The 31 Best Places To Eat & Stay In Sydney - Sydney - The Infatuation

"A fun spot in Haymarket (at the top end of the city), Boon Cafe is a Thai restaurant inside a grocery store. You could head here for a breakfast of crab congee, baked eggs with smoked fish, and pandan custard toast, plus a matcha or turmeric latte. Or you could come for a lunch of rice bowls, spicy noodles, and sandwiches. Either way, don’t leave without wandering through the aisles and buying something sweet for later." - caroline clements 33

Google
Loved it. I had the best thai crab fried rice, curry puffs and mama tom yum soup! Loved the pandan roti with ice cream and avocado blend, so good. Highly recommend.

I tried the pad thai and an iced long black at BOON Restaurant and Café, and both were great. The pad thai had a nice balance of flavour without being too heavy, and the iced long black was smooth and refreshing. The place has a comfortable vibe, making it easy to relax and enjoy a good meal. I’d happily come back.

Incredible restaurant and small store in the middle of the city. The seats were very comfortable, relaxing, and nice to sit on after lots of walking. The chair and table were very clean, with no crumbs, leftover food, or any stickiness like in bars—the table was pristine. The food was delicious, tasted like I was in Bangkok, and the menu is huge as well with plenty of food and drinks. Coconut water was fresh and delicious, like in Thailand. The grocery store had plenty of authentic Thai snacks, seasoning, spices, drinks, and others. They have seaweed, the same as in Thailand, and lots of Asia!

Google
Thai authentic food that you can find in Sydney! The smell and taste are almost 100% like Thai! Special Recommendation menu is Pad Thai and Nam Tok Moo. Both tasted 100% like Thai style. The owner is so generous that she treated us like home! And staffs are also helpful and kind as well. Definitely, we will come back here again!

Google
Boon used to be my go-to Thai spot in the city, but after today I felt compelled to revisit and rewrite my old five-star review. It was a Saturday and the restaurant had just us and one other table, which felt telling given that you used to have to wait to get in here. The biggest issue is that the overall standard has dropped prices have gone up and portions are now surprisingly small. We ordered the pad gra prao ($22), which not only came with a tiny amount of chicken but also lacked flavour. The massaman ($24) did have good curry flavour, but it came with a single piece of beef about the size of a peach. I’m not a big eater, but I still left hungry. The bill came to $77. They used to be leaders in the city Thai scene now they’re not.

This café has a warm and cozy atmosphere with great food at a very good value. I tried the basil stir-fried minced pork with crispy fried egg and century egg — flavorful and authentic. The breakfast set with pan eggs, grilled pork, congee, and toast was hearty and satisfying. A nice place for both a proper meal and a relaxing café experience. #genastar

Google
For me one of the tastiest thai places to eat at! resonably priced, large menu, great drinks- lovely matcha and coffee! Wouldn't get the spring rolls as they were mostly glass vermicilli and little meat. Generous with the salad but. Noodle soups are always delicious.

Google
Shop and Restarant in one, order online with the QR Code of your table and drinks and food are fast delivered. Saté was very, very nice and Phat Thai as well. Well recommended place for all meals.

Yelp
A friend had recommended this spot so it was first meal stop on my return to Sydney. It's a cozy little space that is part grocery store, part cafe. We browsed the menu and were immediately overwhelmed. When you're hungry and you see 100+ menu items, many I haven't seen before, it's easy to become paralyzed. We eventually ordered two dishes: - Boat Noodle: Good. This is a dish I've recently started getting addicted to, so I order it whenever I see it. Based one ones I've ordered before, I'd say it's in the middle of the pack. Good, but far from the best - Gaeng Keaw Gai with Kanom Jeen: OK. This is the first time I've had this dish. I'm always up to try something new. It was fine, but didn't find it special. Service was fine. It wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be, but on my next visit to the city I'm willing to try again. I'll research what is the best thing to order next time.

Yelp
Boon Cafe serves incredible Thai fusion breakfast nearby World Square. I was looking up breakfast spots near my hotel, and I'm glad I stumbled upon this place on Google Maps. I got the Kai Gatah with pandan custard topped toast and a glass of iced red tea. The Kai Gatah was savory and delicious with the fish sausage and sunny side up egg. I added a few dashes of Maggi sauce but it was definitely not necessary as the dish alone was great on its own. The pandan custard topped toast was like my breakfast dessert, creamy and the perfect size. Washing it all down with the iced red tea hit the spot. This cafe also has a small grocery section with Thai goods. I didn't get a chance to look but I'm hoping I'll come back next time to check that out and their dinner menu.

Yelp
Flavours of Thailand The food at this restaurant/grocery store in Haymarket is really terrific. We requested extra spicy which was equivalent to Thai hot, and the dishes were a perfect balance of hot, sour and sweet. In particular, the som tum (green papaya salad) was authentic with plenty of chilli, dried prawns and lime. The service was was fast and friendly and the prices were reasonable. BYO for $3 per head is a plus!

