Bonsai Sushi

Dining room was very clean and service was super friendly and attentive. The menu is very large so it took some time to figure out what we wanted. We ordered pork dumplings (very good), vegetable tempura (I wouldn't order again, needed salt and wasn't very hot), sushi was very fresh and delicious. We would come back again anytime, however, Umu down the street has a more creative menu with some highly quality items. Prices were typical for what we ordered.

Delicious, affordable, good service. Came in on Friday night and sat at the bar, had a bit of a wait for the main roll but was good. Had seaweed salad, miso soups, crab raccoon, doctor roll, salmon roe sushi.

Great food. Best I have had in this area. Service was quick and our server Abdul was nice and friendly. Will definitely be coming back. We ordered the crab rangoon, the hamachi kama, the doctor roll, and two pieces of unagi nigiri. It was all fantastic.

Traveled about an hour to get here from Port Richey to Wesley Chapel on a heavy traffic day. Worth every second in the car both there and back. The freshest ingredients I could ask for & severely good quality rolls & appetizers. Recommended by my wife after she brought me home some of these amazing rangoons. No idea what the recipe is but they're addicting and terrific.

Our first red flag should have been the ceiling tiles missing, leaving spots of the duct work exposed over the coffee area. The specialty and regular sushi rolls are exactly the same size…The spicy Mayo is milky and a pink colored Mayo, hold the spice. With each sushi piece comes the element of surprise as to if the entire bite will be cream cheese alone or a nice blended compilation of ingredients. Turn around and go to your nearest Sprouts, that most likely will taste better. The ginger was delicious at least, otherwise order a bottle of wine to drown your sorrows after wasting money here. I will not be returning and now need to seek out a second meal after this disappointment. I have zero idea how this place has such incredible reviews, those select individuals need a consultation from a local food critic on what sushi should taste like. Side note, I’m praying for you if you need to wash your hands or use the restroom while here, there is a sewage issue and you’ll be gagging the entire time you’re in the restroom.

Our waitress Alyssa was absolutely phenomenal. She was very, very attentive and had a little fun conversation with us. The owner (I think?) also came by to chat with us and was so hilarious. He convinced me to try a little something outside of my comfort zone. I had so much fun, the atmosphere was very relaxed, the music was good, and the food speaks for itself - please try it!! We also bought a bottle of lychee sake to go!

This is one of my favorite places to get sushi. The food is incredible, the service is amazing, and the place is CLEAN! I have gotten all types of sushi here and I've never been disappointed. Below is a picture of the bento box type sushi meal I ordered. I absolutely loved how organized it was. It made my OCD happy!

Tempura vegetables and shrimp were good, but it was a small portion. Salmon, eel, and tuna nigiri were all just okay. Not very flavorful. Sushi rice was chewy and there was a bit too much rice in the nigiri for my liking, but not a huge deal. Eel sauce was way too sweet and very different than I've had in the past at many other sushi restaurants (in a bad way). The spicy crunch tuna roll had no spice, and no crunch. It was just chewy rice. Overall not impressed, but at least not overpriced.

A beautiful small family sushi restaurant Very nice wait staff Beautiful presentation on the sushi. I eat at many sushi restaurants and love to find gems to enjoy. Also had the chicken fried rice and was very delicious!!!

First and last time. By way of context, I am an avid Sushi fan...have enjoyed it in many different countries, including in the motherland of Japan. The Tuna and Yellow Tail was discolored, smelly and did not taste right at all. Could this simply be a one time thing; sure. But to be on the safe side, I submitted a complaint to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).

