"Leading the charge for independent bookstores since it opened in 1970, Book People is legendary for creativity anda strong calendar of events. The store holds frequent author signings—and we're talking big authors—and book club meetings for all manner of book genres. Those who can't get to Austin can sign up for a subscription service called Trust Fall in which a new book, handpicked by the staff, arrives in the mail a few times a year. Kids are a special focus here: The store publishes a blog written by its own "teen press corps" and collaborates with librarians around the state to hold the annual Texas Teen Book Festival. Book lovers should not miss visiting this stalwart home of literature, and handily, it's open a lot: 9 a.m.–11 p.m. every day but Thanksgiving."

This place was truly a book lovers cave! It has so many personalized decorations that you don’t really find in Barnes & Noble. It just so happens that I was going in on Jane Austen Day, so there was a lot of peeps, dressed for the occasion. I was able to find this great book!

Google
The Book People is a magical place, filled with books and a thousand other interesting things you can buy. The variety of books is truly impressive. The staff is incredibly friendly, always smiling and ready to help. It’s a bookstore that makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. They offer activities for the whole family from storytelling sessions to book presentations. I absolutely love this bookstore!

Google
Book people is another Austin original store, although it never expanded to additional locations. It has been here forever, and even when there were Barnes & Noble and Borders all over, this was still the best in town. They have events for kids, book signings with prominent authors, including people like Dan Rather, and Bill Clinton. There’s a small coffee shop inside, and a huge kid section. Like all bookstores, of course they have gifts and cards. Their magazine section, which used to be huge and fantastic, *Now has only an empty shelf, which is very sad.

If I lived here this store would have been my whole personality as a teenager. So, so many books, creatively displayed alongside an impressive collection of interesting and thematically relevant Knick knacks. Plus: clean bathrooms, a cafe, and apparently frequent author events. This bookstore feels like the kind of mysterious store full of secrets that characters always visit in fantasy novels.

Google
I literally could not imagine a better bookstore. This place was fairy tale amazing. I wish I was local and could tap into all the author events. Selected several books based on staff recommendations cards, and a salesperson was able to help me locate a book I’ve been planning to buy for quite awhile. Also found a couple items in their generous sale area. My 20 something sons also each found a book to be excited about - a testament to the depth and breadth of the stores selection. And the on-site coffee shop meant I could enjoy one of my new books with a delicious latte :-)

Google
Double decker bookstore with clever displays and amazing staff. I went for a book tour event and was so impressed with the efficiency of the store’s hosting. Will absolutely be back to explore more thoroughly.

Google
This is the best place ever, and such a hidden gem! I've lived in Austin my whole life as an avid reader and I only just discovered this place last year. It's become such a special, safe space for me and I hope everyone who lives in the area or who is visiting comes to check it out. They have such a unique variety of books, clothes, trinkets and other Austin-themed memorabilia which is so fun to browse. You can tell that a lot of thought went into curating every part of their two story building! Don't forget the stop by the café either, for delicious raspberry lemonade and the best breakfast tacos around. As long as I live in Austin, I will come to book people.

Google
I found this Highest overall rating bookstore in Austin from Google map, and it deserves a 5-star rating with the rich collection of books and diverse genres. The second floor has a great variety of children’s books, merchandises, and gift items. In particular, i found some novel stuff animal toys that are rarely found in other stores. The coffee on the floor is a great workplace with enough outlets, good coffee and close to the restroom.

Yelp
Cute book store Lots of fun things and great books Friendly people and helpful. Lots of parking and even a little coffee shop inside

Yelp
I still love this bookstore! It appears that many people in Austin do as well, since every time I'm there, there is a good number of patrons in the store. They truly have a great selection of books to choose from and numerous displays of relevant groupings of books to catch your eye. Recently I found displays for St. George's Day, Mother's Day, scary books, and the Pink Pony Club. Sometimes the displays will include other thematic items such as mugs, socks, puzzles, or notebooks that relate to the theme. BookPeople is one stop shopping for your book-loving friends/family members. Stop shopping at big-box book sellers, and stop supporting the monsterous Amazonian machine! Support local business and come visit BookPeople!

Yelp
Huge bookstore. I was disappointed to miss out on seeing author Lisa Jewel's appearance. However the employees are super friendly. I was fortunate enough to have a fun conversation with the employees about Stormlight Archive and Mistborn books. Prices are fair and looking at employees recommendations for books were solid.

