SF’s Borderlands Cafe at Sci-Fi Bookstore Closing on Valencia Street | Eater SF

"Closing tomorrow, Tuesday April 30, the popular coffee shop and gathering spot attached to long-running science fiction and fantasy-focused bookstore Borderlands Books will shut after cafe sales slumped; owner Alan Beatts accepted a buyout from his landlord (his lease ran through 2025) and chose to get out ahead of a necessary seismic retrofit that would likely have closed the cafe for months. While the closure is sad news for Valencia Street coffee drinkers seeking a tranquil spot to read their new genre fiction purchase, Beatts will continue to run the book-selling component of his business." - Caleb Pershan

This was our first visit. The shop is located in the lobby of the Paul Schupe Art Center. The barista working that day did not speak to us until she had to. It made things kind of awkward. However, the Banana Bread latte was one of the best drinks I’ve had from anywhere. It was like drinking banana bread. It was worth the drive over, and I’ll be heading back to get another one soon.

I love Borderlands Coffee! Their coffee selections are so fun (forever will dream about the cloud matcha latte, as well as the Dubai chocolate latte I had a while back) and the baristas are really kind and helpful. Definitely would recommend for a pick me up!

Holy cow, get the Banana Bread Latte and top it with Salted Maple Coldfoam. ICONIC. It's sweet, but not too sweet and all the flavors come through without being overwhelming. The espresso is a great quality that is both robust and balanced. I highly recommend stopping at this bright, welcoming, local shop. ♥️

Just what I needed. Almost missed it as it’s tucked inside the Waterville opera house but the atmosphere is lovely and open and the drinks hit the spot. So glad to have happened upon this gem.

I'm an espresso aficionado. This place came across my radar as I was traveling back down east so I gave it a try. Great location. I generally know immediately when an espresso is going to be good. The fellow working the desk was well versed in cafe lingo and was able to pull a great shot with a light bodied, medium roast. A good shot in Maine is hard to come by, but this place checks all the boxes. Highly recommend.

Best lattes in Waterville! Beautiful latte art and wonderful service! The barista remembered our orders even though we only come about once a month.
