The Best Restaurants in Montreal’s West Island | Eater Montreal

"This unassuming strip mall spot is the preferred place to grab an Indian curry for many West Islanders. Bombay Choupati’s hearty portion sizes (the dosas are especially hefty) and spot-on flavours complement its homey, local feel." - Erinn Blicher

Montreal’s Best Indian Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Montreal’s West Island is home to several worthwhile Indian restaurants, with Bombay Choupati, serving the Pierrefonds community, topping the list. Here, thali options go beyond vegetarian and non-vegetarian, with diners free to take their pick from butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, mixed veggies, chicken tikka, and more. The menu also features South Indian options — try the “fire masala dosa” if you can take the heat." - JP Karwacki

If you are looking for authentic Indian food, this is the place to go. I've been gong there for over 10 years now and never did they disappoint. I used to dine in before having a kid and service was impeccable. Now it's easier for the family to take out but still get great service and succulent delicious food every single time. Thank you Jay and kitchen staff!!!!

Google
The best Indian restaurant in the West Island ! The host and the staff are super nice and hospitable and want to ensure you have the best time. Their Madrasi dishes are amazing and our favorite are the incredible crispy doses! I love the coconut chutney :) We've come here many times and look forward to trying everything on the menu. A perfect venue to come with family and enjoy authentic Indian food.

We were the last one there may be that’s why, everything felt like sugar was added, even coconut chutney. I wish it were better. May be it’s the best in the locality, but very sub par when we had it.

Our first visit and will definitely not be our last! This 28 year old family business makes phenomenal tasting food!! We ordered Tandoori Naan, Baraka Vada, Basmati Rice, Aloo Gobi and Aloo Baigan. The gentleman said it would only take 10 minutes and he was right; on a Saturday night 5:30pm. Due to Covid-19 restaurant is take out only. We were happy to see that the small takeout containers were recyclable and none were styrofoam. Do not be deceived by the somewhat small appearing plastic containers; each plastic container measures 1.5 cups, which is an ample amount of food! The inside washroom was extremely clean. Parking is very plentiful in the plaza parking lot. They do not offer any delivery but Uber Eats and Skip the Dishes is available. All the food was absolutely fantastic!! The flavours kept us wanting more and more!! The eggplant in the Aloo Baigan was very very tasty. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly and are willing to modify any dish to suit your needs. We will definitely be returning and recommend this Eatery!

Google
Great place for amazing Indian food. We did a takeaway of their Thali the first time and had a dine-in. Very good experience. We went for Sev Bataka Puri, Plain Dosa, Masala Dosa and Bombay Thali. Everything great!! Just one thing they need to figure out to include - given the name of the restaurant has Bombay in it - is to have Pav Bhaji, Vada Pav, Misal Pav etc. The service was very good as well. The food came in reasonable time. No issues there. Plenty of parking outside since it's a shared parking lot with the plaza. Good seating space inside the restaurant. Definitely recommended!!

We have been customers for many years and take out meals have generally been very good. Tonight, (week night ) we ordered for 6-7 people. It was for a family celebration. Butter chicken, rice and sides were all good but the chicken tikka was not edible. The pieces were not fresh, extremely dry, rubbery, and appeared to have been reheated. All 3 containers of chicken went into the garbage. It was a big part of the dinner. We were very disappointed tonight.

Google
Bombay chapati is a hidden Jewel on the west island. If you're looking for good authentic Indian food it's worth the drive all the way to the top of sources Boulevard you might want to make a reservation first though, sometimes it's got lots of space but other times not so much. They also do take out

Maitrayiee

Google
Service is really really good! That definitely amplifies the dining experience! The bataka wada and chaat was delicious! Dosa was a bit greasy. Will be back to try other dishes.

Yelp
This one came as a recommendation to my partner years ago, and he had since tried it, but it was my first time. We had the Bombay dhel and Bombay chole chat as starters, as well as papadams and raita. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavourful. We then had a butter chicken thali and a chicken tikka thali, and both were so delicious. Service was great, Jay is a delight and takes great pride in the food. Everything came out a good pace.

Yelp
Small family run place . The two servers run their asses off with professionalism and warmth. Prices have increased but you won't find any place cheaper. We had goat curry and chicken Tikka thalis. Everything is extra here including chutney, yogurt and papadams.

