Highlights

Nostalgic, brick-walled spot serving classic Cajun dishes since 1953, except on weekends.

"The return of Bon Ton Cafe, a century-plus-old New Orleans restaurant that closed in early 2020, has been postponed following a fire at the building last weekend. The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate reports that the fire at 401 Magazine Street, which resulted in no injuries, has pushed back new owner Jerry Greenbaum’s plans to reopen the Cajun fine-dining restaurant until at least next spring." - Clair Lorell

We ordered the BBQ shrimp, Cajun steak, crab cakes, and prime rib. All were delicious. The only flaw was that the prime rib came out lukewarm. They didn't have many dessert choices. We got the butter cake with ice cream, and it was good but not worth the $35 price tag. Cocktails were fansatic. Friendly service. Overall, I'd come back here for the BBQ shrimp and Cajun steak.

Claude was a fantastic server, and although the food was excellent, he would be the main reason I return. He was welcoming and funny and did a great job of making our party feel like we were long-time friends, even though it was our first time dining at Bon Ton Café. The food was excellent, though - I had the prime prime rib, which was cooked perfectly, and a selection of their side dishes. I highly recommend their crawfish mac and cheese - it was even better than we imagined. The dessert was also excellent.

If you haven't been to this southern classic cafe in NOLA, you just have not fully experienced the NOLA. The food is just awesome -- always well prepared and carefully seasoned! The intoxicating, welcoming southern care and hospitality made our dining experience an extraordinary one!

Craving for Crawfish Étouffée since we arrived in NOLA. A quick search on Yelp led us to this little joint. Bon Ton Cafe located in the downtown area which not far away from the tourist spots, but this place haven’t fill out by tourists. We came here around 11: 30 am in the morning, and the restaurant was getting packed since the business hour started. We can see many of the customers are locals. We knew Bon Ton Cafe is the place we had been looking for. Ambiance: 5/5 The restaurant looks very old- style, which you can see in many old fashioned American movies. Service: 5/5 The staffs are super friendly and attentive. Ordered: Crawfish Étouffée (5/5): The best Crawfish Étouffée that we had in NOLA, overflowing peeled Crawfish! It’s absolutely NOLA Only dish. Oyster Alvin, with seasoned Rice (5/5): seems like deep fried oysters Étouffée. The oysters and mushroom Rice are soo good! The oysters are fresh and juicy. Highly recommend if you are looking for classic, authentic New Orleans Food.

Came here just for dessert but was blown away by the lovely service, fabulous cocktail (Rum Ramsey), and charming atmosphere of brick, wood, and light Mardi Gras touches. This is a restaurant I could easily spend time in and I would love to try their entrées. Dessert was indeed wonderful and worth a stop. I expect the savories will be just as delicious.

Not good at all! - Very pricey - Cajun? Not really... - Food was lukewarm when served - Had to season it...needed salt and pepper - onion rings were sloppy and half raw - took a while until we got food + Pinot noir was good We were sitting on a two person table at a window and it just smelled like piss from outside. Maybe people outside like the window so much, that they have to piss exactly on those windows...I don’t know. It’s just disgusting. Don’t know why people give that many good rates.

We dined here the second evening after the restaurant's reopening on Magazine St. The decor provides for a romantic setting with a well appointed bricked interior. Our meal was flawless as was the service (Susan). Recommend the shellfish bisque and broiled oysters (Bon Ton oysters on the menu). This will be a regular stop for future New Orleans dining.

If you liked or loved the original Bon Ton Café, avoid the new version. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING like the original Bon Ton Café, which was sol to the new owners 4-5 years ago, then closed by the Covid pandemic. The new Bon Ton Prime Rib is a very high-end Prime Rib/Steak restaurant, period. The only Cajun/Creole items on the very limited menu are crab cakes, crabmeat au gratin, and a ‘gulf fish’ whose species changes daily. But even worse, keep this in mind: For dinner, they are only open from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday. When we arrived for dinner at 7:30 PM, and after we ordered, they informed us they were out of their specialty, Prime Rib! So, the only dinner options were the three aforementioned seafood dishes and 4 steak options. Period. In addition, there are no sides on any of the entree, and the sides range from $12-$21 each (see photo of menu). Not, what we got was good, and the service superb, but we were saddened by the total abandonment of the original ‘Bon Ton’ restaurant, the extremely limited menu (for a top notch steak house, look at world famous Bern’s steakhouse in Tampa) and, frankly, somewhat shocked at the prices of the sides. No plans to returning.
