I did not know who Johnny Mercer was until I went on this cemetery tour. You can't visit Savannah without doing a cemetery tour, and Bonaventure produces the best one.
When we researched sites and attractions to visit for our first trip to Savannah, we were told the 6th Sense Tours of Bonaventure Cemetery was the one to do. There's undoubtedly a hauntingly beautiful vibe about the cemetery, which is the final resting place for many people, such as famous songwriter Johnny Mercer and Little Gracie.
Make sure you arrive 15 minutes before the start of the tour to find parking, check in, and meet up with your group. Otherwise, they will leave without you, so take note.
Starting from the visitor information center, we walked down the road through the gates of Bonaventure Cemetery to where our storyteller provided us with history regarding the sites to where we stopped to take pictures and take in the surroundings that comprise more than 100 acres. They discuss events and people that you couldn't digest the same way on your own.
The scenery is certainly beautiful between the overhanging trees, all different styles of gravesites that stretch back to the 19th century, and what feels like the never-ending resting places of many families. Some of the gravesites have the designated sign for CSA (Confederate States of America), which means those have this sign fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. If you love history, then you will love taking a tour here.
As you walk past the various gravesites, there's a lot of history, seeing gravestones of those who passed dating back to at least the mid-1800s. Our tour guide navigated us through the cemetery, which gave us a different vibe from most cemeteries you may have visited.
