10 Best Coffee Shops in Houston

"Boomtown Coffee Main St. Cafe & Bar, from the team behind Houston’s Boomtown Coffee, opened in March 2018 in the former Honeymoon Cafe space in bustling Downtown. The drinks here include six specialty lattes (salted caramel, Mayan mocha with dark chocolate and cayenne, and more), and loose-leaf teas. There's also beer and wine, along with caffeinated cocktails. Enjoy your coffee next to large windows, which provide ample natural light and city views." - Marcy de Luna

Google
This place is a little hard to find, but it’s pretty cute once you do. You have to go into the building with multiple little shops. The coffee is pretty basic and not anything spectacular. I ordered a sweet coffee and it tasted like bean water. The workers are friendly but that’s about it. It was a normal higher priced coffee shop that wasn’t that great.

Google
It's a small coffee shop downtown with a simple menu. It's a bit hard to find for the first time since it's in the underground tunnels. If you have trouble finding it, you can gain access to it at the Bank of America Tower on the side of Milam St.

Google
This used to be one of the best roasters in the city, but I have not had anything worth the value here in at least a year. The roast quality has gone downhill, and the pricing is absurd for basic drinks now. There really isnt anything being offered here that other coffee shops do better- including Starbucks. Previous review below: My favorite beans in the city, now accessible through the tunnels. Love the coffee here and the baristas are always nice. Highly recommend.

Google
My first time here I asked for recommendations of what to try, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I mentioned that I usually get iced coffee because hot coffee takes too long to be drinkable, and was told they can lower the temperature when brewing! I didn't realize this was an option and was glad for the offer. I definitely recommend the Milk and Honey and can't wait to try something new on my next visit.

Google
I didn’t get the man’s name, but he was so kind! We’re visiting from out of town and he was like our personal travel agent lol. And he specially made me a caramel macchiato which isn’t on their menu:)

I miss the main st location till this day. But glad they are still going. Love the toddy mocha !

Google
Tried this place out since I’ve heard about it’s got a caramel latte. I wasn’t impressed with the flavor. I didn’t taste much caramel. And it cost 7 dollars so to me it’s not worth the price. I hate to say it but Starbucks has better coffee and that’s saying a lot.

Yelp
I've passed by this place quite a few times during my walks to get lunch, and today I finally stopped to give it a try. The staff was nice enough to help me and my coworkers through the options given this was our first time, and we ended up each ordering the Milk and Honey latte special, which contains milk (or milk substitute), honey, and cinnamon. It comes in either hot or cold, and I chose the over ice option. Since I'm not a big coffee drinker, I appreciated that the coffee flavor was more subtle and it leaned on the naturally sweet side. Would definitely stop by again for a mid-afternoon pickup next time I'm in the downtown office.

Yelp
This place's quality has decreased. I came more last year and the staff were more friendly, and the drinks tasted better. Now, the staff are cold towards the customer, barely smile, and don't seem to care about making the drinks. The girl taking my order barely spoke any words or smiled at me and I would expect more from a coffee shop cashier because those are usually the chattiest. I got an iced chai and it literally tasted like milk. I'm glad the milk tasted fresh, however when I order chai, it's probably because I want to taste chai. I actually went back and asked if they could add more chai flavor, which they did and I appreciate. IMPORTANT NOTE: if you work in the building or at JPMC, ask for the "building discount". It's 20% and that's like $1 off their lattes. So worth it.

Yelp
Located in the Understory, this is a popular and convenient coffee place for those in downtown looking for something other than Starbucks. Coffee is on the higher side of the price point. Honestly the drinks here taste slightly watered down and non boutique.

Yelp
Met a business associate for a mid-morning coffee. The espresso was perfect. Friendly staff. Also, plenty of space in the area of the coffee stand to have a semi-private conversation.