Yelp
Nice Thai cafe / grocery store! The mango sticky rice was made fresh and I really liked the pork belly stir fry they had!

Yelp
You can find a large and diverse variety of dishes and beverages in this unique combination cafe and grocery. The dishes are thrilling and challenging, in how they can be spicy or seasoned in ways different than what you'd experience in the US. We spent AUD 96.14 for two: Gelato, 8, two flavours, HOUSE CASHEW BUTTER and BANANA & CHOCOLATE: very good and unique DTUM THAI BPUGF 14 spicy green papaya salad w/ dried shrimps & pickled crab: excellent and watch the spice PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE 17 fried rice with prawns, pineapple, dried sultana and cashews: very good LARPB GAI 15 spicy minced chicken, toasted ground rice & soft herbs

Yelp
Came for dinner and tried to be adventurous with this noodle dish that I don't remember the name of but it wasn't that good and I should've stuck with the pad Thai or something. On the other hand I got to try a bunch of their Pandan desserts! The Pandan croissant was the best! Served warm and flaky with a thick Pandan and condensed milk mixture. The Pandan chiffon cake was also very light and fluffy. The Pandan toast was good but not as exciting compared to the other two options.

Yelp
Only have had breakfast here and also picked up some pre-made meals. This is part of the Chat Thai juggernaut and the pre-made meals are also supplied by Chat Thai. I've had the eggs and toast for breakfast as well as the crab congee and I have to say the eggs are the better option. They are served with Thai sausages and some decent sour dough bread. The other thing I love is the croissant with pandan custard which is a sweet decadent treat. You must try this. Coffee is decent although not the best you can get in the area but this is a decent breakfast spot and it is open relatively early on the weekends - 8:30am. After finishing breakfast, you can get some Thai ingredients and fruit for the co-joined grocery store.

Yelp
Love the cafe settings, you can eat in a busy confectionary place yet it doesnt feel like one. Their kitchen is downstairs, which is big plus coz you dont smell once you finished dining or lunching. Foodwise, great. We ordered crab fried rice, pork jowl salad and padthai. All of them very tasty and reasonable portions. Drinks we had waterlmelon blend, milo ice and green tea cold latte. All of them are fantastics. Recommend MiLO to you out of three. We wanted to try the dessert too but too bad the pandan based desserts are all sold out. Great place and tottally recommend to anyone.

Yelp
My one star is for service not food, read my rant below to find out why... When u walk into a cafe at 10:50 to order a quick breakfast before they end service at an advertised time of 11:00, it crushes a small part of your soul to be given the hard line rejection that last order was at 10:50. Punished for waiting two minutes to be seated and served. TWO MINUTES! That is no exaggeration. What is the kitchen like to be that tight on time? Are they running a nuclear-grade sub-atomic operation or what? You know what that tells me about the people at Boon? They care more about themselves then their customer. That hurts them more than it hurts me. It doesn't matter what their food tastes like, how good the congee or the eggs. When you do the restaurant equivalent of stick your fingers up to a customer you take yourself out of the mix for patronage. Best be warned - Boon is the Thai equivalent of the Soup Nazi, without the humour :-(

Yelp
Great food reasonably priced and fast friendly service. Plus I loved the music selection of blues this morning - great atmosphere. Ordered the mushrooms and gruyere and also had the crab congee m. All great.

Yelp
Positives: Very friendly and fast service. Pleasing aesthetics and clean environment. For pairs and fewer people they place you in the front near very large and pretty windows! Good colour scheme, great food and drink selection. Overall good vibes. Negatives: Only negative is the space may sometimes be limited as it's directly connected to quite a busy supermarket and it can get squishy/loud for a cafe setting.

Yelp
Awesome! Just grabbed lunch here on a whim and it was, well, weird but incredible. It's from the Chat Thai people, so of course it's good. And you can wander through the attached Asian supermarket while you're waiting.
google avatar

Yelp
Almost there. You want to love this market of Thai goodness curated with high standards for provenance and quality. The cafe section is a bit underwhelming. The lofty lights add a NYC soho feel but there is still an invisible wall around the goodness in this store and it's hard to get past that wall without help from staff. Which as repeatedly mentioned is brusk at best. This place has heaps of potential and the majority of the ingredients are there but the food nor the space is singing to its capacity.