Bonsai has hands-down the best sushi in Wesley Chapel and north of Tampa. I have been coming to Bonsai since high school and still love its charm and food. However, it could use a slight revamp or remodel since it has looked the same since day one. Due to its small size, the restaurant can get busy on the weekends. However, the service is good, and the food always arrives promptly. The best part about this place is the food. I have never had a bad meal here, and I often bring friends who love sushi. For a long time, my favorite roll has been the volcano roll; I adore the combination of flavors and crab all in one bite, especially when dipped in eel sauce! Their tempura options are fantastic, and you can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

Walked in and was greeted by an exceptionally friendly hostess. Lots of energy and very funny. We had multiple severs stopped by one of which was either the manager or owner. Awesome service. We had five rolls. Yes that was one roll to many but easier than making choices. I ate two of them and they were delicious. Ben ate the other three and he liked them. Good service and great food. Locally owned strip mall establishment. Looks small from the outside but actually is good size once you get in. Nice clean and traditional Asian decoration. Plenty of parking out front.

Bonsai Sushi has made it to the top of our list for best sushi in Wesley chapel. Hands down. The service is amazing every time. We love sitting at the sushi bar and watching the guys make the rolls. They're SO skilled and FAST. So fun to watch. The plain sushi (fish and rice) is our go to. The fish is always fresh and they do not skip on the fish. The restaurant is always clean. It's not a big restaurant but I'd say wait times (at least for us) has never been more than 5-10 minutes.

Had a great experience at this sushi restaurant. We were seated right away. Nice and intimate restaurant . Our server was great, gave good recommendations and very friendly and helpful. We had the bagel roll, candy cane and TNT rolls and tuna nigiri. They were all delicious and fresh. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Been here a few times now and each time am pleasantly surprised by the quality. The fish was extremely fresh (Friday night). I preferred the tuna and my wife preferred the salmon. The ginger sauce the pink lady roll came with was good too, but don't go crazy with it because it can be very overpowering. Also, the wasabi is very powerful here which I very much appreciate. I'll be back more after this past evening.

First things first, five out of five! Second, my wife and I have passed this please many a time as it is well located, but, without much signage, or hearing from others any positive (or negative) reviews, we just did not give this place a thought before... I wanted to next apologize, as I am already thinking, of my next time that I shall order from this fine establishment! My wife and I did not dine in, but, the inside was definitely a nice establishment, with a warm ambiance, and as far as the service, there were three very nice ladies who were very kind even though I was just there to pick up the food. When I got home, and we opened the packages, everything was very artistically arranged on the foil, which definitely made me more excited. I don't remember all the rolls we got, but, we did order the A&A Roll, the Bucs Roll (go Bucs!) and the Volcano Roll. My wife and I both agreed they were all delicious, and we know next time we'll probably get two A&As, a Bucs, and a Volcano Roll. Give this place a chance, but, also do know, for quality sushi it will come for a price, and this is definitely more of a special occasion type of pricing to get you fully satiated.

I've gone to Bonsai many times since it first opened. It was my first "neighborhood sushi" restaurant. Not once have I ever had an issue with food or service. Ambience is low-lit, small but cozy atmosphere. Great for different occasions. Small birthday celebrations, friend dates, first dates, etc. Bonsai will always have a special place in my heart!

Came to try some sushi because my sister and I were in Tampa for the Ed Sheeran concert. That exact weekend, it was also my sister's friend's birthday, and this is what she wanted. Walking in, there was only 1 couple eating, and the ambience was pretty dark. I wish it was a bit brighter but maybe that's what they were going for. We were seated in a booth. They have menus but when you are ordering sushi, you order off a piece of paper like if you were at a DimSum restaurant. They definitely operate differently from other places. My sister's friend has ordered their Krab Rangoon before and said that it was unique. I have to say, it is not like all the other krab rangoons that you have tried. The imitation krab meat and cream cheese was stuffed between 2 perilla leaves and lightly fried in a batter covered in eel sauce. It was pretty good but I wish they were wontons. The sushi was just subpar, I was not wowed. I definitely have had better from other places.

Great service and great atmosphere. The food was excellent, and the sushi came over very fast for a Friday night. The size of the sushi rolls was larger than expected with great fish/rice ratio. Will be back again

The best sushi in new Tampa area! Really generous portions and fair prices. I love the sexy Wallace (yellow tail, jalapeño, lemon, etc.) and red samurai (rice-less and protein packed). Their appetizer shrimp and veggie tempura is also great. Staff is always friendly and welcoming.

