Best South Asian Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Bonoful, whose name means a “bouquet of flowers,” features a subtly glam dining room with colorful lights, chandeliers, and secluded booths tucked into individual alcoves for a little extra privacy. This spot features chicken tikka biryani (a slight variation on the chicken biryani), goat curry with a rich gravy, vegetable curry, and fresh, buttery naan. The biryani at Bonoful is a particularly good version with thinly sliced poultry is tender and evenly incorporated into every bite of rice" - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
I’ve dined in and I’ve ordered carry outs in the past. The owner and employees are extremely nice and work with speed. The food was fast yet very fresh and well seasoned!! I’ve had lots of Indian food but this is my favorite spot

If I could give no stars I would. Service is terrible. Ive been coming here 15 years. The food has gone down hills. Picked up my order of "chicken 65" today, brought it home only to see it look like a dump. Ive called the restaurant immediately to let them know. I was met with rudeness, mansplaining by the male cook, telling me its curry leaves and not cilantro. Im aware of my herbs and spices. I know what chicken 65 looks like. And what they gave me is disgusting mess. Ive tried a piece amd threw them out. Ive attached pictures of it. Yuck! Never going back.

Google
The worst food and service in the town. I have visited almost all local Indian food restaurants, but this experience was terrible. Just look at this beef biriyani picture!!! They put 4 large size bones on my plate. Oily and salty.. service was poor. Do nit waste your money there..

Google
We ordered the chicken wrap, fusca (pani puri), and a mango lassi. Food was good and hot. I always wanted to stop in. Service was ok. He forgot my chuntneys. Restaurant could've been cleaner. Counter was nasty and cups on the floor. Atmosphere were all older guys sitting around, dark and gloomy on the inside. Not kid friendly. We waited about 15 minutes for our food. The food was the star of this experience.

Google
Great little Buffett. $7.99 for lunch! They treated me kindly. The food was fresh and hot. Please keep in mind India, Pakistán, and Bangladesh were all one country at one period of time in history. They share the sane cuisine! I will be back. Very romatic setting.

Google
Here’s the honest experience with Bonoful We ordered 1 beef biryani 1 chicken curry and 2 non This order took around 35 minutes to make it ready. Then we didn’t get water on the table with the food. Had to ask her salad guess what they didn’t give us any. Oh the slowest customer service I have ever seen in my life. Honestly I don’t remember you guys to dine in here. Honestly they don’t give a shitt about customers!!!

Google
What a great little gem. The food was amazing. Started with the chicken somosas with the green sauce.. fantastic the green sauce has a wonderful flavor and nice little kick. We got the butter chicken and the beef kala buna very yummy. The waitress was amazing very helpful with order and even given me a try on the amazing sweet treats they had there. Definitely a place to check out.

Yelp
People are being a little too hard on this tiny authentic place. The food here is absolutely delicious. I don't think there's a thing here I've gotten that doesn't make my mouth water. Lamb Rogen Josh! Yes! And I don't even like lamb! Chicken Tikka! Strong. Garlic Naan. Yum! Yes, they are not the clearest on the phone, and maybe don't have the best 'bedside manner.' But, I think the food makes up for it. I always do pick up. Not sure how delivery would go. But CHECK YOUR ORDER. They always forget something, or give you the wrong dish. Ultimately, the food is so tasty, I don't even mind getting the wrong dish here and there. Authentic Indian food clearly serving mainly South Asian clientele. Glad to have discovered this hidden gem.

Yelp
Vegetable/Navratan Korma is one of my favorite Indian dishes and theirs slaps!! It consists of cashews that they blend it into the actual curry to give it an extra creamy/velvety texture. They're really nice there. One time the guy even gave me a free appetizer to try. The ambiance is super kitschy I love it

Yelp
Yummy authentic food. My faves are the vegetable samosa, haka noodles and the mango shake. Chefs kiss

Jessica K.

