FINALLY got to try poke for the first time! As someone who loves sushi, since hearing about poke a handful of years back, I knew it was something I wanted to try because I already knew I'd love it -- thanks to Bolicious for being the ones to prove me right!
Workers were masked and the one who took my order was sweet, but she was soft-spoken. Not normally a big deal but combined with the mask plus the shield between me and the register, it made me have to ask her to repeat herself multiple times. I'd certainly take that over the alternative of no precautions though, so I guess it's ok :)
Like I said, it wasn't a surprise to me that I liked the poke bowl, but I honestly think it was even better than I expected. For one, every single thing was SO fresh tasting. And it was also more filling than I think I was prepared for, which I always see as a plus.
I did a "build your own bowl" and I absolutely love that you can really load it up with toppings. It doesn't feel like you're paying more and more for every little thing you add. You get two protein choices, a base choice, two sauces, and all the toppings you want. I just love that.
So I went with sushi rice as my base, which was yummy and had that nice semi sticky consistency that we know and love from sushi rolls. My proteins were salmon and tofu. Both were seriously amazing, especially the salmon. The salmon was raw and I got the tofu fresh (there's the option to do fried tofu), and I thought both had a great soft/ squishy texture, flavor, and the size of each chunk was perfect. Pretty good portion of each overall too.
For sauces I had their classic sauce and the sriacha aioli. The sauces were the only things I really wish there was more of, though I did get soy sauce packets on the side, which helped. I'm just the kind of person who uses a lot of sauce... like, A LOT lol.... so it really just wasn't enough for me. Next time I'll probably get something other than the classic sauce. It was fine, but I think being the sauce fanatic that I am I can't afford to waste one of my options on something that simple.
My toppings were avocado, cucumber, edamame, roasted seaweed, fried onion, masago, and sesame seeds. Everything was good, though I'm not sure I'd include edamame next time. Nothing bad about them (especially if you're someone who really enjoys it in the first place), just didn't really seem to add much for me to the overall bowl, and they were hard to eat with my chopsticks anyway! For some reason I didn't expect them to be out of their shell/ pod already. Other than that I think I made an awesome bowl and everything worked so well together with the flavors!! The sesame seeds were actually a standout for me because they just worked so well and really seems to contribute to that overall flavor. The roasted seaweed was also one of my favorites, but it was the only other thing I wish they gave more of. It gave that slight bit of extra saltiness and was super finely shredded, but there was just such a small amount of it. The fried onion was also a good choice that seemed kind of fun to just add, and glad I did.
I just can't get over how fresh, flavorful, and filling everything was!! Obviously I'll be back... and I can't wait!