I always love coming here. It's close to home and their sushi is always great even if you're picking up or dining in. Hubby enjoys their crab Rangoon a whole lot since it's very different from the traditional looking. Their attention is always great. Place is clean. I recommend them to others nearby.

This is my daily sushi local go to restaurant. The food is always fresh and good. The service is excellent since I call in my order and always get a nice personable and friendly service representative. I really want to go inside and eat since the interior is very inviting and comfortable.

Came here on Friday night with my husband. We had to make a reservation. Place was pretty packed. Food 5 stars, finally sushi place with fresh fish, good menu with nice selection. Definitely enjoyed food. We had miso soup- very good, shrimp shumai- delicious and of course sushi were pretty good! 3 stars for service- they felt rushed and overwhelmed, one guy was nice but a lady wanted to take away our menu and expect us to share one. We said we need two and didn't give her the other menu. So weird, they had plenty of menus. Also they didn't give us drink menu, we had to ask for it. 2.5 stars for ambiance- I would say place needs an upgrade. They had in the corner bunch of tables together and had some dirty towels and cleaning supplies, but then they would cram all tables together, Simone would I touch me every time they walked next to me. They should remove those nasty tables from the corner and put tables for people to seat. It's not very nice to eat and look at some cleaning supplies. Bathroom was clean but very run down. This place would be amazing if they would upgrade the inside, or at least clean it well and organize tables in the right way. They also would need some workers who are a little more considerate. Again, sushi itself were great so I would come back just for that.

We love Bonsai Sushi!! We live in Land o Lakes and any opportunity we have we head to Bonsai! Their crab Rangoon is unique and amazing!! It is made with Japanese basil leaves! We've never had anything like it! We've tried many rolls and have loved them all!! We always want to take visiting guests to Bonsai and every time my daughter comes home from college it's a must!!

Food was delicious. Presentation had a little room for improvement. Service was excellent.

I really enjoy coming here for sushi. The servers are always nice and pleasant. And the food comes out quickly. I highly recommend you try their crab rangoons, it's unique. Instead of wonton wrappers, they use shiso leaves. Very yummy!

I wish I had pictures to share, but we just love this place. Sadly there's no wifi so I can't check in when we dine there. Great service and fresh sushi never disappoints.

This little place is so underrated! Don't let the plaza location fool you. The sushi is SO fresh and the service is 10/10. The restaurant is very clean and the servers are extremely fast and friendly. Highly recommend the Crab Rangoon (in tempura fried shiso leaves instead of wonton wrappers) and the Sexy Wallace roll!

Convenient location friendly and helpful staff however the food leaves a lot to be desired. The chicken in the teriyaki was too hard and the sushi (sexy man and a variety of others) was just okay. the take out service was fast. Ambience was standard ample space and clean.

Bonsai has a new sushi chef. His name is Song. Go let him hook you up. He does an amazing job.

Terrible literally rolled up some raw spinach in some rice. So bland, cold, and just nasty. I placed an order for two rolls, the worker told me 10 minutes. When I arrived she said it would be another 20 minutes because a large party had just ordered before me. Why not tell me that when I ordered then?

We absolutely love this place. We have been regulars since they opened. Our son has been going there since the day he was born and now that he can eat it he loves the rolls and the teriyaki chicken. The sushi is always fresh and tasty and the staff is helpful and knowledgeable.

The best sushi in all of Wesley chapel and Tampa. I've had them all ( ken sushi, kelp, sushi ninja , the one in ybor is pretty decent) point being this is my favorite place. I recommend the hamachi Kama for appetizers. Lightly fried so the fish stays moist. It is a yellow tail jaw fried and it's so good. I recommend: doctor roll, sexy man roll, sexy Wallace roll. All cut thin. With egg sauce and "spicy sauce" (which is their version of spicy mayo). With extra slices of lemon I like to bite after my sushi (interchange it with ginger to refresh my palate, trust... this is a game changer. Even after you you eat a sashami of oturo) They have otoro and uni as well. Otoro is better than their uni quality. For uni I like Izakaya on Dale Mabry. That's my second favorite sushi spot. If you get any other rolls then I can't guarantee the same satisfaction. Boss lady is name Mrs.Jung, she's been here for over 10+ years so show her some love. They don't have Instagram but this place is a must try. Definitely best sushi place around. Other appetizers that are good: ginger salad, cucumber salad, baby octopus which is my second appetizers to get. A lot of people like the crab Rangoon as well they use a leaf instead of wonton chips which is a nice twist. Their spicy tuna is good too, good filler choice.