Yelp
It's.....okay, I guess. I've gotten food from here a few times when I couldn't figure out what else would deliver korma to me, given how far on the east side of the city we are. Food always seems a little bland, or a little off somehow - like, too much or too little of some spice, or the meat is a bit tough. I'm mostly giving three stars to their samosas being pretty good, but it isn't my first choice.
google avatar

Doris K.

Yelp
Just got delivery. Wasn't good. My boyfriend says it's normally much better so it was ok but not good. Everything was really hot- just bland- the noddles were yum honestly that saved the meal The rice pudding idk maybe it was the last batch.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly staff. Everybody in my party loved their food. I'd definitely eat here again! Atmosphere and decor are a bit lacking but the food makes up for it.

Yelp
This review is for carry out through Yelp. I ordered samosa and the vegetable korma. The food was ready when I got there, and while the man behind the counter didn't say much to me, he packaged my order quickly and I left with a piping-hot meal of samosa (4 to an order) and vegetable korma. Both were top-notch, and the whole meal, including tip, cost me around $12 - not bad, since I got two lunches out of it.

Christina D.

Yelp
Good prices and flavorful food. Was opened later than many. It was clean inside and that is very important to me when ordering carry out. Order was ready and hot in 15 minutes.

Yelp
I've eaten hundreds of Indian meals in my life. takeout and buffet and sit down. All across the US. UK and more. This without a doubt was the worst ever imaginable. None of the promised ingredients were there. The ingredients why you order a dish. Sadly this was delivery so nothing could be done about it except to whine on the internet. I can't afford much take out anymore, I've been looking forward to this all week. There's a sad place in the world for a chef who replaces delicious cheese cubes with weakazz potatoes. "Creamy" sauce? How about watery frozen spinach. A block from Kroger would have been better. No almonds or raisins in the chicken. And a stray, million years overcooked hard boiled egg that wasn't supposed to be. No amount of hot sauce could save this disaster. See photos for expectation and reality.

Yelp
Cool little Bangladeshi restaurant definitely worth the trip. Good variety of ethnic sweets. Dining room isn't anything special and its in a strip mall but still worth the visit.

Emily C.

Yelp
This food will not only offer many different and amazing flavors, but I honestly felt like my soul was being fed. Whoever is the chef absolutely kill it in the kitchen. One of the best meals I've had. Will definitely will be back, and often.

Yelp
I ate lunch here on Sunday, 14 May 2017. The restaurant is on Conant in Hamtramck in a strip mall. There was no place to lock a bicycle, so I locked it outside a window and took a seat nearby. Service seemed a little slow, considering that I was initially the only restaurant customer (there were many carry out customers), but the wait staff was attentive and answered my many questions. The lentil soup was very tasty. I also had Aloo Paratha (potato stuffed whole wheat bread) which was good, and Aloo Gobil (cauliflower and potatoes in sauce), which was very good, but spicy (I did not specify the spice level). The prices were very reasonable. As I was leaving, a party of 12 arrived. The restaurant has several booths with a curtain, to maintain privacy. Overall, this was a good experience, and I enjoyed eating in Hamtramck.

Yelp
Food and service is incredible! Food is always flavorful and fresh- goat is mmmm so good! The people who work here are so kind and welcoming that you feel like your having dinner in their home, Bonoful is a very special restaurant and a definite must-try.

Yelp
A Bangladeshi restaurant with a great selection of curry, biryani, tandoori, and other Desi dishes. I'll be uploading some pics soon, but in the meantime here's the info on what we ordered 1. Samosas - smaller than usual, served at room temperature, tasted okay but could've been better. The highlight were the tasty sauces that accompanied these tasty little pockets. One was a spicy cilantro mustard sauce and the other was a plum sauce. Really good! 2. Goat Karhai - First time trying goat, and the way it was prepared along with green peppers, ginger, tomatoes, and onions was great! 3. Chicken Tikka - Served on a hot skillet with sweet onions, peppers, and herbs and a slice of lemon (drizzling it over the chicken added another layer of some amazing flavor)! 4. Naan - baked in their tandoori oven, is this heavenly tasting bread! : ) The service here was friendly & attentive, white table clothes decorated the dining area tables, a buffet area was setup for their Monday-Friday lunch buffets, and prices are very reasonable (around $6 - $8 for a main course).