Yelp
It's Ok nothing special really.. Bombay Choupati is located on Sources near Pierrefonds.. Small little restaurant with not many tables about 8-10 tables .. didn't feel the authentic vibe in the resto .. it was plain and not very impressed so decided to pick up the food to take home. Service: was great and friendly .. super attentive staff and liked their helpfulness while ordering the dishes Food: quite disappointed.. after all the positive reviews this place had I was expecting way more than i got.. quality was subpar... bummer as I was really excited! The Tandoori Chicken 3/5 lacked spices.. it was coated with some pink rub that had absolutely no flavour.. it looked like pink colouring to me.. I tasted the grill itself was cooked great but there was no spiciness and I like my tandoori chicken spiced up as it should be .. the portions was scarce .. really not much we only got maybe 4 tiny tiny pieces for 11$ :/. Eeek that's kindove sad! The Mattar Paneer : 1/5 super gross.. the sauce was not good at all tasted likee half melted butter super fatty and bland and lacked flavours .. the green peas was just gross and tasted frozen not fresh at all .. can't believe that was 11.95$ for barely anything a tiny cup portion Whattt where's the Paneer !!!? Maybe only 2 -3 paneer cheese extremely overcooked and overpriced .. we initially wanted Shahi paneer but learned that they don't have that .. how does a well reviewed Indian restaurant not have Shahi Paneer aahhhhh so disappointed! The rice: was ok 3/5... it's basmati rice lacked salt but fresh unfortunately it was way overpriced for what you get. Overall, quality vs price is not worth it and don't think I'll be back .. it's too expensive and lacks flavour and freshness for me .. I felt like I wasted 60$ in the garbage and was still hungry:(

Yelp
Was in the mood for some Indian food. I heard about this place and was in the area. LocAted on sources and south of pierrefond blvd Lots of free parking and easy to spot them in the strip mall. I did take out but notice the restaurant was super clean and was simply decorAted. Was greated by the staff who werre super friendly and my order was ready when I got there. I order tandori chicken You get 4 pieces for 11 dollars . 2 drum sticks and two thighs. The chicken was moist but lacking flavour and spices. I had better at the place down the street Mattar pAnner 10 dollars Is Indian cheese witH green peas in a creamy sauCe. The portion was very small for the price Sauce was very liquid and lack all the flavour. Cheese was way overcooked to the point it turned to a rubBer feel and sour taste. The green pees you could teLl were fROzen and could taste the freezer burn. They were hard like a rock. I had to order rice and naan Ass most dishes come a la carte Rice was ok and the naan was basic and very bland and under cooked. Wass very disappointed as this place was very well reviewed Will not go baCk as theRe is better down the street that have better portion sizes and food of higher quality

Margaret L.

Yelp
Consistently awesome! Family-owned for over 20 years. Favourites are the combo vegetarian plate, masala dosa and butter chicken.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious. Goat madras. Aloo baigan. Rice naan kingfisher and a full belly!!! Will definitely be back. I'm trying to make room for dessert.

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for years and I'm glad I finally made my way here. I won't lie, I'm not the biggest Indian food guy and most of my experience with the cuisine led to a combination of mediocre food (from bad restos) and spicy food that exceeded my comfort level. I wanted to give Indian food a proper go and wanted to go for an authentic food experience. Going in I knew I was in for a treat with a mix of people that span the difference races we find in our cultural rage of what is Montreal. The place was fully seated but we had a table within 10 minutes on a Friday night. The staff was friendly, helpful and attentive. For starters wee ordered a Masala Dosa, Papadams and a couple rounds of Mango Lassi. The Dosa was DELICIOUS. I was addicted to the Papadams and the Mango Lassi makes my mouth water when I'm thinking about it. For the main plates I went with the safe butter chicken plate and my cuz went with the goat vindaloo. Each plate comes with Naan bread, potatoes and rice. I came to the realization I'm not fond of butter chicken but the sauce was perfectly fine. The naan bread was amazing. I also had a few bites of the goat vindaloo and it was a delight (minus the spicy!). Overall, I enjoyed my plate. For dessert I ordered some gulab jamun and my mind was blown how good it was. I just wished the serving was doubled (only 2). Price tag is very reasonable. Will be back for sure.

Yelp
Always order from there. Food is top notch! Unfortunately it is closed since Dec 24 as per their recording.

Yelp
Bets Indian restaurant with amazing prices for vegetarians. I love their serving platters and you really get a variety of curries to try. I used to come here with my friends for dine in and wish to do so in the future. I highly recommend. Amazing prices and great portions.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I can't truly say food is 5-star bc I am not an expert in Indian food, but the vibe and friendliness paired with the delicious food experience definitely makes it a 5! It's the kind of restaurant that makes we wish I lived in Montreal because the staff remembers people and has tons of locals coming in and keeping it busy. The size of the restaurant seems just perfect enough for this organic process. And I just discovered that the owner is eating here tonight to celebrate his birthday... not much better support for a restaurant than that! **Of note, make sure you don't go higher than medium spicy unless you're a pro. I would say that it is equivalent to an American Thai level 5 spice, if that makes sense to you **Shoutout to Jay. You da man!