Yelp
Very interesting place this one, and little did I know when I first walked pass that it's run by the peeps at Chat Thai! That really made me want to try and on top, there has been countless photos on Instagram about their pandan toasts and some pandan gelato dessert. Oh they have these pretty awesome coffee art as well; rather than the normal art you see on lattes, they make bears, trees and flowers instead! Haven't tried their coffee yet though. They have daily specials and each day will have it's special like Meat Monday. Up until 4pm they serve cafe style food like pastas and salads, but post 4pm you get their dinner menu which is served till 11pm. The food choices are quite similar to Chat Thai and they put a little spin on it to mix up the cuisines, something like Thai fusion but local fusion rather than east/west mix. We're a big fan of Tom Saap so we got that, chicken gizzard skewers, sticky rice and a pork jowl salad. The soup was WAY too salty, unlike it's brother Chat Thai. Sticky rice was made quite well and the rest was pretty good Chat Thai quality food. Would prob go there for the cafe style food, desserts and coffee/drinks instead of having dinner - If it's dinner, I'd go to Chat Thai instead.

Yelp
I love this sort of place, feels like I stumbled across a trendy cafe while exploring a south east asian city! which is actually exactly what happened. A hive of activity, verging on chaotic!, friendly staff and tasty eclectic food. I have had the "nam prik num" rice bowl which is a great introduction to the flavour options at Boon cafe. I'm still looking forward to the "boat fried rice" similar to an Indonesian nasi campur or Malaysian nasi lemak, rice with a variety of accompaniments. The papaya salad and seafood noodles were fresh and invigorating, the green juice providing suitable revitalisation. I'd love to know where the inspiration for the menu cam here as traditional thai food sits side by side and merges into sandwiches and past dishes. This place is an awesome fusion of east melts into west. An as traditional thai food goes, they don't mind their chili, so you may want to go easy if you're not a chili veteran! I was crying through the end of my seafood noodles, but still loving it!

Yelp
Filled with interesting exotic fruits, good breakfast/lunch and a hip atmosphere to boot, Boon Cafe was one of my favorite things in New South Wales! The Boon juice is my favorite thing on the menu--cold pressed, healthy, sweet and just the right amount of bitter. I can't wait to go back once I revisit Sydney!

Yelp
Newly opened by Chat Thai's owner. So we can be confident that food would be good. $1 coffee all day on Feb 1st. Didn't get to try other things. Will come back for sure.

Yelp
Anyone who doesn't give this spot five stars doesn't know what they are doing. I don't mean to disparage other reviews but this place is five stars any day of the week. It is honest innovative and delicious fare. The Chat Thai folks really amp up Thai combos here- try the sambos with cashew butter.

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place ..it looks great. We just had a quick meal before a movie..ordered sausage..great spicy flavour but dull presentation...pad thai..overly oily and lacklustre..pad kapow with duck..ok but had better. Service was uninspired..really bad to be honest. I'll try it again before i write it off.

Yelp
On a recent visit to Sydney this definitely ranked as my favourite cafe there as we visited it every day and on one day twice( our hotel being really nearby helped )....once for breakfast and at night for a desert to finish off the day. It is a kinda unusual little place as well as it has a little supermarket as part of the cafe. I tried off the drink menu both the iced cappuccino and a normal cappuccino. Both decent. Off the food menu i had a Big Boon Breakfast one day , this is a taste of congee, skewered pork, baked eggs ,organic pasture raised bacon, yum avocado , mushrooms and sourdough. Delicious!! And on one evening the desert we tried was the Kanom Pung Yen....or in plain english ice bread with matcha ( green tea) . Also a good choice!! As for the service . That is really good, i found the staff always full of smiles and friendly. Worthy of a tip at the end. The orders once taken came out pretty quickly , the place has a good atmosphere and is clean. On the clean note i found thier toilet to be amongst one of the cleanest i have been in ,in any cafe / restaurant i can remember. All in all worth a visit even if you have to make a little bit of an effort to come here. , the Central metro station is a short walk away . Enjoy!!

Yelp
Well my wife and I were visiting from the states and we went their after a night at the hay market theatre . My expectations were high the end results were way low. To start with the waitress was a complete bitch, rude, unhelpful and seemed put out with every order we made. When your waitress starts to eye roll you when your ordering you know she doesn't give a rats ass about you as a customer or your order. The food came, after it came it should have been sent right back to find where they left the flavor. Bland, boring and uninspired Thai food. It was utterly tasteless . The pad Thai was like eating shredded paper, no flavor!! How do you cook flavorless Thai food.. what was the seasoning, water ? It was terrible . In all the service and the food were hopeless . Save your money and find a place that actually cares about cooking and the people who are eating it

Yelp
Exciting, inventive and authentic Thai cuisine! Fresh flavors and ingredient. Great staff & service. Amazing, reasonably prices! Now I know why my UNSW son loves this place. Wish we had a place like this in Phoenix, Arizona.

Yelp
Great new place around the corner from work. Really vibrant atmosphere, Friendly staff and great coffee. The food is made in store with really tasty options. Will be going back again. They also have a grocer with really fresh produce which I am yet to try.
