Boga Ice Cream and Burgers is Open in St. Paul’s Old Dari-ette Drive-In - Eater Twin Cities

"Boga Ice Cream & Burger has opened at the former Dari-ette Drive-In in East Side St. Paul, swapping the restaurant’s iconic Italian flag trim for a bold red stripe. Instead of meatballs subs and spaghetti, the new restaurant is serving a classic drive-in menu of burgers, fried foods, and ice cream. Father-son duo Loay and Layth Abukhdair run Boga — their family also owns Afandina Cafe, a Columbia Heights favorite for Mediterranean food. The cheeseburgers patties, Layth says, are made from fresh ground beef that’s weighed and shaped in-house. Ever so pink in the middle, they’re layered with the requisite gooey American cheese, lettuce, onion, and tomato. There’s also a specialty gyro burger, made with tender, buttery beef, smeared with cool tzatziki, and finished with the same classic burger toppings. Laythe says they plan to eventually add mushroom swiss burgers and pizza burgers to the menu. As for the ice cream — it’s gelato, technically speaking, more dense and rich thanks to its slow churn and higher milk to cream ratio. Boga serves a few classic Italian flavors like pistachio and hazelnut. “We have the flavor stracciatella, which a lot of people don’t know about,” says Laythe. “Then yesterday someone came in jumping with joy when they saw the flavors. The only time they’d ever seen it before was in Italy.” (Stracciatella has a vanilla base with slivers of chocolate throughout, a bit like a chocolate chunk ice cream.) Burgers aside, there’s a case to be made for pairing a scoop with an order of cheese curds or the seasoned crinkle-cut fries. There are also three tart fruit sorbets on the menu, plus strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla milkshakes, and coffee drinks like lattes and espresso. Laythe says the restaurant will have a grand opening sometime in the coming weeks once the roads open up — Minnehaha Avenue East is currently under construction. But even with car traffic diminished, he says, the response from the community has been tremendous. “Everyone in the community has been extremely nice and extremely patient. I couldn’t have asked for a better kind of neighborhood or community to be placed in,” he says." - Justine Jones

Google
I've reviewed 100s of places and there are few that I would call truly special. This place is one of them. From the warm welcoming I received from the lady at the counter, to the freshness and deliciousness of the food. You can just tell these people care about their customers and their business and it shows. Found my new favorite burger spot in St Paul and I can't wait to come back.

Amazing quick food dine in/take out place. This place is wonderful. We live so close to this place and I'm thinking this might be a family restaurant owned. They are such wonderful and nice people seriously from front staff to the back staff, chef loves to show off some of his food and experiments and loves to treat and talk to the customer at times. The burger is actually super good and their fries as well. Actually impressive place, they've got Mexican coke, which is a plus because my gut can't handle high fructose corn syrup. The place can be enjoyed by both young and old generation. I love that you can have a burger or some gyro which I haven't tried, or you want some cream malts shakes etc, best place to hit this summer. ☀️ 😮‍💨 ⛱️ 🏖 One thing that I would say is if they could make the mango flavor actually taste like actual mango. Mango shake with milk would be a nice addition to this summer

Stopped by tonight for the first time!! Wow!! The burgers were perfect as well as the fries!! Finished off with a sundae and shake. The owners were sitting outside chatting with customers and are just so welcoming! Such a friendly environment! We will totally be back! Plus we need to try the baklava next time!! Awesome place!

Stopped here to celebrate the start of the school year. We sat outside on the nice patio and the staff offered our kids some chalk and bubbles which was a great friendly & personal touch. We had mango, chocolate and salted caramel gelato and a chocolate shake. They were all really good. We also got a basket of fries and cheese curds, both were good. We will be back to try food. It was a great neighborhood spot that we hope to frequent and I would recommend to friends and neighbors to check out.

We've been here a few times and each time we are blown away by the quality and taste. We usually get a either a gyro or mushroom/swiss burger, rice bowl and cheese curds. And a shake at the end to share. Everything tastes fresh and delicious and service is welcoming and attentive. Highly recommend!

Google
The ice cream was spectacular, their toppings were very tasty and generous with portions. They were trying out a batch of homemade Baklava, and it was so good! I really hope they keep it on their menu.