Yelp
If you are hesitating about going to an Indian restaurant, you are not sure where to go and where you should go, search no more. This is where you should and will always want to go. The place is simple, nothing wild. Burgundy walls and black tile ceiling. It's small and cozy and can still accommodate crowds. The staff greeted us with smiles on their faces. Offered us to choose our table, even if we were two, they did not oppose to us grabbing the 4 seat banquet. Our waiter listened to us when we didn't find an item we were looking for on the menu and asked if we wanted to try something he recommended instead, we accepted. It was really good and i forgot what it was called. Our butter chicken and tandoori chicken combos were seriously delicious. I could not make this at home and trust me I tried. The naan.. omg the naan bread there is my new BFF, it is perfection. We live in Fabreville and we will definitely be making this place a regular. We are really happy we let our Yelp friend's reviews influence us into giving this place a shot!

Yelp
Came here for a coworker birthday lunch. I had previously been told it was delicious by a close friend so it was already on my radar to try it out. No joke, it was the BEST butter chicken I've ever had. Spicy, flavourful, rich and creamy, I will be going back for it!! The naan bread was ok and the rice was decent but I found the vegetarian curry blah in comparison. The waiter was making some jokes which could be taken as offensive but I didn't really mind it. Delicious, quick, cheap - will be going back for that butter chicken!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Consistently delicious. Lovely, family-run place with very tasty food. Staff are pleasant, accommodating, have great suggestions and always deliver excellent service. The dosas are sublime, and the curries are rich in flavor. Butter chicken here is a star, especially when you order it spicy with lots of naan to lap up the sauce. Be prepared to wait on a weekend evening as the line can be out the door. It's worth it to wait for a table though....
google avatar

Elisa Y.

Yelp
Ordered a la carte off menu and they sent us a combo meal in a small container with 3 compartments. Charged us the same price for less than half the food. Not honest st all!

Yelp
As New Yorkers visiting Quebec, we searched Yelp for an Indian restaurant with good reviews to have dinner... after a few with not so great reviews we came across Bombay Choupati and decided we will try it. Got there and there was a wait (it was a Saturday night) we waited and boy was it worth it. The service was amazing! The food was delicious. One of us who doesn't eat much had seconds! Pragna, her fiancé and uncle provided amazing hospitality! We ended up going back on Sunday night for dinner and we can't wait to visit Quebec again to dine at the great establishment! Bombay Choupati, keep up the great work! Oh Pragna, our dad will wait for his invitation to your wedding! And enjoy your upcoming trup

Yelp
One of my Pakistani friends had been raving about this place for a while, so we made it into a girls night. Having looked at the menu beforehand I was looking forward to trying this place. They have a variety of Indian dishes- South Indian Dosas to North Indian butter chicken and pani puri... we started off with appetizers- masala dosa, fruit chaat and pani puri, which were fine. We then ordered mains for the table - shrimp curry, goat curry, butter chicken, baingan bharta and palak paneer. Super disappointed with the veggie dishes, they were undercooked and watery consistency, running all over my plate. Palak paneer is not supposed to be watery whatsoever, neither is the eggplant dish. The butter chicken, which they are apparently known for... isn't even the right colour! And their naan is so thin. I brought some home and it dried out by the next day. For someone who knows Indian food really well, I must say this was a disappointment.
google avatar

Joe J.

Yelp
A different kind of experience with this restaurant as the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming but the food varieties and taste it's not what I'm used to. The butter chicken needed more better and texture and the tandury chicken was a bit red to my taste but the nan bread it's fresh and yummy. It's an experience that you want to do for a change. And yes perfect place for vegans.
google avatar

Jamie M.

Yelp
Great local spot for Indian food! I only recently discovered this place and it's been around for 20+ years. Been coming every other week for a little curry fix. Jay and his family and staff are super friendly and welcoming. We have enjoyed every dish we have tried.. great Gluten Free options as well.

