New Orleans’s Essential Irish Pubs | Eater New Orleans

"This place’s charm is its cozy serenity, remarkable given its close proximity to Bourbon Street. Inside, it feels like a neighborhood bar in the heart of the French Quarter, with lots of beers on tap and a great jukebox. It’s also conveniently located across from Preservation Hall. Yes, it’s named after the movie." - Eater Staff

This is one of the best Irish Pubs in the world. Marsha is the best bartender. She made it a great experience. There’s no happy hour because all the drinks are happy hour prices 24/7. A great idea to call in for a pint & a pour or Irish Whiskey.

Google
Great bar in the heart of the French Square. If you love Irish Pubs, this is a classic. If you are a fan of the Boon Dock Saints Movie, this place is a plus. Bartenders were great, selection of Irish on Drafts Great. Small pub feel, and they also had one of the screens playing the movie Boon Dock Saints at the bar, which was fun. I had the Irish coffee, and it was great on a cold New Orleans day.

Google
Friendly bartenders and great selection of local beers! In French Quarter near everything. Police badges on ceiling was so awesome! 💙

Kara Godfrey

Google
Best little bar off Bourbon, especially if you love the Boondock Saints movie - it’s always playing!

Google
Party dive bar. Great place to grab a drink while everyone else is in the more club like spots. Bartender was friendly and fast. Crowd was having a great time. Love all the little decorative details in this spot. Irish because they have and Harp but don't expect anything else that's not domestic. Bathroom exists but use at own risk. If you are hanging in this area you probably don't mind just happy to have one. Overall I liked Boondocks, just a solid small bar with solid vibes.

Google
This bar is awesome, the beer is cold, the staff is awesome, and it's named after one of my all time favorite movies. I can't think of a better way to drink away the worries of the day then this bar. Check this place out, staff is solid, beer is cold, atmosphere is exactly what you want in a bar or dive bar experience.

I have been to Nola 3x now and every time I go I spend each night there. It is laid back and seems to be mostly locals. Went after The Eras Tour both Sunday and Monday night and the lady bartenders were awesome. Boondocks Saints is my #1 favorite movie and bar. Thank you!

They have Guinness that’s all you need to know

Yelp
I stopped in to see what their Irish Whisky & beer selections were looking like. They had quite a few whiskey options (Powers, Green Spot , & 12yr Red Breast), but only Guinness for beer. They were playing Boondock Saints on one of the TVs which was dope to see and the ambiance was like a clean dive bar. Service was fast and attentive. Didn't try any food, so I'll update whenever I return.

Yelp
Looking for a bar where you can hear yourself think, have a nice pint, chat with locals? This is it. And, if you have never had a Bloody Mary with Guinness, you are missing out on a great experience. Friendly bartender, great vibe.

Yelp
This somewhat divey French quarter bar has been a mainstay. I've walked into this place when you can barely fit one more person and everyone is elbow to elbow drinking happily. Other times, I was the sole soul at the bar. The movie "Boondock Saint" plays constantly on the tv. While the Bloody Mary's are not near as good as they were in the past, they still are tasty and each gets a nice splash of Guinness for some extra tasty flavor. Don't pass up this little bar with a rich history and a ton of nostalgia. Guinness in each one

Yelp
Another shotgun style dive bar near Pat O's. This one is usually hopping so it's rare that we go here. It's nicer than the others on the block with friendly bartenders and decent bathrooms.
google avatar

Cat Z.

Yelp
The coolest hole in the wall dive bar in the quarter. Bartender had a "spin-the-wheel" game to get a free shot of something. Stopped in on a pub crawl with friends awhile back and never got around to reviewing. Also a man was asleep on one of the benches and they let the poor guy sleep. Nice place and nice people! Also very affordable compared to other places in the Quarter.

Yelp
It's nice kitschy little place with the namesake movie playing. It was nice to nice my wallet a little reprieve. 2 drinks + tip was $18, we were dropping $18 on single drinks in a lot of other places around town. Server was fabulous!

Yelp
We ordered a few drinks and wanted to just sit for a bit. However, we were kicked out for "bad vibes" and for not showing our ID's at the exact same time. I highly do NOT recommend this bar. They are extremely rude and not worth your time. Skip this bar and choose the many other nicer bars in the area.

Yelp
super cool local bar very close to bourbon. hubby was very happy they poured a proper Guinness.