Yelp
The worst cup of cappuccino I've had in my life... not sure what this was but definitely wasn't a cappuccino

Yelp
Service, service, service---------------DO NOT EVEN GO HERE- I love Boomtown (the product, the roasters, the concept) but for real, do you have to have the asssssswhole attitude to work at this location????? Have been here about 3 times and again today with friends the overwhelming attitude (yes they had a water leak? But what does that have to do with your RBF toward the customer?) And tossing coffee to a customer- just so lucky I wasn't the person at the counter. I am sad that this is ok with management. Won't be back here- Houston is CHOCK full of roasters and places to get a great cuppa without the crap you have to take from these adolescent puckers....and the quote about how hard your day is going was the icing on the cake- MGMNT PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS!?!?

Yelp
Glad to see this Boomtown location up this week in Understory. I came by for an afternoon coffee and ordered a Toddy Mocha. The staff was extremely helpful and quick. By the time I had ordered and paid my drink was almost ready. No line while I ordered so I'm sure it'll be different in the morning but I'll definitely be back to change it up from the typical Starbucks!

Yelp
Super Delicious!!! I am definitely one of those, "just a little coffee with my cream and sugar" type chick... But I've gotten a latte, regular drip, and the Toddy Mocha!! I do not have to alter them EVER! The guys are my little bright spot each morning. Thank you to Antwon Ernesto and Josh ! Two thumbs up

Yelp
1) I have a dairy allergy, and asked for coconut milk. They charged me for coconut milk. My stomach says it's not coconut milk. 2) The drinks are NOT good. I ordered an iced turtle. It tasted like watered down mud. My first experience with Boomtown will be my last. BOOtown coffee.

Yelp
$6.50 for a vanilla iced latte with Almondmilk. No flavor. Had the texture of blended chalk.

Yelp
Boomtown is well staffed at peak coffee times and they have a pretty friendly team. They're open on the weekends too. Any of the drinks made with esspresso can be made decaf. At the beginning they only had paper straws but there is now an option for plastic straws. Thank goodness & sorry turtles (I know these are the makings of a bad person, but paper just doesn't do the trick). Favorites: Salted Caramel Latte Milk and Honey Latte Ice Capp

Yelp
Delicious coffee now inside Understory! Had a yummy Sea Turtle latte and they were more than happy to provide water since the other places and the food hall have no tap water.

Yelp
My favorite place in downtown for coffee (and one of my favorite overall). I tested every coffee place within walking distance of my office, and Understory was by far the best. I love the Toddy Mocha, and the staff are so awesome and friendly. I don't get coffee every day cause I usually make my own, but I look forward to my once or twice weekly treat of truly delicious coffee and seeing the friendly staff.

Yelp
The coffee is not good at all. On top of that the baristas are SO RUDE for absolutely no reason. We went in during the evening and there was no one else in the shop. We didn't even order a coffee just asked a few questions about their menu and was met with so much hostility. Go to "A 2nd Cup" instead if you're in Houston. They have great coffee, good service, and it's all for a good cause.

Yelp
these wonderful Batista's taken business in there own hands, I aporaoched to order a coffee and said hello. the reply was I can't serve you with one these and he pointed yo his mask. what a terrible business model. I was the only customer present for over ten minutes.

Roland G.

Yelp
Great Mayan Mocha, very smooth and flavorful. Good pick me up. The barista was friendly and quick with the drinks.

Yelp
We dropped by Understory one Saturday morning, and, while the rest of the the restaurants weren't open for breakfast, we had such a lovely experience at Boomtown that our quick coffee stop ended up turning into a long, pleasant chat over two cups of Joe. Here, you have access to the same high quality coffee options as the other locations, but in a convenient food hall location with friendly staff. This particular morning, we had the opportunity to chat with the manager as well as the barista working the morning shift. Both were friendly and eager to teach us about their craft. Excited to return, both for the coffee as well as for the conversation!

Yelp
Saw a new alternative to Starbucks so I decided to give it a try. Came by in the afternoon, no line, and ordered a Chai Latte. The staff was nice, and drink came out quick. Unfortunately, the latte tasted more like warm milk. Might give it another try, but I doubt it.

Yelp
They serve the 12oz "crūd" in 10oz cups. Then they are jerks about it when you tell them. I even showed them how the 10oz cup they gave me (pictured) fit neatly (with lots of space) into the 12oz cup that is sitting on the counter, and they told me I was wrong. It's one thing to be actually cheated, another for them to lie about it. Terrible.