Yelp
Before I start my review, please be warned, the restaurant gets full at 5:15pm on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). You must come here before 5:30pm or you will have to wait. I have been here numerous times and I do wait occasionally, but it is never long. I have went many times to Scarborough and Brampton in Ontario, and they probably have the best south Asian cuisine in Canada (sorry Surrey, BC), but when I am in my hometown, I have to go come here. We love everything ranging from the vegetarian menu to the chicken dishes. We absolutely love the Masala Dosa (spicy) and the Aloo Gobi. Whenever I come here, I normally eat those two dishes and I am totally full. Although, I also recommend the Chole, Aloo Baigan, Tikka Chicken, Curry Chicken, and Tandoori Chicken. Their basmati rice is also amazing. Waitstaff is super friendly and listens to you, that is a plus for me! Bon appetit!
google avatar

Yelp
This is definitely one of the best Indian meals I've had. Each dish was so flavorful. I loved the dosa, butter chicken, goat vindaloo. I would have ordered their enter menu if I could. Their masala chai was great. I would stick to the meat dishes. Not the best palak panner I've hard. Cheese was quite hard and the spinach was very dark. We went around 7pm at dinner time and had to wait about 20 minutes. It was very popular with families and foodies. I liked the booth seating and even though the restaurant was at full capacity, it wasn't too loud and I felt like each table had its own privacy because there was enough space between them. The woman running the show was extremely efficient. She was good. She took our order, gave great recommendations, super friendly, and was quick with our needs. The two other employees were nowhere as efficient as her. The downside is our masala chai at the end literally took ~15 + minutes. I'm not sure if they had to reboil the water, but it took extremely long that we almost wanted to get the bill to leave.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Friendly wait staff. Not a fancy place using Corning ware for dishes. Prices were a little high but ok. Had the lentil soup which I though was excellent with the right amount of spice. Had the shrimp Madras - medium heat. It could have been a bit spicer . The Madras had a sweet undertone, which I though was unusual. Overall, give them a try
google avatar

Praveen C.

Yelp
Hands down the best butter chicken in Montreal. The long drive to that end of the city is worth it! I've tried the Butter Chicken, Lamb Curry, and Masala Dosa - and I rate them in that order. My Friends tried the Chicken Tikka and Tandoori chicken and gave "delicious" as their verdict. Appetizers are good but nothing worth mentioning. Service is prompt and Friendly. Accepts Credit Cards. P.s. : if you end up there, don't leave without getting that butter chicken! Trust me, you won't regret.
google avatar

Bowman W.

Yelp
Hidden gem located in the West Island. Food is excellent, spices are amazing. This is the spot to go for Indian food. I've tried others and nothing compares. It is so good that my friend goes there regularly even though he lives in the plateau. The place is not big so be prepared for a line on busy nights.

Neha T.

Yelp
Amazing goat curry and naan, generous portions. Definitely recommend. Small place and doesnt take réservations, wait in line on weekends.
google avatar

Victor F.

Yelp
After being told by three separate friends that this is either their favorite restaurant, or favorite indian food they've had, I had to try it. They were not wrong. This is hands down the best butter chicken I've ever tasted in my life. Excellent service, amazing variety of foods, and delicious beers. Shout out to Jay for being incredibly hospitable. Next time I'm in Montreal, I know my first stop.
google avatar

Dimitri C.

Yelp
It all starts with the service. As soon as you walk in your welcomed like family. The food is simply exceptional. The butter chicken is a must. The chole also very good. Nothing here is fried. This is the best Indian restaurant I've ever tried (Bombay mahal doesn't come close!) special thank you to Jay for giving us a perfect dining experience. We would come back just for you but the food speaks for itself. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Danny H.

Yelp
Best Indian in Montreal!! I now live in FL and I make sure to visit them every time Im in town! have the butter Chicken, the Chicken vendelu...this appetizer with chick peas..always forget the name... only problem is that its small...and can take long for the food if you come at a busy time.. but well worth the wait!
google avatar

Sylvie L.

Yelp
Our favorite Indian restaurant in the greater Montreal period. Try it and you'll understand why.
google avatar

Mona P.

Yelp
One of our favourite places to grab lunch or dinner! Our family been going there for years and the legacy continues.. they have something for everyone on their menu.. vegetarian friendly.. nice Indian beers.. the butter chicken the the best we have ever tasted.. the food is the closest to home made indian cuisine.. pick and choose anything on the menu and you won't be disappointed.. to top it off, always courteous and great service!! Would recommend with eyes closed !!
google avatar

Oktay T.

Yelp
This is the best Indian restaurant in the West Island hands down. Food is authentic and delicious. Staff members are very warm and welcoming. They also have an alcohol license. The price is very reasonable for the quality and the amount of the food given. I rarely give 5 stars but this place deserves it.
google avatar

Frank R.