Google
Excellent service and owner, they were nice and very welcoming. The food… EXCELLENT! Burgers are juicy as ever and do not get me started on the bak lava and cheese curds. Everything on the menu is a HIT. Will be coming back again!!

Google
Tried Boga burgers for the first time after seeing the reviews and we understand why! The burgers taste amazing, the cheese curds are the best we’ve ever had in MN and their fries are fried to perfect crispiness! We definitely will be back! Honestly, If you want a burger, skip the fast food chains and do it right with a boga burger. Highly recommended.

Yelp
If you haven't had a burger here yet and you like a good burger, get here now! It's a short menu but the burgers are sooo delish! The shakes are freshly made and mmm hit that ice cream nerve when you need it.

Yelp
Good food for the price. Nice customer service. Clean welcoming atmosphere. I like the rice bowls. Gave 4 stars because I don't like the texture of the ice cream... it's like froyo. Tastes good but I wanted ice cream not like frozen custard. I could be wrong about the ice cream but the texture seemed a bit different. Will buy food from here again.

Yelp
WOW! I ordered two mushroom Swiss burgers, onion rings and milkshakes. They were awesome! The onion rings were nice and crispy with excellent flavor. And the burgers were possibly the best burgers we had had in the metro area and huge. Service was spot on. It's an old drive in but they have a small clean dining area. Make sure you go!

Yelp
So happy and excited to have this walk up cafe in the neighborhood; it just opened up over a week ago! Their menu constitutes of a wide selection of ice cream, burgers, and some different coffee beverages; such as espresso and lattes, with a variety of syrup flavors to choose from - they also had alternative non-dairy milks available! Boga took the place of the historic Dariette Drive-In which closed a few years back. I'm not sure if Boga has plans to continue the drive-in feature; currently it is not in function. There is a parking available, however!

Yelp
Great burger and filling! Best to eat in the car. I didn't try the gelato but saw it looked good and I plan to next time. I would give the burger 5 stars if there was an interesting ambiance to sit and dine.

Yelp
I live down the road and have eaten here a handful of times. The food is great!!! I've tried both burgers, chicken strips, onion rings, gyro combo bowl and a few milkshakes. The gyro combo bowl is my favorite! The staff is friendly and service is quick. I would recommend checking them out!

Yelp
Decided to give Boga Burgers a try. Sent husband up to the ordering window. Ordered the burger basket which comes with fries (I upgraded to onion rings for an extra charge) and a can of soda. Order came up relatively quick considering a steady stream of customers. Burger and fries came in a plastic covered container and we decided to eat in the car since all patio tables were full. Food looked good. Onion rings were crispy and had good taste. The burger was a double stack with cheese, tomato and a thin slice of lettuce. A lot of food. The taste was a little blah, and the texture slightly dryer than I'd like. Would consider them well done. Two pattie's was too much for me but I'd be willing to try this place another day and perhaps a different item. I will also ask for more lettuce! Prices were a bit steep, we can get the same at a sit down restaurant so not somewhere I'd go often. We shared a cup of raspberry gelato which was good. I know this type of business is tough. Long days and hard work!

Yelp
I got delivery. Hamburger and fries. The hamburger had a nice soft bun and fresh toppings. The twin burger patties were nicely grilled. But the burger was WAY too salty!! Couldn't taste the meat. The fries were unique.. small, crinkle cut, crisp... definitely ok. Thanks. Hope Bogo makes it. I will give them one more try in case the salty burger was a one-time mistake.

Yelp
We loved our dinner here tonight! Tried the cheeseburger, gyro burger, and strawberry and chocolate shakes. The burgers were generously sized and came on big bakery buns with fresh toppings. The strawberry shake had real strawberries and chocolate was truly chocolatey, no weak syrup mix-in here. We'll definitely be back to try more!

Yelp
Boga! During my first visit this summer I just had ice cream. I went back for lunch today and am so happy I did! My gyro bowl was terrific, the rice is fragrant and the meat is fork-tender. The burger, onion rings and fries are rock-solid, too. Top it all off with friendly service and we have a winner.

Yelp
Delicious double cheeseburger with fries and coke for $13. Patties are made there from freshly ground beef. If you want a quality burger at a takeout, I recommend this spot. Also, you're supporting a family business.
