Tucson’s Best New Restaurants - Eater Phoenix

"Borderlands’ second Tucson location features fun Mexican bar food from chef Maria Mazon. The laid-back neighborhood bar vibe is accentuated with their queso con cerveza, which is essentially their take on beer cheese using their own beer. That beer, the Viejo Pueblo, also happens to be a steal at the bar at $3." - Jackie Tran

Great spot. Great atmosphere. Awesome service and the bartender CJ was very friendly and knowledgeable. Had carne asada tacos and the salsa was awesome. Will definitely be back.

Alright, let me just say, this place is my favorite out of all the Borderland breweries. It’s just a nice little bike ride away from home, the perfect spot to sit back, talk about the week, and catch a glimpse of the sunset while you sip on a cold one. The beer here is solid, consistently good. If you’re into that kind of thing, it’s like a dependable old friend—nothing fancy, but it’s always there for you. Now, the food? Well, I’ve seen it come out of the kitchen, and let’s just say it’s a little... skimpy. If you’re looking to get full, you’re better off drinking your calories and skipping the food. Save your money and your stomach—because what they serve up here isn’t exactly worth the chew. Trust me. I mean, you could probably get more nutrition out of the napkin they serve it on. But hey, it’s all good. You’re here to drink, not to solve world problems. The place is chill—perfect for zoning out with your beer, laughing at the awkwardness around you, and being left alone. Days are busy with the sports crowd, but nights? It’s practically your own little private club, just you and the beer. The Wi-Fi? Solid. So if you’re here trying to get some work done (or, you know, reading this review), you’re set. So yeah, grab your beer, avoid the food, and try not to stare too long at those wide-eyed counter guys. They're just doing their thing, trying to figure out how many whiteheads they can pop without someone noticing. But in the end, this place doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not—it’s just a spot to chill. And that’s all we really need, right?

We went and service was quick! The barbacoa tacos were very good and flavorful they and a good selection of interesting beers. Our nachos were a different story though, they had no flavor and the chips were burnt. Although the presentation was amazing, they were just not good and needed seasoning. Probably won't go back.

Google
Excellent Beers, Food and Outdoor Patio After visiting the Downtown Taproom, I had to try the new taproom in the Sam Hughes neighborhood. While they do offer some food, I just wanted to try some beers. We sat outside in a nice patio area, but as the desert air cooled off, we retreated inside to a cozy space with comfy couches, chairs and tables. I had to start with the German Chocolate Cake Porter that is just that - that famous, tasty cake in liquid form at 7.3% ABV. Absolutely delicious! I then had the Noche Dulce Vanilla Porter also at 7.3% ABV. Great vanilla aroma and flavor. I got in my dark beer fix and visited someplace new - a perfect evening!

Google
Great selection of beers tried a couple of them. The horchata beer was delicious. Had the nachos and the green chili grilled cheese. Both were very delicious definitely recommended and I will be coming back.

Google
Great tacos and a full bar, in a repurposed service station. Cold A/C inside and cold beer on tap from local and guest breweries. What more could you ask for on a hot summer day! One of my local favorites.

Google
Parking can be a challenge. Outside seating is a bit noisy because of nearby traffic. But... This is a great neighborhood bar. The beer is solid. The server is friendly, competent and knowledgeable. The clientele is local and pleasant.

Yelp
I..love..Borderlands Brewing This is the Sam Hughes lication. It's not overly large but not too tiny either. Parking lot is tiny and only able to take six cars but street parking is nearby. There is and inside seating area but outside is where it's at. One large TV and some covered spots. Been here a few times and always enjoyed it. There is WiFi but it's tricky getting the password. You have to ask the bartender and even they have to look it up. There are some non-alcoholic Jarittos sodas there too. Beers are about $8/pint. Just a laid back vibe to this place. Always enjoyed it here.

Yelp
This food is very hit or miss, with more misses then hits for sure! You will probably encounter some chewy meat. They never show you the tab either... I always leave wondering how it got so high. On top of that the service on my last visit was kind of offensive. I asked the cashier for a house marg in a very short glass with less mix then tequila. She seemed a bit confused, so I said just don't fill it up all the way. She proceeded to make fun of my order to her co worker (in front of customers) while I was standing just out of sight. She then gave me a 16oz wineglass filled to the top & completely disregarded my request. While not complicated, apparently too much for what appeared to be the manager or shift lead. I received 2 drinks like this... I couldn't even drink the second. This place is ok & great for some, but I left not wanting to go back!