Yelp
The Chicken Vindaloo I ordered was incredibly oily and bland. I would maybe give it another try, but there are so many great Indian restaurants in metro Detroit that I probably won't.
google avatar

Kierra B.

Yelp
Service was friendly. They just took forever to come back and check on us. Other than that food was good!!!

Hasin B.

Yelp
If there was negative review I would've given it. They forge the dates on their sweets. Old sweets that can harm someone and their digestion system. I bought sweet yogurt and it was all rotten and smelly. Seemed like it was made last month. This is a serious health issue and will submit a complaint to health department.

Yelp
Poor customer service and hella attitude. I called the place to see if they could provide an itemized receipt so I could be reimbursed by my workplace. The guy on the phone was struggling to understand what was being asked, which is ok, but he started getting loud and frustrated. He finally understood what was being asked, said they can only do handwritten receipts and slammed the phone. Definitely not getting any business from me.

Yelp
Really good food. Love the samosas and chicken 65. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Chicken 65 (at Bonoful Indian Restaurant) Rashemi Kabob (at Bonoful Indian Restaurant) Hakkah Noodles (at Bonoful Indian Restaurant) Chicken Wings (at Bonoful Indian Restaurant) 4/4/2014 In the heart of Hamtramck, you can find this amazing Indian / Indo-Fusion style food. Everything we had here was good. The wings and the Chicken 65 were my favorite and I loved all the different types of Naans we ordered. I live far from this place, but would make the drive for more than a special occasion out here. There probably wouldn't ever be a special occasion here since it is still in Hamtramck. We seemed to have a bit of a disconnect in communication with the server initially, probably because language fluency barriers. Our order wasn't messed up, but a part of the order was missed. The only other issue was, the food came out extremely late. We were really hungry on a workday during lunch. Luckily most of us are not on too much of a time constraint so no one was stressed about the loss in time waiting for the food to come out. If you are ever in Hamtramck for whatever reason, put this place on a list to try out.

Chandan K.

Yelp
Worst place to eat. Everything tasted the same. Worst experience ever. If you have ever tasted good food. Dont go here. You deserve better.
google avatar

Mahir R.

Yelp
Food is good but it's not really Bengali. More Indian type flavors. Got mixed tandoori grill. Was cooked very well with good flavor. Chicken wings are good as well. Jelebis are some of the best.

Yelp
While I have to agree with the previous reviewer about the size of the samosas, I really loved eating at Bonoful. My husband and I ate here last weekend and it was really, really good. We got the dinner for two, which set us back 24.95. It came with 2 samosas, a large salad, rice or naan (we opted for both and paid a dollar extra), 2 main dishes, and dessert. We got the Lamb Rogan Josh and the Goat Korma. There was so much food we ended up taking most of it home. The server was really friendly and attentive. The naan was some of the best I've ever had (and I've had a lot of naan) and the korma was so rich in depth of flavor. I also got a mango lassi, which was a little sweeter than I like, but still delicious. We'll definitely be back.

Nazira K.

Yelp
Worst service ever any time I went in there they just walk pass you and last week they gave all spoiled food. Never going there
google avatar

Amber T.

Yelp
My husband and I came here for dinner and it was an overall good experience. We ordered a butter chicken and a chicken biryani. The butter chicken was AWESOME, I would give it a 10/10 and the biryani was good BUT not the best. Sit in is nice and clean, I would give it 5 stars except it took them a little while to bring water and salt, so service is a little slow but they're very friendly. Would definitely come again.

Yelp
This place is awesome.. They're little expensive compare to Aladin but trust me They're way better than Aladin.... Food taste great... And the servers are nice... Highly recommended... Don't forget to try their Chicken 65...