Yelp
By far my favorite bar in NOLA. A local friend of mine recommended it as he knew I'm fond of dive bars :-) Just a half block off of the chaos of Bourbon St - I've never seen this place too crowded - even when there are people lined up across the street to get in to another bar. No nonsense bartenders, reasonable prices for a tourist area and the noise level is low enough you can have an actual conversation without shouting. Adding to my list of great dive bars around the country (and making that list if I don't have one).
google avatar

Yelp
Went in to buy and was turned down because I looked young. Had my unexpired ID and proof that I had a new one in the mail (address change) on top of my Covid shots and booster and the older lady behind the bar still said no. My boyfriend went in and wasn't carded or asked for Covid card verification. It was rude of them to not even check my age on a valid ID and valid paperwork. Make sure you don't look like your in college or have a man with you, Heaven forbid *eyeroll. I always leave a heavy tip and buy expensive bourbon. I'm sure he left a great tip. Because that's what we do. Need to retrain your bartenders apparently.

Yelp
come every year for French Qtr Fest. Recommended by a local who hits every bar and chose this one as one of his favorites. Best part is super easy to get to if you are near Jackson Square (which is center of where everything is happening) Rarely crowded (uh-oh, I should give a lower rating), especially mid-afternoon, which is the best time to get out of the heat and knock down a couple of pickle backs with the spicy green bean juice. Lots of regulars, so be friendly but cautious of which seat you take. Fun place, definitely will come back

Yelp
Not a whole lot to say about this bar other than that it is one of our favorite go-to places when we're visiting NOLA. Friendly staff, decent pours, and a good amount of regulars and locals (which is always a good sign). It's just a great fun place to sit and chill if you want to avoid Bourbon Street but still be close enough to keep your options open. We will keep coming back for sure. The bottom line: A good friendly bar and a great place to take a break.

Yelp
Awesome little dive bar right off the main drag of Bourbon Street. My boyfriend and I stopped in to kill some time before dinner reservations and were not disappointed. The place is small and dimly lit but the bartender was friendly and there were only a handful on people in the bar (locals mostly and they all knew each other). The drinks were cheap (especially compared to CA prices) and we enjoyed chatting with the locals and having a few rounds before making our way to dinner. And yes, of course, they had the movie "Boondock Saint" playing on one TV above the bar. Rest easy my Irish friends.

Yelp
Cool little spot located in the French quarter. I was intrigued by this place because it was named after the awesome movie. We came to watch some football. Limited space and you can tell it's more a locals bar, which is what we loved about it. No frills, just drinks and sports. There were stools around the bar area and against the walls were church pews to sit on. Chill environment and a breath of fresh air compared to the craziness and noise of most of the bars in the quarter.

Yelp
Stumbled on last night after my vampire speakeasy. Great place. Great vibe. (And I'm picky about that,). Mad props to the awesome beautiful bartender (I didn't get her name). Red pinkish braid and super bad ass. I'll get her next time ! She made me very comfortable and I really appreciated that she looked out for me as a single woman who came in by herself. Ive been a bartender myself and dudes can be creeps.. "You okay?" goes a long way. She's amazing and this place is great for a pint too!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly local place with a nice ambience. Sat at the bar and ordered a couple. They offer a pumpkin something something shot which people seemed to enjoy but since I can't handle shots k skipped it. Bathroom were clean yet very tiny. Bartender was super friendly. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Shelby W.

Yelp
Hubby's drinks were great. We are big movie buffs and enjoyed it playing in the background. But I'm a big fan of a cherry vodka sour and the bartender wasn't sure what it was and the end result tasted like a sprite and vodka.
google avatar

Yelp
Our bar tender lacy was amazing. She took great care of us and made sure we had a good touch of the city. This has been beyond the best place we have been in our 4 days here I highly recommend coming and seeing her.

Yelp
This was a really cool bar to grab a drink. Loved drinking on church pews. Got a holy water and blessed my friend on his 50th birthday. Bartenders were friendly.

Yelp
During our 1st day in the French Quarter my Wife and I pretty much had the same routine. Dip in somewhere, grab a drink, then head back out to explore. Boondock was the only place that night we actually sat down at the bar and actually spent some time. Boonock Saints is one of my Wife's favorite movies so we already were on the lookout for this place. While the bar itself doesn't have a ton of things from the actual movie itself, it still has a feel about it. We stopped in again the next night too for an ice cold Smithwick's Draft. Whether you're a fan of the movie or not be sure to stop in and check this place out.

