Villa Pignano

"A veritable Garden of Eden just 15km from Volterra, this 300ha estate is home to a restaurant with a strong zero-mile philosophy. This is backed up by its careful use of ingredients grown or produced on the estate itself, such as vegetables, olives and grains, as well as chicken, pork and honey – a sustainable approach that results in delicious, contemporary cuisine. The dishes here are fresh and full of flavour yet elaborate and modern in style (note the simpler menu at lunchtime). The interesting wine list explores Tuscany through its choice of top-quality organic labels as well as including wines produced from the estate’s own vines." - Michelin Inspector

Three nights just wasn't long enough!! This property is so amazing. From the moment we drove onto the property until the moment we had to say goodbye, we were treated like royalty. Our room, a beautiful attic room named Torretta, was so lovely and peaceful. We enjoyed massages at the Spa after our long travel from the States to Rome and then via car to Volterra. We had two dinners in the Medieval Fireplace Restaurant and one in the green michelin star restaurant, Villa Pignano. The food and service were superb. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast each morning with cooked to order egg options. Just fabulous! This was my first time enjoying pistachio cream. What a treat on pancakes and croissants. We hiked around the property following the well blazed trail markers. One day was rainy and we enjoyed spending time in the fitness room as well as visiting the artisanal workshop where we purchased shampoos, lotions and soaps that are in each room and are made on property. Wine tasting with food & beverage manager Mario was a delightful experience. Mario also took us under his wing at dinner and paired wines with our menu choices. And Gigi took such good care of us throughout our visit. He is indeed a quintessential Italian gentleman. Highly recommend this property for a relaxing time of pampering in Tuscany!

There is no doubt the the grounds and location of the hotel are stunning. However, the service for a being a 5 star hotel was not great. The hotel and restaurant were aware of my dietary restrictions, yet still served me a complimentary starter of a tart, without letting us know that it contained meat and I haven’t eaten meat in years and I got sick. We told the head of food and beverage and he never even came back to our table. We then told the front desk and they didn’t seem concerned, offering us 50 percent off, which was not the point. This was not something that you would expect to happen at a Michelin star restaurant. Additionally, we asked the hotel staff at least 3 times throughout the trip to please charge our car because we had a road trip after we checked out. As we go to check out they told us they had just started charging the car and when we left the car only was 30 percent charged, leaving us to have to stop and wait at a gas station for over an hour on the way to our next destination. Lastly, there are so many children here. When we did our wine tasting, there was a baby there at the wine tasting, crying. If you’re traveling with your kids, this place would work well for you. But if you’re looking for a place more for adults, I wouldn’t spend the money to stay here. I think this is a fine place to stay, but there are other places that are probably less expensive and care more about their guests.

We adored our stay at Borgo Pignano this past September. It was the 5th stop on our Italian vacation and it was perfection. We wished we had stayed at least an additional day as 3 nights was not enough! The property is impressive to say the least - its infinity pool is breathtaking, the views from great lawn and restaurant are unbeatable. and the service was 10/10. Everyone was kind, attentive, and helpful with anything we needed. I will always remember this property and hope to make it back soon!

We stay here Oct. 2024 for our Honeymoon and stayed in the attic suite -- the Toretta -- and it was fantastic. From the moment you arrive -- which the drive in is breathtaking -- the staff truly treats you like family and ensures everything you need or want is taken care of. From recommendations, to bags, to food and drink, they are there to help you. ||The grounds are fantastic and highly recommend a tour of the grounds to see all the villas, animals, and other items (pools, basketball courts) this place has to offer. ||The food at both restaurants we ate at were fantastic and some of the best food we have eaten. Each meal we had excellent staff that was always happy to see us -- Allen and Axel in particular -- and treated us so well. ||The infinity pool is from a dream and could have easily stayed at the pool all day. We ended the trip with a wine tasting from Mario who was so knowledgeable and friendly we highly recommended signing up. ||The place is also in close proximity to other towns and wineries to try (which we did and loved).||Last but certainly not least -- was the man himself: Gigi. From the moment we entered the lobby, he introduced himself to us and made us feel like we knew him for years. He was the one who took us on the tour and knows everything about the grounds and has so many stories to share. He is so kind and funny, and we already miss him! When we checked out (which also the staff was sad we brought our own bags down to quote "it's your holiday, it's our job" -- was basically their motto) we didn't see him. On our drive out, we saw him and he literally pulled his car over, got out, and said goodbye by name and hugged us like old friends. ||If you go, tell Gigi hi for us. We will be back. |Chad and Jackie