Yelp
I really love this location! They have a dog friendly patio and plenty of seating inside for the colder months. As well as heaters on the patio to keep you and your furry friends warm. I had the tacos dorados for dinner and it was delicious. Perfectly crispy and the salsa was amazing! Kendra is always very friendly and welcoming!
google avatar

Yelp
Great casual atmosphere with about half a dozen different rooms to mingle/assemble in, plus the outdoor front patio - all with TV/sports screens airing. The big secret is from 12n-1p, M-F tacos are all 1/2 price! That's like getting your drought for free. My friend and I got one of every taco basically (6 total). Friendly service, delicious tacos, and not crowded during lunch. Parking will get tight sometimes though, especially with Tumerico next door!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Service is pretty attentive, beer and alcohol offerings are extensive. Very nice buildout and you can't get any closer to Lambeau. Food could use a little makeover. Well, less deep fried food perhaps.

Yelp
I like stopping here for a casual drink with some friends. The ambiance is great for chatting, board games, or even studying if that suits your fancy. They have good beers on tap and even house margaritas. They also hold trivia nights on Wednesday which seems super fun! All the staff is friendly and I've never been disappointed with an experience here. It's definitely a more chill vibe compared to the one downtown, but for the Sam Hughes neighborhood, it is perfect.

Yelp
Really awesome place. They have two locations. They both have great outdoor spaces and both and pet friendly. We really enjoyed the one downtown. Their food truck has amazing food, great tacos, burgers and fries. They offer beer, mixed drinks, and seltzers. The host different events so def check their site for their upcoming events!
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but everything about it was solidly mediocre. The tacos were rather grisly and soppy-- not terrible but not great, especially for Tucson! The ambience is kinda off (strange rooms and strange odors inside, lots of traffic outside)-- though they do have outdoor heaters which is nice? Also notably: the menu is definitely over-priced for what you get. Won't be back.

Yelp
I come here to work remotely sometimes. I like that the location is smaller but the same relaxed vibes of the other Borderlands downtown. However, I do not like the food here!! It's overpriced for how much you receive and the quality. I ordered buffalo wings and fries for about $20. The 6 wings were tiny. The fries they provided tasted okay but were 80% of the plate. They have good beer options here but no local cider option to try. I appreciate that it's not super crowded indoors during the day so I'll continue to come here to work occasionally but I'll eat across the street at Flora first.
google avatar

Alex J.

Yelp
Great atmosphere on trivia nights! I wish the wifi system or app system would be better but understand it can be tough with so many people. The system is a little slow and sometimes you will miss the question even showing up on your screen. Staff are wonderful and patient especially on busier nights.

Alexander R.

Yelp
Wonderful indoor and outdoor space, varied beer menu and a taco selection that was excellent. Service was prompt even on a busy night. I rate this place as the best in Tucson along with Bario Brewing.

Yelp
I woke up today and thought it might be a good Saturday to walk over to borderlands for a cold beer (solo mission). I was right. On days when the weather is good, their front patio area is an excellent spot to hang out. The two girls working at the bar were friendly and let me sample some of the drinks I hadn't heard of. Several good options available. 5/5 all day

Yelp
Great casual place for a beer and food in Tucson, just east of downtown. I dropped in for a drink and some food and enjoyed the excellent service and recommendations and really like the walk up ordering arrangement here. I sat outside and enjoyed a beer and some tacos while the misters cooled the air. The building and neighborhood are wonderful places to enjoy and absorb and the crowd and vibe on this block is exceptional. A great place to visit in a wonderful old neighborhood!

Yelp
My wife, dogs and I came in here no less than three separate times during our week stay in Tucson. It's a great spot! Nice shaded courtyard, plenty of good beers, a taco/burger truck, and fine to bring your own food! This was key for us since there were many places in town we wanted to try that don't allow dogs. So, just grab to go and come here! The tacos are great and not to be missed. We kept coming back to try everything. Can't wait to visit next time we're in town!
google avatar

Yelp
Their new location is great! Parking is quite limited so don't be afraid to park in the nearby neighborhood. They're dog friendly on the patio with turf on the ground and water bowls. Inside has a few rooms with lots of seating options and the decor is cool. Drinks and food are quick, staff were on it when I visited on a Friday night. Always good beers!