Yelp
A local's joint in the heart of the French Quarter! Or that's what it feels like, and that's why I loved it! We stopped in after the show at Preservation Hall for drinks and to use a bathroom (which isn't fancy....it's a dive just off of Bourbon Street....there are no pristine fancy toilets nearby....deal with it). Drinks are decently priced, particularly for the location. The bartender was fantastic. Friendly, and when we came back the next night, she remembered our drinks! Impressive! I met and talked to some locals as well as other tourists. All fun and friendly. This is my kind of place. If you are in the French Quarter and want something a little less Bourbon Street-y...go here. S'fantastic!
google avatar

Yelp
This was such a fun place to stop while in the French Quarter. We felt like locals by the time we left - all the locals in there were quick to share stories and suggestions for our time in New Orleans. It's tiny but packed with so much history. Seeing the police badges from all over the world lining the ceiling gives it a unique touch as it's owned by two retired policemen. We had great service - even pulled out a phone charger for us to use while we enjoyed our frosty drinks. It sits right across the street from Preservation Hall and serves as a food spot to grab a drink and maybe a quick bathroom break before or after a performance. Don't miss it!!

Yelp
So our first time in New Orleans we got dragged to Bourbon street one night. I know, you're shocked. That NEVER happens. My husband and I got tired of the crowd and drunken frat boys so we went looking for a bar on one of the side streets that might be a little less crowded if not a little quieter. Enter Boondocks. Firstly, any bar that is continuously showing the movie Boondock Saints I am automatically going to be a fan of. Secondly, given the massive crowd that was on Bourbon Street we were shocked that this place was almost completely dead. There seemed to be some regulars sitting at the bar and there was plenty of space for us. We had a couple drinks here before our friends coaxed us to come back out with them. And it was great. The staff was super friendly, the regulars were super friendly, and the best part: no frat boys. I definitely recommend this place if you need a break from the craziness of Bourbon street.

Yelp
I was denied entry despite proof of a negative COVID test. I cannot receive the vaccine due to brain issue and heavy metals in my brain. I logged into my health portal and showed proof, however was still denied access. I have nothing against the vaccine. This is not a political statement whatsoever. The bartender was extremely rude, unrealistic and overall disappointing.

Laura K.

Yelp
We were here for St. Patrick's Day. They had one bartender who was not only the slowest person I've met but had no personality and purposefully took a group six guys' Black and Tan order over my 2 beers despite having been at the bar first and waited for her to slowly ring up t-shirts. Horrible service and atmosphere.
google avatar

Dakota M.

Yelp
This a great dive bar right off bourbon street. It was full of people in the middle of the day, so we had to stop in. The drinks are along the same prices you'd find at your home bar around 5 for like a captain and a mix. The bar seemed to have a lot of regulars. It was great seeing one regular show off a shoe with an aligator on it. We could only assume it was for the muse parade the next day :).
google avatar

Bob P.

Yelp
The guy sitting next to me explained that the bar was named after the movie which evidently is a cult classic. He went on to tell me that the place was opened by two Boston PD officers that moved to NOLA. The bartender corrected him that his entire story was wrong.... and he'd been telling that to folks for 10 years. Always good for a bar laugh when the story changes with everyone you talk too! Fun stop on the Quarter Quest!!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
No complaints for a Saturday Night. Not to full of a bar, block off of Bourbon St. Went here after finishing a ghost tour. I love the movie Boondock Saints and I an pretty sure they have it on loop playing on a TV. For a Saturday night $4 Fireball Shots and $5 Jameson Whiskey is a good buy.
google avatar

Ariel E.

Yelp
This was one of the only places I made it to multiple times while on my trip to NOLA. Loved the atmosphere, and the bartender is amazing. She was very friendly and professional. Great drinks, and the bartender even remembered my friend and I's drink orders when we came back in the second time. This place is a relief from the craziness of Bourbon Street and I definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Great place to stop just off of Bourbon Street if you want I get away. Locally know as a cop bar. Lots of police patches, news clippings, and memorabilia around the bar. Great prices and solid bartenders. Down to earth people who will actually have a conversation with you instead of treating you like just another face in the crowd. Keep up the great work.
google avatar

Janna T.

Yelp
We were here for the Gator game on Saturday and happened on the Boondock Saint bar! Pearl was amazing behind the bar! We were able to bring our own food in the bar and the drinks were a great price! Thanks for my Shirley temple too!
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Our favorite in the Quarter. We make more than one visit, every time we go to NOLA. Great people, blue line friendly, great drinks, AMAZEBALLS bartenders! Now I know how Norm felt at "Cheers!" :)
google avatar

Kristi E.

