Burned in the Riots, One St. Paul Restaurant Seeks to Rebuild | Eater Twin Cities

"Converted from a former Subway into a fast‑casual outpost next door to the original restaurant, Bolé Express was launched to capitalize on strong COVID-era to‑go demand; to market the new outpost the owners asked the community to nominate frontline medical professionals to receive free meals, and its early success has led them to prioritize the fast‑casual model while scouting new Midway properties." - Cinnamon Janzer

Food was wonderful served hot. William at the front counter was so helpful. The flavors and spices were perfect. The engera was just as it should be. They did not disappoint. Please try.

Came here almost a year ago. It was my first time at an Ethiopian restaurant, and I was impressed with the flavors of everything. I ordered the three meat dish to share with a friend. There was enough to bring some home. I will have to visit again soon.

Google
First timer with Ethiopian cuisine, I thought the food was awesome. Great flavors and colors, the plate itself was beautiful. I couldn’t tell you the name of anything we ate but the gentleman at the counter was extremely helpful with recommendations, proper technique when eating, and checked in on us several times. Food was cheap, $21 for 2 and brought home leftovers. Really nice experience overall and will go back!

I had a great experience here! I like how you can order a variety of portion sizes. There is a good variety of meet and vegetable options. The menu was very well organized and easy to understand. I decided to order a “light size” of the lamb stew, which comes with 3 rolls of injera and salad. I also ordered beef sambusas. The light order of lamb stew was a great deal for $9! Not only did it fill me up, it was so tender! I have never had lamb so tender. The sambusas were crispy and fresh tasting. The dipping sauce tasted homemade too. Looking forward to trying more on the menu. Also, the owners and staff were very friendly. They made sure we were comfortable and knew how to eat the food. 10/10✨✨✨

Google
What a great find! Everything was delicious and the ambiance and server were really nice. We shared the vegetarian sampler, veggie samosas and mitmita fries and had leftovers. We'll definitely be back!

Google
I absolutely love the Midwest tips dish from this place. It's convenient for me, being not too far from my job. Now, they're serving in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Note that Minneapolis opens on Monday, while Saint Paul is closed on Mondays

Excellent service! The man at the counter was genuinely welcoming. He was quick to educate us on his menu. The vegan miser and shiro were savory, and after two bites, I felt warm and the endorphins in my body healed me from the long and cold Minneapolis winter days and nights. We devoured the fasolia and feasted on the sambusas. I loved the lounge music and by the end of our experience, I felt romantic, giddy, and relaxed. My only suggestion to Bole: please devise a loyalty program and invite us to be weekly, regular diners.

Yelp
Usually a good sign when a placed is packed on a Saturday night, and I was right. My husband and I went on a double date here and while it may have been hard to hear each other talk, the food was amazing. We ordered the big tour of Ethiopia or something like that and we were impressed by every bite.

Yelp
This is based on the express location. The menu here is limited due to it being a quick service location. Service was fine. I had the chicken tibs with tiqel gomen and veggie sambusas to start. The food came out pretty quickly and everything was hot. The sambusas were wonderful! The chicken tibs were lacking flavor and spice. The chicken to pepper/onion ratio was uneven. There was very little chicken. It was served with 3 half pieces of injera. All in all it was okay, not sure I'd come back to this location.

Yelp
So good! I've had Ethiopian in a few cities, Bole was delicious. Great service. Personally greeted by the owner too.

Yelp
I came at a reasonable time (like not right before they closed or anything), yet they were still out of half of the things on the menu. Very disappointing, and the front desk worker seemed not to give two flying freaks about anything other than his phone. May try another location but won't be back here

Yelp
We absolutely love this place. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is very inviting. If you like Ethiopian food, you will love this place.

Yelp
Nice, friendly atmosphere with a decent amount of seating inside and a huge patio. Street parking only so I imagine it gets hard to come by on busier days. Speaking of, you should probably make reservations for popular times since they've gotten a lot of attention being on the MSP Mag "50 best" list. I got the small veggie sampler with: - miser: red lentils and berbère - fasolia: green beans, tomatoes, and spices - tiqel gomen: cabbage, potatoes, carrots in a light curry Everything was excellent with lots of flavor. At 4oz of each the small sampler is definitely enough food for one person. The miser has a very small hit of spice from the berbère but not spicy at all. The gomen is very mild and is almost a palette cleanser. The injera is also fantastic. Very soft and just tangy enough without being overwhelming. The salad it comes with is very good as well. Nice from shallots balanced by an herbed vinaigrette. I'll definitely be back to try the other veggie dishes and desserts.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food and experience. The owner gave our family the greatest hospitality during our visit from California. This was our first time experiencing Ethiopian cuisine and it brought our family closer. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Best flavors we have had since moving to Minneapolis in 2021. Service was warm and given with care to my gluten allergy. I felt confident and enjoyed eating everything!

Yelp
Pretty delicious Ethiopian food. The restaurant is designed where you order at the counter can choose to eat there or to go. They have a variety of different classic Ethiopian dishes from Tibs, Doro Wat, and several different Vegetarian. I went with the Doro Wat (an Ethiopian Chicken spiced curry) that came with a Salad and Injera bread and it was delicious. There's also an Ethiopian grocery store right next door as well.

Yelp
Perfectly seasoned food, great value, quick service! I'm currently eating my fourth sitting of my one meat one veggie stew combo, this stuff is so filling and hearty! It's good hot, it's good cold, if you like sourdough and eating with your hands you'll probably love the injera as I did, if that's not your deal it seemed like you could choose to swap it for rice. Either way you have got to try the beef stew, it was probably the best beef stew I've ever eaten, it was seasoned to perfection and so tender I could easily shred it with my spoon. Side salad was great I only wish there was more of it! Great portions of everything else though. Highly recommend this place I look forward to trying more dishes from here

Yelp
Omg their food is so good. The meat is so tender and I love the scent of the incense they use from time to time. I also appreciate the traditional coffee they serve.

Yelp
First time at this location, we normally go to the St. Paul location but, due to the State Fair, they are closed.

Yelp
Hands down the best food I have had in the Twin Cities! Everything was delicious and amazing!

Yelp
Came in town for a few days. Best meal I had here by far. Didn't know a thing about Ethiopian food, but left with a full belly and newfound appreciation. Portions are great. My wife and I split a three meat plate and had plenty to spare. So sad I couldn't take home leftovers. Great pricing too!

Yelp
Delicious! And thank goodness, because Seward is becoming a bit of a food desert. But this is a seriously great addition to the neighborhood. I came here tonight with friends and we ordered a lot: a beef, a chicken, and a lamb dish; a lentil, a split pea, a beet, a cabbage, and a mustard greens dish. We loved all of them. Flavorful and fresh, and not oily. The non-meat options are all vegan. We had two babies in our party, and it was a nice, chill environment for them. (They mostly loved the food like the adults did, although one found the red lentils too spicy.) We will definitely be back!

Yelp
We've been to the St.Paul location but had a craving for Ethiopian on a Monday night and they're closed. Bole Express IS open Monday (yelp shows it as closed). Had the crispy kitfo roll lightly cooked for an appetizer, amazing. Had awaze tibs, atil kik, and misser combo for main course. Perfectly seasoned and spiced. Prompt service, perfect portions, reasonably priced.