Yelp
Love this concept from the Borderlands Team and Maria Manzon! They took over the previous PJ's Subs Location and completely updated the aesthetic, adding beautiful murals and comfortable seating. This building has always had a strange layout, but it works well for a concept like Borderlands because there are lots of small cozy spaces for gathering. It feels different than any other bar/restaurant in town and I enjoyed that quite a bit. Super nice spot to have a drink and food with friends and play some of the board or yard games they have available. There is a nice patio right out front, but the true highlight of the original Borderlands is a giant patio, so I wish this location had more outdoor seating. For drinks, the Margarita and the Tamarindo Agua Fresca were amazing! They paired well with the Tacos Dorados and the Chips & Salsa, I tried to order different meats on the Tacos Dorados but you can only select one kind. I hope they add some more shareable options to the menu in the future like Quesadillas, Nachos, or Tapas to split amongst friends. Service was friendly and kind, you can tell they're just opening and it's already really busy so expect to be patient waiting on your food orders. Worth the wait!

Yelp
I stopped here after a six-mile walk along the Loop. I enjoy Borderlands beer at their Toole location and wanted to try this one. I got here at 4pm on Saturday (yesterday). There were several families with small children and four other dogs on the patio. My German Shepherd Dog Fritz is still getting used to being around other dogs and children, so I brought him in cautiously and sat in a corner where two cornhole boards were. He did well and even relaxed when two young boys came by to pick up some beanbags. He didn't bark at a nearby dog. He passed his test and didn't even need a pint of Prickly Wheat Ale to calm down. Service was fast and friendly, as expected. I also had a German Chocolate Porter and ordered some Sonoran-style chicken tacos when the kitchen finally opened after 4pm. The tacos were well presented, with plenty of chicken and white cheese. They are fried and messy to eat without a fork, though. The bill for two beers and the tacos was $28. The inside is also nicely decorated, with professional murals, cozy rooms and two different sets of restrooms, but dogs are only allowed on the patio due to understandable health regulations. It's a corner location on a busy street with a small parking lot. This is its one flaw. While I was able to park in a spot right along the patio, getting out was not easy with the many people coming and going once the kitchen opened shortly after 4pm. I was afraid of hitting anyone, especially the children, so when I left I simply drove over the cement bar to get on Tucson Blvd.

Yelp
Love, love, love Borderlands' new spot. I've been here four times since it's opened and can't get enough. It's been busy every time, but the staff is fast and efficient and there's plenty of seating. The spiked agua frescas are creative and refreshing and every food item I've tried has been delicious (I'm still working my way through the many chilaquiles options.) Pro tip- bring friends so you aren't tempted to eat an entire order of cerveza con queso by yourself.

Yelp
Ok got to stop by here, and I have to say the place is quite nice! Various sitting areas including outside, all with a welcoming and comfortable vibe! Service was fast and friendly, the beers though not the best I've ever had, are pretty good, didn't get to try the food as I was meeting my wife for dinner elsewhere, but it looks amazing! And the best part is I managed to go my entire visit without yelling out about my penis, why because I'm an adult and understand such conversations are inappropriate in a mixed setting! Because my parents raised me right and I'm not a self entitled moron! I highly recommend checking this place out!
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
I am so happy with the 6th street location! I love both locations, but it's nice to have something a little closer to the Uni and with a little bit of a different vibe (and no train horn haha). There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating here. The main struggle might be finding a place to park (think about carpooling if you're planning ahead)! Staff are always friendly and it's a great place to hangout! From what I could tell, it is a dog friendly patio as well.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
I really like coming here for the atmosphere. It's a nice little kickback place to have a good drink and some good food. However, my most recent experience was not great. We were there with a middle school basketball team and on the big screen TV, they were showing It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Body parts are blocked out, but there were some extremely graphic scenes. They wouldn't show the basketball game on that TV, but they showed what was essentially equivalent to soft porn. I am no prude whatsoever, but I even thought this was inappropriate to be showing. I get that This place is an adult establishment, but if you're gonna allow children there, you should be more mindful of what is showing on the TV. Even if we didn't have the kids in there, I wouldn't have wanted that to be on the TV.

Yelp
Disappointed in myself it's been until now I've stopped here. Awesome location/patio. Super friendly/welcoming staff. Refreshing AZ brews, & perfect light bites. TVs to catch your fave game too! A must stop when in Tucson.

Yelp
This place is one of our go to spots to just chill. They have board games, many different areas to sit, and they always have the best music playing. My go to items to get are the miche and their tacos - I've had the potato tacos and the shrimp tacos. Both have been amazing! The staff are very helpful and friendly! They even brought us paper and pens to take score while we played scrabble!

