuisine is based on spain but it has a local and international influence. Do not miss it if you are in Puerto Rico. It has been the choice a generation of puertorricans that appreciate good cuisine
google avatar

Yelp
This place is expensive....but the food is amazing. I ordered the grilled scallops on a bed of garbanzo purée...and the grilled octopus. Just amazing. Everyone was nicely dressed but I showed up in my FEMA uniform and they didn't complain at all. Very nice and accommodating. Oh... and then bread was good too.

Yelp
Great food, service is impecable, and the wine list cannot be beat. If you are San Juan and are looking for food that is out of this world, you have to put this restaurant on your list. It is truly fine dining in a casual atmosphere.....

Yelp
Really loved this place on our stay in San Juan. It was pricey but worth it. Great ambiance and decor. You can tell this is where the locals go for a fancy night out. Four tapas plus two desserts and a bottle of wine filled us up, and everything we ate was delicious. A great place for a fancy celebratory dinner.
google avatar

Fahad K.

Yelp
This place was expensive, but had amazing service and everything in the menu is amazing. Suckling pig was to die for and it's what they are known for. It's roasted pig made to perfection.
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
We had dinner here on February 10, 2017, the food and service was excellent. We started with the roasted octopus and squid. The octopus was so tender and tasty as was the squid. I had the suckling pig which was the shoulder very juicy and tender and the skin was so crisp. My wife had the lamb loin and it was amazing, tender and cooked exactly how she requested it. We had a bottle of wine. For dessert we both had cappuccino and I had the trio of sorbet and my wife had cheesecake each were excellent. It is expensive but we felt it was well worth it. The best part about it was it was only an 8 minute taxi ride from our cruise. I highly recommend this restaurant when in San Juan.

Yelp
Authentic Spanish cuisine with some of the best wines in Puerto Rico. The food is elegant. The service is five star. One of the best time dinning experiences in San Juan.
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
I attended two private party dinners here and the food and service were both excellent. I had the halibut both nights and was not disappointed. The tapas were great, we were able to try a little bit of everything - all of it was delish.
google avatar

Rex E.

Yelp
Trusted the other reviews but this turned out to be a mistake. Ordered the tuna and every other bite tasted fishy. Then came the bill....charged me $5.00 for the bottled water they readily kept pouring, but they did not charge any of the others in our party. I had a beer which was like $6.25 while my wife's iced tea garnered a charge of $12.00.....now how does that work I ask you?? Portions were very small so we left still hungry and paid big. I recommend putting this restaurant on 'Drive By' status but, if you do go, check your bill very closely because they will take you when you are not looking.

Steve L.

Yelp
Wonderful experience all around. Lovely ambiance. Great service. Tasty food. Great wine list. We were looking for high-end Puerto Rican dining and certainly found it. We focused on the Tapas, and had some of the best taste treats of any restaurant we have visited. If you are staying along the Condado strip in San Juan, this is an easy walk, although it might look a little scary crossing busy roads under the highway. But it is worth the trouble.
google avatar

Lori G.

Yelp
Amazing customer service! From the time we walked in until the time we left we were treated so well. We asked the server for a wine suggestion and we got the perfect wine. You must get that chocolate soufflé.

Sam S.

Yelp
Amazing food in good atmosphere great food and service chic and elegant good fresh seafood

Yelp
Best restaurant in San Juan! One of the better places we've been to anywhere! Very attentive staff.....dynamite food.....beautiful decor! Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening! Cannot wait till our next visit to PR and Compostellas!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
All I can say is WOW, incredible Spanish dishes with very good service; pricey but worth every penny. Solid wine list, not extensive but what they do have is excellent. The Suckling Pig is delicious and so is the Angel Hair Seafood Paella.
google avatar

Dean S.

Yelp
Amazing meal! The deep sea Snapper, octopus carpaccio and tuna tartare were stand out dishes. The whole meal was simply delicious. The tuna was the best I've ever had, better than Nobu Malibu even. Great meal, can't wait to go back.

Edna R.

Yelp
Where do you take your 78 years old father in law after his doctorate graduation? BC was my first thought. From the friendly welcome, to the expert service, the exquisite plates and awesome deserts... The wine list was spectacular. The seafood was fresh and perfectly seasoned and cooked. Although fries weren't on the menu, our teens were delighted when the servers offered them to accompany their plates of pork chop and filet mignon. We all were very pleased to have received the celebratory experience our family was looking for. We'll be back soon...!

Richard L.

Yelp
On our last evening in Puerto Rico, we did not want to take any chances, so we went to what we knew was an expensive restaurant, expecting good food and outstanding service. And that is exactly what we got at Bodegas Compostelas y Tapas. The waitstaff very kindly guided us through the tapas menu and suggested a couple of dishes to round out a full meal. The Pincho de Solomillo de Angus Beef (basically beef kebab) was especially good, as was the Crepa de Ternera al Graten de Foie Gras (veal crepe). Not cheap, but everything was done perfecly and the service was attentive and helpful. For a guaranteed fine meal, this is an excellent choice.
