On the Grid : Brixton Bookmongers

"Patrick (and his resident dog) have been running this eclectic independent bookshop for 23 years, selling high quality secondhand books at very reasonable prices. Their rather chaotic shelves with no apparent alphabetical order system only adds to its character and charm. This place is one of a handful of real gems in Brixton." - Eley Kishimoto

Really happy to walk into this store while passing by. The collection is diverse and has a great collection of sci-fi, classics, travel and political books. I would go there again. Books are reasonably priced and well organised.

Snug secondhand bookshop, just off Brixton high street. Wide array of books for all tastes. Very good prices. Classy setup and photos throughout. Nice owner.

Books are it fantastic condition despite being second hand. The shop is organised into different genres and the owners were friendly and able to answer questions I had

By far the best second hand book shop to ever exist. The atmosphere of the shop and selection of books is unmatched. I have been searching for a second hand bookshop in London for a very long time and this beats all the others by a mile. I could spend hours upon hours just browsing. Prices are slightly higher than charity shops, but that's expected and given the conditions of most of their books, thwir prices are very reasonable. Could not recommend this shop enough! Cannot wait to go back

Fabulous bookshop with a varied, quality selection of nearly new and rare old books. You won't find everything in here, but you can try. The owner knows where everything is and Popeye the in-store cat is very patient

One of South London's, indeed London's best secondhand bookshops! Great range and well set out for browsing. Includes an excellent selection of S/F titles. Also includes a friendly owner and his cat.

Lovely shop with a wide variety of books spanning multiple genres. Very friendly vibes with lovely staff (cat included). Would highly recommend anybody thinking of calling in to do so, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
When I used to live in Brixton, I would try and visit Book Mongers at least once a week. Now, unfortunately I don't have such easy access, but it still remains to be one my favourite second hand bookstores. Rather inconspicuously hidden down the Brixton entrance of Coldhabour Lane, Book Mongers is like a little romantic vision of the bohemian bookstores you come across in films: it's small and poky, the salesmen are always friend and give good honest advice, and the books are stacked up as high as my head (and I'm six foot three inches tall). Despite the the fact the prices seeming to have gone up over the past couple of years, it's still invariably cheaper than a lot of second hand bookstores I have come across, and I always manage to walk out with something exciting. The sections range from European Literature, Philosophy, and even a special section devoted to Irish literature. One pointer though, the books aren't shelved in alphabetical and there's quite a lot of piffle to sift through before finding the read you are after; but if you're like me, you'll find the thrill of the chase even more rewarding.

Yelp
Brixton Bookmongers, 439 Coldharbour Lane. Brixton Bookmongers is my favourite bookshop in the capital. At first glance it is a bit chaotic with piles of used tomes stacked beside crammed shelves. However after a closer inspection it becomes apparent that the owners really know their books. Obviously changing with what they buy, their fiction shelves can range from Annie Proulx to William Gaddis, Dennis Cooper to Pablo Neruda. It really is a delight for the Cult Fiction fan. That said it also has excellent Music, Academic and Crime sections if my memory serves me correctly. I can say that I have regularly stumbled across many hard to find and out of print titles and their stock is regularly full of quality reading material. Essential for the city bookworm!

Yelp
Friendly owners, good wide selection. Their categorisation & alphabetisation (read: not alphabetised) encourages browsing over finding something you're looking for. Reasonable prices. Nice folk.

Yelp
A dark place with tons of character. Although I rarely buy anything from this place, I enjoy just wandering round wondering how those piles and piles of old tomes come to be in this dusty place. The staff are fine, they just allow you to peruse the place without any pressure to buy. You might need their help though, should you be looking for anything in particular. There are A LOT of titles to get through here...!