Yelp
Great clean bar. Fun theme too. Friendly bartender. Great place to grab a drink. You gotta stop by. Had a midori sour and loved it.

Yelp
I can't believe this local's hang is within spittin' distance of Pat O'Brien's. Perch yourself in their big cut out window and laugh at the world going by, or catch the Big Game on one of their many TVs as some Kentucky fans chose to do, during the NCAA tournament the night I was there. The locals won't bat an eye if you're hootin' and hollerin' for your team, diversity is key here. Although the bartender openly dissed some banker type guy right to his face for ordering a Miller Lite with "that really surprises me". The guy sitting next to me and I had a good laugh over that one. Still, this is a place where the locals don't mind who you are, the jukebox is all killer, no filler, and the drinks are cheap. Take a few steps off of Bourbon Street and enjoy a few at Boondock Saint.
google avatar

John L. H.

Yelp
Do you ever find yourself at Pat O's and you need a break? This bar is right across the street and will be considerable less crowded. I stumbled in this bar while strolling around the quarter. I was actually just looking for a place to pee and everywhere else was packed. While this place was also packed, it had no wait for the bathroom. The bathroom was typical of the quarter which means it was a bit disgusting. I easily overlooked that since there was no wait. After the bathroom visit, it was time to get a drink. The crowd seemed mostly local. Bartenders were friendly and prompt with service. After getting a drink I sat back on the bench against the wall and watched the crowd. The ore I visit the quarter as an adult, the more I realize it's not all shitty bars and tourists bearing their boobs. This is one of the more local places, and I encourage you to check it out.

Yelp
Arguably one of the best bars in New Orleans. I first discovered it years ago, after a legendary night of bar hoping on an afternoon when you just want to crawl up and die. We, of course, love the movie and were drawn to the name, and once we discovered that they played the movie 24/7, we were there for the duration. The rest of the afternoon was spent nursing our hangovers with some pretty tasty cocktails and watching Boondock Saints. Our bartender was a true rockstar and kept the crowd so involved that we had to return the following year. Sadly, she had moved on to another bar, but she left behind some awesome co workers that had us laughing throughout our stay. This is a great locals spot that seems to get the fact that a good bar is all about entertainment, showmanship, and charm. Hands down one of my favorite bars in New Orleans, You might walk into this place a tourist, but you will feel like a local in no time. Oh, and btw, great T-Shirts.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been a long time regular of this bar, mostly because of the bartenders here (Jaime is the greatest). It's close proximity to Bourbon Street means that it gets a lot of tourists (largely from the overflow that spills down St. Peter) but it maintains a regular cliental as well. It's a pretty fun place to hang out and I make it a point to stop in often. I will say that when it gets busy, it can be difficult to get a drink depending on who's behind the bar, but as it get's lot's of groups of tourists that flow in and out, it clears out often enough that if you have patience, you can ride it out easily. They have a few 30-40 inch television that are usually playing either whatever sport is in season and/or the movie that is the bars namesake. The jukebox is full of irish pub music and they occasionally have live music. The bar has an impressive selection of booze and they have a lot of beer on tap (including Guiness on it's own tap, so it pours the right way).

Yelp
My favorite bar in New Orleans!! Don't expect too much, but it's perfect. Great drinks, very friendly staff, and located right in the middle of the craziness without being a crazy place. I've been here dozens of times. Never have they let me down!
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Why Boondock Saint is the best bar in this city 1. Actually plays the Boondock Saints movie in a loop on three tv's. 2. Drinks are cheap!!! 3. Great Jukebox (The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, and The Kooks, very nice)! 4. Bartender girls are sassy!! 5. Cool crowd, get atmosphere because of it. 6. Clean and just an overall good looking bar. That should be enough reasons for ya!

Yelp
The worst bar I have visited in New Orleans. My brother tended bar in this town for years. He gave me a long list of places to visit. And almost all of them were spot on. This is the only establishment where he really steered me wrong. I came in Monday night because it was right across the street from Preservation Hall. After enjoying an amazing jazz experience, I decided to pop into this spot that I remembered seeing on my brother's list. After an hour at the show, I felt the need to visit the men's room before ordering my drink. I tried to do so, but the single occupancy facility was in use. Not wanting to crowd the occupant, I backed out and stood outside the restroom area, watching the football game as I waited. Out of nowhere I was accosted by the bartender asking if I intended to order a drink. I assured her I was, as soon as I took care of business. This was enough for the bartender, but I was next accosted by a woman at the bar who proceeded to angrily lecture me. I explained yet again that I was going to order a drink as soon as I used the restroom. Even after I sat down at the bar and bought a beer, I kept getting dirty looks from the fat bartender and her friends. I really don't know what the problem was. Needless to say, I won't be back.