Came for dinner with a friend tonight. Everything was great! We had 20 minutes to wait for a table. No bigger, Gave us time to review menu. It was busy with take orders and dine in. We didn't mind the wait. The young lady at the front counter was very nice and professional. She recommended several items on the menu. Her recommendations ( Crab Rangoon) did NOT disappoint. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. I'll definitely be back!

Always great rolls. Shrimp fried rice is delicious. Never disappoints. The only place we go to and can't beat the prices.

Very good! Tons of sushi options and huge menu. The service was excellent! They checked on us and refilled our drinks. I ordered the Bagel Roll, which is smoked salmon, avocado, and cream cheese. I also ordered the Hard Rock n' Roll, which is eel, scallop, avocado, black caviar, and a miso garlic sauce. Both were amazing and fresh! Loved the miso garlic sauce!

the best crab rangoons! I always have great service, it's fast even on busy days, the to go is always ready when I get there and I've been going for years! it's my favorite sushi place!

My wife and I have been eating in Song's "Banzai Sushi" restaurant either in Wesley Chapel or off of Bears Ave in the late 1990's for the last 27 years. It is our favorite Sushi Japanese place. That does not do justice to just how great the food and the staff are and have always been. It is my favorite restaurant in all of Tampa Bay. I would rather eat there than at Berns. Visiting my Floridian family in Wesley Chapel, Tampa, Fl. So first time here. Positives: 1. Free Public parking and enough for customers in this small plaza 2. Nice size Japanese restaurant for the locals 3. 5 minutes away from residential homes (especially my sister's ) 4. Quick seating when you arrive before 7pm 5. Staff were friendly 6. Bathrooms are clean 7. Sushi rolls stayed in tact. 8. They have tempura ice cream, desserts. 9. Restaurant only steps away from Starbucks and other stores But...I feel 1. They need more sushi roll options. The rolls they have did not offer enough fish ingredients on it. Most rolls had one or two types of fish and then rice, cucumber, and sauce to cover. 2. It took a bit long to get our food. So, I have more positives but the ones they need work on is providing better options on their menu and the wait which are two big ones when customers are hungry. Overall, 4 stars because staff were friendly and made suggestions. Food was pretty good when we got it. I would recommend others to try this place for themselves and experience.

I love this place. I went to dinner with a friend. We had the Crab Ragoons, pork gyoza, the crunchy roll and the slam roll. There was a little bit of a wait on the food but we weren't in a rush. Everything was fresh, delicious, and the service was great. Highly recommend!

I cannot recommend this establishment highly enough! I walked in at 9:30pm, and they close at 10pm. Yes, they were cleaning and winding down. I was the only patron, and was seated at the sushi bar. Respectful of their business hours, I placed my order quickly, and it was served in as much time. The sushi was so delicious, fresh, as was my miso soup starter. The staff was so friendly. I can't wait to return!