Yelp
Went to try their lunch special 1/2 off tacos, Boy that was definitely a mistake. Went in looked over the menu n got 2carne asada tacos n 1 birria taco My daughter got 2 carne asadas tacos n 2 Rancheros tacos. Presentation was bad The two carne asada tacos looked n tasted like yesterday meat , not fresh it was room temperature the cabbage garnished was 3/4 thick on top of the tacos n I removed it too bulky? The birria taco looked like it was the end of the pot meat . It's supposed to look like shredded beef on corn tortillas but it wasn't , it was a paste red stuff w hardly no meat but scraps of what should have been shredded beef. My daughter carne asada tacos were so full of fat fat n nerve she had to remove it from her mouth. It was discussing. The rancheros tacos had watery beans barley any meat w chunky pieces of chile n tomatoes? I just couldn't believe how bad the food was never again . A disgrace to Mexican food ! The ambiance is very cute place to hang out n have a beer. But not so much the food for me . In the end we thru away our food , we didn't even want to eat it! bland n terrible.

Yelp
They had a nice selection of beers with a mix of house and guest taps. We had a taco flight and a smash burger that were both very good. Nice outdoor seating area.

Yelp
This was delicious! Ordered the Taco Flight tacos with added chile tepin. Service was great and fast. Very nice atmosphere and highly recommend, will be coming back!

Yelp
Awesome spot . Location is cool obviously The beer is good The drinks are good but the food is impressive was not expecting that quality The shrimp taco and the salmon burger super solid. Added to the list when Central ish Tucson

Yelp
Sensational new collaborative spot with Tucson favorites. Our new go to! It's in a GREAT location, central near the University of Arizona, Flora's Market and Tumerico. Chef Maria from Boca and the Borderlands Brewery have created magic with the marriage of their beer-taco menu. They also have a variety of other Mexican food choices and a full bar. Our tacos were perfect and the side sauce, outstanding. We enjoyed both chicken and shredded beef, and they have a mushroom option. The space is hip, filled with murals and plenty of seating. They also have a water station, stylish new gender neutral bathrooms and a tv for sporting events. Their patio is a wonderful space big enough for events and special occasions. Plus, they have yard games! I highly recommend this newly opened local gem! I know we are planning to go back soon and become regulars.
google avatar

Helena W.

Yelp
What a great addition to the neighborhood! Great outdoor seating that is dog friendly and trendy indoor areas. Just tried an appetizer, which came out promptly and paired perfect with hubs IPA . The whole menu looked reasonable. Great non-alcoholic options with multiple agua frescas. Friendly staff! Looking forward spring outdoor beers here.
google avatar

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
The location is nostalgic, and I am a huge fan of Borderlands and Boca. I have been looking forward to this concept. We went on the first night open and had a ton of fun. All the Borderland beers are on tap. I had the spiked Tarmarindo with whiskey. It tasted just like an Aqua Fresca. Bit too sweet to have more than one, but there is liquor's behind the bar to have one on the rocks. I'm not sure yet if they make other cocktails. Unfortunately for us, we were full and didn't get food, but the menu looks fantastic. I will update next time. My husband and I played Yardzee on the grass and met new people. Can't wait till next time
google avatar

Tatum R.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this new Borderlands location! The inside seating included comfortable chairs and colorful murals, and they also had a smaller dog-friendly patio with turf. We ordered the chicken tacos, chips and salsa, margarita, and tamarindo, and it was all fresh and flavorful. They also had a variety of board games to choose from to bring back to your table. I would definitely want to come back again to try and get a seat on their patio the next time around!
google avatar

Yelp
Horchata Cream Ale and the flavors of Chef Maria Mazon in the same spot??? The new Borderlands brewing location in San Hughes is top notch! The outdoor area is open with lots of seating and games. The inside is filled with various rooms and spaces where people can eat and hang out. Order from the front and have a seat. Our food was delicious-- I got the Sonoran Taco flight and loved the sauce to dip it in! The salad on top was really yummy too. This spot is perfect to meet friends, family and good for kids too! Bottomline: Good food, drinks and vibe!
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
Great people, good and unusual beers. They have a good food menu as well. A bit out of the way location but it was easy to find on our first visit to the brewery.
google avatar

Jeniffer Z.

Yelp
I hardly leave reviews but I feel compelled to let you know that the food has really gone downhill. I used to love this place but the last two times the food has been awful and very expensive. Check out these $18 cheeseless nachos I had to send back. The shrimp tacos were ok, but both my son and I had horrible stomachaches the next day. Tucson has a lot of great places to eat, skip this one.
google avatar

Amelia G.