Richard A.

Yelp
As a die hard Boondock Saints fan I couldn't,not stop by while in New Orleans. Walked in the door and felt like I grew up here. The bartender was a blast and felt like we knew her for years. Interesting diverse crowd with a good sense of humor. Next trip to the Big Easy first beer is at Boondocks Saints

Yelp
After a disappointing visit to Apple Barrel, we headed back to the Quarter and stumbled upon Boondock Saint. I'd heard of the bar, a stone's throw from the madness of Bourbon, from Kyle H and Nick M, so we decided to give it a shot. If you're not into the craziness that is Bourbon Street at night, you should enjoy Boondock Saint. It's a simple bar with a few TVs, including one that constantly streams its namesake movie. It's not gimmicky either, you won't find any of those overpriced monster cups of frozen drinks so many of the places on Bourbon hawk. Our bartender was a doll, very friendly and helpful. She directed us to Spotted Cat when we mentioned we were a bit disappointed in Apple Barrel. As I said, if you're looking for an oasis from the madness - give Boondock Saint a try.

Yelp
This was another bar off of Bourbon street that I absolutely loved! We spent a lot of time here because of the lovely bartenders, affordable brews, and chill atmosphere. It's a great dive! If you just want to get away from Bourbon street craziness for a while, I recommend this place!

Rosalie H.

Yelp
Cool bar in The French Quarter. Lived all the police badges and a very cute bubbly bartender. Nice corner bar atmosphere
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
Every time we come to NOLA, we come here. This is the BEST dive bar on Bourbon!! Best bartenders, best locals. We've always felt welcome here. $2 beers and super cheap cocktails. My wife and I drank all night with a $35 tab. Also, check out the locale and keep coming back here to get a drink to go. A great way to save money.
google avatar

Gracie C.

Yelp
If I lived here, this would be my bar! It's far from being a tourist traps, the bartenders are so great, and the vibe in here is as if you are instantly a part of the family. They don't do the foo foo drinks like they do on Bourbon Street. This is a "real bar." It may look a little dive-y or some may say that it has character. The first night, I went in with a group of 15 and the bartender was great. She got everyone their drinks and then after she saw us taking pictures, she offered to take the picture. She hooped on a chair and click! The picture came out great. I went back on a Monday hoping to catch my Chargers game. First off, the bartender there was, again, great. Different bartender but they made me feel at home. It was nice because they, as well as the customers, knew two of my friends (they were not with me and live in NOLA) so they just included me in their conversation after that. These locals are not snooty and embraced me. The bartender and the customers made some suggestions and after a few drinks, I thanked them and began walking just to see two of the locals walk to us and lead us to the new location. Nothing like NOLA love. This place is just what you expect from real New Orleans. RECOMMENDATION: If you're going to Preservation Hall, walk here before to have a drink and order a large drink to go so you can take it into the Hall since they don't sell drinks.
google avatar

Michele P.

Yelp
First time here! Some friends were drinking it up. It's very laid back, very mixed crowd. It's got the influence of an Irish Pub, with the trashiness we love about New Orleans. Very reasonably priced drinks, and Jenny K, the bartender, was AWESOME. Recommend you stop by!! Don't do it if you need vodka infused with elderberries picked by Tibetan monks, then hand rubbed by virgins until they juice. Stop by if you want to find some new people to chill and chat with.
google avatar

Corey C.

Yelp
Great dive bar in the heart of the French quarter. Right across the street from Pat O's, you can enjoy a drink with your friends without the long wait and inflated prices. Irish coffee is good and so was the beer on tap. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
I finally got the chance to visit New Orleans again last week with my grown daughter, and made this my first stop as it's always been a favorite of mine. I took my daughter here to say hi to Jaime and she actually remembered me after 3 long years away. Definitely go here if you want great service along with very strong pours on mixed drinks.

Yelp
This was a nice, quite bar off of Bourbon Street. Pearl, the bartender, was super nice and attentive. This was one of our first stops of our trip but we will definitely will back in the next few days to see Pearl.
