After having eaten at (and been very impressed by) the Bombay Mahal Parc-Ex location earlier this weekend, I thought I'd give the NDG location a try as I live in the neighbourhood and would love to find a local Indian restaurant of similar quality.
I ordered the chicken vindaloo along with steamed rice, naan, and an appetizer of lentil dhal. The first thing I noticed was the prices punched in by the staff member were much higher than what was advertised on their website. When I mentioned this he altered the price, though the total was still more than if I had simply ordered on Uber Eats for pick-up. I am not sure if this was an honest mistake, or a blatant attempt at an upcharge, but it certainly wasn’t the best way to start my dining experience. If the chicken vindaloo is indeed $16, the $12 listing on the website should be updated.
The food arrived quickly and the table service was fine. The inclusion of a free bottle of water and disappointingly bland vindaloo cannot help but lead me to suspect that I might have received the “Gora version” of the dish. I include this in my review in case anyone else with a light complexion likes their vindaloo spicy and visits this restaurant... just be sure to ask for the full spice when ordering.
I’m not normally one to fuss about atmosphere, but in comparison to the Parc-Ex location I feel compelled to mention it. While that spot is bright, bustling, and clean. This location had uncleared tables, somewhat dour staff, and a generally uncaring vibe.
With several other Indian restaurants within walking distance on Sherbrooke, unfortunately my search for one to visit consistently as a local will have to continue.