Yelp
NO ONE STACKS UP TO YOU! Book people is Austin's indie book store. There are a few locations spread throughout the city. Even one in the airport. Came here with my sister in law for some light shopping on Black Friday. Shockingly it was not busy at all. Well, it was busy it just wasn't what I was expecting for Black Friday. This store is super organized and has so much to offer and is multiple stories as well. However the prices are a little higher than other book stores. I want to support small I do, but I also don't want to spend $30 on a book if I could easily get it for cheaper off Amazon.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
I always make a point of going to BookPeople when in Austin. They have a great collection of books and a bunch of reviews by employees to help you find just the right book.

Yelp
My favorite indie bookstore in Austin. Spacious with good selection of all sorts of books from fiction, to cookbooks, games, cards, children corner etc. Their staffs are always helpful and I also enjoy buying Austin branded gifts and books from here too. There is also a small cafe inside too. I love books but buying full price frequently is not sustainable for me - the library is great and Bookpeople has an awesome rotating sale section with brand new books. I have been trying to support more local businesses and Bookpeople makes it easy to do so.

Yelp
BookPeople is a gem and one of my favorite places in Austin! In addition to books, it has well curated gifts and Austin souvenirs. The glass cabinets scattered around the store has locally made art pieces for sale. The Coffee People is conveniently located on the first floor with snacks and drinks. They also host a vast array of fascinating and fun book events! Recently, John Mackey founder of Whole Foods and author of The Whole Story, was there to share an engaging history of how Whole Foods started in Austin. This past weekend, the legendary Jonathan van Ness had a reading of his inspiring children's book Gorgeously Me! I stayed for the meet and greet and was pleasantly surprised to receive JVN hair products and accessories. It warmed my heart to receive a huge hug and hold space with him for a few minutes. Jonathan was everything (and more!) in person! I plan on taking my nieces and nephews to BookPeople for Christmas presents to support this local independent book store that does so much for the community!

Yelp
Came on for what I thought would be a quick visit, but not so much. Lol I learned that this is Texas' largest independent bookstore and I can definitely tell! Two stories of all the genres for all ages, and plenty of other non-bookish items as well. The employees I interacted with were so nice and welcoming. Although this bookstore is large it's cozy, and to up the cozy vibes there's an in-house coffee shop! Match made! I didn't try any coffee this trip though. My rating is solely based on the Romance section they have in store. They have a fantastic romance selection. Shelves and shelves full of beautiful, wonderful romance. I was happily surprised. Prices are what you expect when purchasing new physical books. Plenty of parking. Come in and take a look!

Yelp
There's so much to look at in this bookshop. Took two book loving kiddos here and fun was had by all, adult and kids. There were so many sections and chairs to read. They even have a coffee shop on the first floor. There are books and little knick knacks that would great for gifting. Enjoyed our time here perusing through books, toys, trinkets, and such.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite independent bookstore in Texas. BookPeople features a huge selection of books with multiple floors and is comparable to Vroman's in Pasadena, CA...or frankly a Barnes & Noble. Their prices might be higher than major online retailers, but the experience of visiting the store is second to none. I attended an author event awhile back with Silvia Moreno-Garcia and it was one of the most organized signings I've ever attended anywhere. I've already made plans to make a weekend trip to Austin to see Joe Abercrombie there later this year. This store is simply the best. If you're in the state capital, be sure to drop in and check out BookPeople.

Yelp
This is a great place to spend the morning! The coffee bar has great hot chocolate (it was only 20 degrees outside). There are two levels of books to peruse and a great selection. Although they didn't have the exact book I was looking for, I can say that the staff was super helpful. Nice location for bibliophiles.
google avatar

Yelp
Two story local book store in Austin! Love this place and great selection of books and novelties. Very decent kids section and staff was super helpful in providing recommendations! It was spaced out very well and I appreciate all the categories and recommendations. Support local!

Yelp
I try to make an effort to visit local indie bookstores whenever I travel someplace new, and BookPeople called me right in. The space was incredible! So many sections for books of course, but also fun literary-inspired socks, t-shirts, pins, decor, and more. It's also much bigger than I expected; two floors, large floor plans, and each space is well optimized. The organization in the store is great, including sub categories on the shelves with signed sections, local authors, etc. among the larger sections like romance, history, fantasy, etc. The staff were so nice and welcoming, very personable too.
google avatar

Yelp
How many actual brick and mortar book stores have you been to recently? This store is so poetically put together for the true book lovers to experience feeling and smelling the paper of a book and seeing what's out as you walk through the many sections. Right off Lamar and close to Whole Foods. They sell other stuff in addition to books with two floors. If it's out, it seems like they have it in stock. Shopping here is more of an experience than just coming in for a specific book. Today it was a book signing of Austin Heat with the author doing a talk and book signing. I already have the book from a prerelease event but I wanted to come hear her talk about the book in a more relaxed environment than the big book launch party.
google avatar

Yelp
BookPeople pulls off the rare feat of being huge without seeming impersonal. The vibe is welcoming, and there are plenty of staff on hand. At the same time, the selection is absurd (in a good way). There are two floors to explore here, and everything is thoughtfully laid out and clearly labeled. The worst that can be said about BookPeople is that for out-of-town visitors, it will make you mad that there isn't one near you.