Yelp
Borderlands is a wonderful right off of downtown. Brewery tucked away for a perfect Tucson indoor or outdoor evening. The walls are covered with local art and rustic wood. Their beer selection is absolutely incredible and given nod to some local flavors such as Horchata, Prickle Pear Wheat or a summertime, watermelon, sour. They have seasonal rotations and have even recently incorporated a slushy version of some of their drinks. Even though they specialize in their brews, they also have wine and various spirit collection. (I've had a $2 tequila shot during an event). The service is always friendly and knowledgeable about their products They are known for hosting really cool events, such as art classes, organization, gatherings, and music. They also have a taco truck that is built right next-door that works in collaboration with the brewery itself. Who doesn't love beer and tacos?

Scott H.

Yelp
Excellent craft beer and a really kool brewery go visit. Nice staff and women owned.
google avatar

J.P. W.

Yelp
Decided to stop here when passing by. It was absolutely not what I expected and that's alright because I had an awesome experience here. Super friendly folks behind the counter. Borderlands' beer selection is always awesome (big fan of their vanilla porter). Good selection on the food menu, we kept it simple with chips and salsa and the two salsas provided were excellent. I really enjoyed the vibe of the space, with the individual rooms and comfy chairs. I really look forward to going back here.

Yelp
Cool spot to have some beer in Tucson. Their michelada was great, and they have some fun beers to try.

Kristen T.

Yelp
Food and beer was ok but service left A LOT to be desired. Staff was unenthusiastic and acted as if we were imposing upon her time despite being the ONLY customers.
google avatar

Zachary P.

Yelp
Came here for a beer and some snacks and was pleased with our visit. We sat in a pretty open outdoor area, which had some live music playing at a reasonable level and was very comfortable. Everything was order at the bar, both beer and food, and pickup the food at a window when the buzzer went off. My wife and I split some tacos which we enjoyed. We also split a flight, my favorite beer was the Toole Ave with Peach and Mango. This was an enjoyable experience and a place we would definitely be willing to return.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
First of all, this place is tiny. I was not allowed to go inside and check it out because I had a dog, that was a bit disappointing. I grabbed my $6 beer, which was way too expensive in my opinion, and headed outside. The three long tables were all occupied so I was forced to use one of the high tops and the stools which was incredibly uncomfortable. The high top chairs do not have a back, they have a very small seat, and they're hard metal. The tables themselves are just barrels, no where to put your feet and sit comfortably at them. I'm curious how to keep the artificial grass clean, my dog definitely acted like it smelled of many many other dogs. In the summertime that it's going to smell very gross. Hopefully they have a good hose down system. The other aspect I didn't like it the bottleneck aspect of where the counter is and needing to turn around to exit the same way which you immediately run into some tables and generally people standing around.

Tyler O.

Yelp
The parking situation can be a little rough but they have a nice selection of beers (I recommend the beer flight) and they have some tasty food as well which is a little on the pricy side.
google avatar

Kim L.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic! Very cute space with something for everyone! There's patio dining with misters and picnic tables, a cute little living room area inside, another room with a TV for those wanting to watch sports, and a back meeting room with a beautiful desert scene mural! Great local beers on tap, and the food is just a delight to the eye and tastes as good as it looks! I had the special which was a chicken and bean tostada, and it came with a beautiful veggie spread on top, lettuce, peppers, carrot, onion - I already know that I love chef Maria, but this was still unexpected somehow, just a great experience! They also have brunch now, can't wait to try it!
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Great beer and cool atmosphere, with some tasty snacks--we tried the chilaquiles with mushrooms, one with mole sauce and one with verde. It could have used more mushrooms, but the tortillas were crispy and the sauces flavorful. Service was great too!
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
Customer beware. I was there lady night, opened a tab. Had FOUR beers and was charged $100. The beer is great. The vibe is great. I just dont like having trust issues with the bar. Yea i called and asked to see my receipt. They had charged me almost 60 dollars in food and drinks I did not consume. All im saying is, if you're opening up a tab, be cautious. Last time I do that there. For the record, I did get my money back and the staff was apologetic but the damage had been done.

Yelp
This place is awesome. They have the best beer in tucson. Horchata cream ale is my number 1. Staff treats you like family here. They're social media is on point always posting funny commercials. I love coming here! Also they have great food!

Sameer S.

Yelp
Great beer and food. Shrimp taco and house fries are really good. Service is great. Folks are very friendly. Good seating area with tv that has sports on and good music.

Yelp
Love it here!! Such a great place to catch up with friends over drinks. Bartender with the curly hair and earrings was so personable and fun. She really went above and beyond. Great costumer service from everyone.
