Port of Call Food Hall Opens in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"I see Bok Choy Boy as an Asian fusion setup at Port of Call that, like Palmira, has built a following through pop-ups around town." - Erin Perkins

Google
We had such high expectations and we were so excited to try bok choy boy after hearing raving reviews. But whoever was cooking in the back loved salt, and somehow made the fried rice inedible. (Looked like it was cooked in flaming hot Cheeto dust and the rice was red?) disappointed to say the least. My husband is Filipino and this was no where near what we were expecting. I truly don’t think this is a reflection of the owner/creator of bok choy boy, but this needs to be said.

Google
Take it from a local, this restaurant is a true hidden gem! HIGHLY recommend! Arguably one of our top favorites in town! Best bao buns around! The dan dan noodles and tocino bowl are our weekly go-tos! Great service, flavors are on point, and they always have fun / creative / tasty specials (see pictured the carbonara and "croffle")! Couldn't snap all of the pictures before we dug in, but please check this place out!!

Google
We stopped here because we love Asian food and the reviews were stellar - aaaaand the reviews were right.. our food was fantastic..! My tocino bowl with rice - one of the most unique and amazing things I have eaten recently... highly recommended for some GREAT food..!

Google
Best food in town! We've been eating at Bok Choy Boy since they first started doing pop-ups years ago! I like the tocilog bowl, my wife likes the crab fat rice. I especially loved their medovic cake they had awhile back!!! Wish they'd bring that back!

Olivia G.

Google
Sooooooo good. We got the hot buns, dumplings, and tocino bowl and all were incredible. Great food and friendly staff. HIGHLY recommend!

Google
Tocino bowl was covered in some sort of smelly mayonnaise sauce which is gross and wasn't on the menu. Said no cilantro but it was all over the salad. After washing mayonnaise off the food was edible but nothing worth the high price. Dan noodles tasted like Italian noodles with vinegar rather than any sort of Asian dish.

Google
Bok Choy Boy is not a restaurant. It is a kitchen that shares space with Charlestown Fermatory, a top brewery in West Ashley. There is no hostess to greet you. Walk in , snag a table, order your beer at the bar and review the Bok Choy menu on your table. The choices are somewhat limited but the quality and taste are present. You order your food at the food counter. This is not waitress service. They will bring the food to your table nicely prepared and presented. It's not served on paper Plates. The food is Asian as the name Bok Choy Boy suggests. Primarily Filipino, Thai, Japanese. Low key, comfortable and generally inexpensive. Draws a bit of a younger crowd which is fine. My wife and I In our 70's love the atmosphere and vibe. No rowdies, no jerks, just people drinking beer, wine , eating good Asian food while chilling out!

Google
Predominant flavor profile of salt. The lumpia was rolled in salt. The tocino was undercooked with no char and not sweet - just mostly salty. The chicken in the dan dan noodles tasted off (either old or recooked), the chicken wings were very salty with minimal gochujang flavor, the crab fried rice had no flavors besides salty and old crab(I like strong crab/shrimp/fish flavor but this did not taste good). I understand that it's a container kitchen attached to a brewery so maybe the excessive salt is intentional for the beer drinkers but I do not recommend if you don't drink or if you want to bring a family here. I'm mixed Filipino and was excited to try some Filipino fusion flavors but was let down. I would not bring visiting family here to try it. If you do not have asian taste buds or like to drink a lot of alcohol while eating- you might like the food. But I personally didn't and am leaving a review for my fellow Asians/Pacific Islanders that you will be disappointed if you are expecting some awesome Asian fusion flavors - the recipes are not structured for your palate. The ambiance is a laid back brewery vibe and the bar has some of the best root beer I've ever had so that bumped it up a star.

Yelp
Filipino food for the masses! Great bar style food that complements the amazing beer from Charles Towne Fermentory (brewery) in the same building. Try the Jufran fried chicken, way better than Jollibee Lumpia and pancit were good too although it would have been better if they had spicy vinegar and calamansi instead of sweet sauce and lime. Don't expect authentic although the owner/chef is Manila born.

Yelp
The food here is so bomb! My favorite order is the Drunken Noodles, which are savory and the ultimate comfort food. I also recommend the dumplings, and Dan Dan noodles (if you can do spice). The bartenders and staff are very nice, and there are games in the fermantort as well. Great vibes and food!