Yelp
Giant local bookstore near downtown Austin. Book People + REI in the same free parking lot. What an afternoon! The selection is amazing. Well known books and local finds. Authors in the store pretty frequently. Cute gifts for yourself and others, sassy cards and stationary. Coffee shop in the back has tasty food and beverages and a decent amount of seating. Check it out!

Yelp
The BOOK STORE here. We sadly don't get to this place enough and it is great. It has an upstairs and downstairs area, a coffeepeople, a whole section for local authors. Several information desks and lots of employees around to help and keep things in order. Everyone we spoke to was friendly and the lady who rang us up had fun information about the author of one of the books we bought. They use the space great and while I didn't get upstairs I was impressed with the flow of books with knickknacks and items for sale. They had a wide range from the usual shirts and coffee mugs to unique ashtrays and evil eye things...Not sure what they were. They are a bit pricey so something to look out for, We didn't get a coffee or a souvenir so I only looked, some of them were cheaper then you would think but others not. It's hit or miss. But don't misunderstand, the place is great and if you haven't been you should go. The outside signage is like a movie marquee. Its' fun.

Yelp
So sad I just now found out about this gem! Tons of parking first of all and honestly in a super convenient location right downtown! Walking into the bookstore I was absolutely mesmerized. It reminded my of my favorite bookstore in Seattle with that old rustic feel. There's high bookshelves everywhere you look with every section or topic you could imagine. Nestled within the shop there's a little coffee shop with a good amount of seating and it's super quiet so perfect for reading or working from somewhere other than your house! The staff from walking in to checking out to ordering a coffee was super nice and helpful! Really want to come by and work here sometime, can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Stopped by on a weekday right at noon during my 30-minute lunch break, hoping for a quick bite and coffee--only to find they were closed for lunch. Wish I had known ahead of time, ended up wasting my break driving there.

Yelp
What a cool bookstore this is. It has two floors and feels like a little treehouse. It has just about every variety of books that exists. It has a little cafe. It has frequent author visits. By a sheer miracle/coincidence, an author we were familiar with was visiting for a book signing. We got to speak and take a picture with him. This is an independent bookstore and book lovers should support it. There are so few actual bookstores left, I refuse to badmouth places like Barnes and Noble. But given the choice, I will always support independent bookstores, including used bookstores. This is well worth a visit for book lovers.
google avatar

Manny C.

Yelp
My wife and I love to visit a bookstore if we are traveling and when we are in Austin BookPeople is always. I mean always a stop. One of the best bookstores I have ever visited. I always find something I want to read or some neat little bit of merch.
google avatar

Rain W.

Yelp
There are tons of books here. I usually gravitate to the graphic novels and kids' graphic novel sections. This store has a lot of those titles which is nice because many comic stores don't stock the non superhero GNs. This store is a few stories tall with many different sections. The prices are a bit higher on things but the prices of many things are going up. There are book signings and other things here so you may find author-signed books here. Parking can be hard because it's a smaller shared lot.
google avatar

Hudson N.

Yelp
I love this place. I really wish there was one in Houston -- it's much more charming than Barnes and Noble. The staff are helpful and friendly, you can call in advance to ask if a certain book or similar is in stock. Stop here and read a book or browse. I love that on Google Maps it's still called Camp Halfblood. As they say, it's the little things that make a house a home. But yeah buy a book here. It should have no trouble staying in business, though, since it's usually buzzing. Happy reading!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this bookstore! I've a coffee lover and they have one of the best iced mochas I've ever had. It was made with dark chocolate & oatmilk. I paired it with a vegan chocolate donut. The barista was super sweet and was great with recommendations! Loved her energy. The book selection is great and the staff was all nice & helpful. Enjoyed this place and if u like books and coffee this is definitely a place to check out.
google avatar

Suzy D.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with BookPeople. If you want the selection of a big box store, but with a soul...this is your spot. Good folks, great coffee shop, awesome events. Tip: coffee corner carries local vegan bakery, Zucchini Kill, products. Nomz.
google avatar