Yelp
The most unique (and possibly best) thing about this place is the level of privacy you get if you sit in a booth. There are actually floor-to-ceiling walls on three out of four sides of the booth, so it's impossible for people to look over the shoulders of the people they're with and see the table of strangers. Or you could sit at a table in the normal dining room. You shouldn't be afraid to order the Chinese food. I did it (sweet & sour chicken) and it was really good (and it didn't seem like a fluke, it seemed like the Chinese food is consistently good.) They've got both Bangladeshi and Indochinese food on the menu, and my assumption was that the Bangladeshi food would be good, but the Chinese food would be a gnarly heap of funk. But I took a risk, and was rewarded for my courage, because the Indochinese food was good; Bonoful is a restaurant that rewards you for your courage. The Bangladeshi food isn't the best around, but it's good. The service was really good. Also, and I guess this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing(?) our waiter was the most servile, consiliatory, self-abasing waiter I've ever had.

Yelp
Yummy food and good service! Ordered a chicken Tikka Masala dish and a plate of sweet and sour chicken. Both were delish with exceptional, warm, and fluffy Naan! A lot cleaner then Aladdin and better seating for the family.

Yelp
I know my rating is a bit mean but just to clarify, this place is not bad at all. And maybe their dishes with meat are far better. However, I do not eat meat. I tried their Aloo Gobi, Saag Paneer, Manchurian cauliflower, vegetable samosas, onion kulcha and garlic naan. Let me tell you!!! BEST FREAKING KULCHA AND NAAN EVER!!!! But I didn't at all like the manchurian cauliflower. That's my fault though. I wasn't trying to order Indo-chinese food but I made a mistake. I just wanted Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi food. And for the Aloo Gobi & Saag Paneer, I prefer more sauce. But thats just my personal preference. And for that reason, I will probably only come back for their samosas, naan and kulcha. The staff is excellent. Very kind! The inside is so cute, I really like it.

Diego S.

Yelp
It was surprisingly good tbh, lunch buffet was solid. No complaints really, damn. Good prices too, could have included tikka masala for the lunch buffet but everything else was very good. High quality stuff here wow.

Raj D.

Yelp
The place is nasty!!! Don't go there. My chicken 65 had a tissue in it - looked like someone wiped their hand and threw it in the chicken 65. After I complained, they told me it was a mistake. I would suggest you go somewhere else. Raj

Yelp
Really loved the dinner here last night considering there's not a great selection of Indian restaurants in Detroit. Everything tasted delicious and service was excellent. I guess the only thing I would say is that the place needs a little bit of a facelift and some spring cleaning. But the delicious food made up for it! I will return!

Sarah M.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times and love it! They have sweets and snacks to pickup quickly and a have a good selection in their full menu. I also like that they have options for a private booth for family and a mostly private back area for larger groups.

Huma N.

Yelp
Dont waste your time and money at this place. They messed up my order the 2nd time and dont give a damn since owner is not there and workers could care less. Ordered Grilled Platters for $10 each and got chicken thigh pc, one chicken tikka cut in 6 - quarter inch pcs, and 4 bite side pcs of beef and chick kabab. Basically paid $10 for a chicken thigh pcs and pcs of garbage. When called to complain the guy hung up on my husband. They didnt even bother to opologize. Couldnt give less than one star as this place is not even worth one star.

walkabt d.

Yelp
Indo/Pak cuisine is a staple in my diet. When I'm not getting carry out I'm making the stuff at home. I've eaten at a few of the curry places in Hamtramck including a couple of that have gone out of business. For the past year I have been a regular customer at Al Ladin, but recently I noticed Bonoful Sweets & Cafe on Conant on my way to Al Ladin and decided to give it try and now I'm a regular. First the place has a an ambiance that the other places do not. It's also quiet so you can actually have a conversation with your friend(s) without hearing all the loud chit chat...unless you're into that. Secondly, the food actually takes a while to get which means that it's made fresh and not reheated like a some of the other places. Finally the food tastes great, not too greasy or heavy. The only problem I had was with the samosas. I'm not sure what kind of oil they use to fry the stuff but it definitely left an unpleasant after taste in my mouth. Other than that the service was great as well as everything else.