It is impossible to articulate how much we enjoyed our stay at Borgo Pignano. It surpassed every expectation in all aspects, the staff were warm and welcoming, the food was perfection, the estate is STUNNING and our villa was one of the most beautiful buildings we have had the privilege of staying in. ||||On arrival, we were greeted so warmly by Gigi who became a firm friend during our stay. He gave us a comprehensive tour of the estate, had so many good tips on how to enjoy our time and was a consistent friendly face. Even before we arrived, Jozefina was amazing in sorting our activities and transfers and when we got to meet her she was so lovely. A huge thank you to her, our trip was booked so last minute so she was amazing in getting everything sorted for us.||||The activities were excellent. The cooking class with Allesandro was so much fun and we loved eating our creations. The truffle hunting was also excellent, Luca was amazing at explaining the process and we felt so honoured to be able to work with him and his dogs. ||||The estate has signposts everywhere so you can really enjoy all of the 250 acres around colour coded trails, beware the hills! The open air bar is amazing, the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The breakfast, perfect. So much of the produce is farmed on the estate down to the hens eggs.||||Our villa was breathtaking, stunningly decorated with a huge pool. For those in the main hotel, there is also the choice of two stunning pools. The products which are all produced on the estate are sensational - the whole villa is scented by home made room fragrances and every touch is so thoughtful down to using non-toxic cleaning products. I loved that you could order "shopping" so we had home baked bread, estate prosciutto and home made cookies delivered. The estate wine, you should not miss it! ||||I could write a novel on how much I loved this property and this experience but I will just end by saying - book it and go. You won't regret it.

A superb retreat. Everything about this place is impressive.|It's all homegrown, the views are breathtaking and the hotel is beautifully put together.||Firstly the food, breakfast was top quality, probably the best breakfast options and quality I've had, the sausages, the omelettes, the pancakes with pistachio cream and honey and the pastries - all delicious. Lunch was really really good, I had a burger and my wife had a chicken cacciatore. Dinner was also high quality. I can't fault the food. I would have liked to have tried the other restaurant that’s open during the summer.||The views across to Volterra, and in between are simply staggering, I could sit there all day with a glass of red and take in the landscape (which is what I did on the first night).||The room we stayed in was La Legnaia. A small room that is quite tight with suitcases etc. Despite that, a lovely room.|We made use of the spa, the sports area, the walking trails, La Collezione Italiana and the wine tasting (hosted by Mario who was great and very generous). Gigi also took us on a tour of the estate in his buggy which was great fun and demonstrated how impressive the grounds were.||A wonderful stay at Borgo Pignano and l'd love to return in the height of the summer.

Another lovely visit. We stayed here back in 2022 and in that review noted that our two nights weren't enough and we needed more time to enjoy the place. Well we came back for four nights to a treat! We were given the Stallina room which is a beautiful little bungalow with the best kitchenette which we used to cook 2 out of our 4 dinners. I just love the smeg appliances and as someone who loves their own cooking getting local ingredients from close by towns and having a lovely meal in with the hubs was also a 5 star treat when you have all the cookware and dinnerware you could need. The bed is super comfy and the ACs a must in the hot Tuscan August sun. The hotel grounds have so much to offer in terms of activities, including many little hikes for those who live a walk. This time we also did a pasta making course with Chef Alessandro which was just fantastic (and we enjoyed the pasta for lunch later as cooked by the chef). The gardens are a wonderful dreamy spot for an apperitivo before dinner - with some of the most breathtaking views of Tuscany. The breakfast at this hotel is probably one of the best anywhere - plentiful and delicious. We did eat dinner at the Al Fresco restaurant the first night which was very good. We ate at the fine dining restaurant (Villa Pignano) the last night of our stay which I have reviewed separately. While our overall experience was lovely (and with particular thanks to the manager Gigi for being so attentive and always checking in) we did share some feedback through the hotel survey which we hope will make this an even more amazing stay in the future.

You won’t go wrong selecting Borgo Pignano for your perfect Tuscan countryside experience. The property is stunning, all 80 acres of it. The staff is very attentive, welcoming and friendly. The 4 days we spent here were the most relaxing of our 3 weeks in Italy. The adult pool was splendid - very hard to get out of because it was so inviting. Our couples massage at the spa was amazing. If you want to be pampered, enjoy beauty and serenity, this is the place for you.