Me and niece decided on sushi and were looking for a place. First time here and they did not disappoint at all. We had a calamari appetizer which cooked just right and was cut in to strips which I'd never seen. We ordered three rolls a California, Miami and Bonsai Special. They were all great, our server Alexander was outstanding and attentive. It is definitely great to have someplace outside the busy city traffic. Please give them a try because you won't be disappointed.

bonsai is tucked into a cute little strip mall across the street from the Wiregrass outlet mall. The inside is super cozy and I definitely recommend sitting at the sushi bar or in one of the booths. The servers are super attentive and helpful It was like they knew what I needed before I did. My sake was was crisp and smooth; I'm a sucker for anything lychee too! The hijiki seaweed salad was so good I almost got two but decided to try the baby octopus salad instead. I'm glad I did too because it was more thank I could have asked for. It had this sort of sweet, salty, smoky flavor that I wanted to put on top of everything! Now for the sushi! I decided to get the bonsai roll because I knew I'd only be able to get it here. When I saw how big the pieces were I was worried I couldn't get it all into my mouth but I figured a way to get it in there and it was soooooo good! All the fish tasted so fresh and the sweetness from the tamago took it to another level. I'm always excited for when Uni is in season so when I saw they had some available I had to order it! it was super fresh and smooth it would be so good On top of salmon roll! I usually get Tamago sweet tofu and flying fish roe with quail inside of it everywhere I go to gage the quality of each restaurant I go to and I was supper happy with the quality of those items! All in all this place was amazing and I can't wait to go back the next time I'm in town. And remember always tip your sushi chefs!

It's not bad. I ordered slam roll and centipede. Slam roll was pretty good! Centipede is alright. It didn't feel fresh as a raw sushi for me.

Great sushi place in our area that is a must try! They have a large variety of sushi options with specials! If you dine in, a menu is given and a pencil to number out which rolls you want. I've only ever got the same rolls but have always been delicious. A little prices but great quality sushi!

$40 for shrimp tempura, volcano, and 2 spicy tuna rolls. Shrimp tempura had old lettuce in it (weird to even have lettuce in it) and was so bland. The tuna was sub par and had no flavor at all. Even the spicy Mayo tasted like just Mayo. Really, really disappointed overall and won't be ordering from here again.

This is our new standby for sushi in New Tampa. The staff is fantastic! There is a decent selection of sake and wine. In addition to delicious sushi rolls they also offer yummy basic Japanese entrees. During COVID this remains our favorite in the area. They do take out and also dine in at the sushi bar at the time of this review. If you want a custom roll they will do it. I made a Tropical Eel roll which is eel, mango and chives with light rice and masago. Delish! They usually have fatty tuna and uni too but of course that's hit or miss.

Everything about this place was appealing. Inside it was calm and quiet -- a nice contrast to the busy Bruce B Downs traffic outside. I was seated immediately on a busy Friday evening. The server was nice enough to say she would wait to bring my husband's hot towel so it wouldn't get cold. He was searching for parking space. This strip is busy as it also houses Bonefish Grill on the end. They have a sushi menu on which to write your order plus a regular menu with cooked items and sushi. A few items are Korean like the bulgogi. My husband ordered various fish sushi style plus a roll with fried tempura shrimp and cucumber plus lettuce. I took a taste of the toll and it was very good. I ordered pork gyoza appetizer. It came out hot from the stove and perfectly cooked. They were very good with dipping sauce. In addition I ordered a hamachi collar -- this is the neck piece of a yellowtail snapper. I asked for it cooked well done. That is, not sushi style -- but cooked all the way through. The server said I could request it extra crispy. When it came, it was the best I'd ever eaten. Crispy and flavorful from a charcoal grill. It was messy to eat but so worth it. This place is a definite keeper.

This is our first visit to the restaurant. Following the placement of the order. The server approached our table and warned us not to return the order after we had placed it, as we had done the previous time. This was our first visit to the location. We had no idea how they could have simply accuse and acted in such a disrespectful manner. Will they always assume when we visit and give us the same warning if they assumed/ accused once? And how many others could be treated this way simply because they look alike? Never experienced this anywhere else. Quiet shocking.

I will always chose Bonsai whenever in the area, great selection of the rolls, affordable prices, very nice ambiance and great people work there

Really good Sushi. The owner is so nice and service is great. I like the accommodate those who don't eat fish and will customize their rolls.

I used to come here a few times a month with my boyfriend on dates. Used to be amazing, but noticed recently going a little downhill. Ordered a spicy tuna roll and it tasted off like the fish wasn't good. Other than that, I recommend.