Yelp
I recently heard that Book People has really cool gifts, but I was not ready for how cool this book store really is! I have not been into a book store in a long time and after coming here, it makes me want to start coming back just to support them. This store is way cooler than Barnes and Nobles and it's huge with several twists and turns into different sections and alcoves. Each book has a hand written description underneath which is something you don't see at book stores. My favorite thing about this store are the curio cabinets filled with some of the most interesting items. I call them Cabinets of Curiosities. I found some really cool gifts for Christmas and right now, they have free gift wrapping which is a definite plus. It's very cozy, has a coffee shop, nice and friendly staff and is filled to the rafters with books, gifts and games.
google avatar

Yelp
A new favorite place to visit! Good way to escape the heat during the summer and get lost in the shelves. Even felt randomly inspired by their cooking books. Will definitely be back again. They have plenty of staff at information booths throughout the store. They have flyers for book clubs and special guest speakers. I love how they have brief little handwritten (and sometimes drawn) descriptions of some popular titles as well. Their "banned" book section is also a fun section to explore!
google avatar

Yelp
An independent bookseller and community staple. This is one of the last Third Spaces left in Austin. As Third Spaces disappear, community engagement dwindles. If I may make a small request: please bring back the big comfy reading chairs and couches. My fiance says they are what made this place feel like a welcoming space to spend hours in back in the day. From childhood to 'first love break-ups,' he said he kept coming back to this quiet space to read and soak in it's peaceful vibes. This place also reminds me of the library I used to attend community event in back home (when I was a child). Needless to say, this Third Space is one of our new date spots. Try the cafe inside on the ground floor. I know I will next time.
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Stopped in here while visiting Austin as I needed to grab a book for my flight home. The staff were extremely friendly and offered me suggestions. They also told me about their romance novel day they were hosting the following day with lots of freebies. I ultimately landed in Crying in H Mart and can't wait to finish it. Thanks for being a really great bookstore!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
This is the cutest and quirkiest bookstore in Central Austin. Everything I saw I wanted especially the socks. They have such a great selection of books along with ordering you anything that you don't see in stock. As though it couldn't get any better, they have a café with all of the usual fare. I actually went in here for magazines to work on my vision board, but was disappointed to find out that they no longer sold them. Regardless of that I would definitely come back here and stay for as long as possible. If you love books, this is your spot.
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
I wish we had a bookstore like this near us! For booklover/cafe frequenter, this place is for you. I could roam the stacks here for hours, heck, I spent over 40 minutes just on the stairs, they have the cutest stuff. What I loved most were the reviews written about the books and the book display for the book reviews was at eye level (yes!) I ended up sitting at the cafe, grabbed some tea and pumpkin bread (yum) after perusing the aisles for my next read.
google avatar

Yelp
As an Austin native, Book People is hands down one of my favorite spots in Austin. This is an independent bookstore that has been here since 1970. My favorite thing they do is "Blind Date with a Book" where they wrap the book in brown paper and write a short and quick summary on the front. Don't judge a book by its cover... literally! Has a cozy and warm atmosphere that spans two stories + coffee shop! Awesome! Their commitment to promoting local authors and supporting the literary scene in Austin is inspiring and they have the coolest events here. If you're in Austin and have a passion for books and supporting small businesses, be sure to swing by Book People.
google avatar

Kay S.

Yelp
Coffee People is the charming coffee and snacks spot inside Book People. The wifi is strong. The staff is really lovely and welcoming. It's a great spot for a giant cup of hot tea in the winter. You can do your work surrounded by books and people gliding to and fro in their happy place. I feel smarter and a little bit hipper when I laptop it at Coffee People. Pretty sure my grammar is better inside here too.
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
If an indie bookstore and Barnes & Noble had a baby, it would be BookPeople. The selection is enormous with multiple floors, but with all the trademark feels of an indie--creative displays carefully curated, handwritten staff recommendations cards, kind employees.
google avatar

Filip S.

Yelp
I love independent bookstores and am so grateful that Austin's got BookPeople! It's a large bookstore located downtown with excellent selection of any types of books you might think of. Their store is also decorated with bunch of odd curiosities that they've collected over the years. The staff is super friendly and can offer amazing suggestions. They also have mystery boxes where you get a surprise book that's been recommended by their staff. As someone who's recently moved to Austin, I also greatly enjoyed their huge selection of books on Texas and Austin, including a lovely book of haikus that taught me so much about my new hometown. Finally, they also have a cute little coffee shop in the corner, which is a great spot to read your newly purchased books. I'll be coming here a lot
google avatar

Katrina B.