Yelp
Went with the family at around 5 on a saturday. The service was quick and courteous. The person that served us (Jay)was very helpful as we were not very familiar with the cuisine. The flavour was amazing and the butter chicken was sooo tender. We will definitely go back. I think its important however to try to go earlier as there was a line up as we left at around 6 pm
google avatar

Nephar D.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the waiter was very friendly he really help us in choosing our dish. I will definitely go back for sure
google avatar

Rohit A.

Yelp
Their thali are pretty good. All the non-vegetarian curries are good. And we like their chat too. Food is very flavourful and they can adjust the spice level to your liking. We are not a big fan of their Vegetarian dishes or the dosa. The service is always warm and friendly. It's a small family run restaurant which has been around for many years. And they have been consistently serving great Indian food all those years.
google avatar

Skye T.

Yelp
What really makes this place fantastic are the people who own the business; they are attentive and kind people, who really care about the quality of food they provide. At first I thought there could be a little more flavour, but I was reassured adding spice is always an option. I am really looking forward to my next visit! Especially after the complimentary frozen desert we were given with the bill!
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
This restaurant has among the friendliest and hardest working staff we have ever encountered. My glass of water was always filled quickly! Often before I could finish it. The food was fantastic. Hot and fresh from the kitchen. The portions were great. A little more than enough person, but not quite enough for two, but obviously, that depends on your appetite. The tables and cutlery were clean. I did not check the restroom. They accept Visa & MasterCard, but no American Express. There was plenty if parking in the lot outside. Overall, a wonderful experience. It was highly recommended by friends, and we'll recommend it ourselves now.
google avatar

Joanne L.

Yelp
Came for take out and food was ready for pick up on time. We ordered butter chicken and curry goat both of which were very tasty. Staff was courteous, will definitely return!
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
The best Indian food in Montreal. Staff are extremely friendly and the food is delicious. Jay and his sister are able to accommodate the Richard spice dish and they do not disappoint. Hard to go anywhere else when you have this fine jewel of a restaurant.
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
Amazing gem in the West Island! Friendly family owned restaurant, great service. Never disappointed! Come early as they book up fast!
google avatar

Marty I.

Yelp
Honestly, I am not a big fan of this cuisine usually.... BUT WOW! so gooood. Go try it.
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Been going for years, and the consistency & quality remains. Lots of tasty Indian food in the West Island, but this is my #1 go-to when I need some real butter chicken.
google avatar

Bill L.

Yelp
Excellent Indian fair. Don't go looking for Samosa's and Onion Baji. This place takes Indian cuisine to a new level. Great spot if you love Indian food and are looking to try something different. The staff was very helpful in guiding our 3 top. Wife and teenage daughter all enjoyed what they chose for us. Special shout out to goat madrasa. Spicy and sauce were hot and balance. Lastly best naan bread we ever had, baked fresh to order.

Nisha P.

Yelp
The entire family that owns this restaurant is absolutely charming and lovely! Super friendly family - everyone of them! Made this American gal feel very welcomed in Canada. I would 100% recommend this place to others! Food was great, people are great, what more can you ask for!?
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
It's good but I had better... their butter chicken looks like a soup and it's kind of over priced compared to many other good Indian places. I recommend trying it but I wouldn't go there a second time.

Levon I.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite place to eat (Indian or otherwise). I often always get the same things but that is because the food is always amazing. The bombay chole chaat, aloo gobi, chicken tandoori and lamb madras are great. Also, the staff is super friendly and make you feel at home. I am suprised at seeing any negative reviews as I have never had a disappointing experience here.
google avatar

Kushwant B.

Yelp
No. Just no. I'm a brown guy and I've had my share of Indian food but this is just sad. Don't even bother with classic indian meals. The only thing they got decently enough was the butter chicken. For obvious reasons.

Arno A.

Yelp
Jay is extremely friendly and the food is the best in town!! I have been to many Indian restaurants and this is definitely the best. It is so good that I keep coming here again and again.

Gigi T.

Yelp
Delicious! Authentic, freshly made food and most excellent service!! The spinach and the eggplants were really tasty. The food is light feels like home made just for you. I recommend this place absolutely!

Lisa G.

Yelp
After eating in so many Indian restaurants in the WI and the city, Bombay Choupati is hands down the best, freshest, and amazing Indian restaurant I have been to. A gem, always busy, they don't take reservations :( But truly delicious!
google avatar

Gil H.

Yelp
This is the best Indian food ever! The butter Chicken, naan bread and appetizers are amazing. This is one of the restaurants that I miss the most in Montreal since moving to Florida.

Aman S.

Yelp
The food is t as good as it uses to be and I know that there are better restaurants that make the same dishes at even cheaper prices and they are much tastier and if like to add that the staff isn't that great either.