Yelp
Long time watcher, first time eater. Where to begin, where to begin... The cider was quite nice. A little light for my taste but very good. The Tocino Bowl on the other hand was legen [wait for it] dary! The sweet cured pork was full of flavor and so tender chewing was optional. The tomato cucumber salad was topped with a cream dressing that I didn't even get to analyze--I just scarfed it down. The crispy rice was delish and the bowl--overall--well-envisioned and excellently crafted. If I had to offer a recommendation, the crispy rice could have been a bit crispier but honestly, I can't say as I missed the extra crunch much. The service--at the bar and at the food counter was top notch. I asked for a recommendation and boyo! NO complaints. In short, come to this place. Eat the food. Talk to the bartender. Have a drink. Leave an excellent tip. Tell others.

Yelp
The atmosphere was nice and it's located inside a good bar. It's definitely casual. We really liked the beer, but the food was underwhelming. We ordered the Drunk noodles and Curry with pork katsu. The noodles were cooked well and had a nice texture, the sauce was just alright and there was very little chicken. Noddles would've been better with a touch of acidity or spice. The pork katsu was nice and crispy but the curry sauce was one dimensional. It lacked some substance and really only had some green beans and green onion in it. Overall, we were left still a bit hungry

Yelp
I was only able to get the dumplings, but they made my day! This cute little Asian spot is inside of the Charlestown brewery so you can grab a beer and some delicious Asian food. Everything came out so quickly and fresh to order.

Yelp
Run...don't walk!!! I have been meaning to go here for the longest time but finally made it happen today. I tried their special the "Katsu Sando" and was so impressed!! The miso bacon jam was absolutely insane. Tons of seating, but I took mine to go. Amazing customer service!

Yelp
Hip chill vibe with great beer and food. Small but delicious menu:) I had the lumpia which I highly recommend as well as the udon pork belly noodles chef can accommodate vegan and they have vegetarian options.

Yelp
On the way home, I had a craving to try more food from Bok Choy Boy since I really liked what I had last time. This time, I ordered the drunken noodles and the jufran banana ketchup fried chicken. Now.... If you didn't grow up on banana ketchup, you should try it! Don't knock it until you try it! Alone, it seriously tastes just like tomato ketchup! In this fried chicken dish, combined with the other spices they put into it, reminds me of Sriracha and the whole dish was addictingly yummy! I think the next time I get it, I'll have to order 2 servings because it's so easy to devour. Fun fact: Banana ketchup was invented by a Philippine scientist named Maria Rosa. Tomato imports into the Philippines had ceased during WWII and so she developed this as a solution to the shortage. Back to the Bok Choy Boy food..... the drunken noodles.... Omg! So good! I brought it home so my kids can try it too and they seriously argued about who was going to get the last bit of it. Lol. While I waited for the food, I sipped on Gwapo since I got hooked when I had it last time. Just as I finished the last sip, the buzzer buzzed and my food was ready to go! Another great experience and cravings satisfied!

Yelp
A takeout window embedded in a brewery, this place offers a small but interesting menu. I sampled some drunken noodles, a common term in Southeast Asian cuisine but here rendered with what they call a "fermentory beer sauce". They were interesting noodles, with a complex flavor, springy texture, and crisp vegetables. The people here do seem to do some significant menu rotation, so while I didn't find much else of interest to me, if they make anything else vegetarian I'd be happy to try it.

Julia B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. The food was fresh, spicy and absolutely perfection. I didn't get a picture of the lumpia because we ate them too fast. The service was great and they are tucked in the back of Charles towne fermentory so you have tons of great beer options besides.
google avatar

Danace Y.

Yelp
The best hole in the wall inside the brewery. I have been secretly stalking Setrini for years and following his pop everywhere and he never and would never disappoint. So when decent to this humble joint, I knew I had to come. What a ride. Once again, I was satisfied. It's not just because I knew I would love his dishes from the get go but because I knew his crew would also deliver his dishes with or without him because they never lag. The pictures don't do justice. There's drinks, there's food. What are you waiting for?

Zachary M.

Yelp
Had the tocino bowl and it was amazing. Everything tasted super fresh... if i was capable of eating 1 of everything on the menu i would have done just that. 10/10.