Yelp
Such a lovely hotel. The accommodations are stunning. We stayed at a villa for part of our stay and the main hotel as well. Each accommodation was incredible. Well appointed , very pretty and extremely comfortable. The staff is outstanding! So warm and welcoming. The views gorgeous. We enjoyed a cooking class , long hikes , and truffle hunting. It's a wonderful hotel and we hope to return.

Yelp
words alone cannot express the wow factor we experienced when we pulled into the courtyard for the first time. Borgo Pignano is a magical place that provided the Tuscany trip of a lifetime. There are lots of activities if you want to stay on the property or you can visit any one of the ancient cities near by. I recommend you rent a car or have a car hired to take you. It is difficult but not impossible to get a car after you arrive. Borgo Pignano is just remote enough to make it difficult. Last of all I have to say the staff are absolutely wonderful. Nicest most friendly people you could ever want to meet.

Yelp
The grounds were absolutely beautiful. Every spot a place to take a picture with incredible views and beautiful landscape. A much needed relaxing spot after Florence. We wished that we had stayed another night to allow us to explore the area more and enjoy the pool. The service was top notch!

Yelp
Volterra, Italy Tuscany region Found out about this property from a family member who had recently visited. This was a splurge night on our trip. Organic farming, bee keeping, herb gardens, chickens, etc. After hearing about the property, curiosity got the best of me. After driving up the long road, the alluring smell of lavender, fresh herbs, etc. draws you into the reception area of the property which dates back to the 12th century. To fully enjoy a visit, plan ahead to book spa appointments, herb garden tours etc. We booked last minute and did not plan accordingly and missed out on some of the properties high points and that coveted massage. Upon check in we were given a small tour of the property, but I do wish I had thought to ask about herb garden and farm tours at that time. A recommendation: It would be helpful to have staff share times of events like garden tours, etc upon check in so that guests may plan accordingly if they are interested. When we asked staff we received a lot of uncertain answers as to when these things were taking place. The room we booked was assigned for a larger wedding party, so they upgraded us to the attic suite which had stunning views and was very quiet and had a relaxing and charming space complete with fresh flowers on the bathroom counter, bedside tables and living room area, and a bowl of berries, bottle of wine and handwritten card was left to welcome us. The buildings and grounds are maintained impeccably, the pool area just outstanding. We enjoyed dinner at the outdoor restaurant since the main restaurant was closed. We ordered salad, wood fired pizza (which was great) but the lamb chops were thin and cooked past well done. Our stay was relaxing and our plan was to arrive early afternoon and stay put and just enjoy the property. One night is not enough here if you can manage to foot the bill and want complete peace and tranquility, this is a very unique place.

Yelp
Borgo Pignano, tucked away in the Tuscan hills, is the perfect getaway. Tranquil and lovely, this property has luxury hotel and villa accommodations and a variety of activities that showcase the natural reserve. We especially enjoyed our stay in one of the villas with a private pool. Every day, fresh towels were waiting at the poolside, as well as daily housekeeping, including night turndown service. Being there in September, we could enjoy fabulous cuisine (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) outdoors in their restaurant overlooking the countryside. The sunsets were spectacular! The central hotel houses a library, pool table, and a lounge and additional amenities and activities such as horseback riding, wine tasting, a spa, and more. The atmosphere is quite peaceful and relaxing. We would have liked the ability to hire a driver to bring us to some of the neighboring towns, but that proved difficult, so we rented a car through them to tour a bit. However, having arrived at Borgo by taxi, they were able to book a driver to bring us back to Firenze. We also want to thank the property manager, Gigi, for his charming personality and attention to our needs. Salve Gigi!

Yelp
From the minute you drive up, you know you've made the right decision to stay here. From the food and wine (most from the actual property) to the pool and activities (wine tasting, herb garden tour, hiking, spa) all on the property, we never wanted to leave. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
You know that fantasy you have, where you go to Italy, drive up through the hills dotted with castles and charming wineries and arrive at a Villa overlooking Tuscany? Where you swim in a pool overlooking Volterra while charming italians bring you drinks and snacks and you take naps in the sun while experiencing something close to PERFECT CALM? Borgo Pignano is the Tuscan hideaway of my dreams. Friendly and incredibly professional staff, impeccably clean and beautifully appointed rooms, and perfect meal after perfect meal. Also. THE POOL. If you're looking for a beautiful place to get away from it all in a warm, friendly, inviting, authentic and incredibly scenic place- Borgo Pignano is the perfect Tuscan hideaway.
