17 Must-Try Indian Restaurants Around D.C.

"Mumbai was still known as Bombay when restaurateur Asad Sheikh was growing up in India. At the Columbia Heights original, along with locations on Capitol Hill and National Harbor, he shares the thriving street food vendor scene from his childhood through favorites like Bombay palak chaat (a mixture of crispy fried spinach with spiced yogurt and chutney), bhel puri (puffed rice mixed with a medley of raw onion, tomato, and chutney), and vada pao (spiced potatoes with ginger, garlic, and cilantro chutney served with a roll). Follow up these snacks with the Bombay thali for two: an assorted platter that includes curries, vegetables, bread, and rice. Sheikh also runs fast-casual chain Butter Chicken Company, which has locations downtown and on Capitol Hill." - Tierney Plumb

Bombay Street Food Opens a Third D.C. Location With a Lower-Priced Menu - Eater DC

"Bombay Street Food, the Indian restaurant that started out serving various chaat, Indo-Chinese dishes, and vada pav in Columbia Heights just over two years ago, opens its third D.C. location today (Thursday, March 11) near Adams Morgan. Restaurateur Asad Sheikh, who has also quickly grown Butter Chicken Co. into a fast-casual counterpart, has added a couple new dishes. Bombay Street Food 3 serves aloo tiki (potato, chickpeas, and chutney) and a “chicken 65” in a spicy red sauce with curry leaves. The 45-seat restaurant with a small six-seat patio offers a cheaper and smaller menu (think an $18 thali platter for one) than the original or a second restaurant on Barracks Row in Capitol Hill. It opens for lunch from noon to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Delivery is available from third-party apps." - Tierney Plumb

Delicious Indian food with a bright, cozy atmosphere. Great, attentive service. Food was served piping hot, and spice levels were very good and flavorful; they can adjust spices to your preference. The sheesh kabob, daal makhini, saffron basmati rice, masala chai, and other dishes were excellent! Quantity of food was generous: enough to share. Ramim was our server and checked in frequently with us regarding our dining experience.

I went with my friends after the conference. As a vegan I ordered chana masala with roti and bhel puri. my friends ordered meat and dahi puri. The food was really disappointing. The chana masala was very bland. When I asked for paratha, they said paratha is just roti applied with butter, they seem to not even know what indian food is. My meat friends also seem to be disappointed with the spice mix. The worst of all, on the menu it says one price and what they charged was different. When questioned, they said the menu prices changed but didn't update the menu they gave to us. The owner and management system is from Bangladesh and not anywhere close to Bombay. Overall a very disappointing place I wouldn't recommend.

We had a party of 9 show up as walk in. They accommodated us very easily. Our party has various dietary preferences and they were very attentive. The chaat / appetizers were the best. Wish we ordered more of that. The service was great. They were very attentive to us. Quick to rectify any issue. And unexpectedly had great group photo taking skills.

While I usually do not write reviews, I felt like the service and food were excellent and deserved a review saying such! All of the dishes were super flavorful as well as the Thali (platter) being a great deal. The waiter was so accommodating and patient with our table and even gave us free dessert, which was so nice. I will make sure to recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for great Indian food in DC and will be back for sure. Thanks for a great time!
