Let me start by saying I was born in Louisiana. Moved to CA when I was still in middle school. Still have lots of close family where we call “back home”. Spent most summers there, still travel there often for visits, fishing, Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Essence Festival, and other family events. I’ve been raised on Cajun/Creole food. On 12/19/25, My wife and I are hosting my mother for the holidays. We had a late afternoon visit from family who wanted to visit with my mom. That visit stretched into the dinner hour. We decided to pick up Booku Poboys for a tasting. I decided to order a little bit of everything when I got there. While I was there ordering the person at the counter taking my order noticed my screensaver on my phone, which is a picture of a giant pot of Boiled Crawfish. He asked if I “cooked that”, I responded that I cook everything in here, including that, except for maybe a couple of the desserts. I ordered 4 Shrimp Po Boys, a large jambalaya, a large gumbo, large red beans and rice, and a piece of catfish. Once I got home, I spread everything out on the counter with small plates and bowls, so everyone could sample everything. Cut the sandwiches in half and we dug in. I started with the shrimp Poboy. I opened it up, looked inside. It was a full dress Po Boy sandwich. I ate one of the shrimp and was pleasantly surprised it had good texture and great flavor. We all love the poor boy sandwiches. Next I tried the gumbo, which is one of my favorites. We are actually making our Christmas gumbo this Sunday and have some family coming over to help and learn. I pride myself in being a gumbo connoisseur I’ve been making Gumbo for years. I have entered my own gumbo in several competitions. I often order it if I see it on the menu at a restaurant for a taste test and have had some bad ones over the years. I smelled the Booku gumbo. The aroma was great. I took a spoon full of stock and let it poor back into the bowl. The color, texture, and consistence of the roux was perfect. I took a taste and it was right on the money with several flavors bursting in your mouth at the same time. It had sausage, chicken, shrimp, crab, delicious. Next I tried the jambalaya which also had me personally surprised. It was moist, with plenty of flavor. Next up for me was the red beans and rice, which were all great. The beans were not overcooked and had great flavor. Most people from Louisiana cooked their red beans and add sausage, ham and other things to it often times that alone is a meal, delicious. My 84 year old mom, born and raised in Louisiana is very picky southern food eater, and the red beans were her favorite. She love the them. I finished with a piece of Catfish which I cut up into small sections. Catfish also had great flavor, good texture. The cornmeal wasn’t burned and the catfish was moist and flaky, again delicious. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised with the food. It was delicious. I’m absolutely going back there. We all cook the foods we enjoy and grew up on and pride ourselves in our dishes. But who wants to cook every night and here is someplace you can go for pick up or dine in on the food that you love and enjoy. I’ll definitely recommend it to my family and friends. I didn’t dine in so I didn’t rate the atmosphere at the restaurant that’ll be for another time.
