Bombay to Goa Serves Exciting Fare From the Tropical State of Goa in India | Eater NY

"When the new restaurant appeared last year in Jersey City’s India Square, it felt like a big event; the spot is at 785 Newark Ave., between John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Herbert Place, and is easily reached via the PATH to Journal Square. Sharing a name with a 1972 Bollywood thriller, the menu leans heavily on Goan cuisine (with some Mumbai street snacks), reflecting Goa’s Portuguese influence and its lavish use of pork and vinegar. The owners, husband-and-wife Jainson Fernandes and McQueenie Fernandes, hail from South Goa and still run a beach resort called Salida del Sol; McQueenie is the chef, with Bryan Carvalho as chef de partie and 15 years’ experience cooking Goan food. Highlights we tasted include a bright-red chicken vindaloo ($12.99) with a strong vinegar hit that can be ordered with lamb, shrimp, or fish for a dollar more; Calangute shrimp ($13.99), seven grilled pink shrimp coated in spices that leave a chile burn in the throat; a coconut-laced xacupti curry folded into an omelet and served with a basket of buttered Portuguese bread; a trio of minced mackerel cutlets; an “old Goa chicken fry” with a very dark green, highly spiced dipping sauce I found myself licking up; and xaccuti de galinha ($13.99), boneless chicken tidbits in the same mellow sauce as the omelet. We also enjoyed mutton sukka (tender, assertively flavored meat sourced from a nearby halal butcher, Bangladeshi Supplies), a bright yellow Goan pulao, and the pungent Goan yellow dal. Many dishes come with a Goan vinegar dressing salad — a cabbage-based slaw — and if you want digestive help there’s a kokum-based “digestive booster” ($2.99); the restaurant is BYOB. The room is airy and colorful, plastered with beach and colonial photos, and the tables are even named for Goan and Mumbai cities like Margao, Vasco, and Panaji; if you’re yearning for a winter beach escape on the Arabian Sea, Bombay to Goa provides a cheap, flavorful alternative." - Robert Sietsema

Bombay to Goa Serves One of the World’s Great Egg Dishes

"A short walk from the PATH in Journal Square, Jersey City, this snug, square restaurant—decorated with photos of beaches and street-style signs naming Goan locales—focuses squarely on Goan cuisine (with a few Mumbai dishes). I came for the ros omelette, and despite its earthy, unglamorous appearance it tastes leagues better than trendy Instagram-worthy egg dishes: the omelette itself is punched up with green peppers, onion, and cilantro and is sturdy and fat so it doesn’t disappear into the sauce. The defining element is the brown gravy of chicken and coconut, whose richness is tempered by a chorus of onions, curry leaves, black mustard seeds, and dried red chilies; the result is a thick, heady, sultry sauce that begs to be soaked up with the bread served on the side. The menu also includes xacuti (a coconut gravy served with paneer or mushroom), the state’s fish coconut curry, and galinha cafreal, the spicy chicken with Portuguese/African roots—just don’t forget why you came: the delicious eggs in brown sauce that make you keep sneaking spoonfuls even after you’ve declared yourself full." - Chris Crowley

Very attractive decor. Innovative theme and catchy decor made me enter this one place. Ambience deserves a big thumbs up. Bring your own bottle is new thing for Newark Avenue. Deserves another big thumbs up. I tried a curry and it was not suitable for my palate and when i expressed it I got a replacement for my curry which was good. Great great thumbs up to customer satisfaction. Will try few more items and will update rating if it is necessary.

Finally!!!! A true Goan restaurant that is authentic as possible outside of Goa. Proprietor Jainson has taken it upon himself to share his native cuisine with the American mainstream as well as other Indians. The chicken appetizer was delicate, soft and juicy, lightly battered prior to pan frying and not overcooked. The egg omelet in coconut and tomato gravy was a meal in of itself. It was accompanied with a soft and lightly fried garlic bread. The chicken entree was good, but I personally would have preferred it with bones as it would have bought out more of the bird's natural flavor. The late night meal experience culminated with a true Goan dessert. It was good, but nothing spectacular and unique to rave about. Jainson opened his restaurant within the last year and has plans to expand the menu as the cuisine becomes more popular (through word-of-mouth, social media and reviews) aswell as introduce more seasonal dishes. He imports most of his spices and certain seafood items directly from Goa as he is adamant about maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the dishes. Certain Goa dishes has roots in Portuguese influence as it was a colony of Portugal for several hundreds of years.

Great Goan/Maharashtra coastal food in a nice cosy place with a friendly service that makes you feel at home. It's a heaven for sea food lovers with their best being Kingfish Rawa Fry and Goan Shrimp Curry. You must try their Ros Omlette served with delicious curry and crispy bread which is nothing like you have eaten before. There are plenty of other interesting items and you will have to visit multiple times to try them all. I would like to call out that this is a BYOB place and you can get a six pack from a nearby place to make your food taste even better!

Great Goan food. Grilled pompano was to die for. Chicken and goat fishes are average. Best part is it’s open late night.

I am hesitant to write a good review because until now all such restaurants became famous and then lost their touch for exceptional food. The simple menu is so helpful because you already know what you want to eat. I had rice, goan curry and surmai fry. I would be visiting this place on weekly basis if I stayed little near to journal square. The fish is super fresh and that makes all the difference. They give 2 pieces in fish fry. See image for size. The curry is not oily and is not overpowered by coconut. I would love to try kombdi sukka next time. Keep up the good food guys. Enjoyed everything I ate.

Amazing Indian food. Super fresh and light. Not greasy like normal Indian cuisine tends to be. I highly recommend this place. Just try it for yourself. !