Yelp
I always love coming here to spend an hour or so browsing through everything. First stop: CoffeePeople! Yummy coffee and pastries from Quack's (always grab a quack's goodie when you can). I love the variety, specialty sections, and book recommendations on the shelves throughout the store. The staff is friendly and willing to point you in the right direction if you're not sure what to read next. They have a ton of great community events as well, there's a marquee sign out front telling you what's coming up, or you can check the website for a more comprehensive list.
google avatar

Lowell B.

Yelp
It becomes more and more important to support your local businesses as their markets get taken over by giant faceless behemoths. BookPeople makes doing that a joy. Excellent selection. I don't think I've ever not found what I was looking for and if I need a particular thing they'll order it. Preorders are always easy to get. Their card section is one of the best. Their staff is helpful and friendly.
google avatar

Holly T.

Yelp
What a fun bookstore/ two stories are laid out nicely - lots of interesting things to get your attention. Clean restrooms on 2nd floor. Helpful employees, nice gifts and great book selection and value. Free parking, too!
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
Lovely bookstore. Lots of interesting engaging titles. I like the selections here. Friendly staff. Multiple floors. Heaps of books and will curated showing various featured selections. Book People is adjacent to REI next door.

Yelp
they quit carrying a huge selection of magazines when covid hit three years ago and NEVER replaced them. Only books at this store.

Yelp
Let me just say, I LOVE BOOK PEOPLE!! I don't know why I hadn't made this review since i frequent book people on a daily basis. The only thing is that on the weekends it can get pretty packed and since it's located on lamar on a hot area it can get really packed. Hard to find parking sometimes. But it is honestly worth it. I get my books exclusively from here now after I moved to Austin because Book People is local to Austin. Although I know I can get them cheaper at B&N, It is nice to be able to contribute to the ATX community. The store is nicely laid out with two floors filled with books, gifts and so much more! I love the romance novel section and you can usually find me there but I also really enjoy the local Austin writers section. I appreciate that they highlight UT or Austin writers right when you enter. I have bought a couple of their books and some of them take place right here in ATX. BookPeople also has adorable "Texas-themed" gifts. Perfect for a gift to someone special: a book and a mug or something like that. Also, they do daily book showings and authors will come and speak about their books. Recently I got to attend the book conference of one of my favorite authors, Ali Hazlewood. BookPeople is on my rotation and I always come here when I need to de-stress.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
I do not need any more books but I cannot visit a place without checking out a local Indie bookstore and Book People knows what they're doing. There are three levels and each level has shelves piled high with every book you can imagine. There was a a large emphasis on books from local authors, books that had been signed and recommended selections from the staff. They also have a shelf in the front with options for "Blind Date with a Book" in case you're looking for something but don't know exactly what it is your looking for. They also host a couple of book clubs and other fun events. If I lived in the area I would probably live here most of the time.

MJ R.

Yelp
Greedy people must own this place. Tried to buy a book called Eve, they wanted $35 for it. I was stunned at the register and told them to please put it back. Same book at Barnes was $17.50. I love supporting independent bookstores, but I will never support greed.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
Found this bookstore while tromping around town. Literally. Was walking around the neighborhood and stumbled across it. It's an independent bookstore. My friend brought a stuffed animal her daughter gave her and took pictures of Otter hanging out at the information desk and perusing books. She knew what it was because her sister got her a book subscription one year for the holidays. They have a really nice selection of Texas/local books. I added several to my Want to Read list.
google avatar

Lindsey L.

Yelp
I could get lost for hours in BookPeople. Whether you have some work to do, want to find a new read, or need to find a gift for someone -- BookPeople is your place! They have a huge selection of books, related items (stationary, gifts, keychains, incense, etc.) and have a coffee shop in the back corner. With the holidays coming up I will definitely be hitting up BookPeople for some one of a kind presents! Ps- there is plenty of parking! BookPeople has a huge parking lot, a major bonus for a store located in downtown Austin.

Amanda L.

Yelp
This place was awesome! 2 story book store plus a coffee shop?! Doesn't get any better than that.
google avatar

Judith S.

Yelp
We were purchasing books and gifts cards and found everything we needed and more. The coffee, I got a Mocha, was fabulous and the atmosphere restful. Went back again and wish I had more time to visit again before we left Austin. Will visit every time we are back in Austin.
google avatar

Yelp
Great independent bookstore in Austin. The booksellers were helpful when I needed info on a book I was looking for. You could spend hours browsing through everything they have to offer.

Megan F.

Yelp
Incredible independent bookstore! I have dreamed of visiting this place as a librarian and it lives up to the expectations of amazing bookstores!! They have wonderful best sellers and incredible independent publishing books. Got a souvenir of a cooking spoon and a new book by one of my favorite YA authors. Park in the garage if possible, it was busy when we went on a weekend. Wish I could go again!