Yelp
Not much to review in terms of ambience as it's just a kitchen tucked away within the Charleston Fermentary. (A good vibe in its own right) Despite the lack of size, the food definitely packs a punch. I've had a taste of nearly everything on the menu and each dish wows in its own way. Crab fat fried rice was addictive. I got a second batch just to have for lunch the next day. The spicy chicken sandwich also brought a heat that tends to be missing from other restaurants. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
love the brewery ambiance. fun games and merch. food and service was phenomenal and I can't wait to come back

Yelp
I stopped into Port of Call this past weekend to pick up some sweet treats, but also timed it so that I could get lunch there too. BCB was calling to me, and so after browsing the menu, I went with the lumpia and the udon noodle bowl. Plenty of seating upstairs, so I went to relax while my food was prepared. It's all made fresh, so don't expect it to be quick like in a food court at the mall. Quality takes time, and this was worth it. The lumpia and the dip sauce was excellent. Amazingly done. Possibly the best lumpia I've had all year. The udon noodles were thick, tender, flavorful, and every bite was just as good as the last. The bowl also had pickled shallots and pork belly chunks. So good. I ate everything and wanted to go back for more. I will, just not the same day.

Yelp
Got a chance to catch Bok Choy Boy when they were popping up at Stems and Skins in Park Circle. I wanted to try a bit of everything so for two people we order a handful of dishes. -Fried Chicken and Ube Waffles -Dan Daniel Noodles -Lumpia -Cake Balls I placed my order and it was ready in fifteen. You could have eaten there but I had plans to eat at home. Everything was packaged up nicely and I was on my way. To be honest, everything was great. My favorite was the fried chicken on the waffles. I would say top 5 fried chicken ever. The mix of the ube waffle and shishitto peppers definitly made it my favorite dish. The noodles were spicier than I thought. I'm fine with it but my friend couldn't handle so I ate most of that dish. I would get it again for sure. The lumpia, while great, was what I expected and the sauce was jammed with flavor. Can't wait to try more of the menu!

Yelp
I ate here twice in one weekend to try the Filipino food and the debut of their Izakaya menu! For the Filipino food, we got lumpia, dumplings, Mochiko fried chicken, and ube bread pudding. The lumpia was about what I expected, the dumplings were very tasty and had a nice amount of chili oil on them, and the bread pudding had a lot of good ube flavor. I would definitely be prepared to split the bread pudding since it is rich and a large portion. The mochiko fried chicken itself was crispy, moist, and flavorful. My only complaint is that there was too much of the sauce in the rice itself so it became a little too sweet for me, but when it was with the chicken it balanced nicely. For the Izakaya (Japanese) menu, we got the gyoza, the Katsu curry, and the tonkotsu ramen. The goyza were super crispy, I like that they are crepe-based. I felt the filling was not as flavorful as the dumplings the day before, but I really liked the crispness. The tonkotsu ramen was nothing special, especially compared to the better ramen in my home base of DC, but it would get the job done on a chilly day. THE KATSU CURRY was excellent! The fried pork was perfectly crispy on the outside but moist inside. The curry part itself could be spicier, but it still was flavorful. I would go back frequently for that dish. Overall, I am very glad to see Bok Choy Boy bringing in some different Asian food to the scene downtown. I look forward to seeing where they go from here. Try the Filipino food when it is around, and get the Katsu curry!

Yelp
Food was really good and authentic. Very flavorful and fresh. Today was a warm day outside but the food along with the atmosphere made it great. Service was quick and they were super polite. They even checked to see if I was enjoying the meal. I will definitely be returning and highly recommend. I've been trying to find a place that serves great Filipino food, and I've finally found it. Thank you!!!

Yelp
Bok Choy Boy is the real deal! As a Filipino-American who grew up in Los Angeles and lived in both DC and NYC, it has always been a challenge finding quality Asian food in Charleston (especially downtown!). Bok Choy Boy in the Port of Call Food Hall is undoubtedly the tastiest Asian fusion food that I have eaten since moving here and does a great job in maintaining all of the authentic Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Filipino flavors that I always enjoyed throughout my life. My wife and I ordered lumpia (Filipino egg rolls), dumplings, a fried mochiko chicken rice bowl, a katsu sandwich, and ube bread pudding. My father-in-law also ordered the Korean fried chicken (not pictured). Needless to say, everything was delicious and just brought back all of familiar flavors that I grew up with in LA and enjoyed in DC and NYC. If you only had to pick a few items, the fried mochiko chicken rice bowl and Katie sandwich are definitely our top two. All in all, I highly recommend anyone in the Charleston area to try Bok Choy Boy and get a taste of the best Asian fusion in the area

Yelp
I've walked around downtown Charleston and the market so many times, and somehow I missed this entire food hall every time. Got invited here for lunch today and I sure won't miss it again! Bok Choy Boy is one of the options in the food hall and wow this food is incredible. Some of the best Thai type food I've had. I got the Dan Daniel San and it was so delicious, the perfect amount of spicy and so many awesome flavors in one bowl with great portion size. The venue is really neat too as 4 different food truck style places all share the same building with an outside bar and courtyard that had some live music and everything, even on a Thursday lunch. Will 100% be back!

Yelp
Yummy food here and it came out pretty quickly! The Bok choy bowl is a MUST for you veggie lovers. It's full of flavor and veggies and yummy sauce over rice. The dan daniel noodles were tasty but left something to be desired. I wish the flavor was a little stronger and the type of noodle was a different- maybe like a curly ramen noodle. The service was very good and the cashier was very friendly. Overall, very positive experience.

Tia C.

Yelp
Food is so good!! It has just the right amount of heat and flavor. This is the place I bring all of my friends to as well as out of town visitors. The chef remembered us after the second visit and the vibe is cool. We played pinball while we waited for our food.

Yelp
Stopped in to Port of Call Food & Brew Hall for something lunch and grabbed a couple of Katsu Sandos. They were outstanding! The pork cutlets were generous and so juicy and the breading had a terrific crunch. Comes topped with red cabbage, tonkatsu sauce, dashi vinaigrette, Mayo and Seoul sauce (whatever that is...it's yum). Service was quick and friendly! We are coming back 4 sure!! https://www.instagram.com/p/CWECcXZL3sj/?utm_medium=copy_link The one star review from a year ago should be erased!

Susan D.

Yelp
Had the Tocilog Rice Bowl w/pork belly. Honestly, one of the best things I have ever eaten! So good, I nearly chocked eating it so fast. Yum, yum, yum!!!

Yelp
Walk past the food stand when hubby was picking up craft beer at the Two Blokes brewery and I couldn't resist when I saw they had Korean wings on the menu. The wings were large and very tasty, seasoned perfectly and I asked them to make it spicy so that can be adjusted. Seth and his wife were so personable and I look forward to them opening up a place or going the food truck route.

Yelp
Finally a good silog in Charleston. I am Asian (Filipino) but grew up in a place where there is always good Asian food--rare for Charleston. - Dan Dan Noodles (Fucking excellent) - Dumplings (just try them) - Tocilog (Filipino breakfast) made me feel like I was back home in San Francisco--where you can get Filipino food anywhere.
google avatar

Yelp
Bok Choy Boy in Charleston is a great place to go for delicious and flavorful Asian food. I really like how well everything is prepared and presented. I like their bowls the best. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have everything that you need.
google avatar

Billy T.

Yelp
Some of the best food around. Especially the Fried Chicken rice bowl and Pimento Cheese Rangoons. Excellent pricing and great music/vibes.

Pam B.

Yelp
My husband and I were tired of trying to get into any restaurants in Charleston without reservations the week of New Years. We saw the food court near our hotel and decided to try this place. I had the Dan Dan noodles with other ingredients I had never even heard of. So glad I did. It was fabulous flavor and plentiful. I vowed to try to experiment and make something similar at home! Reasonable prices for the quality of taste. So happy we stopped there.

Douglas S.

Yelp
Sorry no pic! Food looked so great! Tasted great. I had the Mochiko chicken. Had the sweetness with some acidity and the crunch from the chicken. The sauce was excellent and not to much. And the lumpia is great!!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
Their hours stated they were open until 9:00pm. Pulled in at 7:35, Bok Choy boys were picking up, and told me they had some noodles. Too bad, BcB

Halle B.

Yelp
The dumplings are to die for. Start with the dumpling and finish with something rice based so you can dip the rice in the leftover sauce from the dumplings. I would send a picture but my plate has been licked clean.
